Finally, someone who tells history like it was, without the old textbook gloss that's put so many students into premature naptime and misinformed the few who stayed awake. Davis corrects the myths and misconceptions from Columbus up through the Clinton administration, and shows that truth is more entertaining than propaganda.

        Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Kenneth Davis's aim in this program, as it is in all the titles of this popular series, is to make learning relevant and fun. He succeeds marvelously. Davis has an easygoing style and a good sense of humor. And most importantly, he knows how to present the "big picture." His history of the United States is not a series of isolated incidents that happened long ago with no bearing on contemporary American life. Listening to this presentation, we recognize patterns, notice how problems of the past resurface in our own present, and realize that history is what makes us today. We are also presented with a look at American history that is far more honest than anything gleaned from traditional textbooks. Heroes and villains alike are presented, warts and all, and the "less savory moments" in America's past are discussed frankly. For, as Davis explains, "the real picture is much more interesting than the historical tummy tuck." The theme running through the program, from pre-European settlement to the Reagan years, is the struggle for power--the never-ending battle between the haves and have-nots that is the "essence of history." Six hundred years of history are broken up into manageable segments though a series of questions (spoken in a number of different voices to help distinguish them from the main narration), each of which is given a specific answer and then discussed in the context of its contemporary setting and perhaps past and future events. This is a crash course that focuses on the basics but will inspire listeners to want to know more--which is really what learning's all about. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Uma Kukathas

"Don¿t Know Much About Kenneth C. Davis: An Interview with the Author

In this new and completely revised, expanded and updated edition of the million-selling book that launched the Don't Know Much About® series, Kenneth C. Davis uses humor, wit, great stories and his trademark question-and-answer style to bring Americans a fresh new take on history. Perfect for history buffs and history-phobes alike.

A new, completely revised, expanded and updated edition of the million-selling New York Times bestseller that launched the entire Don't Know Much About® series

When Don't Know Much About® History first appeared thirteen years ago, it created a sensation. With humor, wit, great stories, and a trademark conversational style, the book brought Americans a fresh new take on history. Shattering myths and vividly bringing the past to life, it spent thirty-five consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Davis proved that Americans don't hate history -- they just hate the dull textbook version they were force-fed in school. The book became an instant classic, an ""anti -textbook"" that has sold more than 1.3 million copies.

In his irreverent and popular question-and- answer style, Davis now returns with a completely revised edition that brings history right up to the moment -- covering such topics as the end of the Cold War, Clinton's impeachment, the bizarre election of 2000, and the events that led to September 11.

Incorporating new research and discoveries, Davis also updates and expands on such long-standing American controversies as the Jefferson-Hemings affair, the Alger Hiss trial, and the Rosenberg spy case. And he includes an expanded ""civics lesson"" that examines some of America's hottest social and political issues, such as the death penalty, gun control, and school prayer.

        4 out of 5 stars A Whistle-Stop Tour of American History.......2007-09-12

This audio book was probably the best overview I've heard in terms of telling the US story. Wonderfully narrated, the listener gets a crash course in the rich, sometimes depressing and sometimes hilarious history of the United States. I realized while listening that conventional schooling often teaches us to memorize names and mini-articles but we don't really know the whole story surrounding a particular historical happening. Davis does a wonderful job of keeping the narrative concise yet expounding on the more interesting points of celebrated events. I loved this audio book for what it is, a broad brush of a denser topic, seemingly designed for the academic type who wants to refresh a bit or the amatuer who just wants an entertaining and engaging listen of a great story. I finished this while commuting and found I couldn't help myself from running across these stories referenced in everyday life, and found it a worthwhile few hours spent checking it out.

4 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Summary of U.S. History With Racial Forays.......2007-08-26

This is a pretty good book. I enjoyed reading most of it, and it allowed me to relearn a lot of what I'd forgotten from my junior high and high school history classes, and it only took me few days to read it.

For those areas of history that you're not familiar with, this book is a good summary. For those areas you know about, you'll find the book is quite brief, and not always accurate. For example, in talking about the Battle of the Little Big Horn, the author says that Custer attacked the Indians with just over 200 soldiers. In fact, Custer's forces numbered over 400. He's criticized for dividing his forces and attacking the Indian village at several points, which may have been why he was wiped out. (After dividing his forces, Custer and his group numbered just over 200 men.)

