New edition is even better .......2007-10-05
It is no surprise that the Fifth Edition of this unique medical reference is better than ever. For those who are new to this authoritative tome, you will immediately notice how well it is organized to help those in an emergency effectively find the answers they need. The chapters cover Mountain Medicine, Cold and Heat, Burns, Fire and Radiation, Rescue and Survival, Injuries and Medical Intervention, Animals Insects and Zoonoses, Plants, Food and Water, Marine Medicine, Travel and Environmental Hazards, Equipment, Special Populations (issue related to children and the elderly) and the Wilderness.
Every subject is carefully explained so the medical injuries surrounding the subject can be identified and understood in context and with greater detail. For example, to understand how to rescue someone from an avalanche, the reader must understand how avalanches are formed. The book also goes into detail on rescue equipment and their correct use as well as proper self and organized rescues before discussing medical treatments for avalanche victims.
The bulk of the book consists of chapters regarding various injuries and conditions encompassing symptomology, description diagnostic techniques (tests and such) that can be employed, treatment options, and the range of expected prognoses--in a nutshell, what is the likely injury, how do we treat it, and what's the outlook in terms of cure and survival.
A wealth of reliable, understandable information is readily accessible primarily targeting the medical professional but also for the lay person accompanied by very helpful illustrations.
The update is most welcome, as the area of wilderness medicine has grown significantly beyond rescue of mountain climbers to the practice of medicine in situations of constrained resource, during times of catastrophe like 9/11 or Katrina and often in appalling conditions. This new edition also identifies new and better treatments of everything from high-altitude pulmonary and cerebral edema to heart stroke.
The PDR for wilderness injuries & related illnesses.......1997-07-25
Foregoing knowledge of the existance of this text was unkown, until it was needed in an emergent situation on site. At that time a stingray injury required our immediate attention. With no previous experience in this kind of injury, the book provided immediate no frills information on treatment, backup care and procedures. After this experience, I carefully examined the text at length and was amazed at the comprehensive nature of the topic that was covered. I would recommend this text to be present in all health care provider libraries and offices, as it is in mine.

Poor reference.......2006-02-18
You'd think a book on any kind of First Aid (animals included) would be set up to be able to find things quickly, right? Well, I was amazed to find that the table of contents of this book actually has no page numbers. And, stunningly, there is no index at all. So how exactly are you supposed to find the information you need in an emergency?
pretty good book.......2000-06-26
This book gives an ok amount of information. After you read most of it, though, it is not too useful
Book Description
Wildlife care and rehabilitation is often on a one-to-one basis and involves a lot of time, care and skill. However, for many years, care of injured wildlife was regarded as a low priority and euthanasia was the recommended option. A lot has changed over the past twenty years and now caring for wildlife casualties is part of everyday life in many veterinary practices.Following on from the major success of the first edition, this second edition provides even more useful information on wildlife care and rehabilitation. As well as covering a whole range of species, with sections on birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, this edition now includes information on many 'alien ' species appearing in the British countryside such as wallabies, wild boar and exotic reptiles. In this edition:Essential guidance on handling, first aid, feeding and releasing, and many other disciplines not featured in veterinary or nursing training;Full of helpful tips from an expert in wildlife rehabilitation who has unparalleled practical experience;Expanded chapters on the care of all species - particularly casualty badgers, otters and hedgehogs - and more comprehensive guidance on rearing orphaned mammals and birds;Lots more colour pictures to aid in management and care techniques and the latest information on zoonotic diseases from around the world.
Customer Reviews:
Useful.......2007-06-15
Although it was written in England and thus has british wildlife, it deals with many species (deer, squirrels, birds, etc.) which we also have. It has excellent illustrations and photos, and alternatives to the information uniformly presented in domestic publications (dealing with fractures, etc.)
Packs in details essential to any working with wildlife.......2006-11-07
The second edition of a classic on wildlife rehabilitation packs in details essential to any working with wildlife; particularly since much has changed in wildlife care in the years since the first edition appeared. Here are the latest first aid tips, handling instructions, and expanded chapters on species-specific care, from badgers to hedgehogs. Here are the color photos to illustrate care techniques, and here also is inclusion of many 'alien' species. While specific to Britain, PRACTICAL WILDLIFE CARE will reach around the world with its instructions, not to be found in most competing veterinary guides.

Excellent!.......2003-10-30
This a great book for anyone in the veterinary field who may encounter wildlife. Perfect for day or emergency practices that do not treat or see wildlife on a regular basis. It is very clearly written and covers a vast array of animals. Although it is not written with North American wildlife in mind, it is still very helpful in giving clear instructions on how to care & treat for wildlife.
Practical Wildlife Care by Les Stocker.......2003-06-24
This has been a very helpful book, more in-depth than many others, however, some things are specific to Britain and not the USA. I would highly recommend this book if you are thinking of or already working with wildlife and rehabilitation of wildlife.
At Last!.......2000-10-01
At last a practical wildlife care book that is made for the surgery. All to often these types of books become dust collectors as there isn't sufficiant detail for the vet & vet nurses. I have found this an invaluable practical book. The detail is terrific and easy to view. No time is spent flicking through the book looking for information juggled about. The advice and index are an invaluable source to keep at hand. When time is short & may be the difference between life or death this book gets to the point. At collage we learn about cats, dogs & domestic pets and farm animals. This book should be available to all during training. All too often we have no problem finding information on the companian animals but our wildlife, which belongs to us all, sadly takes a back seat and we are left in the ands of a special bunch of people who have learned by flying by the seat of their pants. Thank you Les for another brilliant addition to my book shelf at work. A great read, and so useful too.

