Book Description

Edited by Thomas E. Finger, Wayne L. Silver, and Diego Restrepo

The ability to detect chemicals in one's surroundings is a vital function for organisms ranging from single cells to insects to humans. The explosion of information provided by molecular and cellular biology has contributed greatly to our understanding of how the chemical senses function in these organisms and is the impetus for the second edition of The Neurobiology of Taste and Smell. This updated edition contains all-new chapters by many new contributors, although this edition, like the first, is intended to provide an introduction to the field itself. The second edition incorporates the significant strides that have been made with the application of modern cell and molecular techniques. It includes the following subjects:

Covering a wide range of disciplines including neurobiology, molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and psychology, The Neurobiology of Taste and Smell, Second Edition provides a comprehensive description of the crucial issues and important developments within each area. Students and researchers in neuroscience and cell and molecular biology, in addition to new investigators to the field, will find the Second Edition an essential reference of updated information.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional and timely second edition.......2001-01-16

This exceptional and timely second edition provides a much-needed update. The volume focuses around how the chemical senses work, with coverage ranging from microorganisms to humans and from genetics to behavior. Research in these areas has grown rapidly in the past decade; more than anything, this work illustrates how far we have come in understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie taste and olfaction. With coverage that is both comprehensive and succinct, features its readers will value, this volume is a "must-have" for everyone doing research on or teaching about the chemical senses. (And almost like a hidden treasure, at the end of each chapter there is a superb bibliography.) --Vincent E. Dionne, Boston University

      Book Description

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Richard Altschuler & Associates, Inc./ Gordian Knot Books
On the Cutting Edge presents a series of true stories providing the first account of many of the major programs and projects that have made the last sixty years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky’s account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space.
Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the use of the atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s that are just now coming to fruition.

      5 out of 5 stars A Tale Well Told.......2007-07-22

Very interesting and entertaining set of career experiences as told by one of the greatest engineer's ever. Probably not for everyone, but anyone who has been a part of the Aerospace industry would enjoy the telling of Dr. Bob's career. Well writen, articulate and informative. I purchased four more copies for gifts to young engineers that might write something similar in 50 or so years.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities .......2007-05-08

Written by engineer, educator, and arms race/spacecraft design pioneer Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Ages is a collection of true tales of the author's professional experiences. Active in the atomic and space race from 1950 to 1988, and not really retired up to even the present day, Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars a notable pioneer.......2007-01-15

The book is a collection of anecdotes and snippets from Brodsky's long professional life, commencing during World War 2 and proceeding past the end of the Cold War. He gives an insider's look at what it was like to work in the American defense industry. Notably the aerospace milieu of southern California. But also in the nuclear weapons program at Sandia, New Mexico. Having worked briefly at Los Alamos, but decades after he was at Sandia, his accounts brought back fond memories of New Mexico.

He was also involved in some of the earlier postwar uses of computers. Like programming ENIAC for the first Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. A total dinosaur of a machine by current standards. But truly cutting edge at the time.

There is a brief mention of wind tunnel tests he did in Pasadena, Los Angeles. How times change. That wind tunnel building is now the south campus of the Arts Center College of Design. I was there recently for a reception. Few of the current students appreciate the history of that building, and its crucial contributions to the US war effort during World War 2, and later in the Cold War.

              Book Description

I NY documents the street art that appeared in New York City in recent years. It offers an exciting look at an art form that is not simply graffiti and that has begun to appear in museums worldwide. The work created with paints, stencils, coloured tiles, stickers, wood, scissors and wheat paste demonstrates a high-calibre design sensibility and is often integrated into its environment in subversive and surprising ways.

Featuring examples by new talent as well as established names including Faile, Swoon, Bast and Rot Gut, I NY is a permanent time capsule of the constantly changing images that are as much a part of New York City as hot dog carts and Central Park.

This book contains approximately 500 photos lovingly taken and compiled by author and street artist Kelly Burns that capture the pure, unabashed and authority-defying expression of this art form.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photography, The Definitive New York Street Art Book.......2005-12-04