As other readers have pointed out, the author goes off on forays into the plight of the negro/black/African American population. His points are accurate, but the amount of attention he gives to this topic makes it seem like a more significant part of our history than it deserves.

It's interesting also to read the difference in the author's writing tone and the attention he gives to events as he moves from historic research to the last 50 years, which he is writing about, in large part, from the memories of having lived through it rather than heard or read about it.

I like the book and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Ken Davis writes a great one, here.......2007-08-15

This book is absolutely spectacular in showing the truth about a lot of historical myths that too many people take at face value. Davis doesn't seem to write from any particular political viewpoint, in my perspective, but lets the facts speak out. I suppose this is why some people think he has some sort of political agenda - but if the truth is considered "liberal" or "conservative", then perhaps the bias of the reader is showing!

5 out of 5 stars Good book, very readable and fun makes reading history interesting.......2007-07-26

If you have a lay interest in US history this book is a must read. I like reading about history and I just love this book. Kenneth Davis uses what I like to call a fun encyclopedic style to cover the big topics in US history. None of the topics are covered at any significant depth but this is a fun, interesting and worthwhile review of what you should have learned in school.

1 out of 5 stars Liberal view of history. NO NEED TO READ........2007-07-21

1 out of 5 stars Maybe Anne and Kate should leave history text-writing to historians.......2007-10-03

I knew it was going to be bad when early on the Hebrews were listed among the Phoenicians, Hittites, and Persians as a major ancient civilization -- a write-up full of daft errors based solely on the Old Testament (like that the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt) despite no supporting archaeological evidence; or worse yet based on nothing at all (like that the Hebrews were monotheistic despite repeated references throughout the OT to other gods) .

Similarly, while the listed accomplishments of Phoenicians quite sensibly include things like "They invented the alphabet," the Hebrews are listed as providing such historically important developments as "They were the first to record the Old Testament" (who were the second? one wonders) and "Their prophets fought for justice for the poor and the weak". No doubt this last is a reference to the many OT passages like this from prophet and social justice campaigner Ezekiel: "Then I heard the LORD say to the other men "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity Kill them all - old and young girls and women and little children.""

The problem is not just that this one entry was clearly written on the basis of a half-remembered Bible Stories for Children collection. The entire book is full of careless errors and ahistorical junk. The Egyptians "forced thousands of slaves to work" on the pyramids. Sources for this claim? Anyone? Charlton Heston films are not historical documentaries. Or how about "Athens became wealthy from its trade and colonies"? No mention of its empire -- its extortion of tribute from the Delian League and appropriation of the treasury from Delos to Athens. No, no. The story is: Sparta got rich by slavery, Athens by trade and colonies.

This is simple history written for folks who don't care whether they believe truths or untruths, unfortunately. Avoid it like the plague.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! Historically inaccurate!.......2007-09-01

This book is loaded with historical inaccuracies! I can't imagine how Scholastic's editing department let this get by. You do not want to give this book to children without a knowledgeable adult standing by to correct it. Here are just two examples, both found on the same page. It says the Parthenon was built "in the fifth century A.D." It should have said B.C. or BCE. And it says that Athens and Sparta "were located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula." Actually, only Sparta is in the Peloponnese -- Athens is not.

        5 out of 5 stars Homeschooler's Blessing.......2006-12-16

Again, another wonderful resource book for homeschooling families and anyone who just want to know more. I have nothing but high praise for these books "Everything You Need to Know..." and highly recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Great World History Review!.......2005-10-19

I bought this book because all of the other books that I found were about 400 pages. They weren't concise and to the point which, is what I needed. This book is only a mere 130 pages in length. The pages are all neatly color coded and range from Ancient History (4000BC-AD 500) to The Modern World (1700-Present). I used this book as an adult to review the major points in World History. It's really a book meant for a younger population (ages 9 and up) but, when you don't have that much time to study or really need it as a quick reference it will the job with ease. I used it to help me pass the CSET which is a teaching requirement.

