Customer Reviews:
Time for Kids - Bats .......2006-06-30
I purchased this book for my first grade classroom. We do a unit of study on the elements of a non-fiction text. The Time for Kids books are wonderful for this unit. They have terrific pictures (which the kids love), and many elements of a non-fiction text, such as labeling, comparisions, captions, glossary, types of print, etc. I would highly recommend this book - really all of the time for kids books - to those looking for appropriate non-fiction books for a first grade classroom. The level 1 and 2 books are most appropriate.

Culled from the pages of the New York Times--from its excellent Science Times section, to be precise--this collection of nearly 50 short articles written by various Times journalists reports on some of the more intriguing members of our planet's most dominant class of animals. Former Science Times reporter and editor Nicholas Wade edits the book, envisioning it as a sort of who's-who of "mammals that have brought themselves to biologists' attention or made the headlines."
Each article builds on the insights of those preceding it. The book is organized in ascending order of brain power, from lowly monotremes ("If a Platypus Had a Dream, What Would It Mean?") all the way up through lions ("Please Say It Isn't So, Simba: The Noble Lion Can Be a Coward") and sea otters ("Picky Eaters in Monterey Bay Who Dabble in Petty Theft") and, finally, us humans. A short series explores how we compare with our less sophisticated fellows ("Why Babies Are Born Facing Backwards, Helpless and Chubby," "What Makes a Parent Put Up with It All?"). All the articles include their original illustrations, and each chapter of successively more complex mammals (from rodents to cats to canines to whales) gets an introduction by Wade setting the context. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Mammals, warm-blooded, big-brained, and lactating, are the most highly organized animal group on the planet and, despite their relatively small numbers, the dominant one. Split off from reptiles over 200 million ears ago, they now range over the earth in myriad forms from rodents to whales to primates. Humans are but one subspecies of mammals, but we have much in common with even the most distant of our cousins, and examining their biology and sociology reveals much about ourselves. This volume collects fascinating articles about mammals by award-winning Times journalists, carefully organized so that each builds upon the principles gleaned in the preceding article. The result provides fundamental truths about the way our world and its mammalian inhabitants work. In order of ascending brain power, the book reveals the bizarre behaviors of the rarest of creatures and little-known facts about common animals, from naked mole rats that colonize like bees and the two-foot-tall Himalyan flying squirrel, thought to be extinct, to the randy peace-keeping practices of bonobo chimpanzees of Zaire and the brutal and cunning courtship of dolphins, who depend on an exceedingly complicated social structure to get the job done. Among the startling discoveries of odd animals are bats who lactate and a giant, man-size sloth that may still exist in the Amazon rainforest. Focused chapters include: surprisingly cowardly lions, hyenas, and other cat relatives; returning wolves - and the landmark journalism on their reintroduction to Yellowstone Park - as well as their cousins foxes and African wild dogs; seafaring mammals such as the placid manatees and disappearing right whales; primates; and finally, a look at ourselves and how we relate to others in our mammalian class regarding parenting, play, aggression, emotionality, sociability, and more. With the wonderful illustrations that originally accompanied the articles, and introductions to each chapter by Nicholas Wade, who guides readers through the maze of mammals with erudition and insight, this book will fascinate naturalists, biologists, and animal lovers of every stripe. Customer Reviews:
Not exactly what I thought it was........2007-01-10
I thought that this would describe various destinations in detail. Instead, it simply lists attractions, restaurants, hotels, etc. and rates them. The descriptions are quotes from people who have visited. I didn't think it was helpful.
Filled with Info...........2006-08-24
I read lots of travel guides and this one is jam packed with info. It's tough to find good guidebooks that deal with family travel...usually it's the same tired info, and boring to read...not so with Zagats. Can't wait to put this guide into action.
GREAT FOR TRIP PLANNING WITH OR WITHOUT CHILDREN.......2004-06-11
For this survey book, Zagat teamed up with PARENT MAGAZINE to come up with a guide that is particularly helpful for parents traveling with children. It is broken down geographically, and within each geographic area, it is further broken down into "Attractions," "Hotels," and "Restaurant Chains."
Of particular value to parents is the fact that attractions are rated by their interest level for adults and, seperately, for children.
The way the book is laid out, it is convenient to use to plan a trip either around visiting major attractions s your starting point, or around finding attractions in a specific area that you might be visiting for other reasons.
There is a very handy section of Travel Tips for families with children that is from PARENT MAGAZINE.
There is also an extremely useful special feature index. Again, it is useful to both adults traveling sans children and those with children. For example you can find a listing of Hotels or Attractions that provide educational opportunities, or parties for kids, or babysitting service, or which have cradles and cribs, or for the adults, Spa Treatments and/or Golf. What makes these categories so useful is that they are categorized by the type of service offered with the hotels or attractions that provide the services listed alphabetically within each category. Then, for more information, you can go to the appropriate geographical location for fill-in information, including pricing.
In my opinion, Zagat's "U.S. Family Travel Guide" just might be the one indispensible guide for family trip planning.

