This Helped Us Alot to Identify the Snake we saw.......2006-11-07
Thanks to this book, we are able to see which snakes help around the farm and which ones we needed to get rid of.
It has great color pictures, but wished they had more.
I would recommend this book to anyone that lives in North East TX..

Great Maps, oh but thats it........2006-07-10
The maps in this book are of exceptional detail narrowing ranges down to countys which is hard to get in many smaller field guides. However this is about the extent of this books worth. Although the pictures are descent they are by no means fantastic or worth writing home about and there are not very many of each animal, usually just one example, which any herper knows is not enough. My suggestion get Tennants Lone Star Field Guide to Texas Snakes thats a far better read.
Great Guide!.......2006-04-29
This is a great guide - we are currently moving from Northwest Arkansas to Liberty County, Texas, and this guide will be very helpful in helping us to identify snakes we are not used to, and helping our four children to know which snakes are bad snakes. The pictures are beautiful, and I like that under most pictures, there is a label identifying where the snake was found (some poisonous in Liberty and Polk Counties!!!).
The only thing we do not like about the guide is that it isn't divided into regions of Texas - Texas is a huge state and it would be easier to look up a snake quickly if it were divided into regions of Texas rather than families of snakes. The poisonous snakes do have their own section, though, which is good. There is also good information about snakes in the front of the book. The descriptions of each snake are very thorough and we like reading about the habitats of different snakes.
We hope to find more wildlife guides like this one on Texas snakes.
Texas Snakes: A Field Guide (Texas Natural History Guides).......2006-03-10
This is a must have book for everyone that lives in Texas whether you are into snakes or not. I've refered many to this book just to identify snakes in their yards, and is a must have when hiking or camping. I have an older version that looks like it's been thru the washing machine because I've used it so much. When this newest edition came out, I had to have it, and was pleasantly surpised with a few additions such as current Texas laws and regulations concerning reptiles. It's field guide size makes it perfect to throw into your glove box or backpack to keep handy. It has great pictures, discriptions, and ranges of every single snake in the state of Texas. Buy and enjoy!
Book Description
This field guide deftly describes the 105 species of snakes in Texas, the state with the largest number of different species in the nation. Learn facts about the biology and behavior of these creatures, plus the latest findings on abundance, reproduction, prey, sizes, and habitat. Includes amazingly detailed color photos.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, check used prices.......2006-09-19
I came to this site to buy this book, but after seeing the prices I called a local non-discount book store (the one with Star Bucks in it) and bought it new for $24.95. What's with the inflated prices for a used paperback? Makes no sense to me.
Detailed and Example Pictures.......2005-08-03
Very thorough research, orderly referenced example pictures, and easy to use.
Don't kill 'em all !!.......2005-07-07
We have snakes. Lots of them. But rather than "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out", as my husband prefers, I take this book with me during ourdoor activities and literally look up the snake I'm looking at. The photos are extremely helpful, limited only by my own perceptual problems---for example, Texas brown snakes look like rat snakes look like copperheads to me, even in the pictures. But the majority of the snakes in Texas and in the book do NOT deserve to die...life imprisonment, maybe...this is a very comforting book to own.
Excellent field guide great pictures & information!.......2003-11-15
This field guide on snakes is excellent. The pictures of each snake are clear and you can identify them easily when you see them in the wild (or in you're house). The organization of this book splits up into two sections venomous and nonvenomous which allows a very quick way to tell if you should be anywhere near the snake. The infromation on each type is plentiful and everything you need to know is included. There are maps of where to find each type and whether they are endangered or protected in the state of Texas. A system is given in the beginning of the book for how to easily determine a snake and also what to do if you happen to be bit by a venomous type. The only thing I would like to see in the next revision is the striking distance of each snake which isn't given in this book.
Too bad I can't give this one 6 stars........2002-03-01
A great book. A fantastic book. It's slightly larger than what one might expect for a field guide, but the difference is put to good use. Not only are the excellent photographs printed at such high resolution that you expect to see these scaled beauties slithering off the pages, but the accompanying text is so easy to read that you might find it to be a page-turner that ranks with some pretty good novels. This book is crammed with really useful or, at the very least, interesting info -- like the relative potencies of venoms from different snakes. (You might be surprised...) A detailed discussion of the mechanisms associated with different snake venoms and what might be done to counter them is really fascinating. The text for each species is accompanied by a distribution map; that text includes information on whether the snake in question is venomous, its behavior, reproduction, abundance, size, etc. I can't say enough good stuff about this book. If you live in a state adjacent to Texas and Mr. Tennant hasn't written a book about your snake population, it would well be worth getting this one. He also wrote the "Field Guide to Snakes of Florida," so you guys in Florida are lucky, too! This book made me want to head out at night to the local megapuddles that form near my house south of Houston to see what might be after those little frogs that seem to appear out of nowhere in the spring. Now, that might seem to be a little strange, but if you've read this book, you probably know what I mean.
Come to think of it, I'd like to give this one 7 stars...