The organization of the book is fantastic! Color coded edges to the right let you know what era in history you're reading about and which items pertain to that specific era in time. The images are colorful and the book is abundant with them. They have clear bold titles which help you remember what you're reading about. Also, at the end of a specific item there is a mini-summary to help you remember the major points that were talked about.

This book is great and in fact, all of the "Everything You Need To Know About..." series are all pretty much the same and are incredibly knowledgeable and specific. You can brush up on the major points in World History or use it as a teaching reference or a parent reference for the home. Trust me, your kids/students will love this book and they'll love you for buying it for them.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know About World History.......2000-04-18

This book, though it is suggested reading for 4th to 6th graders, was helpful to me. Not only am I an adult, I am in the process of getting certified to teach high school social studies. It provided me the essentials that I must cover for any class (other than at the college level). The page layout is excellent; the variety in print type and color as well as maps and pictures made it a"fun" reading and learning experience. I highly recommend it for students, parents and social studies teachers.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining writing distinguishes this title.......2007-04-17

Despite the hyberbole of the title, a result of the series of which it's a part, this is a solid introduction to Latino history for middle school and up. What makes it distinctive is the author's writing style, which reflects her personal passion. Most series books of this sort are written according to formula--dry, matter of fact, useful for school reports and not much else. This one is worth reading cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars cultural subtleties .......2007-04-15

Santa Fe, New Mexico has a strong hispanic heritage dating back to the Conquistadores. The area has become a magnet for other Hispanics from other areas. As a psychotherapist, I work with native New Mexicans, Puerto Rican, Mexican and people from other countries of origin. This book is extremely helpful in describing the historical and cultural details that can influence the individuality of each person. It is also excellent reading. Very informative and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Overview.......2007-04-03

I use this work in a class on US Latino diversity at the university level. It provides a wonderful overview of the backdrop of Latino history to understanding the rainbow people identified as US Hispanics, in all of their demographic and cultural diversity. It is immensely readable, organized in a way that attracts the reader's attention, and it is improved with each edition. Some of the criticisms noted in other reviews are either beyond the scope of such a volume (the detailed consequences of the Mexican Revolution for the peasantry of that country) or are fine bases for discussion and consideration (the perspectives offered by this Cuban-American author). My Latino/a students appreciate it and comment favorably regarding this work and I very much look forward to the new edition.

        5 out of 5 stars Must-Read for Educators.......2007-04-02

I taught in an Arts Focus, Multiage, Spanish-Immersion school for fifteen years. I read Latino History AFTER I retired. It would have been an exceptional companion to Lies My Teacher Told Me and work by Howard Zinn. Having realized how much fiction we teach in the name of fact, we began to research what we were teaching and to teach the truth, despite the curriculum. I wish I had had Himilce Novas's Latina History as a resource then...

5 out of 5 stars Somebody Woke Up on the Wrong Side of the Cama!.......2007-04-02

I can't imagine that the title of Himilce Novas' book, Everything You Need to Know About Latino History is to be taken quite as seriously as some impassioned detractors suggest. Myself, being a Latino culture studies novice, Novas offers exactly what I need to get me started with substance, nuance, humor, passion and debth. She has written an extreemly informative and frankly handy guide, that does not overwhelm but fills the blanks in nicely and makes individual and universal connections which create a very good read. It is safe to say that Latino History concerning "all you need to know' must be an infinit research. Novas knows this; her distillation is remarkable, intelligent and clear. For us, the readers, the embrace of the various Latino cultures only begins here. And finally for me, her opinion (being Latino) is a most welcome fleshing out of what could be, authored by another, just a Latino almanac. Brava!

        3 out of 5 stars I expected more!.......2007-01-04

I enjoyed parts of the book, but I felt it could of been more informative about the country, and told more exciting bits of the folklore of Ireland. It talked more about the History than anything else, and I feel skipped many points of interest and excitement that we could of been reading instead. If the History is what you expected, it would of been informative, but the other aspects were dissapointing.

        4 out of 5 stars Easy Overview.......2005-08-12

This book is good for giving you a basic understanding of the chronology of events of Ireland's history. It's a nice easy read that gives you a basic understanding before you try to read some harder and more specific books on Irish history or politics.
