Book Description
Once domesticated, rabbits are very sociable animals that can be trained, and that get along well with other house pets. This book covers every aspect of house rabbit ownership and care. It includes a nose-to-tail health guide to ensure that the rabbit remains fit and healthy. Books in this handsomely produced series are written especially for new and soon-to-be pet owners. Most volumes, filled with striking color illustrations, give in-depth presentations of the needs and traits of specific dog breeds. Starting this season,Living With a Pet books are expanding to include other animals that have become popular as house pets. Before acquiring a pet, potential buyers need to know: Is the animal good with children? Which dog breeds make good hunters, guard dogs, or farm dogs? Which animals make ideal apartment pets? Each title in this series gives readers a detailed understanding of the animalÂ's daily needs, special abilities, physical traits, temperament, susceptibility to health problems, and the many other details prospective owners need to know before acquiring a pet. All Living With a Pet titles are hardcover editions with jackets, and all have color photos on every two-page spread. Interesting sidebars appear throughout the text.

Customer Reviews:
Hamburger Heaven.......2006-06-10
A little gross, but it's likely that the kids won't mind. Pinky Pig works at Hamburger Heaven, earning money to buy a new clarinet, when she overhears the boss say that she'll have to be let go unless business picks up. Sure that the customers are just bored with the menu, Pinky gathers ideas for new burgers and convinces the chef to make them. Cockroaches and pine needles are among the new condiments customers have to choose from, and business booms!
Nice story told in rhyme, with some disgusting burgers... but the customers like them! The watercolor-like illustrations are okay, nothing special but a few are quite funny. Kids are bound to giggle over stinkbugs and crickets on burgers, and if that's what it takes to keep their interest, then it's worth it.
A fun treat for the family..........2004-04-16
What a fun book to read with your children. The illustrations are wonderful, as is the story itself. My children ask for it over and over again....
It will make you laugh.......2002-11-08
I love this book as much as my children. We first came across it in the library then we had to make it part of our home library. It rhymes all the way through about crazy things. You won't regret getting this book! A++++++++++
A Pig Selling Hamburgers!.......2000-08-09
Hamburger Heaven is a whimsical delight. The characters are inventive and both adults and children will enjoy the 1950s diner setting. The story will definitely make children laugh as well as evoke a few "ew, gross" responses to the funny burgers. This is a great story to read to your kids and one they will probably be excited to learn to read on their own. Very cute!

LIVING WITH PIGS: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Porkers
Chuck Wooster, with photographs by Geoff Hansen
*The definitive guide to raising pigs, whether for pet purposes or pork chops!
Movie star George Clooney prompted thousands of Americans to discover the joys of owning a pot-bellied pig as a house pet. The movie Babe had pigs that were cuter than border collies. Hollywood obviously has discovered what Chuck Wooster already knows: pigs are adorable, clean, and friendly. They are finally getting the respect they deserve, as more and more people are interested in them. Pigs are the fourth most intelligent creatures on the planet, just below humans, primates, and dolphins. They also make for great bacon. Chuck Wooster’s comprehensive guide to all things pig tells readers which breeds are best for which purpose, how to find them, train them, breed them, butcher them, prepare proper food and shelter for them, and much, much more! Wooster writes with a reassuring voice and plenty of entertaining anecdotes to outline how easy it is to take care of a pig. And the gorgeous layout is illustrated with full-color photographs throughout.
In the tradition of Living with Chickens, this is a beautiful book will appeal to “armchair” farmers, hobby farmers, do-it-yourselfers, and animal lovers.
Chuck Wooster raises sheep and pigs and organic vegetables in Vermont, where he is also associate editor of Northern Woodlands magazine. Vermont photographer Geoff Hansen is an editor at New Hampshire’s Valley News, and his photos have appeared in many books and magazines.

Customer Reviews:
Invaluable.......2007-06-27
This book is great. It gives lots of PRACTICAL information, without giving too much information about every single hotel and restaurant in town. It has tips and advice on how to enjoy your trip and not be taken advantage of. It has "heads up" sections that warn you of tourist traps, and gives ways to save money while visiting an expensive state. It highlights the "must-see's", and is a great aid in planning the trip of a lifetime.