Book Description
First published in 1950 by John F. Werler and subsequently revised several times, Poisonous Snakes of Texas has long been the standard guide to these reptiles. This new edition is a totally restructured version of the original. Following changes in first-aid and medical approaches to snakebite, Andrew H. Price, a herpetologist working in natural resource management for Texas Parks and Wildlife, has given these life-saving subjects expanded, "state-of-the-art" coverage. Other sections of the book deal with snakebite statistics, snakebite prevention at home and in the field, and the identification of venomous species. The most significant difference from the original version, however, is in the detailed coverage given to the fifteen kinds of poisonous snakes native to Texas. The physical appearance of each species is carefully described, together with its habitat, behavior, reproduction, food habits, and venom characteristics. Each snake description is accompanied by a county-by-county distribution map and a beautiful full-color photograph. Additionally, black-and-white illustrations highlight information throughout the text.

Comments on Poisonous Snakes of Texas.......2000-06-11
A good book and easy to use. Two corrections: The correct spelling for the common name of Sistrurus miliarius is Pigmy Rattlesnake (not Pygmy), and it is the Texas Coral Snake that is found in Texas, not the Harlequin Coral Snake. Pigmy Rattlesnake and Texas Coral Snake are standardized common names that have been in use nationwide since 1978.

Good reference.......1999-04-02
I use this book at work all the time (state fish and wildlife agency) -- it's quite helpful to both the interested layperson and the professional. Nice, clear photographs, good "thumbnail" maps, and just enough information to be interesting. If you are interested in snakes, please refer to the "companion" in the series, _A Field Guide to Texas Snakes_ by Alan Tennant (recently reprinted).

