4 out of 5 stars A good guide, but needs a few more data points.......2007-08-28

We've used this guide for the entire Northern California section, and haven't gotten lost. The only problem is that some of the jeep roads mentioned in the guide are now invisible, at least to our aging eyes, and also, some of the data points indicate zero elevation change, when there might be a 1000 ft up or down between the points. Add a few more data points, please.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly updated edition of excellent book.......2003-11-08

The earlier editions of this book were one of the best mapping job ever to be found in a trail guide for the West. However, this new edition seems not to have been field-checked. In my neck of the woods (Lassen National Forest) re-routes made a few years ago are left out of the new edition. Specifically, the re-route in Chips Creek is missing. Also, the new view point on Hat Creek Rim is missing, although the old dirt trail was converted to a paved sidewalk for 100 yards. New 1:24,000 maps have been published by the USGS, but Wilderness Press still uses the old 1:62,000 maps in Chips Creek and other places. The earlier editions were nearly flawless, but this effort is Wilderness Press resting on its laurels and re-issuing old material with a new cover.

    Book Description

The fateful kick of Mrs. O'Leary's cow, the wild flight before the flames, the astonishingly quick rebuilding—these are the well-known stories of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. But as much as Chicago's recovery from disaster was a remarkable civic achievement, the Great Fire is also the story of a city's people divided and at odds. This is the story that Karen Sawislak tells so revealingly in this book.

In a detailed account, drawn on memoirs, private correspondences, and other documents, Sawislak chronicles years of widespread, sometimes bitter, social and political conflict in the fire's wake, from fights over relief soup kitchens to cries against profiteering and marches on city hall by workers burned out of their homes. She shows how through the years of rebuilding the people of Chicago struggled to define civic order—and the role that "good citizens" would play within it. As they rebuilt, she writes, Chicagoans confronted hard questions about charity and social welfare, work and labor relations, morality, and the limits of state power. Their debates in turn exposed the array of values and interests that different class, ethnic, and religious groups brought to these public discussions.

"Sawislak combines the copious detail of a historian with the vivid portrayals of a storyteller in her investigation of the infamous Chicago fire. . . . Highlighted by historical maps, plates and engravings, with an epilogue and notes, Smoldering City presents an extremely thorough and engaging study of this extraordinary disaster."—Publishers Weekly

      Book Description

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Haymarket bombing of 1886, and the making and unmaking of the model town of Pullman—these remarkable events in what many considered the quintessential American city forced people across the country to confront the disorder that seemed inevitably to accompany urban growth and social change. In this book, Carl Smith explores the imaginative dimensions of these events as he traces the evolution of beliefs that increasingly linked city, disorder, and social reality in the minds of Americans. Studying a remarkable range of writings and illustrations, as well as protests, public gatherings, trials, hearings, and urban reform and construction efforts, Smith argues that these three events—and the public awareness of the them—not only informed one another, but collectively shaped how Americans saw, and continue to see, the city.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Fire Review.......2006-04-16

In the book The Great Fire the author gives you a lot of amazing facts, pictures, and he lets you see what is going through four main character's eyes. One of the amazing facts this book gives you is that the people who told the fire engines what place to go, miscalculated it three times, and sent the fire engines in wrong directions. One of the great pictures they give you is a lady on postcard posing as Catherine O'Leary milking the cow that started the fire. This book is a great book for young readers like me. I give The Great Fire by Jim Murphy two thumbs up.

3 out of 5 stars The Great Fire book review.......2006-04-09

I thought that the book, The Great Fire, was good in some ways, and bad in other ways. Some of the bad things were that it was really hard to follow. I thought that it was hard to follow because there were many different story lines going on at the same time, and they switched them around to quickly. I also think that the book was boring because it was basically just about people running from the fire and losing their families. I thought that all of the stories about what happened to people during the fire were basically all the same. Some of the good things about the book were that it was full of facts about the fire. It also told the real story about what happened to people during the fire, what caused the fire, and what helped to stop it. Overall I thought that the book was kind of interesting but hard to follow, and that it was boring, but factual. I didn't think that this was the best book I have ever read, but it wasn't the worst either.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Fire.......2005-05-04

This book is a very interesting book about the fire in Chicago in 1871. It is a journal type book because of its look and feel. It is quick reading because it is such a fascinating tragedy. This book has wonderful photographs and has four peoples points of view and commentaries throughout the book. There is actually a mix of photographs, maps and drawings. They work to enhance the book dramatically and give it a more personal and real touch. It is a Newbery Honor book and is definitely worthy of that title.
This book interested me because I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, Naperville, all during my elementary and Jr. High school years. We were taught about this fire every year for school and Girl Scouts and pretty much everything else I was involved with. In fact there is a song about it that is very catchy and teaches about the fire and has hand movements and the works. Now that I am older and I haven't lived there for a long time it is interesting to go back and refresh my memory about this event and see it from a different perspective.
Jim Murphy has also written many books in a similar fashion including books about the Yellow Fever and Alamo.

5 out of 5 stars The Review of a FIRE!!.......2005-04-15

The Great Fire by Jim Murphy is an expansive look into the fire that destroyed Chicago. It is as enthralling as it is amusing and it's a good read for all levels.

Through a compilation of different people this story unfolds colorfully. This book is based around real accounts of a variety of people. One of the most interesting people of the book is the news reporter, because all of his facts are blatantly wrong. These facts would later be the view of the majority of critics.

Uncovered facts, which were unknown at the time of the fire, make the book sometimes funny. One of the funniest things about the book is that the fire could've been stopped in several instances, but because of human ignorance it was allowed to grow. Also the fact that most of the firefighters had been fighting fires for two days straight didn't help the situation.

This is a must read book for anyone no matter what your special interest are. Jim Murphy does a great job of arranging many people's stories to create a strong picture of The Great Fire.