Don't rely on this book for Alaska if you want accurate information.......2007-06-16
I run a tour business for Alaska travelers and purchased this book as a reference book. I was horrified at the inaccurate information and lack of details. For expample the author talks about Southeast Alaska and only mentions 3 towns! leaving out some of the most interesting and best places. No mention of Ketchikan, Haines, Wrangell, Petersburg, Gustavus. It is hard to believe the author has ever been to this part of Alaska. And as for his information for cruise ship passengers and day trips - his information and pricing is way out of date and for the most part very inaccurate. If you are planning to visit Alaska by cruise ship - this is NOT the information you will need for going through the Inside Passage.
Great book of non-dummies too........2007-03-20
A great book for a planned trip with limited time. If you are off for adventure or off the beaten path make sure you get the Milepost and if you are visiting the Denali area, get Discovering Denali.
Satisfied Dummie.......2006-02-25
I loved this book. I had ordered three different books on Alaska Vacations, this one was the best hands down. It gave me all my options, sample vacations, told me the best and worst of Alaska. I really feel I can now book my vacation and feel very comfortable. Going to Alaska is a very expensive vacation, I have waited a lifetime for a trip like this so I wanted to make sure of all my options. This book gave you the pros and cons of cruising, driving, renting an RV, railroads. Once I got through I knew exactly what was the best option for myself.
A Great Guide if you don't know where to begin........2005-02-23
This is a great book for anyone who just doesn't know where to start on planning their first trip to Alaska. The book is filled with valuable information from the writer of Frommer's Alaska. Be sure not to get both Alaska for Dummies and the Frommer's Alaska guide because there is a lot of overlap.
Unfortunately, this book is completely void of photographs which is a shame in a state as picturesque as Alaska.
If you are looking at purchasing this book, the second edition is being released on March 14, 2005. I just finished the book so I thought I would put my two cents in about it.
Book Description
San FranciscoÂ's ChinatownÂthe oldest, largest, and most famous Chinese enclave outside of AsiaÂis more than a tourist attraction. Since its birth in the 1850s, Chinatown has also been a residential neighborhood, business community, and cultural center for generations of Chinese Americans. This collection of vintage photographs, taken from public archives and private collections, looks beyond the facade of Chinatown to show the realities of daily life, including a communityÂ's struggle for survival against racial hostility, exclusion laws, two major earthquakes, and urban renewal. The images of ordinary people working, shopping, and socializing in Chinatown, combined with the changing streetscape, historic landmarks, and significant cultural and political events, are organized into three historical periods, providing a panoramic view of community transformation from the gold rush to the present day.
Customer Reviews:
Chinatown - heart of San Francisco.......2006-12-14
Having reviewed the Mid-West cousin book "Chinese in Chicago" last year, I enjoyed the newly published "San Francisco's Chinatown". In cooperation with Chinese Historical Society of America, author Judy Yung presented a well research historical photo album showing the evolution of the oldest, largest and most famous Chinese settlement in America for over one hundred fifty years.
This book composed of four chapters with an introduction. The first chapter "Tong Yun Fow: 1848-1906" highlighted the formation of Chinatown with SF Mayor welcoming the 300 "China Boys" as early as 1850. Chinatown offered early settlers as an extended family for help, protection, jobs, food, shelter, healthcare, spiritual needs and entertainment. Page 12 showed a horse-driven cart of Wing Chun Laundry in contrast to the image of a Chinese laundryman on foot with a pole and two baskets. The city business license charged discriminatory more to walker than to rider. The picture on P.27 was about the Chee Kung Tong, (Chinese Free Masons) which was a major support of Dr. Sun Yat-sen for his revolutionary activities in America. On page 29, there were four men in the picture with three smoking opium. It was British, the opium pushers to Chinese people by waging the Opium War in early 19th Century. The picture in Chapter 2, page 57 recorded Chinatown community leaders worked with federal agents to make a public burning of opium on Washington Street 1914. Racial discrimination and language barrier limited Chinese residential choice. Congress passed the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, based on race, and it prevented Chinese labor immigration for over sixty years. This chapter pictures showed the reality of a bachelor society. Out of the 54 pictures in this chapter, only 9 included women or children. There were smuggles of girls for prostitution to America. Missionary group rescued and aided these poor victims to be productive with a few pictures. This chapter ended with two documentary pictures of 1906 earthquake and fire.
