After reading the negatives reviews for this book, I went to B&N to judge for myself. Conclusion, stay away. That is all that I have to say....I can't really add upon the negative comments herein, yet that they are indeed valid.

    That's all.

Lonely Planet's guides are getting worse to worst, especially for Asia. I wish they would stop employing solely former English teachers as writers, since alot of them dont know the local language very well or at all. Hello LP, ever thought of asking a Korean American/Australian/Canadian to write for your Korea guide? There are people in the world who are truly bilingual, binational. . . . and would be able to 'guide' better than a foreigner guiding other foreigners.
I bought the Seoul book because unfortunately there weren't many options out there for English speakers, but actually the Tourist offices in Seoul has better information and it's free.
The maps in the book are confusing; when you are on the streets looking for places there are street names but on the map there are not. It would help to if LP would include the places' names in Korean 'Han Gue' since LP's phonetic are not 100% anyway, and if you want to ask a Korean for help then it's better to have it written in Korean. The language section could use a couple more phrases like like 'not to spicy please.' The Seoul book is out of date, lots of places went out of bussiness. I also bought LP's Korea book and it has more up-to date info. Since all the writers in both guides are males, information for women travellers is pitiful. The layout is confusing and not easy to find, I had buy post-it tabs for different sections otherwise it would take more time find it again. THis is not a concised guide, there are two many overlaps, like there are two sections on food, but in the food glossary doesn't have some of the names of food mentioned elsewhere that takes up a whole paragraph. So buy this guide if English is the only language you can read.

    2 out of 5 stars Completely weak.......2007-06-03

This is one of the only travel books on Seoul that is easy to get. I have taken it with me on three trips to Seoul so far, and have found it almost useless. I got a better idea of places to visit from the map I got from the hotel and searching the internet than I did from this guide.

    2 out of 5 stars Needs Reworking.......2007-03-10

Lonely Planet Seoul is poorly organized and riddled with inaccuracies; unfortunately it is the only comprehensive, recent Seoul guide (in English) on the market. I used the book to get an overview of Seoul, but shockingly, found the tourist information office maps and guides more useful and accurate. The website Seoul Style offers much more interesting eating, entertainment, and shopping suggestions, but very occasionally I'll refer to the Lonely Planet for further ideas.
The book ought to be organized by neighborhood rather than subject; it's aggravating to visit an area of Seoul and flip between different chapters, looking for the two inches of print on a given activity in a particular area. Other Lonely Planet and Fodor's guides usually integrate all suggestions by neighborhood and accurately portray those suggestions onto maps. One can get an overview of the different areas when the descriptions are integrated, especially if the author writes an introductory paragraph about a neighborhood's feel; to Robinson, it seems that places are just places, with no 'there' there. In reality, each area of Seoul does have a unique feel and meaning.
In the LP Seoul guide, the maps' numbered descriptions are often mis-categorized (e.g., under 'Shopping' the author suggests the bookstore Seoul Selection, but when you look for the location on the map, it is listed under 'Entertainment'; when poring through dozens of suggestions in tiny font, it is frustrating to check all the categories to compensate for his carelessness). The layout and selection of maps in general is mediocre, and leave little sense of the scale or organization of Seoul; for instance, Robinson devotes two pages of maps to Jamsil to depict just a few activities, and leaves the bottom half of those two pages devoid of suggestion, but gives the large, very happening area of Gangnam / Apjugong just one page. Adjacent Cheongdam, which a favorite hangout for younger Koreans and in 'feel' and location is much closer to Apjugong, he places on the Jamsil map, but doesn't provide any activities.
The transliteration between Hangul and English is frequently bizarre, which makes it difficult to decipher the names of neighborhoods and places. It is better to use the Tourist Maps (in other cities I've never relied on tourist maps, but Seoul is different), for the transliteration and neighborhood names are more commonly understood by Koreans. His language guide is also transliterated ineffectually; a traveler trying to follow his phonetics would never be understood by a Korean. For vowels pronounced 'e' he writes 'i'; the number 1 is correctly pronounced like eel; he writes 'il', which is perfect if he means the French pronunciation of 'il'; same for 2: pronounced e, he writes i - again, great for French, but he's transliterating to English, so it's wrong.
LP Seoul needs to be rewritten by a very organized, clear thinker who possesses a current understanding of Seoul and Hangul-English translation, yet who recalls the needs of a first-time visitor to this dynamic city.