Customer Reviews:
This book is by far the WORST Frommers publication.......2006-08-15
I always use Frommers books for my vacations, but I have to tell you that this book is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent on Amazon or any other book store for that matter. The author obviously has not done her job here. Be careful, you just might wind up in Iraq if you follow her guides. This book is very vague and confusing throughout. You can not trust her hotel recommendations. How in the world can she justify putting Apricot hotel in Istanbul in this book. This guy is a crook. This hotel should be taken out of this book completely for it's opportunistic behavior. Have you ever heard the phrase BAIT AND SWITCH? BUYER BEWARE? Well, that should be the heading for all her recommendations if they are all like the Apricot hotel in Istanbul. My advise to the author, have a chat with the guy who wrote the Frommers Italy book, you can learn alot from him.
a little out of date.......2006-08-09
Things have changed in Turkey. The currency has been modernized and preparation for membership in the EU changes other things as well. The book is still dealing with the old currency and you must convert everything. Hotel ratings, restaurants as always need to be checked against standards where they exist. It is not enough to say first class or three star. The historical venues and the directions, advice on what to see probably very valid. Need to get guide that includes the New Turkish Lira.
An Indispensable Guide.......2005-07-06
Our battered and dogeared copy of the Frommer's Turkey guide was an indispensible guide on our trip to Turkey. We are independent travelers who like to get out on our own, away from tours, and this guide was perfect for our needs. We used it to plan our trip, modifying Ms. Levine's suggested 2-week itinerary to match our needs. The guide also provided us with plenty of off the beaten path suggestions of where to stay and eat. We found the reviews of accommodations and restaurants particularly accurate in terms of quality, though would have liked to see a few more restaurant recommendations -- this is one area, I think, where Frommers guides in general feel a bit thin. The book also has lots of historical and cultural information and "surivival tips" that made for good reading (and re-reading) during long airport waits and on downtime -- I found myself reading this book more often than the novel I brought along. This guide also works well in conjunction with the Eyewitness or Insight guides (we have found this for other locations too), as the latter seem to provide better at-a-glance cultural information and have superior maps. Yes, prices were more than what were listed in the book, but this is not the author's fault. In any case, after a couple of days in Turkey we could get a sense of "budget," "moderate," and "expensive" prices and estimate these categories in the guidebook accordingly.
I am impressed by how much ground is covered in this guide. We appreciated the attention given to some places and experiences that we didn't find mentioned in other guidebooks to Turkey. Traveling distances and times seemed entirely accurate, and they helped us to budget our time efficiently.
perhaps the worst Frommer's guide to date.......2003-05-23
Don't look for travel advice here.
Lots of elitist opinions on Turkey's history and the growth of tourism there over the past twenty years. O tempore o mores !
oi veh !
A glance at the "best beaches" will give the reader a quick lesson in obfuscation and double talk. While bemoaning the fact that most of the best beaches have been "snatched up by big hotel chains" and access is not free, the author manages to compile a less than worthy list of nine beaches. And on that list are harbours and beaches which have been "snatched up" by the big hotel chains( read hotel chains as the bad guys!) Quality of sand and water temperature are virtually ignored. When and where you can enjoy the best swimming is not even mentioned. Ms. Levine has time for some great advice on behalf of the turtles and the reader is advised to stay away from "off- limits" protected areas ! No kidding !
All this before you get to page 10.
It gets worse. Check the "Where to Stays" and be prepared for listing after listing of over-priced cookie cutter hotels and resorts. Its difficult to make Turkey into Velveeta Cheese but this Frommer's did it !
Ed von Lemcke
Turkish trip planner recommends Frommer's Guide to Turkey.......2002-11-13
As a yacht charter broker and trip planner specializing in Turkey, my clients often ask me to suggest a guidebook for Turkey. I have begun recommending The Frommer's Guide to Turkey because it is filled with fresh insights and practical information. I have had very positive comments from customers who have purchased it.
Ms. Levine's work is clearly the result of thorough, in-person research. She is a dedicated "good traveler," who has made the effort to understand the subtleties of the Turkish culture. Her discussions on a number of commonly asked questions, such as the merits of driving on your own in Turkey, rug shopping, and bargaining were right on target. She writes with wit and a sense of fun!
Overall, Frommer's Turkey Guide is superior to other guidebooks on the market, and I will continue recommending it to our customers.
Best wishes,
Patricia Goksel

. Young Matt is alone in the Maine wilderness awaiting his father's return to their cabin when he is attacked by a swarm of bees. To his surprise, he is saved by an Indian chief and his grandson, Attean. The boys come to know each other, many months pass without a sign of Matt's family. Then Attean asks Matt to join the Beaver tribe. Should Matt abandon his hopes for his father's return and join his new family up north? Paperback.
Amazon.com
When his father returns East to collect the rest of the family, 13-year-old Matt is left alone to guard his family's newly built homestead. One day, Matt is brutally stung when he robs a bee tree for honey. He returns to consciousness to discover that his many stings have been treated by an old Native American and his grandson. Matt offers his only book as thanks, but the old man instead asks Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Both boys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. In the mornings, Matt tries to entice Attean with tales from Robinson Crusoe, while in the afternoons, Attean teaches Matt about wilderness survival and Native American culture. The boys become friends in spite of themselves, and their inevitable parting is a moving tribute to the ability of shared experience to overcome prejudice. The Sign of the Beaver was a Newbery Honor Book; author Elizabeth Speare has also won the Newbery Medal twice, for The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Bronze Bow. (Ages 12 and older) --Richard Farr
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful story.......2007-09-14
This is a great book about a boy who forms a friendship with and Indian boy named Attean, and in fact with his entire family. I found it a pleasure to read, because it offered a different historical perspective than most books that come from the white man's perspective. While Matt was white, most of the book is filled with his interactions with the Indian people. We get a glimpse of how they lived, and how very practical it was as opposed to the white man's way of life. It was more in tune with the land, for sure.
I'm getting off track, but I was very touched by the story. Matt is essentially invited to join the Beaver tribe by Attean and his grandfather, and Attean calls him his brother. The warm acceptance that grew between the two boys was heartwarming, and toward the end it brought tears to my eyes, but not due to sadness; instead due to the love the two boys shared.
The choice.......2007-06-05
This book is about A boy named Matt who builds a cabin with his father and then his father leaves him alone to pick up the rest of his family. Now Matt is alone and puts marks by every day that passes. Then Matt meets an indian named attean and they become friends. Now Matt is teaching Attean to read and write and Attean is teaching Matt how to survive on his own. then time goes by and his dad never returned so Ateean is asking Matt to head north with the beaver tribe and Matt does not know if he should go with Attean or wait for his father.
Fantasict.......2007-05-30
You will think this book is fantastic because it's really interesting to see how the indians live. The beginning of the book starts out kinda of slow but it starts getting really good after the indians save Matt from the bees.My favorite part of the book is when the indians start to like matt because this is the part of the book when Matt starts to learn how to start hunting and becomes friends with Attan
you will love this book .......2007-04-18
You will love this book because this book is an adventurous book. if you like books that envolve the olden days then you will love this book.you will want to read about what happens when the boy sees the hidden beaver signs and when the boy finds out that the indians saved his life.this book showws what could realy happen
A great childhood book about history.......2007-02-10
This lovely book is a great book to show children tolerance between cultures. It is a study of how one boy sees the Native Americans in a positive light. Matt is able to experience friendship, loyalty, and acceptance. I was touched at how the grandfather showed love towards Matt. Also, Attean's final gift to Matt shows how much he thought of Matt-generosity and sacrifice. It is interesting for its historical perspective too, as the work of the Native American woman was shown in this book!! A highly recommended read.
Product Description
About a 12 yr. old who must try to survive on his own until his father returns. Although, Matt is brave he is not ready for an attack of swarming bees, and he's astonished when he is rescued by an Indian Chief and his grandson, Attean.