The second chapter chronicled rebuilding Chinatown after the quake and fire for further development up to 1945. The picture on Page 43 showed Grant Avenue looking north in 1910. A picture on page 50 showed Double Ten Parade 1912 celebrating the new Republic with mainly Chinese youths in western suits and ties. This chapter created the impression that Chinese women were not the weaker sex: Page 50 showed a rare photo of Portola Parade 1909 with a Chinese woman warrior Mulan, as a parade marshal on horseback, very significant in a period of racism and discrimination, page 60 showed a young Chinese women on strike for better treatment, p.73 showed a woman radio host and three women musicians 1940s, p.76 showed Rice Bowl Party solicitation for Chinese relief donations with fifty Chinese beauties, p.77 showed a dozen of Chinese women in cap and military uniform to promote war bonds. Of vital importance was the picture on p.79 with China's first lady Madam Chiang Soong Mei-ling stopover at San Francisco on American tour for support against Japanese invasion. It was her impressive, elegant and graceful address to US Congress that won the hearts and minds of Americans to support China as comrade fighters and the repeal of Chinese Exclusion Act. The photo on p.78 showed a group of Chinese young men took their enlistment oath on top of a captured Japanese submarine in Chinatown.
Chapter 3 covered Gilded Ghetto 1945-2000. Chinatown underwent changes. Bathing suit beauty contest in Chinatown started as early as 1948. Page 84 picture was a dedication ceremony honoring the 90 San Francisco Chinese Americans for their ultimate sacrifices in WW II and I, an allegiance to American freedom and democracy. The civil right movement of 1960s inspired the community with many organizations to fight for residents and recent immigrants in childcare, healthcare, language, employment, housing, senior citizen, juvenile delinquency and immigration in the series pictures on p.88 and 99. Chinese Americans were organized in peaceful demonstration to voice their concerns on P.98, 101, 102 and 117. Furthermore, P.111 picture showed two Chinese women helped register voters in American politics in 1977. This process led to great number of Chinese Americans in Federal, State, County and City positions. Chinatown was not only a stop for food but also for services and resources.
The last chapter included a collection of ten photos to summarize today Chinatown. There were a series of pictures: one on senior, one on teenagers, one with three women holding their sons to their bosoms. It was a sharp contrast to the initial Chinatown bachelor society. The Green Street Brass Band on page 121 was a funeral procession tradition. There is a paradigm shift from "falling leaves return to the root" to "falling (seeds) on ground to take root". Gold Mountain is no longer a sojourn place but permanent home now.
Chinatown is the attraction where tourists leave their hearts in the heart of San Francisco. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire reduced Chinatown into ruins and ashes overnight. City Hall agenda of "Chinatown and Chinese Must Go" and "Confiscating Chinatown real properties" was hotly debated thereafter. Without the determination and solidarity of Chinatown businessmen, tenants and Chinese Imperial Diplomats, San Francisco Chinatown would have been moved to Hunter's Point or Telegraph Hill. A proper picture and caption would honor the diplomat elite group who organized, fought and won the respect and dignity of rebuilding Chinatown in the same site that all enjoy today. It would be helpful if the book included a time line showing the major events relating Chinese and Chinatown for quick comprehension. My recent research led to a photo, courtesy of Chinese Historical Society of America, showing Tye Leung, a renowned social worker in San Francisco, was the first Chinese-American woman to vote - eight years before 19th Amendment. It was a significant milestone. The new immigration waves of 1960s and 1980s kept Chinatown challenged. More and more Chinese-Americans participate in the mainstream especially in politics, economics, academics, medicine and Hi-Tech. New organizations for social justice, civil rights and economic equality are formed in addition to the traditional Family Associations and the Six Companies. A bilingual list of these organizations with pictures will honor their contribution and service. Besides food and gifts, Chinese culture includes Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. A section on these institutions will show the harmony of spiritual diversity.
