Book Description
Rome. AD 70. Private eye Marcus Didius Falco knows his way around the eternal city. He can handle the muggers, the police and most of the girls. But one fresh sixteen-year-old, Sosia Camillina, finds him a case no Roman should be getting his nose into. Some friends, Romans and countrymen are doing a highly profitable, if highly illegal, trade in silver ingots or pigs. For Falco it's the start of a murderous trail that leads far beyond the seven hills.
Customer Reviews:
The Start of a Wonderful Series.......2006-09-18
This is the first novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on the part of the author to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in Rome in AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.
Falco has done his time in the legions in that god forsaken place called Britain and it is the last place on earth that he would return to through choice but he has been told by the powers that be that he will go back to Britain and no, there is no choice.
When he arrives the weather is even worse than he remembered and the natives are still as unfriendly as ever. He just wants to complete his mission, find the missing silver and get the hell out of it, that is until he meets the lovely Helena Justina and if he thought he was having a hard time before he met her, he was in for an almighty shock.
What a fun book - I feel like I lived in ancient Roman times!.......2006-08-01
This isn't an easy book to find - I think its out of print - but its great. Lindsey Davis does a great job of bringing ancient Rome back to life. The characters are believeable and the situations seem real/plausible. If you enjoy traveling through time, albeit virtually, find and read this book.
Awesome read full of intrigue and history.......2006-02-18
I first had to read this book for my Latin language class in college. Well, I was looking for something to read recently and remembered this book. I always love a good mystery. This book definitely fits the bill. In addition to just plain good writing (hers not mine!), the book is intelligent and historical. I had forgotten all of the history crammed into the book. It is rare that a writer can turn out a thoroughly enjoyable read combined fiction, history, and intelligence. Bravo! I am now searching for her other books to enjoy!
Needs suspension of disbelief.......2006-02-01
I will proceed by means of an (obviously enough) comparision with Saylor's Roma Subrosa series: Saylor's Gordianus, anachronistic as he was, at least knew his place, while in order to enjoy Davies' Falco, you have to begin by believing that a Roman humilior - who had even to qualify for the corn dole sometimes - of the Early Roman Empire could adress a senator and his daughter on an equal footing. If you can achieve that (as I did, with an effort) the novel becomes enjoyable.
Makes the Roman Empire come alive!.......2005-12-18
This first book of a series about a working class Roman detective, who makes himself out to be a scoundrel while behaving with honor, is a detective story, a romance, but most of all great history about ancient Rome and Roman Briton, with lots of great characters from slaves to the emperor. It should be in print, along with the rest of the series.

Book Description
The English Pig is an account of pigs and pig-keeping from the sixteenth century to modern times, concentrating on the domestic, cottage pig, rather than commercial farming. In Victorian England the pig was an integral part of village life: both visible and essential. Living in close proximity to its owners, fed on scraps and the subject of perennial interest, the pig when dead provided the means to repay social and monetary debts as well as excellent meat. While the words associated with the pig, such as 'hoggish', 'swine' and 'pigsty', and phrases like 'greedy as a pig', associate the pig with greed and dirt, this book shows the pig's virtues, intelligence and distinctive character. It is a portrait of one of the most recognisable but least known of farm animals, seen here also in many photographs and other representations. The pig has a modest place in literature from Fielding's pig-keeping Parson Trulliber to Hardy's Jude the Obscure and to Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford. In modern times, while vanishing from the sight of most people, it has been sentimentalised in children's stories and commercialised in advertisements.

