Book Description

We are an animal-loving population, with consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom spending top dollar on their pets. This trend indicates that pet owners want the best for their dogs and cats. Scientific research shows that home-cooked meals are better for your pets -- especially dogs and cats -- than store-brand food. Feeding pets all-natural homemade food and treats not only provides nutritional and health benefits, but allows pet owners to meet their pet's taste preferences and special needs, and gives them the opportunity to nurture their dog or cat as they would any other member of the family.

The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs is full of information on nutrition for your pet and dozens of stories and recipes from real animal lovers and pet owners that give an intimate, personal voice to the book.

1 out of 5 stars Dog Food.......2007-09-20

This book is not worth buying. You could do as well by just cooking anything yourself and giving it to your dog. This has no special recipes that are dog specific and evaluated for their nutritional content. (which is what I expected)

1 out of 5 stars The good food cook book for dogs.......2007-09-17

I would not buy this item if I had saw it first. Not what I was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars My frenchie gives it a big "paw up!".......2007-09-04

My frenchie puppy loves the Chicken n' Rice stew mixed with a little kibble. He's growing like crazy. I can't wait until his first birthday to make the doggie cake!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but needs further research and adjusting.......2007-07-17

This book is good, but by no means the perfect book of recipes. I have had it for probably 6 months now and did further research before using the recipes in the book. A lot of the "stew" recipes call for pasta (which we all know is a simple carb, not found in nature) and only a small amount of meat compared to the rest of the ingredients. What I've done is adjust the recipes I choose to use by upping the meat amount by 3-4 times and eliminating all pasta from the recipes. I include all the veggies/legumes/brown rice as suggested as these add essential vitamins/minerals/antioxidents. I also feed this as my dog's PRIMARY diet, without the kibble that the book suggests. For breakfast, my dog (16lb bichon frise) receives 1/2 c. of stew and for dinner he receives 1/2 c. of stew plus 1/2tsp a powdered dog vitamin supplement that I mix in. He loves it and is healthy by all accounts!

1 out of 5 stars Bad Recipe.......2007-07-13

I have a recipe that was printed in Woman's Day with Donna's recipe for Oatmeal Apple Cookies for dogs. It is horrible to make. Dryer than a bone(no pun intended) to roll out; the dough would not stick together. They also did not take but 18 minutes to bake and not her 30-35 minutes.
I followed the directions and know how to bake so I don't know what was so wrong. I have tried to find her through search and there is nowhere to contact her.
The recipe needed more oil and more water to make the dough pliable. Really, to be able to just roll out. At least my dog like them but I will never make then again!

5 out of 5 stars The best Prairie Home shows of every year - you just have to laugh.......2007-05-13

I got a cassette tape of the first PHC joke show years ago and just about wore it out from playing it to keep me alert and upbeat on road trips. Now I found this compilation on 4 CDs and I'm laughing more than ever. Sure, there are sophomoric jokes, 3rd grade jokes, puns, groaners and old chestnuts you've heard before, but somehow they all work when presented by Garrison, Roy Blount, Paula Poundstone and the rest. I love it!

4 out of 5 stars A Funny Diversion.......2007-02-13

On your next road trip, give good thought to this panoply of wit and sometimes droll but mostly rapid fire humour and you'll be laughingly delighted at how quickly that drive will pass.

5 out of 5 stars Guy walks into a bar..........2006-02-05

Amazing, non-stop nuggets of gold. Playing the audience like a well-oiled violin, the Prairie Home team delivers 3 CDs worth of material plus a bonus disc of the 2003 & 2004 joke shows. Need some conversation starters? Look no further than this set.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-30

This book, along with Ms. Heidenreich's other book, The Parrot Problem Solver, are the best books I've come across dealing with companion parrots. If you understood why your bird is behaving as it does, you can deal with it more effectively. Kindness and reward go far with a companion bird (and, even though Ms. Heidenreich didn't mention it, 11-12 hours of covered cage/darkness a day does, too) than all the reprimanding in the world (which a parrot does not understand). A parrot, much like a cat, is not going to do anything he doesn't want to do, but unlike a cat, you can convince a parrot to want what you want, too. Tell him he's a good bird when he's quiet. Give him a reward when he says something nice. Understand you are his teacher, not his mate and not his slave. Punish him by turning your back, reward him by giving attention and praise. Parrots are a lot like toddlers - they need to be constantly taught how to be good and their companions need to be able to recognize the behaviors (sometimes extremely hard to see) that signal overexcitement, frustration and anger. Excellent book I'd recommend to any bird "owner."

2 out of 5 stars content unoriginal.......2006-11-02

Although the arrival/condition of the book was perfect, the content was very limited. I learned nothing new and feel I wasted my money. My parrot is still obnoxious. I had so hoped I would learn techniques to change his behavior.

3 out of 5 stars For the beginner..........2006-08-18

To preface, I'm a bit biased as I am seemingly more in-tune with my birds than most folks are with theirs. Most birds seem to like me, and the behavior solutions in this book are mostly second nature to me. A good book for the flustered who need reassurance to follow the right path.

3 out of 5 stars Good bird.......2006-03-22

This is a good book for advanced bird owners. Its not really clear enough alot of the time to understand from a beginners perspective. I would highly recommend this book to someone who already has some knowledge of companion birds.

5 out of 5 stars Solving behavioral problems in Parrots.......2006-03-09

A must read for all parrot owners. The advice in this book works. Barbara Heidenreich is one of the very best behavioral consultants in the world. Get this book so you can have the best relationship possible with your companion parrot.Even if you think the relationship is good now, it will become better after you read the book.