Death is part of life.......2004-12-14
It's true, there's a euthanasia section. It constitutes two pages of a 225-page book. Anyone not comfortable with the methods listed is free to have a veterinarian euthanize the animal instead, if need be. (Of course, putting the poor dying creature in a car and driving it to a loud, high-traffic building that reeks of people, dogs and cats may be more stressful for it, but if you can't bring yourself to break an animal's neck quickly and humanely, you probably care less about its feelings than yours.)
One thing I admire about this book is the authors' willingness to admit when they have little or no experience with a species. I trust them. When they do have experience, they share it: instructions on the safe capture, care, feeding, administration of first aid, and release of animals from waterfowl to deer to foxes are well-covered. The "Wildlife and the Law" and "Wildlife Rehabiliatation Centers" sections are proabably way out of date by now (my edition is dated 1983), but this is an excellent primer.
Great Book!.......2002-09-10
This book is FILLED with useful advice on how to care for wild creatures. It takes a no nonsense approach to capturing, handling, feeding and caring for orphaned or injured wild animals. Perhaps the previous reviewer couldn't handle the candor with which the authors deal with the reality that some animals in some circumstances can't be helped, but if you can and are interested in effectively helping animals that are in trouble, this book's for you.
This is first aid?.......2000-07-15
I had thought this book was about first aid for wild animals, but as it turns out it's more like a manual for killing them. It's full of ways to kill but next nothing on healing wild creatures. This is the most disappointing book I've ever seen. I'd recommend that anyone interested in truly helping animals avoid this book...

Good Overall Guide.......2004-11-16
This is a good overall guide for taking care of an opossum. I purchased this book/guide for my uncle who found an "abandoned" opossum at his back door. For its size, the book is extremely thorough in explaining: where do opossums come from (why are there so many "abandoned" opossums around), how to care for an opossum (health signs to watch out for), how to feed, how to set up a proper environment, etc.

This fifth edition has been thoroughly updated and revised and includes up-to-the-minute reviews of the city''s best restaurants, bars and clubs. The detailed contexts chapter includes a section on Catalan cookery with recipes.
Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2007-07-27
This is an excellent guide.. although I must admit I did not expect anything less from Rough guides. It is full of helpful details which make you go around the city on your own with no fear of getting lost, from the airport till your own destination. It includes sightseeing and absolutely everything about the city.. I always buy rough guides, although there is more text than photos, because the information given inside are excellent.
A good guide to Barcelona.......2005-05-07
I just got back from a two week trip to Barcelona and I found
the Rough Guide very useful.
I read a number of books on Barcelona before I went, including
Robert Hughes' "Barcelona: the great enchantress" and Tobin's
"Homage to Barcelona" (the title is a play on Orwell's "Homage
to Catalonya"). I also had the TimeOut Guides, both to
Barcelona and the TimeOut Guide to Barcelona Food and Drink.
What I particularly appreciated about the Rough Guide was its
accuracy and its completeness. For example, it includes
accurate information about the metro stops to various places
of interest. Each district in Barcelona has a brief guide to
points of interest. The Rough Guide even provides accurate
directions to Calonia Guell, where Gaudi's chapel, referred to
as "The Crypt", is located. Since getting around and knowing
when points of interest are open is a big part of visiting
Barcelona, the Rough Guide was invaluable and I carried it
everywhere.
Along with the Rough Guide to Barcelona there is the
Rough Guide Map for Barcelona which I also highly recommend.
This map survided two weeks of constant use in very good
shape.
TAKE THIS ONE WITH YOU!.......2001-04-22
Like most other Rough Guides, I found this very reliable. It is not too heavy to carry round ,even on a night looking for good Tapa Bars! The recommendations in eating out proved invaluable and accurate. They are much easier to follow than the LP guide as the different city areas are conveniently headed up.This enables you to wander around an area and stop off at your leisure sampling tapas. A very agreeable night out. Our favourite bar was El Xampanayet (A Cava Bar). The accomodation recommendation we chose proved good and prices were also as quoted. Time spent browsing the net for accomodation was far less productive than a quick read. The colour maps are an improvementon earlier additions, but you are better with a tourist centre map, not because that in the book is inadequate, but it is easy to have a map which slips into your pocket. The tourist info in the guide is good, the style is easy to read and all the city is covered, including days out from barcelona if you feel so inclined. The section on getting around is useful and includes weekly transport tickets etc. Overall excellent value. If you like pictures your better with Eyewitness, but its much heavier to carry, and in Barcelona you'll be doing lots of walking!
Get the Lonely Planet book instead.......2001-02-13
The maps in this book are completely inadequate. Barcelona is a big complicated city and needs more than Powerpoint-style graphics that pass for maps. Reading a flimsy Spanish map from the tourist office was better. Pictures... virtually non-existent. Construction of book absolutely pales in comparison to a Lonely Planet book. Poor layout. I do not work for Lonely Planet!

Book Description
This book looks into the lives of eight brave women whose lives exemplify the often overlooked contributions that women from many cultures have made to American history. The 18th century's Sacajawea was translator on the Lewis & Clark expedition. The 19th century's Mother Joseph (Esther Pariseau) was one of the best known of the women who traveled West as missionaries. Also included are the life histories of Juana Briones de Miranda, Biddy Mason, Mary Bong, May Arkwright Huttton, Kate Chapman, and Sarah Winnemucca. This book presents great stories and archival photographs. Curriculum Guide Available.
