The Science Times Book of Mammals (Science Times)
Manufacturer: The Lyons Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1558218920 |
Amazon.com
Culled from the pages of the New York Times--from its excellent Science Times section, to be precise--this collection of nearly 50 short articles written by various Times journalists reports on some of the more intriguing members of our planet's most dominant class of animals. Former Science Times reporter and editor Nicholas Wade edits the book, envisioning it as a sort of who's-who of "mammals that have brought themselves to biologists' attention or made the headlines."Each article builds on the insights of those preceding it. The book is organized in ascending order of brain power, from lowly monotremes ("If a Platypus Had a Dream, What Would It Mean?") all the way up through lions ("Please Say It Isn't So, Simba: The Noble Lion Can Be a Coward") and sea otters ("Picky Eaters in Monterey Bay Who Dabble in Petty Theft") and, finally, us humans. A short series explores how we compare with our less sophisticated fellows ("Why Babies Are Born Facing Backwards, Helpless and Chubby," "What Makes a Parent Put Up with It All?"). All the articles include their original illustrations, and each chapter of successively more complex mammals (from rodents to cats to canines to whales) gets an introduction by Wade setting the context. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Mammals, warm-blooded, big-brained, and lactating, are the most highly organized animal group on the planet and, despite their relatively small numbers, the dominant one. Split off from reptiles over 200 million ears ago, they now range over the earth in myriad forms from rodents to whales to primates. Humans are but one subspecies of mammals, but we have much in common with even the most distant of our cousins, and examining their biology and sociology reveals much about ourselves. This volume collects fascinating articles about mammals by award-winning Times journalists, carefully organized so that each builds upon the principles gleaned in the preceding article. The result provides fundamental truths about the way our world and its mammalian inhabitants work. In order of ascending brain power, the book reveals the bizarre behaviors of the rarest of creatures and little-known facts about common animals, from naked mole rats that colonize like bees and the two-foot-tall Himalyan flying squirrel, thought to be extinct, to the randy peace-keeping practices of bonobo chimpanzees of Zaire and the brutal and cunning courtship of dolphins, who depend on an exceedingly complicated social structure to get the job done. Among the startling discoveries of odd animals are bats who lactate and a giant, man-size sloth that may still exist in the Amazon rainforest. Focused chapters include: surprisingly cowardly lions, hyenas, and other cat relatives; returning wolves - and the landmark journalism on their reintroduction to Yellowstone Park - as well as their cousins foxes and African wild dogs; seafaring mammals such as the placid manatees and disappearing right whales; primates; and finally, a look at ourselves and how we relate to others in our mammalian class regarding parenting, play, aggression, emotionality, sociability, and more. With the wonderful illustrations that originally accompanied the articles, and introductions to each chapter by Nicholas Wade, who guides readers through the maze of mammals with erudition and insight, this book will fascinate naturalists, biologists, and animal lovers of every stripe. GREAT FOR TRIP PLANNING WITH OR WITHOUT CHILDREN.......2004-06-11
Of particular value to parents is the fact that attractions are rated by their interest level for adults and, seperately, for children.
The way the book is laid out, it is convenient to use to plan a trip either around visiting major attractions s your starting point, or around finding attractions in a specific area that you might be visiting for other reasons.
There is a very handy section of Travel Tips for families with children that is from PARENT MAGAZINE.
There is also an extremely useful special feature index. Again, it is useful to both adults traveling sans children and those with children. For example you can find a listing of Hotels or Attractions that provide educational opportunities, or parties for kids, or babysitting service, or which have cradles and cribs, or for the adults, Spa Treatments and/or Golf. What makes these categories so useful is that they are categorized by the type of service offered with the hotels or attractions that provide the services listed alphabetically within each category. Then, for more information, you can go to the appropriate geographical location for fill-in information, including pricing.
In my opinion, Zagat's "U.S. Family Travel Guide" just might be the one indispensible guide for family trip planning.

Finding the best in America.......2003-12-17
The writing in the Zagat guide is a bit bland and can be uninspiring. Take the Inn of the Anasazi (NM), they write, "This first rate adobe inn with a great location is a magical experiences, mixing Southern Charm with high-end-class." Where as the "Mobil Travel Guide: America's Best Hotel and Restaurants" paints a picture for you when you read about a property: "The Anasazi Inn is mesmerizing, with timber ceilings, creamy sandstone walls , cactus in terr-cotta pots and New Mexican art.".
The indexes are a very helpful (All-Inclusive Price, B&B, Beach Settings, Destinations Spas etc.) but the one index that is missing is "Bargains". You will find the average per night fare costing $200 - $400 per night. It should be stated that Zagat started as a patrician's guide to restaurants. But not here, for you will be disappointed to find that this guide had no reviews of the restaurants that are found in the hotel and resorts
However, I have used the guide various times to search out the "Top" places to stay in the U.S. and I am always pleased with the recommendations. So, if you travel a lot, and have the money to get the best you will be well served by this guide.