I got the first pressing of this book (the one that Kelly Burns published himself a couple of years ago) before there were so many graffiti and street art books on the market. At the time, it was an awesome collection of works, but this new updated publication is an incredibly thorough and beautifully captured collection. It shows in Burns' work that he truly loves the art and is not just looking to jump on the latest trend. He leaves no wall unturned as he takes his readers off the beaten path to discover those preciously fleeting and inspiring works that may have existed for mere hours, as the is the nature of graff/street art. Artists like jet+rubble, Monster, Skewville, Momo, who lesser known, are given as much page-estate as the more prominent names represented--look for Neckface, Bast, Swoon, Kaws and London Police. Also new from the previous version, are some very cool artist portaits. Obviously, Burns has been able to connect with the people behind these works and gain their trust--a rarity in this underground artform. Burns is a gifted photographer who really captures the feeling of the street in his pictures. There is depth and energy I have not found in other graff/st.art imagery, which makes this book all the more exciting to look through. The only mystery to this book, which I consider a flaw, is that this updated edition has the same cover as the first edition, when in fact the contents are very different. If I had not been showing it to someone in a bookstore, I'd have never known. Regardless, I NY is awesome and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys, art, photography and the thrill of discovery.

4 out of 5 stars The best free art in New York is NOT in the museums!.......2004-01-28

There are two types of New York art culture: The "high" (consisting of museums, operas, galleries, etc) and the "lowbrow" one (consisting of street culture, graffiti and stickers, illegal bits and bobs of visual stimuli provided by renegade artists). Most people are familiar with the former. It is the true New Yorkers who appreciate and understand the latter. "I NY" is a huge photographic collection of just that, which is called "Street Art": It's free. And it's fantastic.

Street art is not simply graffiti. Most of it is of quality caliber, excellent graphic design sense, and subversive in nature. I've walked down the street only to find a cute atari-esque alien creature composed of colored tiles, mounted on the base of a stairwell---like a peekaboo toy. Or a realist, acrylic-painted hummingbird floating over a decaying brick wall, providing a glorious trompe l'oeil. I'll be trudging home, and see a spray-painted cartoon face spanning the lid of a trash can--this spontaneous find is so cheerful. One can even discover elaborate, huge, meticulous paper-and-exacto-knife cutouts mounted on walls by SWOON (my fave street artist) that inspire nothing but awe and can make even the most jaded Wall Streeter stop in his or her tracks.

Street art not only sweetens the gritty surroundings of New York but provides you with a delicious nugget of free art that comes from pure, unabashed, authority-defying self-expression. The best part is that it's totally unexpected--and because of that, you feel like you've found a hidden treasure that just happens to brighten your day.

This book gets 4 stars because it's about time that someone compile a coffee-table worthy book on street art that doesn't consist of boring graffiti mural after graffiti mural. Congrats to Kelly Burns and collaborators for bringing this book to reality. However, to me it's a sampler/primer, because i've seen better examples of street art that were somehow missed, and there simply is just too much good stuff that can be crammed into one book. I'd suggest visiting www.woostercollective.com for a comprehensive look. Beautiful Decay is another magazine celebrating street art. If you don't live in NYC, then this book is a perfect souvenir. I highly recommend getting this book because it's permanent, and it's valued for the wide range of photographs which would be impossible to curate on your own.

I find most of my street art below 14th street in Manhattan, although it's everywhere. You just have to LOOK.

                Book Description

New York is the world capital of street graphics—a creative kaleidoscope of urban ephemera in the form of signs, symbols, graffiti, murals, and advertising. Its innovative ideas, styles, and mediums quickly become international.

Street Graphics New York documents the emotionally charged street imagery of the city post-September 11th. New York landmarks are represented in chic fashion advertising and on iconic tourist souvenirs. Ethnic diversity is signified through a cultural smorgasbord of restaurant signs. Jazz Age vitality, brash Sixties Pop Art, hip graffiti, stencil and sticker art—throughout, Barry Dawson's skilled eye portrays the energy and humanity of New York through visual themes that surprise, intrigue, and amuse.

Here is a rich sourcebook for designers, a quirky visitors' guide, and a historical document of a time that changed New York, America, and the world. 150 color illustrations.

                Book Description

"Every culture has a way to remember their dead, and this fine book documents this so very well. When these young people are gunned down, who really cares, who knows, who sees? Now, all over urban America, walls, murals speak, yell, scream to us. Let's not forget them and, better yet, let's stop the senseless deaths."—Spike Lee

This classic collection of photographs documents the best of New York City's memorial murals, which were painted for the victims of tragic and untimely deaths. Commissioned by families and friends of the victims to commemorate the casualties of shootings, accidents, arguments, police killings, and drug-related turf wars, these vibrant murals have in most cases now been painted over or destroyed. R. I. P. contains superb color photographs of memorials from Harlem and the Lower East Side, the South Bronx and Brooklyn, together with the moving stories behind them. The photographs of these painted walls ensure that the dead are not forgotten, for a sometimes violent and indifferent city also spawned a rich urban art form. 137 color photographs.