Book Description
Unpretentious, sophisticated, and always appetizing advice from a celebrated authority
For more than thirty years, R. W. Apple Jr. has roamed the United States as an eyewitness to history. Here, in Apple's America, his robust enthusiasm for the food and culture of New England, the South and West, the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and his native Middle West carries him to forty great cities, where he proves to be our ideal guide--amused and amusing, knowledgeable, indefatigable, and endlessly curious.
From Boston to Honolulu, from Montreal to Las Vegas, Cincinnati to Seattle, Johnny Apple explores the landmarks, architecture, business, culture, and, of course, the food and beverages of his favorite urban communities. Capturing the tone and style of American city life to perfection, he shows us the hidden treasures, the best buildings, the famous landmarks, the historical aura, and the present-day realities that make each city so memorable. And in each he recommends several places to stay, numerous places to eat, and sites or activities you shouldn't miss. No traveler in the United States will want to do without his recommendations.
Customer Reviews:
Read this before you go.......2007-01-17
Lots of terrific info for near to home travelers. I gave it as a gift & the receiver (30's male)was thrilled.
Johnny Apple will be missed.......2006-12-15
I always thought that Johnny Apple was the model correspondent. The insights, the historical perspective, and the narrative drive he brought to his dispatches were unique. This book, an assemblage of his writings about North America, reflects his wonderful style. Johnny died in September 2006, a victim of thoracic cancer. But his writings live on -- through this book, his earlier, "Apple's Europe," and, of course, 43 years of reports for The New York Times.
Disappointing.......2005-08-02
I bought this book thinking it would be new and different from all the other traveler's guides. I was sadly mistaken. I looked up my city - Boston. There is nothing described that you couldn't find on the internet for free. In addition, the recommended restaurants are either tired old spots that are just riding on their reputations or yesterday's hot spots, which in my opinion, are overpriced and not that great.
40 cities are covered - each is given about 10 pages (plus or minus a couple). That's not enough to even scratch the surface, especially when you consider the dimensions of the book. I guess I should have realized that before I bought the book, but I heard Apple interviewed on NPR and thought he was interesting; unfortunately, his book is not.
the best travel book everq.......2005-07-27
Hands down, this is the best travel book I've ever read -- and I enjoyed reading it cover to cover, unlike many travel books. It's a combination of where to eat, stay and what to see as well as a fascinating history/commentary that really gives you a sense of what a city is like, the pulse. Apple is a fantastic writer and I trust his restaurant recommendations over any other writer/critic out there -- in the cities I know well, he's definitely included the best of the best eats, both high brow and low brow. I really hope he can update and re-publish his European guide soon. I don't want to travel anywhere without his guidance any more!
Good book for reading........2005-07-20
I had a wonderful time reading this book. Not bad. Go's into some interesting topics and covers the bases for the most part.

The Journal of
Douglas Allen Deeds
The Donner Party Expedition
Summary by Nick Huitt
Once there was a boy who joined the Donner Party Expedition on the way to California who got in a lot of problems once he got stuck in the woods. Another time he almost died in a blizzard of cold ness and starvation.
The main character is Douglas Allen Deeds. He is a 15-year-old boy. He likes to go on adventures. He has a best friend named Edward.
The problems the train had got stuck in the snow. The Chickasha Indians stole and killed over 20 heads of cattle. Later in the book they tried to walk on foot, but some left and some died 2 got to California.
The boy tried to stay alive by eating food and not sharing with the others the food he caught. The main thing this book is about is completing his journey.
I think this book would be better for older kids. Because people get murdered, and die. It also had bad language. I thought this was a good story about a young boy's adventure.

Reading this book will make you think about what's important.......2004-07-12
In May 1846, a large wagon train of settlers left Independence, Missouri, heading West. Many Easterners were on the trails at that time, looking for land, business opportunities, and better lives. They traveled across the country in wagon trains to California and Oregon. But the people who headed for California on May 12, 1846, under the leadership of George Donner, did not arrive at their destination safely. Instead, they headed into history.
To readers, the name "The Donner Party" = cannibals. Beset with bad leadership, bad luck, bad timing, and bad decisions, the tragic Donner Party suffered unbelievable hardships. Trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during a bitter winter, only 60 miles from their destination, the survivors began eating the bodies of those who had died.
THE JOURNAL OF DOUGLAS ALLEN DEEDS tells the story of The Donner Party through the eyes of a boy. Douglas is a 15-year-old orphan moving West to build a life for himself and become somebody. All he has is his horse. Without a wagon or any money to buy one, Douglas is grateful that Mr. Donner lets him hitch his dreams to the wagon train. He can shoot well, and he shares whatever. He becomes good friends with Edward Breen, whose generous family takes him in and makes him feel loved and needed. Douglas and Edward share their plans for making their fortunes when they get to California.
But the settlers don't make good time. They travel only a few miles a day. Months go by, during which other wagon trains arrive at their destinations, but The Donner Party just keeps slogging along the trail. All of them are greenhorns, even the leaders. And they are following the advice in a book written by Mr. Lansford Hastings. Everybody on the wagon train believes Mr. Hastings' book as if it were the Bible. Following his trails and his shortcuts, they ignore the advice of a mountain man who tells them that the trails Hastings took on horseback can't be followed by wagons and oxen. The settlers in the Donner Party believe that it's the mountain man who's lying, and that Mr. Hastings will meet them at Fort Bridger, just as he promised he would, and lead them to California. In fact, they believe Mr. Hastings all the way to their entrapment in the Sierra Nevadas.
In this book, you will meet every kind of human being there is --- the gullible, the boastful, the self-sacrificing, and the stingy. There are those who give their lives so others can live, and those who refuse to share their food with people who are starving to death. There are those who reduce themselves to cannibalism, and those who refuse to justify such acts. Who survives? At what cost? Reading this book will make you think about what's really most important in life.

