Customer Reviews:
While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable........2006-11-07
Vets as well as owners of either ferrets or rabbits will appreciate this concise guide for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in either. A series of formatted topics address all common conditions, covering diagnosis, treatment and medication and listing topics alphabetically for quick consultation. Each condition receives an overview of the basics, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and medications. While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable.

Successful Small-Scale Farming: An Organic Approach.......2007-07-15
This book is chock full of great advice! Add it to your library and refer to it often.
So, you think you wanna be a farmer?.......2007-01-06
Written in the late '70s, this book will scare you off the idealistic vision of farming and tune you into some of the economic and other realities. It's dry. It's nuts-and-bolts. It's not groovy. It's about dirt and tractors and seed.
The book attempts to give you a complete how-to, but instead you walk away realizing there is a lot to learn.
A dreamers book with few details.......2002-08-20
The book started off getting me real excited about sustainable farming. I was eager to turn the page and learn more, but as i turned the page, nothing materialized. I learned a lot about soil health and management, but when it got around to details about specific vegetables, growing seasons, and pest prevention, the book was lacking.
No b.s, uh....manure!.......2000-07-16
This book is for people who either live and farm in the country already, or have some realastic experience about what it is to work for a living. Anyone who has ever tried to bring in a crop, will appreciate the down-to-earth basic information provided. If you are looking for information about how to make a pretty garden, look elsewhere. this is a not to be missed reference, right up there with your county extension agent's telephone number.
A Classic!.......1999-02-09
Anyone owning or planning to own a small farm will find this handbook an invaluable guide to both the real potential and the harsh realities in making a full or part-time living on the land - buying land, growing and marketing your crops. Concise how-to. 134 pages.

Very informative.......2007-04-23
I agree with the previous review. It is written in England so the terminology and measurements are a bit different, but very comprehensive for a small book.
Wonderfully comprehensive.......2001-07-12
This book is a must for any goatkeeper. It is an invaluable commodity on the farm. I have turned to its pages countless times, both as a refresher and during emergenices. The information covers everyday concerns as well as more extensive descriptions of disease and preventative medicine. I had previously found it difficult to find a really good reference book on goats, but once I found this book, I need not look any more!

Excellent for those involved in livestock management.
Customer Reviews:
Good for beginners, too basic for more advanced people.......2005-12-10
I got this book for a livestock management class, glanced through it, and never looked at it again. It goes through how to handle all sorts of different animals, which is great for beginners, but way too basic if you've already worked with them. I wouldn't waste your money on it unless you are an absolute beginner in the animal science world.
clear illustrations, directions and descriptions.......2004-10-02
I loved this book when I used it for class, and kept it for reference afterwards. I really liked how direct and clear the infomation was, I felt that if the need arose, I would be able to appropriately execute a new restraint, etc based on this book. It has a good deal of very relevant information, especially for someone who might not be as familiar with handling a species, for instance a cow person who needs to help someone with their swine. And for someone who might not have been around livestock, there is a lot to learn as well with plenty of illustrations so even if you are still learning the terminology you can see what is being described.
Book Description
This popular and widely praised book describes everything you need to know about selecting and raising small livestock.
Long the primary reference for anyone who keeps animals as a sustainable food source, this latest edition includes up-to-date information on breeds and breeding, feed, disease prevention, housing, and management. The book also includes a chapter on growing feed; appendices covering disease identification and treatment, manure, tanning, incubators, and injections; and a catalog of supplemental resources. Country Journal calls it "a handbook in the true sense of the word. You can pick it up and turn to any section to find quickly the information needed." 55 black & white line illustrations, index.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you needed to know about raising your own animals.......2007-03-31
This is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of raising your own livestock. The author not only put great information into the book, he also wrote it by telling stories that helped me to better understand and retain the information. I bought the book to learn more about raising a few cattle for both milk and beef, but after reading about other livestock, my wife and I are looking forward to raising a few other types. It even tought us how to save money on feed by giving recipes and directions for getting your animals feed from nature. A must have book if you want to raise your own poultry, or livestock.
Everything to get started!.......2005-11-17
#1 goes into breeds, #2 goes into needs, #3 goes into purchasing AND how to CHOOSE healthy animals, #4 how to house and care for them!! Everything! I am sure there is more to each animal, but this is THE best intro book! I am so happy with my nrew load of reading materials!! I cant wait to get this all started!!
This is the best of the best.......2003-06-28
Anyone who would like to put a few animals in the backyard for eggs or meat or milk or everything altogether, will save hundreds of headaches, and probably hundreds of dollars, by buying this book and taking Steven Thomas's suggestions seriously. There are now dozens of these kinds of books out there, and I own a number of them (including "Barnyard In Your Backyard" which is nowhere near as good as this) but none of them comes close to "Backyard Livestock" for practicality of advice, conciseness of expression, and comprehensiveness. I have sheep, chicken, etc., and this has been far more reliable than any competing manuals that I own or know of. You can't not get it! It's indispensable.
Great Starter Book!.......2003-05-13
To get information easily and quickly, this book is concise and informative. We bought this book when we first started our little farm and 10 years later are still referring to it! An excellent buy.
Great resource book!.......2002-05-02
This book was very beneficial in all aspects of raising small-farm animals. Great reference manual for beginners. I certainly listed this book in the resources directory of my new title, Farm Animals: Your Guide to Raising Livestock, because I felt it would be an awesome addition to my own farm related books!

