not for the rushing-about, seen-it, done-it, kind of traveler.......2006-10-18
If there is no such thing for you as having too much information, then think about buying this book. This book has walking itineraries including places to stop for rest and refreshment, and wonderful details on things to look at while you are walking and even while you are sitting down. This book is not useful for restaurants or hotels or hours that sites are open. Includes history, and comments on Venice from famous writers of the past like John Ruskin. It is to be savored.
you'll need another guidebook, but you need this one too.......2005-11-04
What a strange and wonderful little book!
Venice for Pleasure is essentially four walking tours told in a charmingly conversational style by an author who is clearly in love with Venice. Stopping in a Venetian cafe to read a passage is like having a friend leaning over your shoulder to recall the local history and gossip, point out fascinating details that you probably wouldn't have noticed, and make you smile with his dry wit.
We did all four walking tours and thoroughly enjoyed Links' companionship along the way; I can't recommend it highly enough if exploring Venice on foot is your aim. We also found the directions infallible.
Please note that this isn't a conventional guidebook, so you shouldn't expect logistical information.
Take another look.......2005-10-03
Venice for Pleasure is an off the beaten path sort of guide, filled with anecdotes, character sketches, and historic photos. Links takes his readers beyond the famous facades and brings the "theme park" to life. Fun to use then to keep and reread for reminiscence afterwards.
Venice for Pleasure.......2005-09-21
Fantastic Book!!! I bought this for my wife as a memento of our 25th Anniversary trip to Venice. It was perfect. I highly recommend it to any armchair traveler who wants to "visit" the world's most romantic city. David
For those who love Venice -- and those who are about to.......2004-08-16
Terrific read for those intent on seeing the Venice that lies beyond Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge. Whether you follow the author's routes on his strolls thru the sestieres, or just use his walks as a source of inspiration (as we did), this book is an indispensable addition to the library of anyone planning a trip to Venice. Thanks in large measure to encouragement offered by this book, we ventured into some of the nooks and crannys of this amazing city... we'll see St Mark's Basilica next time we go.

Book Description
For two and a half centuries African-American slaves sang about, prayed for, and waited on their long anticipated freedom -- a day of Jubilee. But freedom didn't come for slaves at the same time. DAYS OF JUBILEE chronicles the various stages of U.S. emancipation beginning with those slaves who were freed for their service during the Revolutionary War, to those who were freed by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Using slave narratives, letters, diaries, military orders, and other documents, the McKissacks invite young readers to celebrate coming freedom and the Days of Jubilee.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Non-Fiction Book.......2007-08-15
This is one of the best non-fiction books that I have ever read. It gives a clear and thoughtful description of the details leading up to the Civil War and immediately after. I wish that I had this book when I was in school. I never liked history because it seemed like I was memorizing arbitrary dates and Amendments. If my history books had been written this well, it would have all made sense. This is a wonderful book for anyone's library.
The Truth about the End of Slavery.......2003-10-18
While the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation is often thought of as the end of slavery in the United States, the truth is that slaves were freed at different times over the course of several years. The day that slaves were told of their freedom was called their day of Jubilee.
Starting with information related to blacks' roles during the American Revolution and working chronologically through December of 1865, this book presents the story of the end of slavery as seen through the eyes of so many concerned parties. The narratives of slaves are abundant, but the diary entries, narratives, and letters of Union soldiers, Confederate soldiers, mothers, fathers, generals, presidents, politicians' wives and newspaper reporters are all included.
The major battles of the Civil War and explanations of war strategies are discussed in fascinating detail. (Honestly--This is the first time I've ever enjoyed learning about a war.) Generals Grant and Lee are both given a voice, and the story of the assassination of the President is told in stunning specificity. Readers will learn about the formation of the Ku Klux Klan, of blacks' insistence in fighting for the cause in which they believed, and what happened unexpectedly to slaves immediately following their release from slavery.
In elementary school, students often learn about the Civil War in terms of the loving, kind Abraham Lincoln and the open-minded Union Army that paraded into the South to save the slaves from their terrible lives. This book, mainly because of its inclusion of primary document information, provides a more honest and yet even more so captivating story of what really happened in those five years while slavery was coming to an end.
Readers will attach to many of the characters in this book, including the senator's wife Mary Chestnut who writes of her fears of losing the war and her slaves, and Elizabeth Keckley, and African American woman who became the seamstress to Mrs. Lincoln.
The black/white and sepia photos of the men, women, events, and surroundings of the 1800's greatly enhance the story.
This book is truly stunning and includes great, detailed information in a writing style that appeals to the young reader.
Interesting.......2003-08-18
This was a fascinating and thought provoking look at the end of American slavery. You will learn many things about the civil war, some about the Underground Railroad, and some about the conflicting politics of the north and south, Abraham Lincoln, his allies and enemies. It is filled with narratives from slaves, diary entries from prominent white politicians and abolitionists and accounts of African American contributions in many Civil War battles.
I don't normally read non-fiction for fun, but this was a worthwhile read, and we can still learn many lessons about tolerance and attitudes about racism today.
