The World Without Us
ASIN: 1741143918 |
Book Description
This provocative anthropological study offers insights into the thousands of paintings found in small, raised caves on cliff faces in the remote and rugged Kimberley Ranges of Northwest Australia. With lithe, graceful, human figures depicted in a fashion altogether different from that of even the oldest traditional art, these rock paintings have astounded experts since their discovery in 1891. This discussion offers intriguing speculation into who the people who created these paintings could be and explains how new dating techniques helped to clear up many unanswered questions. Encapsulating the mystery that still remains about these paintings, this fascinating book will capture the attention of anyone interested in art, art history, or archeology.

Wandjina art - aboriginal culture.......2000-06-14
This book gives an absorbing view of the life and culture of some of the Aboriginal peoples of northern Western Australia. It describes a journey, physical and spiritual, of collaboration between a senior elder and law man of the ngarinyin people and a white Australian photographer. Photographs by Jutta Malnic show the vast country of the Kimberley and the magnificent rock art sites. These pictures are complemented by elegant black and white photographs taken 50 years earlier of the young David Mowaljarlai growing up in his country. The text is clearly written and contains some amusing accounts of bush travel as well as the story of David Mowaljarlai's life and quite complex accounts of the ngarinyin view of the world. The Kimberley region contains some of the most magnificent rock art in the world and for a visitor some of the most memorable images are of the wandjina figures. These are human-like figures with large eyes and a halo-like appearance around their head. It is an intensely powerful experience to see a huge rock gallery of these figures. For the ngarinyin, they are powerful religious images connected with the rain-bearing monsoon clouds and must be approached with great respect. This book gives a privileged view of a world in which land, people and culture are intimately linked. If you are interested in Aboriginal art and culture, this is an important work.

Book Description
The origins of rock art in Australia are probably as old as that of the hunter-gatherers of Western Europe, well-known for the prehistoric caves of Altamira and Lascaux. That the practice of painting and engraving on rocks continues today in parts of Northern and Central Australia emphasises the importance of this art as a source of visual information for Australia's indigenous communities, Rock art can be 'read' to determine cultural processes and provides a durable record of thousands of years of cultural change. This book is an up-to-date survey of Australian rock art, presenting detailed case studies revealing the significance of both recent and ancient art for Australia's living indigenous communities. Archaeological data provides evidence of the ways in which rock art traditions have changed over 15,000 or more years in response to changes in the environment, the development of new forms of social organisation and the impact of European colonial settlement.

Customer Reviews:
Great information.......2007-06-04
I have been to South Africa before and am heading back and needed more information and this book is very thorough and helpful.
A disappointing entry in the Frommer series.......2005-01-03
I travel extensively and am a fan of Frommer's guides which I generally find to have a nice assortment of options in varying price ranges. The volume on South Africa however, was a great disappointment. If Frommer's were to be believed, you had to pay $200 and up for a decent hotel room. Fortunately I have often traveled in South Africa, enjoyed its reasonably priced accomodations, and knew such prices were nonsense. I stayed in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and other top destinations in season for less than half that much. The guide also overlooked destinations a bit off the beaten path and proved of so little use to me that I didn't bother to pack it home with me. I strongly suggest the Eyewitness guide instead or just surf the web for tons of great information from the South African Tourism Board.
South Africa Trip.......2000-12-11
An excellent reference book for anyone visiting Southern Africa. We only found a few minor errors but the recommendations on where to go and what to see were very useful.
We're looking forward to going again and will certainly take this book along. We didn't have enough time to see it all.
Don't Leave Home Without It!.......2000-08-11
We visited South Africa for 20 days in July 2000, driving from Cape Town to Kruger. Before we left we sat down at a large book store and reviewed all their South African travel books. This one looked the best and proved to be very useful, particularly for accomodations. Some of the prices had changed but the standards and services were exactly as described. This is a great book for travellers who are above the backpacker/budget level but not up to "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
Prices already outdated; frustrating index.......2000-03-28
I went in March 2000 and returned a week ago from the Western Cape. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL TRIP! But, talking about the book...
Prices for gas and some of the attractions, like Cape Point and a couple nature reserves we visited were already outdated. Gas is nearly R3/litre! I understand their economy isn't doing well, so they've had to increase prices to the visitors. Tourism is their no. 1 business.
There were several things I remember reading in the text, then later, when I wanted to see it again, I couldn't find them in the index...stuff like the Vergelegen Winery (which has amazing views and delicious wines!) and others. Not all boldface terms are in the index. This is something that could really be improved!
Lastly, I must reiterate what my hosts said: They've seen many rediculous books on Cape Town and the Western Cape and this is not one of them.
I debated between 3 and 4 stars, but remembering my frustrations with the index, I knocked it down to 3. :)