The Ecology of Neotropical Savannas
ASIN: 0849329876 |
Book Description
This volume is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas and seasonally dry forests of the neotropics. Focusing on the molecular phylogenies and population genetics for uncovering biogeographic history, it addresses three questions: Where are the centers of species-richness and endemism that make up the floras of these ecosystems? How and why did this endemism and diversity arise? Are these ecosystems adequately protected, and if not how can this be best achieved? It also looks at evolutionary history, including links to the development of analogous vegetation in Africa. According to the Midwest Book Review (August 2006) this work is "...a seminal and necessary addition to professional and academic library Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies reference collections."
Customer Reviews:
The first systematic treatment.......2006-08-12
This book is the result of a plant diversity symposium that composed part of a conference held at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in September 2003. As with most scientific books of this type where the information is the result of research that was conducted very recently, there are numerous contributors, more than fifty. They come from most of the world: England, United States, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Switzerland, France, and many others.
Most of the book covers Latin and South America with discussions on the types of plants found in these environments. Only one chapter is devoted to Africa, the other large area where savannas and seasonally dry forests are to be found. And it primarily discusses the differences.
This is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant diversity in these neotropical ecosystems. It is a monumental work.
The first extensive compilation focused specifically upon patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas .......2006-08-09
Collaboratively compiled, organized and edited by the team of R. Toby Pennington, James A Ratter (both of whom are with the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh) and Gwilym P. Lewis (from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), "Neotropical Savannas And Seasonally Dry Forests: Plant Diversity, Biogeography, And Conservations" is the latest addition to the prestigious 'Systematics Association Special Volumes' series (under the general editorial supervision of Alan Warren (Department of Zoology, The Natural History Museum, London, England) and the first extensive compilation focused specifically upon patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas and seasonally dry forests of the neotropics. This scholarly and expert 484-page overview (contributed to by 59 contributors from around the world) succinctly summarizes what is currently known of the evolutionary history of these particular ecosystems, including links to the development of analogous vegetation in Africa. "Neotropical Savannas And Seasonally Dry Forests" focus on plant biodiversity and the molecular phylogenies and molecular population genetics for uncovering the biogeographic history of these ecosystems making it a seminal and necessary addition to professional and academic library Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies reference collections.

Customer Reviews:
Discouraging.......2006-04-04
I wanted to learn more about Bantam Chickens as I was interested in keeping them as pets in my backyard. Although the writer gives quite a bit of information, the info given was very discouraging and I gave up the idea after reading the book. Months later I found a website that gave a more down-to-earth approach that inspired me to try keeping Bantams as pets. Also, as with many other books on animals, the writer seems to fall back on the many diseases a chicken could possibly contract as a way to fill pages. If you wrote a book about Humans, you could imagine how many pages could be devoted to disease, rather than more interesting aspects of Humans or their behavior. I'm sorry I bought this book.
Not worth it.......2004-04-24
Frankly, I didn't think this book was worth the money. There is quite a bit of misinformation in the book, and since it was originally released in Europe, the pictures of the chickens in it are identified as they would be in Europe which is pretty meaningless to folks in America. Folks here who would be looking to purchase bantam chickens using the names in this book wouldn't be able to find them, and the book does not give the equivalent American name.
On the other hand, the photography is magnificent! If you just want a book with really nice pictures of bantam chickens, this one is really great. However, the rest of the book leaves a lot to be desired.
Not Just For Bantam Owners...........2000-07-17
I thought that this was a very good introduction to keeping chickens of all sizes, and is written in nice clear terms. The book is well-illustrated, and gives a 'lowdown' on many breeds of bantam, along with very helpful advice on housing and care of your flock. I particularly liked the way the author tries to give an insight on behaviour, and how chickens 'tick'. I'm very pleased I bought this book!
