Nearly Always Reliable.......2007-01-13
I've always liked Frommer's, mainly because the books are well-organized and provide a great overview and starting point. The attractions are clearly explained, with hours, admission fees, restrictions, & considerations. The hotel suggestions are generally good, though usually a little on the more expensive end, and in lieu of internet I find them generally reliable.
It can be a little dry and a little mainstream, but their books are usually updated with good regularity & is good for planning your sightseeing and transportation. More detailed information on ferries & hydrofoils (not just from Frommers but guide books in general) would be nice!

Despite their reputation, this volume didn't do the trick..........2005-02-11
I'm in the advanced planning stages for my trip to Northern Italy and I was hoping this edition would provide useful information and insight for me. Unfortunately, for all its listings, this book is remarkable in its LACK of detail. It might come in somewhat handy once you're ON the trip, but does little to help you prepare for it.
Also, in trying to cover such vast regions of the area, the individual cities and villages are under reported.

This is a beautiful, detailed collection of illustrations from vintage children's periodicals. I loved the seasonal decorations. There is even one for May day! These pictures are perfect for illustrating memory albums. Lots of fairy pictures, the entire book has a magical quality!

A striking classic collection.......2000-04-13
Many of these illustrations have a "fairy tale" feel to them. It is comparable to "1,100 Designs and Motifs from Historic Sources" but with more of a modern, and sometimes art neuvou look. It has a beautiful astrological sun signs illustrations. Many of the pictures seem to be depictions of Goddesses. Much of the art is useful for Pagan publications. A good variation of styles.

Illuminated Borders In Full Color from Dover Pictorial Archives.......2006-03-12
Wonderful source for illumination ideas. Beautiful coloring of the plates, and very clear images. The only problem I had with this book was the very high gloss of the pages. It made it difficult to use for picture reference since you had to hold it at an odd angle to remove the glare from any lights. Otherwise, this book is well worth the money paid. The Dover Series have easily become my favorite source for needlework, illumination, painting, and artwork ideas.

The book is lovely to look at, but who goes around buying books JUST to look at the pictures? The borders are vibrant and catch your eye with their originality and style but what can you really do with them? The sides are extremely uneven leaving no real way to fix and "pixel-push" into a usable piece of artwork. There is no hope for this book when dealing with graphical design. You should save your money for something better.
Some good news... Some bad news..........1999-11-27
The borders of this book are beautiful, hence three stars - there's no doubt about that. However, it's very hard to find uses for them. Some are actually extremely larger on one side than the other, so, if using the entire thing was ever your plan - you're pretty much out of luck. The difference in side sizes are obviously intentional - but bad. I do not recommend this book to anyone looking to use it for web designs.
an excellent sourcebook for graphic artists.......1999-02-01
A wonderful sourcebook of Victorian border designs. The colors are vibrant and scan well, although there is some ghosting from images on the reverse of the page. Many of the designs can be made fully tileable with a little pixel pushing. The copyright allows use of up to 10 images per project. I am extremely pleased with this purchase!