        Book Description

A historical novel imagines the riveting story behind the Book of Ruth

Sitting beneath a tree in ancient Bethlehem, Osnath, niece of the prophet Samuel, examines a dusty scrap of parchment she found hidden in her relativeÂ's scroll room. Scrawled on the decaying page is an intriguing message addressed to Ruth the Moabite—great-grandmother of David, the future king of Israel. Compelled to discover the truth about RuthÂ's life, Osnath begins searching for the identity of RuthÂ's nameless lover and the secret that is cloaked behind his anonymity. But as she digs deeper into the past, she finds her inquiries blocked by DavidÂ's brother Eliab. What is the long-buried truth he fears will come to light? And what is the threat that RuthÂ's story poses to his familyÂ's vast inheritance?

Eva Etzioni-HalevyÂ's novel deftly interweaves history and fiction to create a compelling exploration of a prominent biblical figure. Told through the voices of both Osnath and Ruth herself, The Garden of Ruth transports readers into the ancient world—and offers a dramatic and thought-provoking new perspective on a well-known tale.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars wonderful story.......2007-08-20

This is one of the best and most un-put-downable books I've read in a long time. In fact, I was enjoying reading it so much that I didn't want it to end!

The book transports the reader to biblical times and to the lives of its two main characters: Osnath and Ruth. Osnath is a product of the author's imagination while Ruth is the famous biblical character who is the first convert to Judaism in Jewish history. Through the story of Osnath, the author reveals her interpretation of the behind-the-scenes story of Ruth's life.

Like the author's first book, the Song of Hannah, which I also found captivating, the Garden of Ruth had me in suspense from the first page wondering where it would lead and what would happen. It is a story about women in biblical times who were, after all, just like us in so many ways.

        I'd really recommend this.

        3 out of 5 stars Faulty translation.......2007-08-14

Faulty translation detracts from the reading enjoyment of this book. It is easy to see that in the original Hebrew, this must be a gem of a book. The story is imaginative and compelling. However, the English translation is stilted and forced, with archaic language that detracts from the ability to read this book easily.

4 out of 5 stars daughter liked it.......2007-08-10

16 yo daughter who has read The Red Tent 25+ times said this book was "pretty good". She has ready everything that has come out re: biblical women/fiction; sO I trust her judgement.

        4 out of 5 stars Biblical romance.......2007-07-05

The Garden of Ruth delves into history as the bible describes it, and adds embellishment and intrigue as well. Eva Etzioni-Halevy's style of writing draws the reader into the world of Ruth and her descendants, thereby making all of their lives into a continuous beautiful story never told. The characters are intensely connected by the bonds of their religion and family history, which the years and time fail to separate. The book is truly written from a woman's point of view, and sheds light on the unknown world of Jewish women who were important, scarcely mentioned biblical heroes, and at the same time brings to full light their human weaknesses, needs and tribulations. Any woman reader can very easily feel their pain, and elation.

        4 out of 5 stars Historicl Fiction.......2007-06-14

The Garden of Ruth is the second in a series by Eva Etzioni-Halevy. I was suprised to find that the romantic scenes in the book are quite graphic. The book was well written and the story was entertaining if somewhat different from my understanding of the stories told in the Bible. A good novel for those who enjoy this type of reading, but I would caution readers strongly in regards to the graphic scenes included.

One of the writers for the highly acclaimed television show Monk presents a series of 14 unique solve-it-yourself mini-mysteries, all with a historical setting. At the end of each intriguing tale, armchair sleuths begin their own detective work with the aid of key questions and some crucial clues--including an interview with a witness, lab analysis of the evidence, or an examination of the crime scene. The historical settings range from ancient Rome to 1940s Hollywood, and the subjects include Jamaican pirates; death in Venice amid a masked ball; Jack the Ripper copycats.

The answers to the mysteries referred to events that weren't even in the text. It didn't make any sense.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading material as well as mysteries.......2006-08-01

I had just as much fun reading the stories as solving the puzzles. The book has a nice way of breaking down clues, reasonings, and solutions. The misteries are challenging, but reasonable at the same time. BTW, the author is a writer of the TV series Monk. I'm a big fan of the show. Brilliant writer. I'm looking for more of his books.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful -- Just Wonderful.......2006-03-07

I LOVE whodunits. I have solved thousands of whodunit puzzles over the years in multiple languages. I consider myself to be a tough critic.
However, this new book by Hy Conrad way exceeded my expectation. All the stories were unique, original, and written beautifully. The book first provides the mystery, followed by additional clues, followed by one or two definitive clues, and then the correct answer. I enjoyed the process of going through all of them in sequence while thinking long and hard. Even for a seasoned veteran like me, some puzzles were quite tough -- tough enough that I had to look at the definitive clues.
I recommend this book not only to older children (who enjoy mystery puzzles) but also to non-English speakers, who wish to improve their English skills while having some fun.