Highly recommended.......2005-07-24
I like the mix of hard and soft data, and used the cross-reference indices to locate potential honeymoon spots. Both my fiance'e and I found it easy to navigate, and would recommend it.
MORE THAN 1000 FIRST RATE PLACES TO STAY.......2004-12-05
This survey is the result of surveying 16,413 frequent travelers. The respondents have stayed at hotels an average of 36 nights per year. This adds up to roughly 600,000 nights annually. These survey participants rated these hotels, resorts and spas on the quality of their rooms, services, dining facilities, and on their public spaces/facilities. In addition the resources of the American Society of Travel Agents and their 900 members were used. Overall then, the ratings represent a pretty broad range of experiences that should be a good indication of what to expect at each location.
In addition to rating the various properties by their location, this survey breaks them down by top scorers in a number of categories such as Top Hotel Chains, Top 50 hotels, Top 50 resorts, Top 50 small hotels, Tops by region and Top service and Dining to name just a few.
After the main portion of the survey, there is a sspecial features index, listing such items as Bed and Breakfast properties, Convention Centers, right down to Private Balconies, Water Views, and "Trendy Places." The list is too long to include here, but might just have the information you need to make one place more appealing to you and your family than another one you might be considering.
There are other useful sections, such as some very handy travel tips including methods of getting your reservations at better prices than those published.
Overall, for the upscale traveler, I think that this Zagat Survey is one that ought to be consulted while planning a trip.

Customer Reviews:
Finding the best in America.......2003-12-17
This is a good guide to have if you want to be pampered. It will consistently send you toward the best accommodations and resorts (spas too) that America has to offer. The reviews are not done by professional, independent evaluators, but rather by a consensus of the common populace (8,000) who have gone to experience and rate the hotels, resorts and spa..
The writing in the Zagat guide is a bit bland and can be uninspiring. Take the Inn of the Anasazi (NM), they write, "This first rate adobe inn with a great location is a magical experiences, mixing Southern Charm with high-end-class." Where as the "Mobil Travel Guide: America's Best Hotel and Restaurants" paints a picture for you when you read about a property: "The Anasazi Inn is mesmerizing, with timber ceilings, creamy sandstone walls , cactus in terr-cotta pots and New Mexican art.".
The indexes are a very helpful (All-Inclusive Price, B&B, Beach Settings, Destinations Spas etc.) but the one index that is missing is "Bargains". You will find the average per night fare costing $200 - $400 per night. It should be stated that Zagat started as a patrician's guide to restaurants. But not here, for you will be disappointed to find that this guide had no reviews of the restaurants that are found in the hotel and resorts
However, I have used the guide various times to search out the "Top" places to stay in the U.S. and I am always pleased with the recommendations. So, if you travel a lot, and have the money to get the best you will be well served by this guide.

Pretty good for a gringo!.......2003-07-02
Douglas W. Richmond is well versed in Mexican as well as Latin American history, despite being a gringo, he is a "righteous gringo!" After reading his splendid book, mailed it to a student in Argentina so it can be enjoyed down there too! Unfortunately such books are not common in Central and South America, only in Cuba and formerly in liberated Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega, could you find such well informed literature which exposes U.S. and foreign corporations who suck the life blood out of Latin Americans, as Richmond points out. He shows that on September 11, 1973, the C.I.A. under then U.S. President Richard M. Nixon and Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissigner had democratically elected Chilean Marxist president Salvador Allende murdered, maybe September 11, 2001 has a connection? Douglas pointed it out, yet the Bush regime remains silent along with the IMF, CIA, and FBI, why is that? Those pilots were d4edicated Marxists, ever wonder why that was not mentioned in the stories? Maybe like the late Malcom X stated: "The Chickens Come Home to Roost," said after John F. Kennedy "bought the farm," read his book, you cannot go wrong!