Failed to keep my attention, STAY AWAY.......2002-08-26
This book is based on the journal of a young orphan who is traveling west to California. He goes on the ill-fated Donner Party Expedition. This route was thought to be faster. I took this book out from the library thinking it would be a fun and quick read just like the other My Name Is America, Royal Diaries, and Dear America books. Boy, was I wrong. I found myself struggling to read on. The characters were a bore. The basis was interesting (the reason why i chose the book) but everything else was terrible. Please dont waste your time on this! I recommend The Journal of Scott Pendelton Collins instead of this terrible book. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
The best "My Name Is America.".......2002-08-13
"The Journal of Douglas Allen Deeds : The Donner Party Expedition, 1846" is the best "My Name Is America" book that I have read so far. Giving just the right amount of details, Philbrick was able to show the horrors the emigrants suffered, while trying to make a new life in California. I read this book after "Against All Odds: The Lucy Scott Mitchum Story" which always referred to what happened to The Donner Party. Having not knowing what happened exactly, this book helped me understand why they were so scared. The historical note at the end was very, very interesting, but not for readers with weak stomachs (it doesn't go into great detail, but could let your imagination go wild.). I most definitely recommend.

Book Description
Suppressed by the former communist governments and overshadowed by a focus on German and Dutch early modernism, the outstanding achievements of functionalist architects in Eastern Europe have been largely ignored by historians and critics. this book is the first retrospective ever published of functionalist buildings completed between the wars, the "Golden Age" of modernism, in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland. It is illustrated with rare archival and current photographs of the most famous and exemplary projects in each country: sanatoriums, hotels, sports facilities, private houses, offices, and religious and governmental buildings. Among the illustrious architects whose work is presented here are Karel Teige, Bohuslav Fuchs, and Josef Gocar of Czechoslovakia; Alfred Forbat and Jozsef Fischer of Hungary; and Lucian Korngold, Barbara and Stanislaw Brukalski, and Bohdeon Lachert of Poland. An introductory essay examines functionalism in Eastern Europe from an international perspective; essays by prominent architectural historians from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland explore competing ideas and functionalism in each country.
Book Description
The development of neural networks has now reached the stage where they are employed in a large variety of practical contexts. However, to date the majority of such implementations have been in software. While it is generally recognised that hardware implementations could, through performance advantages, greatly increase the use of neural networks, to date the relatively high cost of developing Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) has meant that only a small number of hardware neurocomputers has gone beyond the research-prototype stage. The situation has now changed dramatically: with the appearance of large, dense, highly parallel FPGA circuits it has now become possible to envisage putting large-scale neural networks in hardware, to get high performance at low costs. This in turn makes it practical to develop hardware neural-computing devices for a wide range of applications, ranging from embedded devices in high-volume/low-cost consumer electronics to large-scale stand-alone neurocomputers. Not surprisingly, therefore, research in the area has recently rapidly increased, and even sharper growth can be expected in the next decade or so.
Nevertheless, the many opportunities offered by FPGAs also come with many challenges, since most of the existing body of knowledge is based on ASICs (which are not as constrained as FPGAs). These challenges range from the choice of data representation, to the implementation of specialized functions, through to the realization of massively parallel neural networks; and accompanying these are important secondary issues, such as development tools and technology transfer. All these issues are currently being investigated by a large number of researchers, who start from different bases and proceed by different methods, in such a way that there is no systematic core knowledge to start from, evaluate alternatives, validate claims, and so forth.
FPGA Implementations of Neural Networks aims to be a timely one that fill this gap in three ways: First, it will contain appropriate foundational material and therefore be appropriate for advanced students or researchers new to the field. Second, it will capture the state of the art, in both depth and breadth and therefore be useful researchers currently active in the field. Third, it will cover directions for future research, i.e. embryonic areas as well as more speculative ones.
