Dr. Friedrich Merkel first identified the Merkel cells, which he called Tastzellen (touch cells) in 1875. However, it was not until the 1960s that the existence of Merkel cells in the human skin was confirmed by Dr. Cauna using electron microscopy.
1902 saw the discovery of the Haarscheiben (hair discs) by Dr. Felix Pinkus who reported that they are many Merkel cells beneath the epidermis of the disc. Today, the Merkel cell-neurite complex in the hair disc is regarded as a slow-adapting type I mechanoreceptor unit.
Since 1978, when Drs. Tang and Toker reported the concept of Merkel cell carcinoma, many cases have been identified worldwide. Neurobiology, neuropeptides and interaction between cutaneous innervation and the

Customer Reviews:
Mediocre Travel Guide.......2007-06-04
I have owned several editions of the Lonely Planet Guide for the Philippines since 1997. The earlier editions I owned were written by Jens Peters. I believe that those earlier editions were even superior to the 2006 edition written by the current authors. I used those past guides for traveling in Boracay and Baguio--I found them to be excellent even if they were written years after I visited the place.
I had the chance to browse Jens Peters Philippines Travel Guide written in 2005 and I found it much better. However, I could only find a browser's copy of the book which was pretty beaten up.
I purchased this LP Guide because I wanted to visit Puerto Galera. However, its Puerto Galera section is terribly inaccurate because the phone numbers for the resorts have changed a lot. Out of 4 numbers I called, only 1 was correct. Now how's that for a travel guide supposed to be published only 1 year ago?
This current guide does not compare with the depth that the Jens Peters guide explores the country. It has lost some of the distinguishing features that LP guides have. Typical LP guides have segmentation of Places to Stay from the low end to the high end. It's missing in this guide. I find it very much of a let down because this book costs a lot in the Philippines (PhP1,299=US$28.26)
The usual good book.......2007-05-13
Lonely Planet is a known quantity but I am impressed with the information on so many of the 1107 islands of The Philippines. Truly a good guide.
Not very impressed.......2007-02-19
Many errors and omissions in ferry and flight schedules. We also noted the map in one of the major tourist destinations (Coron) did not even show the pier location correctly. All in all, a useful guide. But you may want to check out the guide written by the first LP Philippines author, Jens Peters, Philippines Travel Guide, which we have heard may be better. It's also available on Amazon.
Informative especially for the young.......2007-01-21
Excellent information, good pictures, terrible maps (the tones are too similar in color - can't tell water from land). Great book for the young, party-oriented traveller.
Good guidebook, but needs (already) an update!.......2006-12-13
I am just returning from a 3 week journey thru the Philippines, during which I have used this guidebook intensively. In my opinion this is the best guidebook available for all independent travelers. The Rough Guide for instance has less practical information.
However, I was a bit disappointed about the level of detail. For example for Palawan, many descriptions are rather pointers and leave a lot of room for further exploration. Other information needs an urgent update (regarding prices, quality of service, better hotels for less are available... ).
For instance for the town of Sagada: one burial cave with hanging coffins is only accessible with a guide, since the access is locked; on one recommended hike up to a mountain top "with beautiful views", there is no watch tower anylonger since a long time...
This is astonishing, since the latest version has been published in 2006!

Good advice.......2007-05-28
If there's one thing the Philippines has in abundance, it's water and diving. I picked this guide up to help narrow my selections down, since the amount of spots to go to is simply overwhelming. It helped narrow things down a bit, and from there you head to the divemasters and started hitting the spots one at a time. This book will definitely save you time.
Diving in the Philippines, Details!.......2007-05-02
This book is wonderful. It educates the diver with degree of skill, pros and cons of each site, photos as applicable, and maps. It's a well rounded, informative guide and I recommend it. The maps are not as they could be, but thats why you go out with a group and dive master.
Nice concise guide.......2006-09-20
This book was well laid out and an easy and interesting read. It covers all the main diving areas throughout the Philippines. It gives a brief description of the terrain, difficulty, what you will see and the general conditions you will experience on diving to each location. It also gives tips on traveling to each location, though this could be a little more thorough, due to the difficulty of getting to each site. This book is great if you are planning a dive trip and have no idea which areas to head to. It allowed me to pick certain areas and islands to research further on the internet. It will be a great resource to take to each dive shop when deciding which dives to participate in.
Lacks map of fish. .......2005-09-23
Very good and contains a lot af info. Lacks a map of fish.
It would be nice to have pictures of the fish you are going to see.
The best Diving Guide to the Philippines.......2003-02-14
Well written guide with alot of information and contacts for dive locations throughout the Philippines, well worth the price even if just snokeling. Covers Malapascua in northern Cebu, Southern Leyte, best diving around, and Camiguin plus all the well known sites. Alot of good maps.

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.
If you're off to the Philippines, pack along this handy guide to help you plan the journey that's right for you. The Lonely Planet's Philippines offers 143 maps, a special guide to inter-island travel, listings of places to stay (ranging from huts to suites that include butler service), a useful language section, practical details on outdoor activities, plus interesting background on flora, fauna, and culture, A special health section covers predeparture preparations as well as potential medical problems and treatment on the road. --Kathryn True

just travel...............2001-10-22
lotsa interesting places jens has visited........even met some of the people that contributed info. on far off treks.....i think a guide book would be a great help to new travellers.!..
Good guide, but out-of-date.......2000-12-27
As always, Lonely Planet provides excellent and thorough travel information and travel tips. But all such information is extremely time-sensitive. With this guide published in 1997, which contains advice dating back to 1996 or so, we are far out of date ! Advice is great and complete, but much of it is out-dated. The Philippines have changed a lot in the last four years. Prices quoted in the guide make no sense any more. Historical and political information also need a great deal of revision. All in all, on this occasion you may be better off getting one of the other guides (until - of course - LP publish a newer edition of this one).
Seriously out of date!.......2000-08-24
The Lonely Planet series is excellent and you can never go too wrong with it. Unfortunately, the Phillippines guide book written by Jens Peters is seriously out of date. This book was published in 1997 when the political and economic situation in the Phillippines were radically different. Since the Asian economic crisis, the Piso is now worth half as much as it was in 1997 but the unsuspecting reader will not know this. The political situation is such places as Mindinao has also deteriated considerably and poses a danger to tourists.
Peters provides this book with a wealth of information and it certainly isn't his fault that Lonely Planet has lapsed in updating it. I advise travelers to verify the information in this book with friends and sources on the Internet. I also hope that LP updates this book as soon as possible.
informative but outdated.......2000-04-27
Jans Peters wrote a very informative book published in 1993. Since then, two editions have been released with no changes in the sections I have first hand knowledge of. (southern Cebu) A hotel that went out of buisness in 1993 is still reccommended and the many places that have opened up since then have not been added. It is obvious that since the death of Jans no one at lonely planet has bothered to update this(formerly) excellent guidebook. What a shame Lonely Planet keeps republishing it without updates.
Needs improvement.......1999-11-30
LP Philippines contains very informative data for travellers. But what it lacks poorly in is the author's opinion for the places which would help the traveller in deciding how to map out the itinerary.