I am so glad Hy has written a new collection of murder mystery puzzles. I'm always sad when I've worked through his puzzles, because then I have to wait a few more years for what I know will be a new splendid collection.:.)

I just love these anthologies, and it's so easy to get confused as to which ones are already in the library. Here's a great book - but it's the SAME BOOK as "The Mammoth Book of Historical Whodunits". Silly thing to let happen at the publishing house ~~~~ Great stuff, but either one will do!

5 out of 5 stars Another Marvelous Collection of Historical Whodunits! .......2005-11-21

This is Ashley's third "historical whodunit" offering. I love 'em all! I much prefer this smorgasbord approach to mysteries versus volumes with just Roman, Egyptian, et al mysteries, which are too much of the same thing for my tastes. Like the others in the series, this book can be read straight through or the reader can jump around instead, sampling different time-periods. The historical whodunits are great for leisurely lunchtime reading or curling up with at bedtime. In short, great authors, interesting stories. Highly recommended!

        4 out of 5 stars Historical Whodunits.......2005-10-26

To me historical mysteries are so much more pleasant than contemporary ones. Perhaps it is because the historical ones are not in the least threatening. This book of short mysteries is not only very pleasant to read, but it gave me a list of new authors to look up in the library.

Historical = before the author's birth.

The short stories herein are divided into 4 sections. Most were first published in _Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine_; 5 were first printed in this collection, noted below as "original". Ellis Peters' foreword should interest Cadfael fans, as she talks a little about how she came to create the series.

            Part I: THE ANCIENT WORLD

Herodotus: "The Thief versus King Rhampsinitus" - Yes, *that* Herodotus, the legendary historian - this story is more than 2000 years old. The King is believed to be Ramses III, allowing for the Greek historian's rendering of the name. This isn't a "who?" story so much as "how're they going to get caught?" - the king's builder put a few extra features into the treasury building for clandestine withdrawals.

James, Breni: "Socrates Solves a Murder" Style imitates Plato's Socratic dialogues when Socrates is speaking or being spoken to. The human corpse was found in a shrine, mixed with the smashed remains of the statue of Eros therein.

Nichols, Wallace: "The Treasury Thefts" is really 2 stories about Sollius, a slave in the time of Marcus Aurelius who acts as the brain behind his master's problem-solving successes. "The Case of the Empress' Jewels" is also included, the 2 stories being closely related.

Peters, Elizabeth: "The Locked Tomb Mystery" *Not* a Peabody/Emerson story; Amenhotep Sa Hapu was a real 14th century BC sage, here investigating a tomb robbery.

Reed, Mary and Mayer, Eric: "A Byzantine Mystery" (original) John is Emperor Justinian's chamberlain, and a Mithraist rather than a Christian, but his life is forfeit if he doesn't recover a stolen fragment of the True Cross without letting the theft become public.

Roberts, John Maddox: "Mightier Than the Sword" (original) Set after the first 4 SPQR novels; Decius, searching for building violations rather than corpses, isn't pleased to find one in a nice new townhouse - not even a disgusting tenement cellar where you'd at least *expect* it.

Tremayne, Peter: "The High King's Sword" (original) An early Sister Fidelma story, dealing with the death of the joint High Kings of Ireland in the Yellow Plague year of 664 AD. The abbot who advises the Great Assembly has summoned her not because of the deaths - the plague did that - but because one of the symbols needed to lawfully inaugurate a new High King has been stolen.

van Gulik, Robert: "He Came with the Rain" - from _Judge Dee at Work_ (see).

            PART II: THE MIDDLE AGES

Frazer, Margaret: "The Witch's Tale" (original) was referred to obliquely in Frazer's Dame Frevisse novel _The Reeve's Tale_: that of how a local witch once killed a man with a spell, supposedly in self-defense.

Gores, Joe: "A Sad and Bloody Hour" - the narrator is a young actor and wannabe-playwright grieving for Kit Marlowe, his friend and mentor. Then a blowsy-looking woman approaches him, claiming knowledge of suspicious circumstances surrounding the death - but she's not the best possible witness.

Harding, Paul: "The Confession of Brother Athelstan" (original) A supposedly friendly joust between two unfriendly knights ends in a death when an unblunted lance is planted on one of the combatants; Athelstan and Cranston go back on duty, having been spectators. [Set during John of Gaunt's regency for Richard II.]