This book is an odyssey of Chinese people who came to Gold Mountain with a dream despite the odds, hardships, language barrier, bias and discrimination. It portrayed their sacrifice, determination and survival in making a new life for themselves and their family. They labored hard and long to earn the respect and honor in the great American family. This book makes this testimonial contribution an important chapter in American history.
Customer Reviews:
a multi-cultural children's book.......1999-10-24
I added this book to my project for multi-cultural children's book in the class for children's literature. The text shows how chinese people get ready for New Year and it, inviting poeple home with a lot of food, putting read papaer in the house, or putting on a new clothe. It is so fun to see what they do looking at the colorful pictures. It does not contain historical background in detail;however, it is a good children's book to introduce children to other culture and evoke their interest.

A Professional Tour Director's Chinatown Bible.......2001-11-21
As a professional tour director and author I'm always on the lookout for good reference books to popular cities for my tours. I am often asked to do walking tours of the Chinatown area in San Francisco and this guide is the one I refer to. It is also useful in understanding other Chinatowns in North America. It's laid out and written very well. I hope she does an updated version in 2002 or 2003.

Sensitive Portrait of 1970s S.F. Chinatown.......2001-10-02
In these days of tragedy and uncertainty, it was a pleasure to seek escape in a beautiful presentation of the past. The Nees' work gives a most complete and engrossing portrait of San Francisco's Chinatown in the early 1970s. Through 400 intensive, but mostly informal, interviews, the authors developed a comprehensive picture of the crowded Chinese ghetto in the heart of the city, one of the oldest continuing ghettos in the USA. While most Americans may have a rather tinsely picture of "Chinatown" as a place to eat great food or buy exotic merchandise, this book presents the more, down-home truths about the place. Poverty and unemployment stalked the streets, low wage garment and restaurant industries allowed new immigrants little scope to learn English or skills usable outside Chinatown. Decent housing was scarce, delinquency and gangs were on the rise. The tightly-packed area of a few city blocks had seen the transition from a bachelor society---created by bigoted immigration laws---to a family society when Chinese women were allowed to immigrate and then when general immigration began in 1965. Chinatown politics revolved around the Six Companies' conservative role as bearers of the Kuomintang standard and upholders of the status quo versus factions of younger, Americanized Chinese who wanted to attract and control newly-available government money for minorities and the war on poverty.
Not long ago, I read another book on San Francisco's Chinatown, "The Hatchet Men" by R. Dillon. Though they used some of the same historical documents, the Nees work is far superior in every way to Dillon's as a study of Chinatown because the latter contains no Chinese voice. Listening to so many Chinese and Chinese-Americans from many walks of life, you get a real feel for what life was like at that time, in that place. Dillon looked at Chinatown as an outsider studying a rather exotic place while LONGTIME CALIFORN' emphasizes the common human problems that crop up everywhere that immigrants are crammed into small areas with few resources. The Nees interviewed garment workers, waiters, mothers, students, youth gang members, cooperative organizers, businessmen, old retired bachelors, Christians, housing project residents, and tong members. They identify what made them unique as well as what they had in common with others. Their voices, plus the history and local politics written up in readable style make this a gem of a book.
The "Pantheon Village Series", of which this is a part, was one of the great series in social anthropology of its time (1966-c.1981). I have read a number of them and reviewed some for Amazon.com. I strongly recommend LONGTIME CALIFORN' to anyone who is interested in Chinese society in America, in San Francisco and its social history, or to all those who would just like to read excellent community study. `If you forget the past, you can separate yourself from it'---says one man at the end of the book. In a world full of immigrants and refugees, it is indeed useful to remember that the history of most North American families begins with an immigrant or refugee. This eloquent study of Chinatown can be a way to think about the past for anybody.