This book provides a unique opportunity to enrich the young reader's understanding of American history. 52 entertaining questions and answers about what it was like to live in the New England colonies during the years 1650 - 1730
Customer Reviews:
Life in colonial New England from the perspective of a child.......2006-05-01
Life in New England in colonial times was hard, a good growing year and people could eat well, a bad growing year and there was hunger. Harvest was an especially busy time, as everyone had to work all hours to get all of the food stored away.
This book is about how the children of that time lived. Since everything revolved around the family in their house, this is about family life from the perspective of children. What they wore what they ate, the work they did during the day, what they did for fun, what their schools were like, and how they behaved on Sunday. There were many laws, some of which were heavily enforced and others that were largely ignored.
The tithing-man would rap you if you misbehaved in church or tickle your face if you fell asleep during the service. Nearly everything that was used by the people was grown and made by them, so the explanations of how they made their goods was quite interesting. The list of standard jobs found in every village, such as the miller, blacksmith, barber, tailor and the cooper describes what professions were most valued at that time.
This is an excellent book about the life of a child in New England. While their lives are described as being difficult, they were not without joy, something that is also mentioned in detail.
One of my favorite books growing up!.......2003-12-28
I ordered this to reminisce. I remember vividly the pages and drawings that I loved in this book!! Drawings are very precious and expressive. The text of this original 1960s version is a bit dated (mentions Indians as a threat to the lives of settlers - true but not really PC to say it). There is an updated version of the book, which I haven't read. Love this one!
Excellent!.......2003-06-13
Of all the history on daily life, no book offers more practical insight into the daily lives of Colonists.
The Bible says, "Out of the mouths of babes..." Perhaps the same is true "For the eyes/ears of babes..."
Truly excellent. In all my searching through so many standard old history books, I could not find answers to the questions this book resolved.
Best of all, our kids love it!
Fascinating.......2001-01-08
A really fun, well orgainized book. My 6 and 9 year olds loved it and so did I (Mom). We have been back to it many times, looking at particular sections. I am now ordering other titles in the series.
Colonial history came alive for my kids!.......2000-03-09
I highly recommend this book. My children, 6 and 4 years old, could easily put themselves into the very clearly described settings. They got a real feel for what life was like in colonial days. It was fun to read - made for GREAT family time!

Book Description
Using a lively question-and answer-format, the author explains the American Revolution not only as a war for freedom which the American colonies fought against the British, but also as a "civil" war between the Patriots and those colonists who remained loyal to King George III. Special attention is paid to the role of children in the war and to the issues affecting them: What was life like before the Revolution? How did your life change after the Declaration of Independence? Would you have seen a battle?...Gone to school? Colorful accounts of famous figures, and words and expressions (such as "cowboy" and "John Hancock") that were coined during the Revolution enliven the text and enable readers to feel some connection with the people of the period.
Customer Reviews:
BOTH sides of the story!.......2007-10-02
Kay Moore's excellent book is of tremendous value to young students of history because it contributes something rare for younger readers -- some insight into the other side of the story of the American Revolution.
Not every colonist was in favor of war, and many fled for their lives rather than refuse to follow their conscience. Many in the colonies felt they owed their comfortable lifestyle to England, and had no intention of biting the hand that had fed them so well. They also felt that they had the rights and privilidges of free British men and women, and needed no rebellion to secure it. Much like the Civil War, families were torn apart by this issue, sometimes father against son, and brother against brother. To not tell this story would be an injustice to both sides.
Kate Moore's magnificent book, If You Lived At The Time of The American Revolution is an absolute must for students. Adults can learn a great deal from it as well.
excellent information.......2007-07-29
This book covers all of the information on the American Revolution but it is super long so it's an excellent resource but is not a read aloud unless you choose only a couple chapters at a time.
Terribly one sided account of the Revolution........2006-07-30
According the the Author's note, the purpose of this book is to show what America lost by winning the Revolution. She portrays the loyalists having been treated unfairly by the patriots, to the point of not being able to send their children to school, not being able to speak freely, and being in fear of being attacked and having their homes burned down. She fails to mention any dangers faced by the Patriots. This book is horribly one sided. I bought this for my neice, but would be ashamed to actually give it to her as a gift.
History from different perspectives!.......2003-10-11
I thought that this book was a great example of how all of our history books should be written: from multiple perspectives! All we ever hear about our history is the positive patriotic version that is sugar coated and mostly false. For once, someone has written a story for children that shares both sides of the story: Loyalist and Patriot. This book beautifully compares and contrasts the viewpoints of both sides, the impact the war had on both sides, and some of the important figures, both Loyalist and Patriot. Excellent book to get your children thinking critically about the American Revolution!
Anti-American, politically correct garbage.......2003-03-05
When I read this book I was so disappointed at the author's attempt to paint Patriots as the bad guys! She has written a "politically correct" story of the Revolutionary War. Is there anyone out there who actually believes the British should have won, or retained control of the colonies? When I pointed out to my son's teacher the not-so-subtle message in the book, she removed it from the classroom. My advice: READ THESE BOOKS BEFORE YOU BUY THEM.