Book Description
With the two-thousand-year history of the Japanese experience as his foundation, Edwin O. Reischauer brings us an incomparable description of Japan today in all its complexity and uniqueness, both material and spiritual. His description and analysis present us with the paradox that is present-day Japan: thoroughly international, depending for its livelihood almost entirely on foreign trade, its products coveted everywhere--yet not entirely liked or trusted, still feared for its past military adventurism and for its current economic aggressiveness.
Reischauer begins with the rich heritage of the island nation, identifying incidents and trends that have significantly affected Japan's modern development. Much of the geographic and historical material on Japan's earlier years is drawn from his renowned study The Japanese, but the present book deepens and broadens that earlier interpretation: our knowledge of Japan has increased enormously in the intervening decade and our attitudes have become more ambivalent, while Japan too has changed, often not so subtly.
Moving to contemporary Japanese society, Reischauer explores both the constants in Japanese life and the aspects that are rapidly changing. In the section on government and politics he gives pithy descriptions of the formal workings of the various organs of government and the decision-making process, as well as the most contentious issues in Japanese life-pollution, nuclear power, organized labor-and the elusive matter of political style.
In what will become classic statements on business management and organization, Reischauer sketches the early background of trade and commerce in Japan, contrasts the struggling prewar economy with today's assertive manufacturing, and brilliantly characterizes the remarkable postwar economic miracle of Japanese heavy industry, consumer product development, and money management. In a final section, "Japan and the World' he attempts to explain to skeptical Westerners that country's growing and painful dilemma between neutrality and alignment, between trade imbalance and "fair" practices, and the ever-vexing issue of that embodiment of Japanese specialness, a unique and difficult language that affects personal and national behavior.
Customer Reviews:
yet another apologist for Japan.......2005-05-26
This is one of the most superficial and ridiculous books on Japan that I came across. Though a Harvard scholar, Reischauer has such a flimsy grasp of modern Japan that it is simply and utterly appalling. It is like he wants the Japanese to love him and so writes only about the nicest things that he can find, while ignoring anything untoward - or even baselessly asserting that all problems like the Yakuza (!) will simply disappear as the country "matures". Well, if you've lived there and seen that there is much ugliness beneath the veneer of democracy and politness, this book will disgust you to no end.
Not recommended. It is a pathetic performance and deeply disappointing.
Very superficial.......2001-05-05
Having lived for more than six years in Japan, and being fluent in Japanese, I have a quite clear idea of the society there. This book is not only too old, but it shows that Reischauer (like the other members of the Chrysantemum Club) has a one-sided point of view, and is still ganging with the American "reformists" that put Japan back on the rails (so to say...) during the occupation. Of course Reishauer knows quite a lot about Japan, but he tells only what he thinks is important to him and to his old-fashion Orientalist group. Read any Murakami or Yoshimoto to understand on your own how this book is very superficial. There are much better and objective introductions to the complex Japanese reality.
This book is an excellent way to learn all about Japan........1998-05-01
This book discusses all aspects of Japanese society very well. It is a great mix of the present and history and of the average person and the people in power.
The best single source on Japan and the Japanese........1998-03-04
I highly recommend this book to students, business people, and anyone who needs information on Japan and the Japanese. I have yet to find any single volume work on the subject of contemporary Japan as comprehensive as "The Japanese Today." I found the volume well organized and easy to read.
Great Introduction to Japan.......1996-12-06
This book is one of the best general introductions to Japan that exists.
It is meant for the layman and because of that, stays away from
a scholarly bent. For anyone who has an interest in Japan, while this
should not be the only book you read, it should definitely be
the first.

Book Description
This volume deals with the religious practices of the family in the ancient Babylonian, Syrian, and Israelite civilizations. On the basis of a wealth of documents from both the private and the literary realm, the book gives an exhaustive description and analysis of the rites of the ancestor cult and the devotion to local gods. The author demonstrates the role of these two aspects of family religion in the identity construction of its followers. The section dealing with Israel pays particular attention to the relationship between family religion and state religion. The emergence of the state religion under King Saul marked the beginning of a competition between civil and private religion. Though the two had great influence upon each other, the tension between them was never resolved. A study of their interaction proves to be a key for the understanding of the development of Israelite religion during the monarchic period. The book is of particular importance to biblical scholars, Assyriologists, and all those interested in the history of ancient Near Eastern religion.