Book Description
"This is a book about the most dramatic day in the history of the world, the day on which Jesus of Nazareth died. It opens at 6 P.M.—the beginning of the Hebrew day—with Jesus and ten of the apostles coming through the pass between the Mount of Olives and the Mount of Offense en route to Jerusalem and the Last Supper. It closes at 4 P.M. the following afternoon, when Jesus was taken down from the cross. . . . The fundamental research was done a long time ago by four fine journalists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The rest has been added in bits and pieces from many men whose names span the centuries."—from the Foreword
Customer Reviews:
A Historical Novel.......2007-09-10
Using the accounts of the four Gospels and other texts written at the time of Christ, the author writes about the last day of Jesus Christ. He starts at the beginning of the Hebrew Day at 6 P.M. with Jesus and ten of the apostles coming through the pass between the Mount of Olives and the Mount of Offense en route to Jerusalem and the Last Supper. And we follow an hour-by-hour narrative of this day until it ends at 4 P.M. the following afternoon, when Jesus was taken down from the cross.
The book also has three chapters that give us the historical context in which to understand the words and actions of those involved that day. The chapters cover a background on Jesus Christ himself, and on Roman and Palestinian life and history.
The narrative style of the book is very engaging and gives us a view of that day as Mel Gibson tried to do in his movie 'The Passion of the Christ'. And Jim Bishop as able to give you great insight about the deeper history of the reasons and actions regarding Christ's last day, as he understands it.
"You Are There....".......2007-04-01
Remember the old fifties TV show, "You Are There" which recreated as accurately as possible the great moments in history as if they were happening as you watched? "You are there..."
That's what this book is...a recreation, as historically accurate as possible, of Jesus' last day on earth as a human with scripture interwoven into the events of the day as it happened and as it went along. At times moving, very moving...
Fundamentalists looking for aura and glory will not find it here. Instead, readers will find a carefully written account of life in the Palestine of that day and, as carefully as can be researched, the reactions, thoughts, hopes, fears and dreams of the the Apostles, Priests and Roman officers as they lived that day, not knowing what it was, where it would lead or what it was all about. A very, very, very good effort.
While there is no groundbreaking theology here--there was never intended to be any--the reader can learn a lot about ancient Palestine and come to a greater and deeper understanding and appreciation of life in Jesus' time...For example, few would know or imagine that the Jews were doing brain surgery in this time, removing cataracts, too. False teeth and dental work were common. It was all part of Jesus' world, a world we never think about or comprehend.
What we learn about his world alone is worth the read. And for Christians, it adds a richness and fullness to the age-old story.
A Great Read.......2007-01-18
This was quite a good book. Although I'm not particularly religious, it was full of interesting facts about Christ's final hours. It was refreshing to read about Him as a "man" as well as the saviour. Jim Bishop gives a great insight about the deeper history of the reasons and actions regarding Christ's last day. This book brought to me a greater understanding of what I had been taught as a child in terms that I could relate to on a human level.
excellent book!.......2006-02-09
This is a wonderful book about Jesus. Although the title implies that you will only read about his last day on earth, you will actually read about much more than that. There is one section that skips clear back to the day he was born and other sections that cover other times in his life. There are sections that give descriptions of the geographical area, the lifestyle of the people, the rulers and the religious leaders of the time, and much more. All descriptions are factual and very interesting. Only recently I discovered that this book has a description of the scourge that is very similar to the scourge as depicted in the movie "The Passion". Bear in mind this book was written nearly 50 years ago, so it is not "copied" from the movie.
Interesting and Informative.......2005-03-07
'The Day Christ Died' tells the story of the 24 hours leading up to the death of Jesus Christ.
It takes the familiar story from the Gospels and adds details from everyday life of the time. There are chapters on the Jewish and Roman worlds of the time that further add insight.
This book is similar to Mel Gibson's movie 'The Passion of the Christ' in the way that it focuses things on the last day. There is also a lengthy chapter entitled 'Jesus' which tells much of the story of His earlier life.
It is very good at helping to explain the background and cultures of the times. For instance, it adds lots of insight into the political maneuverings of Annas and Caiphas and the way their positions interacted with the Roman authorities.
This is a quick read packed with lots of information. It is very worthwhile.

Terrific.......2007-01-18
For such a small book, it was jam packed with great information. This account of Christ's birth made Mary & Joseph's saga "real" to me. As I read the accounting of the time, I could see the occurances in my mind clearly and could truely imagine what they must have been feeling during that period of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the story of Christ.
An New Appreciation for Mary and Joseph as People.......2005-12-23
When it was first written in 1959, this book was subtitled "A Reverential Recreation," and it is a very good one, an outstanding piece of work that gives the reader a new appreciation for the human dimensions of the Christmas story. Bishop's detailed research and captivating writing style make this book an engaging read, giving the reader a greater feel and appreciation for Mary (she was only 14 or 15 at the time)and Joseph (He, too, was much younger than you might think, about 18 or 19), of what their life was like, of the family ties between Jesus and John the Baptist, of what countryside was like on the 90-mile trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem, of Bethlehem's proxmity to Jerusalem and its impact on the story...Reads like the the old "You Are There" TV series, and it is good, very good. Well done and highly recommended. Perhaps the next best thing to being there...
An interesting read.......2004-10-18
The Day Christ was Born is an excellent work of fiction describing the life of Christ. The book actually covers more than just the day of Jesus' birth, giving attention to the circumstances surrounding that important event, such as Mary's pregnancy, the trip to Bethlehem, the visit of the shepherds and the Magi, and the trip to Egypt.
Bishop takes a few liberties in his interpretation of the biblical story, but maintains the crucial elements in his narrative. He explains some of the customs of the day, including those of marriage and the process of giving birth.
With only two of the four gospels giving any details about the birth of Jesus, Bishop has attempted to supply the missing details, weaving in material from various ancient historical and archeological sources. He doesn't tamper with the facts, but merely enhances them with a creative dialogue and description that makes the book an enjoyable read.