The best book ever.by janny.......2007-09-10
Hay listen up now I have a great book you should read it's called The sign of the Beaver. The sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare shows how people can live with Indians and how white man can live with all. To begin, his dad left to go get matt's mom, sister, and little baby. Matt's dad had moved into the woods without them so he had to go back to get them. Next in line, by his own stupidity he got stung badly but some in indans, the chief and his grand son Attean, helped him. They gave him medicine that helped his wounds. Finally Attean and all the Indians leave forever. Matt is left alone. His dad comes back with his mom and sister. I think if you don't read it you'll miss out on the greatness of the book.
"the most intresting book ever".......2007-05-21
We are 5 sixth grade girls and we read this book at school. The book that we read was not intresting. In the beginning it was so BORING, but in chapter 13 it got intresting, but then it got boring again until the end becuase the baby that Matts mom was carrying in her belly died and that was sad. Also when the dad left Matt home in the cabin by himself, also this guy name Ben stole his shot gun when the bear distroyed his food he had no gun to kill the bear with. I give this book one star becuase it was not intresting. BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Penobscot Point of View.......2007-03-30
As a member of the Penobscot Tribe who has lived on Indian Island for 37 years, and a teacher as well, I would recomend this book only if you are teaching sterotypes and non-native perception. One must keep in mind that this book is "Fiction". Unfortunatly, it's perceived and seems to be taught as "Non-fiction" - too bad.
I disagree.......2002-11-29
If I used the sign of the beaver in my classroom I'd get suspended. In fact, an angry Sun reading mob would probably rush round to my house, daub my walls with "PEEDO SCUM" or somesuch, and set fire to my car.
I'd not buy this book.
Sign of the Beaver Classroom Guide.......2000-11-21
I just finished teaching "The Sign of the Beaver" and used this guide along with the reading. This guide is quite helpful. It's broken down in chapter groups and has quizes that are nicely written. My students are currently working on the end of the book projects. They are having a blast. Well written and very easy to use. If your going to teach "The Sign of the Beaver" in your classroom you need this guide before you start!
Great book!!.......1997-09-02
My class has done a novel study of this book every year for the past five years. It goes along really well with our Alabama History chapter on the indians of Alabama. It gives us an almost firsthand "look" at early indian life. It also teaches friendship and is great when doing a multicultural theme

- Vintage toys and tacky taxidermy
- War medals and Easter eggs
- Comic books, quilts and museum artifacts.
The uniquely Canadian products are accompanied by foreign manufactured tourist souvenirs. High art meets low kitsch.