Dull as dishwater, but a great book nonetheless.......2005-10-28
This book is not an easy read and people without at least some background in Middle Eastern or Islamic studies are likely to get lost. That being said, there are some strong reasons to recommend this book. First, Voll takes the idea of Dar al-Islam, the Islamic World, seriously and treats a whole variety of societies, ranging from Sub-Saharan Africa, to the Middle East, to South East Asia, in a single narrative and utilizing a persuasive framework of analysis. Secondly, while Voll gives ample treatment to state actions, he also demonstrates that a whole range of non-state actors were equally or even more important in developing Islamic reactions to modernity. Finally, Voll's treatment of the eighteenth century is simply seminal within the literature of the Middle East... a very basic and important revision to the scholarship that every student of Islamic societies needs to address.
In short, not a book for pleasure, but one that every serious student of the field needs to read.
Best Comprehensive Book on Islam and the Modern World.......2000-09-19
This book delivers what it promises in the subtitle. The book's strength is that it is comprehensive, covering the wide range of manifestation of Islam in the modern world from the 18th century onwards-even with a short introductory chapter to get you up to pace from Islam's advent. However, though it is a must read for scholars in the field, this Georgetown prof's writing style can make what I find to be one the most exciting historical movements in human history very dry and dull; therefore, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. He has no flare or excitement, especially when compared with such excellent writers as Karen Armstrong. Nonetheless, if you study or are seriously interested in understanding modern Islam, this is a must buy. If not, buy the Battle for God by Karen Armstrong and get 3 religions for the price of 1.

Great Textbook!.......2006-03-09
This book is great for learning about everything important in history. The only bad thing is they don't go into much detail about some very important people like Julius Caesar, Charlemagne or Genghis Khan. They have more information on Diocletian than Julius Caesar. But if you're a teacher, this is a great book to teach a class with because it has a vocabulary at the end of every section. You can tell them what isn't in the book about important people. I definetly reccomend it!
Text book or study manual.......2005-09-10
Accidentaly bought the study manual instead of the book. Don't let sellers rip you off. Read the small print!

Book Description
Turkey is generally perceived as deeply divided between the secular, Westernized elite and the Muslim population, with the latter involved in a constant struggle to resist the modernization process imposed by the elite. This book argues that Turkey's history is much more complex than this stereotype allows, where neither the elite nor the public are monoliths existing in total opposition to each other.
The authors put issues relevant to Turkey today - such as consolidating democracy, dealing with economic development issues, improving its human rights record and its foreign policy - in an historical context, allowing comparisons with other late developers in the world and reflecting the complexity of Turkish political and socio-economic developments. Turkey also argues that the modernization process that started in the nineteenth century, with all its elements including secularization and Westernization, has taken root.
This book provides a concise and accessible introduction to contemporary Turkey from a social science perspective. It will be essential reading for students and researchers of political science, social science and the Middle East, as well as for those with a general interest in Turkey.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully insightful.......2002-06-02
This study of Puerto Rican installation art is surely a definitive work which no future student or critic of the field could afford to ignore. But more strikingly it is also a wonderfully insightful guide for the layman, short on jargon and richly informative. Each artist presented here comes to life for the reader in a way that makes us all the more interested in the art. The art itself is described and explicated in lively, vivid and elegant prose. And Ms. Roulet offers a thorough overview and sensitive analysis of the unique Puerto Rican-American relationship that provides the context necessary to understand this fascinating body of work.
Pushing Puerto Rican Art History Forward.......2002-03-30
Laura Roulet takes Puerto Rico art history out of its time warp in more ways than one. Puerto Rican Art history books tend to be dull surveys, tributes or recycled manifestations of the "nationalistic" interpretation of Puerto Rican art. They are all broad brush. By choosing a few installation artists, Roulet is the first to write a book that explores this vibrant segment of Puerto Rico's art world.
Roulet's crisp focus deepens the level of analysis of the art and artists well beyond the usual bland fare. She also brings to bear theories and artists hitherto not discussed in connection with Puerto Rican Art. Among the many benefits of reading the book is that the reader comes out with a more layered understanding of well known artists like Martorel and welcomed interpretative keys to the works of the lesser know artists. One can only hope that it raises the bar for Puerto Rican art critics, most of whom do not know much about installation art.
Roulet carefully mounts her evidence that debunks the unidimensional nationalist school of thought--where art is in the service of reaffirming identity. The book, however, is not polemical but rather a cogent examination of the multiplicity of viewpoints and media that make the nationatilist construct inadequate for these artists. Thus, while others may share Roulet's view that it is time to recognize the limits of the nationalist fraework, her book is the first to provide a concrete example of one of the ways it can be done. Also noteworthy as an example for others is her treatment of highly charged political issues without taking sides or swipes.
Garcia Marquez has said that in the Caribbean everyone knows what has happened before it happens. Yet, this excellent book took Puerto Rico art circles by surprise. A pleasant and refreshing surprise for some of us who do not care to admit that that the island has evolved in ways that we may not so easily understand.