Book Description

All the pretty good jokes from "A Prairie Home Companion" Joke Shows 7 and 8, available separately for the first time. "Jokes are good for your health," Garrison Keillor says. "They reduce stress, even jokes as old as â€~Does this bus go to Duluth?’ â€~No, this bus goes beep beep.’ Or the blind man who picked up a hammer and saw. They keep on pleasing us, year after year." And year after year, "A Prairie Home Companion" annual Joke Shows keep on drawing huge audiences of radio listeners. They’re among the most popular shows in the program’s history—and they stay funny no matter how often you hear them. The puns and one-liners still make you groan. You still fall for the knock-knocks and the lightbulb jokes (how many does it take?). Somehow the bar jokes never grow old. And somehow the e-mail jokes already sound like classics. This CD was originally part of the Plenty of Pretty Good Jokes collection, released in 2004. Now available separately, it features every morsel of hilarity from Joke Shows 7 (2/1/03) and 8 (4/17/04). Garrison’s guests include Paula Poundstone. The jokes are audience-tested and certified Not Bad.

4 out of 5 stars Good companion to the CDs.......2007-07-20

I got this after I already had the Joke Show CDs. I was telling all the jokes I'd heard, but having trouble remembering many of them. This is a great way to get the jokesa in writing. There are a few new ones, but overall it's best after you've already heard the CDs (which are 5 star in my book :-)

4 out of 5 stars good one.......2007-04-02

Originally, i bought this at Mall of America and left it on our coffee table. During thanksgiving, all family members took turns finding a joke to share. It was so fun, i bought one for my Dad, who is going through chemo-therapy and it has lifted his spirits, when nothing else did.

5 out of 5 stars Good joke book.......2007-01-10

I bought this book for my dad who loves to tell jokes. Some of them or on the corny side but overall this is a great book for someone who loves to learn new jokes.

    Book Description

Attiat Ott and Richard Cebula have recognised the need to present, in an accessible and straightforward way, the voluminous literature in the public economics arena. Advances in econometric techniques and the spillover of knowledge from other disciplines made it difficult, not only for students but also for lecturers, to accurately find the information they need.

This major new Companion addresses a wealth of topics common to the study of both public economics and public choice including questions such as: How does one structure the whole spectrum of public finance in a manageable framework? What is Wagner's Law really about and what does empirical testing tell us? How binding is the budget constraint? How encompassing is a dictator's interest? How do veto powers of the executive, institutional structures and regimes affect public sector outcomes? Do voters behave rationally? Do conflicts yield benefits? Is war cost effective and does secession offer a viable exit option?

The contributions, both theoretical and empirical, shed light on some contentious issues in the public economics literature and provide readers with insight into issues that are at the forefront of discussions about the public economy. The empirical analysis utilizes recent econometric techniques to validate or refute empirical findings based on older `vintage' econometrics. The diversity of coverage ranges from traditional models of the public economy to the incorporation of defence spending as a significant and often neglected function of the public sector. The contributors include many pioneers and leading lights in the field.

The Elgar Companion to Public Economics will be required reading for academics and scholars at many levels in the fields of public economics and public choice but mainly graduate and above. The Companion will also be of value to scholars in the wider social sciences in general and political science in particular.

    Book Description

In this comforting and deeply thoughtful book, the author offers a series of simple grief rituals, among them the venting of feelings, letter writing, affirmations, exercises to act out negative emotions as well as forgiveness, fantasies, meditations, and more. Adult children of alcoholics, victims of incest and assault, and those who have ended a relationship, lived through a natural disaster, wrecked a car, or suffered any kind of loss will find that these rituals move them beyond loss to forgiveness, gratitude and a new sense of life.

3 out of 5 stars A bit too New age.......2006-08-19

This was not what I thought it was when I got it. It was a bit to new age, and the rituals a bit to mundane for me.

    5 out of 5 stars good grief.......2003-09-12

This book has proven to be a valuable resource for may grief specialists in the community. Previous reviews seemed to have missed the point that the book may serve as an outline for grief work or used in conjunction with therapy. The book is not a substitute for the "Real" life work that needs to be done. Consider that Elaine has thought about these issues long before "grief" held such cache in the psychological community. One reviewer mentioned New Age or Zen etc., Why not.. Freudian drive theory did not do us much good on the issue-- did it?

1 out of 5 stars Good Grief Rituals.......2002-10-29

I am a grief facilitator and have read over 50 books on grief. For some people a "ritual" helps them to let go of the pain. But I found the style of these rituals to be too "Zen." I really don't think that people in grief need to "get intouch with their inner child." Using insense in some of the rituals felt too mystical to me. I did like the ritual of digging a hole and putting in all the negetive feelings of pain, but most of the suggested rituals were too "new age" for my taste.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of ideas, but needs more clarity.......1999-08-22

I've found this book to offer more rituals than other books I've read on the topic of grief, but the explanations seem cursory at times, and I'm finding myself asking "huh?" a lot. Frankly, Good Grief Rituals feels rather amateurish. However, I applaud the author for including many ideas, but perhaps she might have gone deeper with less.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Ms. Childs-Gowell!!!.......1999-05-10

My accupunturist lent me her first edition copy of this book to help with the grief of my best friend committing suicide, three years ago. 18 months after the first suicide - another friend committed suicide. Boy, this book was an amazing tool and offered support to me when no one else could. I always have three copies in my home to lend to others and I have also purchased about 35 more for anyone who needs the help during their life time.

I had to drive 45 minutes just to get a glance at this wonderful book. Ms. Carr has done a beautiful job of reviewing what meager evidence there is on companion plants and their effectiveness. There are some helpful drawings and an "encyclopedia" section for quick reference. Truly well done, and, unfortunately, currently unavailable everywhere I've looked!