Mathieson, Theodore: "Leonardo da Vinci, Detective" Mathieson wrote a series of these, each using the special abilities of a different historical character to tackle a mystery. Leonardo, past sixty, is surprised at a summons from the Queen to investigate a murder, but his insatiable curiosity extends even to this.

Peters, Ellis: "The Price of Light" - a Brother Cadfael story from _A Rare Benedictine_ (see).

Pulver, Mary Monica: "Father Hugh and the Deadly Scythe" (This author is the half of 'Margaret Frazer' who left the team; Hugh is a 15th-century priest in Oxfordshire, but the convent involved isn't Frevisse's.)

            PART III: REGENCY AND GASLIGHT

Butler, Raymond: "Captain Nash and the Wroth Inheritance" - see reviews of the novel of this name (this is it - it's a short novel, not a short story).

Carr, John Dickson: "The Gentleman from Paris" Locked-room tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, written in the form of a letter.

Harrison, Michael: "Murder in the Rue Royale" picks up Poe's detective Dupin.

de la Torre, Lillian: "Murder Lock'd In" - a Dr. Sam: Johnson story not appearing in either _Dr. Sam: Johnson, Detector_ or _The Detections of Dr. Sam Johnson_, in which Boswell (the narrator, his real-life biographer) first met him.

Hoch, Edward D.: "The Golden Nugget Poker Game" features Hoch's western gunman Ben Snow in Yukon territory in 1898.

Post, Melville Davisson: "The Doomdorf Mystery" features Post's early 19th-century Virginia gentleman, the narrator's uncle Abner, finding Doomdorf shot dead in his cabin, and the only two people around both confessed - but neither knew how he'd died, so what happened?

Rafferty, S.S.: "The Christmas Masque" A Captain Cork story set at Christmas, 1754 (about the middle of the series). His sidekick and business associate likes celebrating it in New York rather than Puritan Connecticut, as long as they don't celebrate till February, or neglect business too much for this puzzle-solving sideline. (See Rafferty's _Fatal Flourishes_ collection for more.)

            PART IV: HOLMES AND BEYOND

Doyle, Adrian Conan: "The Case of the Deptford Horror" - from _The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes_, part of Doyle's efforts to continue his father's work.

Stevens, R.L. (aka Edward D. Hoch): "Five Rings in Reno" Alternate history in which Arthur Conan Doyle accepted an invitation to Reno to referee a heavyweight championship fight. (Offer really happened, but he backed out in our timeline.)

An appendix, "The Chroniclers of Crime: The Forerunners of Sherlock Holmes" is a timeline of fictional detectives' activities from 2000 BC (Christie's _Death Comes as the End_) to 1870 AD. An afterword "Old-Time Detection" by Arthur Griffiths discusses the development of *real* detection in history.

3 out of 5 stars Great idea, only so-so execution.......2002-04-15

The premise of this book is mysteries written in a time historical to the author. Some of the selections are much better than others; there were enough mediocre ones to keep the rating to 3 stars. You'd think the premise broad enough to be able to come up w/ uniformly good stories. It definitely introduced me to some new authors I'll follow up on (one of the best reasons to read a collection like this). The editor did a nice job of covering a range of historical periods. I particularly loved the inclusion of a short piece of Herodotus, both for the story itself and because of the creativity involved in including him in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough Historical Mysteries!.......2007-05-13

To me historical mysteries are so much more pleasant than contemporary ones. Perhaps it is because the historical ones are not in the least threatening. This book of short mysteries is not only very pleasant to read, but it gave me a list of new authors to look up in the library.

4 out of 5 stars The reluctant detective.......2003-10-28

I was surprised to read the rather lukewarm editorial reviews for this series, I think they're alot of fun. Auguste Didier, a French Chef who loves English cooking, just wants to be left in peace to get on with his cooking, but keeps getting involved in murders, much against his will. In this instalment he is in the seaside resort of Broadstairs, preparing a banquet for a metting of literary Lions celebrating the life of Charles Dickens (Broadstairs is full of Dickens associations). One of the guests at the banquet unexpectedly expires, and poor Auguste is dragged into the mystery. Luckily Inspector Rose of Scotland Yard is holidaying in nearby Ramsgate, so he is on hand to help Auguste solve the crime. This is a very amusing series with likeable characters and lots of interesting period detail, I'm sorry they don't seem to be better liked.
