          4 out of 5 stars Frommer's New Zealand.......2007-03-26

An excellent planning guide, especially the tips about school holidays and how to avoid the crowds.

5 out of 5 stars Good insights from a native.......2007-02-18

I thought this book had good coverage of the major locations most Americans would visit in New Zealand. More importantly, the author is a native of NZ and as such, she seemed to have some good insights into the local viewpoint. I had no difficulty finding the information I needed about every location we wanted to visit and every major hotel or restaurant that interested us. This book is probably not well suited to those who want to backpack through NZ on the cheap. It's aimed at the middle-class traveler who wants to stay in an actual hotel and eat in restaurants.

          2 out of 5 stars OK.......2006-12-19

This guide is OK if you're rich and want to only hit the big touristy areas. If you don't like sitting on a tour bus and don't mind sleeping at a hostel and want to see the little towns then avoid this one and get the Lonely Planet guide instead. I just got back from New Zealand and basically didn't use this book at all. Not a great investment. Couldn't find most of the small towns in this book at all.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not complete.......2006-11-07

I planned a trip to New Zealand in the fall of 2006 using this book and a few other New Zealand travel guides. In the past, I found Frommer's guides to be complete and packed with great recommendations for places to go, where to stay, etc. This book lacked in all of those respects.

The accomodation sections seemed to be a list of the most expensive accomodation for any given area, with no regard for the value of the stay for your money. That the author learned a lot about high-end hotels in researching this book isn't surprising since Frommer's allows their authors to accept complimentary accomodation. But as a reader I expect to get a lot more good recommendations for places in the 'moderate' and 'inexpensive' price ranges.

Aside from leaving out budget accomodation recommendations, some parts of the country aren't covered at all. At first this made planning my trip quite difficult, but fortunately other more complete guidebooks included extensive information about those areas.

If you're only going to get one book to plan your trip to New Zealand, don't get this one. If you're looking to augment your research this could be a great pick, particularly if you're interested in a comparison of well-appointed hotels. Don't expect a book comparable to the "Europe on $XX / day".

          1 out of 5 stars I Don't Need Hotel Recommndations at $1,000+ Per Night.......2006-06-30

I picked up the 2006 edition and since I always plan parts of my trips abroad by selecting nice accomodations in an area of interest, I turned to the pages at the beginning on "Best Boutique Hotels and Small Lodges," "Best B&Bs" and "Best Luxury Accomodations) on pp. 12-15. "Luxury" apparently is Bill Gates or Warren Buffet luxury to Frommer, with rates around US $1,500 per night and some up to $7,000. I had to check to find whether these might be weekly rates, but they are PER NIGHT. Many of the B&Bs were US $300-$500/night, and none under around $150. Most of the boutique hotles were US $500-$700/night.

We are fairly affluent travelers, but these prices were so discouraging we wondered whether we even ought to be considering a trip to New Zealand. We don't pay such prices in the USA. Fortunately, prices elsewhere are not nearly so high, I just wish Frommer's could define "best" in a way that is more like "best value"

5 out of 5 stars Concise information for all spending levels.......1997-07-23

Out of the 5 or 6 books I've reviewed on NZ travel, this is the one that will be actually carried and used on my month-long trip. The information is never vague; for example excursion trips are described, the top providers are listed with all necessary details. Maps are extensive and frequent. I particularly liked the fact that while there are many ideas for budget travel, also included are the special hotels or restaurants or offroad trips that can cost more but are considered worth it. This guide is for everyone, versus Lonely Planet, (the backpacking crowd) or Fodors ( high end spenders) or Inside Guides (good pictures and background, no practical information).

The trip was fantastic and I really enjoyed it, but this book didn't make it out of my bag when I was there. While a lot of the info was good, I used the Lonely Planet guide the whole time as it was more up to date and more accurate than Frommers.

I went to Melbourne and Sydney and the book turned out to be pretty skimpy. I flipped through the Fodor's book when I got home and wished I had bought that one instead. I found the Frommer's book to be very light on things to do and good places to eat for the 2 cities I visited. There isn't even a mention of Olympic Park in Sydney and only a handful of restuarants are mentioned. If you are only buying one book I would recommend checking out the Fodor's instead. It is much more thorough and has better maps throughout for each city.

We will be going to Australia this November, and bought this book now in October. Having read a good portion of it (facinated by the "virtual tour" before the real one), I can say this is probably the only book one will need before and during the trip. Complete, straight, fun to read. The other book by same authors (Australia for under $50) is basically the same book without listing the expensive resorts and restraunts. G'Day!

4 out of 5 stars Good for planning pre-trip, but not as helpful during.......2000-08-14

When we were considering what to do during our month in New Zealand, travel agents were pleading with us to have everything lined up before "the Y2k rush." So, being the literal engineering types, we bought a couple of books -- the Lonely Planet NZ and the Frommers for Under $50/day -- and started poring through them.