Japanese Today: Change and Continuity, Enlarged Edition
Edwin O. Reischauer , and Marius B. Jansen Manufacturer: Belknap Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674471849 |
Book Description
With the two-thousand-year history of the Japanese experience as his foundation, Edwin O. Reischauer brings us an incomparable description of Japan today in all its complexity and uniqueness, both material and spiritual. His description and analysis present us with the paradox that is present-day Japan: thoroughly international, depending for its livelihood almost entirely on foreign trade, its products coveted everywhere--yet not entirely liked or trusted, still feared for its past military adventurism and for its current economic aggressiveness.
Reischauer begins with the rich heritage of the island nation, identifying incidents and trends that have significantly affected Japan's modern development. Much of the geographic and historical material on Japan's earlier years is drawn from his renowned study The Japanese, but the present book deepens and broadens that earlier interpretation: our knowledge of Japan has increased enormously in the intervening decade and our attitudes have become more ambivalent, while Japan too has changed, often not so subtly.
Moving to contemporary Japanese society, Reischauer explores both the constants in Japanese life and the aspects that are rapidly changing. In the section on government and politics he gives pithy descriptions of the formal workings of the various organs of government and the decision-making process, as well as the most contentious issues in Japanese life-pollution, nuclear power, organized labor-and the elusive matter of political style.
In what will become classic statements on business management and organization, Reischauer sketches the early background of trade and commerce in Japan, contrasts the struggling prewar economy with today's assertive manufacturing, and brilliantly characterizes the remarkable postwar economic miracle of Japanese heavy industry, consumer product development, and money management. In a final section, "Japan and the World' he attempts to explain to skeptical Westerners that country's growing and painful dilemma between neutrality and alignment, between trade imbalance and "fair" practices, and the ever-vexing issue of that embodiment of Japanese specialness, a unique and difficult language that affects personal and national behavior.

Family Religion in Babylonia, Syria and Israel: Continuity and Change in the Forms of Religious Life (Studies in the History and Culture of the Ancient Near East, Vol 7)
K. Van Der Toorn Manufacturer: Brill Academic Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9004104100 |
Book Description
This volume deals with the religious practices of the family in the ancient Babylonian, Syrian, and Israelite civilizations. On the basis of a wealth of documents from both the private and the literary realm, the book gives an exhaustive description and analysis of the rites of the ancestor cult and the devotion to local gods. The author demonstrates the role of these two aspects of family religion in the identity construction of its followers. The section dealing with Israel pays particular attention to the relationship between family religion and state religion. The emergence of the state religion under King Saul marked the beginning of a competition between civil and private religion. Though the two had great influence upon each other, the tension between them was never resolved. A study of their interaction proves to be a key for the understanding of the development of Israelite religion during the monarchic period. The book is of particular importance to biblical scholars, Assyriologists, and all those interested in the history of ancient Near Eastern religion.

Turkey: Challenges of Continuity and Change (Contemporary Middle East)
Benli Altunisik Manufacturer: RoutledgeCurzon ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415287103 |
Book Description
Turkey is generally perceived as deeply divided between the secular, Westernized elite and the Muslim population, with the latter involved in a constant struggle to resist the modernization process imposed by the elite. This book argues that Turkey's history is much more complex than this stereotype allows, where neither the elite nor the public are monoliths existing in total opposition to each other.
The authors put issues relevant to Turkey today - such as consolidating democracy, dealing with economic development issues, improving its human rights record and its foreign policy - in an historical context, allowing comparisons with other late developers in the world and reflecting the complexity of Turkish political and socio-economic developments. Turkey also argues that the modernization process that started in the nineteenth century, with all its elements including secularization and Westernization, has taken root.
This book provides a concise and accessible introduction to contemporary Turkey from a social science perspective. It will be essential reading for students and researchers of political science, social science and the Middle East, as well as for those with a general interest in Turkey.

Contemporary Puerto Rican Installation Art: The Guagua Aerea, the Trojan Horse, and the Termite

Pushing Puerto Rican Art History Forward.......2002-03-30
Roulet's crisp focus deepens the level of analysis of the art and artists well beyond the usual bland fare. She also brings to bear theories and artists hitherto not discussed in connection with Puerto Rican Art. Among the many benefits of reading the book is that the reader comes out with a more layered understanding of well known artists like Martorel and welcomed interpretative keys to the works of the lesser know artists. One can only hope that it raises the bar for Puerto Rican art critics, most of whom do not know much about installation art.
Roulet carefully mounts her evidence that debunks the unidimensional nationalist school of thought--where art is in the service of reaffirming identity. The book, however, is not polemical but rather a cogent examination of the multiplicity of viewpoints and media that make the nationatilist construct inadequate for these artists. Thus, while others may share Roulet's view that it is time to recognize the limits of the nationalist fraework, her book is the first to provide a concrete example of one of the ways it can be done. Also noteworthy as an example for others is her treatment of highly charged political issues without taking sides or swipes.
Garcia Marquez has said that in the Caribbean everyone knows what has happened before it happens. Yet, this excellent book took Puerto Rico art circles by surprise. A pleasant and refreshing surprise for some of us who do not care to admit that that the island has evolved in ways that we may not so easily understand.