4 out of 5 stars The Great Fire.......2005-01-10

The book "The Great Fire" tells you about terrors, events, burned buildings and more. If you're someone who likes to know what has happened in the late 1800s you will find this book interesting. In the book, there are people who have been interviewed and tell what happened to them during the fire. Three people will tell actual stories about their experiences starting near the first quarter of the book. Throughout this story pictures are shown of paintings from the fire and maps of an overview of Chicago, showing building areas and where the fire had spread. This book is a fun and easy read about history.

2 out of 5 stars But what about the Chicago Fire?.......2001-03-06

If you're looking for a solid, factual, textbook-style, book on the Chicago fire, this work probably isn't for you. With chapter titles such as "Reluctant Modernism, The Past a Present", "Derrick Time, Architecture, Memory and the Poetics of Ruin" and "Wright's Piano,Imagining the New Chicago", this book deals with the authors opinion of the societal and intellectual effects of the fire. For example, "...Chicagoans... indulged the apocalyptic rhetoric occasioned by the fire and to an extent were even flattered by it,...reluctant modernists who would gladly face the present as long as it was safely anchored in the past." (page 57, paragragh 1) The good point about this book is that it is filled with pre and post fire pictures of Chicago. That's the only reason for the two stars.

          5 out of 5 stars Oddly ignored.......2005-08-21

It's strange this book doesn't get more attention. The author has compiled an astonishing amount of evidence, some corroborated recently by an astronomer who was trying to figure out the whereabouts of a fragment that broke away from a comet, indicating that this fragment broke up in the atmosphere over the Great Lakes some years ago and not only triggered and aided the Chicago fire but started a few other major fires in the region that night. Bluntly, if the author ISN'T right there's still plenty of eyewitness reporting from all the fires and testimony from Chicago firefighters that just doesn't jibe with a normal set of fires. Something very weird happened.

For a dopey seeming little book sitting on the fringes of Amazonland the implications of all this are tremendous. Impacts are not the only possible problem; tons of methane (without any impact)can just suddenly drop down from the sky smothering many (one town had multiple deaths not caused by fire or smoke inhalation) and causing fires that are nearly impossible to control--as if we don't have enough to worry about anyway!

I just have to add that if you don't want to pay 9 bucks for this little book you can look at alternatives listed here and get it from the UK for twice the amount or "delivered by courier" for nearly four times what Amazon's asking (?!)

3 out of 5 stars Love Among The Ruins of Chicago........2005-04-28

This was an inspiring novel written for a special project to introduce young people to history. Others in the series include HINDENBERG, 1937, SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE, 1906, WASHINGTON AVALANCHE, 1910. This writer has out a series called DAUGHTERS OF LIBERTY, which looks interesting.

This one concerns a young 18-yr.old girl who ventured to Chicago after her family was killed in the Civil War in Georgia. She takes on a disguise of a boy and acts in a small theater, sort like the Black Box Theater here where Actors Co-op and Word Players learn their craft.

She meets a young minister on a street corner who persuades her to help him create a shelter for the destitute called the Homeplace. When he discovers that young William is indeed Ms. Katina, a fierce fire breaks out in Chicago and engulfs the city rapidly. The only thing to survive that fire was the Water Tower on the North Side and it is still standing. I have seen it. I have been to Chicago where my son attended University of Chicago from freshman to Ph.D (a total of ten years).

She had been rescued but jumps overboard there at the Randolph Street Bridge right downtown and swims five feet to shore where she finds her way back to the Homeplace where she knows that Russell Cosgrove will find her. This may have been made into a PBS movie, but I have not seen it. It is a cute romance and the fire is exciting, as history does indeed sometimes make sense.

Ms. Massie is not a historian, nor does she claim to be. She even admits that she has never been to Chicago, but suggests as reading background the books, THE GREAT FIRE by Jim Murphy and CHICAGO: GROWTH OF A METROPOLIS by H. M. Mayer and R. C. Wade.

This is a great series and has the purpose in the right place.

3 out of 5 stars just like any other historical romance..........2003-02-11

this book was not quite what i imagined it to be. the plot fits into your stereotypical historical romance: girl dresses up as guy, meets cute guy, falls in love with guy, and decides to reveal her 'true self' to him. guy decides he loves her, competes for her affection, assumes that girl likes the other guy better, "oh break, my heart" blah blah. in the end, the girl and guy get together after going through a historical disaster. i'll give this to ms. massie -- the event is described in great detail and is given a lot of attention, which is good if you like that kind of thing. the romance definitely needs more spark [for lack of a better word.]

              5 out of 5 stars A Blazing Story.......2002-10-11

I have read this story over and over again and still love it the same way as the first time. It is about a young girl who disguises herself as a boy to make it on her own when she meets the man she falls in love with. Of course this plot has been used over and over, but it is still a really fun read. The heroine is really convincing and a great role model. She changes her identity to keep her dreams alive, yet never lost sight of her dreams, and even created some new ones! This was a blazing story full of action, history, and romance, three things I love in a good book. I highly recommend this book and others of the series.

5 out of 5 stars A Tale of Burning Love!.......2002-04-09

I have read the Chicago Fire and the San Fransico Earthquake. I loved them both. the Chicago Fire is a wonderful book with a good plot and wonderful characters. The supense is great as the book travels from one character to another. It is a great book for any one who likes Historical Fiction. I loved the sensational ending! If you love histroy and romance you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars You Can't Put it Down!.......2001-08-16

What a book! Being a lover of romance, this book... "Hit the Spot" Comparing it to the other books like it in the "Series" that I've read, San Fransisco Earthquake, Pearl Harbor (the newest), and Hindenburg, it wasn't as suspensful, but I couldn't put it down. A definite happy ending!