Our initial impression of the Lonely Planet book was too dense to be useful to us. The Frommer's guide, however, had suggested itineraries based on the time one could spend in New Zealand. Even better, the author, Elizabeth Hansen, was available to "consult" on the trip on an hourly basis. Because we'd be toting our 18-month old, we used her services and pre-booked the entire trip.

Once there, we found the Lonely Planet book much more useful. The Lonely Planet guide excels at providing abundant information about towns, including attractions, restaurants and maps giving a rough layout.

For example, one of the folks at a Visitor center clued us into Farewell Spit, an area we were going to forego because it was well off our chosen route. As it turned out, Tahuna Park, our campground in Nelson was pretty bad (right under an airport takeoff path; lots of people permanently living there; undermaintained kitchens), and we didn't relish the idea of spending three days there as originally planned.

The side trip to Farewell Spit was long and we'd have to find some place relatively nearby to the Spit to make it a reasonable trip. Unfortunately, this is where the Frommer's guide was very weak. It caters more to the B&B crowd, and there isn't that much north (or west) of Nelson. The Lonely Planet book, however, paid for itself by suggesting a lot of options, providing maps of the little towns, and listing restaurants where we might stop at for "snack time."

In summary: The Frommer's book is helpful for initially planning your trip.

The Frommer's book has more of a focus on higher-end accomodations, e.g., motels or beds and breakfasts, and covers a smaller area. This is not such a big deal unless you want to venture too far off the beaten path.

We felt the author's services were worthwhile.

Don't underestimate the value of the Visitor Centers scattered throughout New Zealand. They were generally very good at providing local information. Most will also book special activities for you.

5 out of 5 stars Only guide book I took with me........2000-03-24

I recently spent two weeks in New Zealand. This was the only book I took with me and it was the best choice. I had looked through others but, I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning a holiday there. The pricing was a bit outdated due to the exchange rate, but all the other information was dead on! I did the things recommended in Rotorua, Taupo and Napier and I was well prepared! The for free or nearly free things to do and see were the best. I cant wait to go back!

                      Book Description

This 3 rd edition of The African-American Odyssey includes not only a CD-ROM-bound into every book (which incorporates over 150 documents in African American history), but also has a broadened international perspective, expanded coverage of interaction among African Americans and other ethnic groups, and new material on African Americans in the western portion of the United States. Free access to Research Navigator is included. This allows readers to access this powerful research tool with one site. Written by leading scholars, The African-American Odyssey is a clear and comprehensive narrative of African-American history, from its African roots through the Civil War through modern times. This book places African-American history in the context and at the center of American History. Balancing accounts of the actions of African-American leaders with investigations of the lives of the ordinary men and women in black communities, exciting and readable coverage includes: African-American history from its African origins to the sixteenth century and the beginning of the forced migration of millions of Africans to the Americas. Succeeding chapters present the struggle of black people to maintain their humanity during the slave trade and as slaves in North America during the long colonial period. It continues through the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction, and continues through the Civil Rights movement to discussions of black life at the dawn of the 21 st century. This is a compelling story of survival, struggle, and triumph over adversity. Readers will learn an appreciation of the central place of black people and black culture in this country, and a better understanding of both African-American and American history.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Primer.......2007-08-28

"The African American Odyssey" just got better with the release of the 3rd edition. Updated accounts, in-depth coverage, a broadened focus (the American West, and beyond America), and the wonderfully helpful enclosed CD which allows for additional research, all make this a comprehensive volume for any and all students of African American history.

The blending of the famous and the unknown, men and women, North and South, slave and free, provides for a tapestry that weaves together both the terror and the triumph of the African American experience which enabled them to move beyond the suffering to a place of healing hope. The faith-basis for so much of the African American triumph could have been covered more comprehensively, though it is more than hinted at in the original sources covered.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction.

This 330-page tome contains seven essays and more than 300 illustrations. The catalog of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, it is not a history of 20th-century architecture, per se. But there is enough information, both visual and verbal, to ground any thoroughgoing reader in the architectural theory of the century. All the classics are covered: the Chrysler building; Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater; Bauhaus buildings; world's fair pavilions, including Moshe Safdie's Habitat '67; Saarinen's sweeping rooflines; Sutemi Horiguchi's measured modernism; the Sydney Opera House; Pompidou Center in Paris; and hundreds of other iconic images.

Some of the written material lacks the crisp, clean style of the architecture, but the book is brainy and provocative, and some of the essays are brilliant. French architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen, a specialist on the international impact of modernism and "Americanism," contributed a multifaceted chapter in which he analyses urban architecture, urban planning, political forces fomenting or forbidding change, new towns, the vertical city and its effects on individualism, and more.

The pictures are often small but always clear, many in color, including plans, paintings and drawings, maps, and movie stills. --Peggy Moorman
