All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.
Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. For new baby.......2007-09-22
The first time I heard of this book was in my childbirth class. I loved it so much I had to buy it. I'm hoping it will become one of my baby's favorite books.
Good all-around baby book.......2007-09-19
I bought this baby book based on the reviews and the fact that Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite children's books. The book does a nice job of asking enough questions to make a complete record for your baby without being overly burdensome. Some of the other books I looked at seriously asked what the weather was on the day you found out your were pregnant. Seriously, who would care about that? This baby book also gives great suggestions for a few pictures which is helpful--like the place to put a picture of you pregnant. I am very pleased.
Don't Like the Message.......2007-09-15
I know many people love this book. I don't know why. We received one as a gift, and after reading it to my daughter, I was disturbed by the story. I felt sorry for the bunny whose parent invalidated his expression of love on each page. As many other reviewers said, it was a competition the adult wouldn't let the child win. This book contains a mean-spirited, misguided, sad, and disturbing message.
Family favorite.......2007-08-01
"Guess how much I love you" is a classic. The story is a simple dialog between a big rabbit (the parent) and a little rabbit (the baby), each professing and comparing the depth & "height" of their love for each other. We read this book almost every day to our infant daughter. She loves the watercolor illustrations & coos at the pictures. A lovely addition to a kid' book collection.
Wonderful - this really is a very good book.......2007-07-24
This is a fabulous book for little children and the grownups who read to them. When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. Perfect bedtime stories, to calm everyone down and make us ready for sweet dreams. If you can find the LARGE size book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!

Book Description
Hare solves his family’s problems by tricking rich and lazy Bear in this funny, energetic version of an old slave story. With roots in American slave tales, Tops & Bottoms celebrates the trickster tradition of using one’s wits to overcome hardship. “As usual, Stevens’ animal characters, bold and colorful, are delightful. . . . It’s all wonderful fun, and the book opens, fittingly, from top to bottom instead of from side to side, making it perfect for story-time sharing.”--Booklist

Clever... Witty... Humorous... Must Have for Teachers.......2007-05-06
Stevens, J. (1995). Tops and bottoms. New York: Harcourt Brace & Company.
Synopsis: When Hare loses everything he owns to a risky bet with a persistent tortoise, his family's lives are in danger of starvation. While Hare's family is in danger of starving, his neighbor, Bear, lies around lazily as his richly fertile farm fields lay untouched. Being a sly trickster, Hare devises a plan outsmart his slothful neighbor. Hare offers to plant, water, weed, and harvest his Bear's fields and split the profits 50/50. What Bear doesn't know is that Hare has a trick up his sleeve. Hare plants roots crops and gives Bear the tops. Then he plants leaf and stem vegetables and gives Bear the bottoms. Finally, Bear demands a season of both tops and bottoms. Hare plants the trickiest vegetable of all which really surprises Bear and the readers. In the end, Hare is able to buy back his own land and open a vegetable stand.
Evaluation: Can Hare outsmart the son of a brainy business bear? Readers will recognize this jovial trickster who triumphs by virtue of his quick wit. Stevens notes that his tale is adapted from European folktales and slave stories of the American South. This tale also has similarities with African Anansi stories. Although the author does not indicate any actual sources from which she adapted this tale, it is wildly humorous and worthy of reading for many years to come. Stevens' humorous extension of the Tortoise and Hare tale leaves young children wondering. However, older children and adults can clearly see the humor in the connection. In addition, most children do not see the humor in the fact that Hare and Mrs. Hare have hordes of small bunnies at home. Stevens' bold watercolor, pencil and gesso illustrations cover every inch of each vertically oriented double page spreads draw readers into this sharp tale. The vertical format allowed Stevens to create a tall canvas on which to illustrate succulent vegetables growing in the fields. Each page is full of exuberant details and simple boxed text. Educators will continue pulling this text out for students during spring planting and fall harvesting as a read aloud year after year. Children ages 5-10 will love hearing this tale for many years.
cute story.......2007-02-07
great book for young boys, the story tells of a great lesson in life
a guarenteed smile!.......2007-01-11
the illustartions in this captivating book would make it a must have, but the story is equally as good. kids will love the wiley rabbits and the grouchy bear. it's the kind of book that you can read over and over because the pages are so full of characters that you will see something new each time.
Great Teaching Tool!.......2005-10-01
I bought this book to use in our Educational Tours for school children on our farm. It's a great way to teach about the different parts of plants we eat and the pictures are very cute.
Whellin' A Deal.......2004-10-27
Bear is a very wealthy animal that is undeserving of his good fortune and Hare is a struggling husband/father trying to feed his family. When Hare and his wife come up with a clever plan for food, Hare decides to try it. Might I mention that Bear owns land that is very good for a vegetable garden.
"We can be business partners!" Hare says. "All we need is this field right here in front of your house. I'll do the work of planting and harvesting, and we can split the profit down the middle." Hare says soon afterwards, "So what will it be, Bear?" "The top half or the bottom half?" Hare doesn't mention what crops he will grow to bear, because, of course, he will plant veggies that bear fruit(or, well...vegetables) underground. Carrots, radishes, etc.
The next growing season, Bear will naturally choose the bottoms, but-again-he doesn't demand a certain vegetable to plant, so Hare plants vegetables like cabbage that grow above ground.
Finally Bear gets smart-or at least he thinks he is-and demands to have both the tops and bottoms of the crops; Hare agrees? Why would Hare agree to letting Bear have all the crop?
Janet Stevens has created a book thats screams SOUTHERN! Hare could possibly be the smartest rabbit since Bugs Bunny. What I'm wondering was why Hare didn't take advantage of his neighbor sooner? If only there were more books like this one.

Love this book!.......2006-07-22
If you plan to create a little library of books for your sweet little one, this is one of the books you should have. I heard about this book from another mom who read this to her children just about everynight. The CD that accompanied this book is especially darling. It does variations of the story with songs and interaction, however, it can get too repetitive for the parents having to listen to the background music (and the song itself!). Overall, it's a nice hardcover book that's to be cherished as a family "heirloom." (if it survives all the gnawing and chewing of the book!)

Book Description
What would you do if you had the biggest, greenest lawn on the block? Hare's neighbors spend every day working, watering, and worrying over their short, green grass. But not Hare! He has a plan to turn his lawn into a peaceful meadowfull of sagebrush, bluestem, and June grass.
Hare and the Big Green Lawn shows us that native plants are beautiful and easy to care for. By watching Hare's lawn transform, children can learn valuable lessons about conservation and conformity. Instructions for how to grow your own meadow are included in the back.
Customer Reviews:
Hare And the Big Green Lawn.......2007-01-08
I give this children's book as a baby shower & birthday gift because I consider it a classic. The story is about animals living together in a community where one of them is a little different. The hare is a visionary and his neighbors are nay-sayers but a beautiful meadow becomes their common ground. The detailed illustrations are for the delight of adults as well as children, for example, the hare has a copy of Watership Down beside his easy chair. This would be a great book to give at Easter because of the hare & meadow themes.
Lovely - hooray for Hare!.......2006-08-31
The grass might look greener on the other side of the fence, but when Hare leaves the countryside and moves into a new house, he discovers that his grass--a stubby new lawn--might be green, but it doesn't feel like home at all. While his neighbors toil in the hot sun, trying to keep their turf going, Hare wisely naps in the shade and lets Nature create a beautiful meadow. Soon Hare's patch of earth is the envy of all, bursting with orange, blue, and red wildflowers. Kids will enjoy Hare and his animal neighbors, as well as the beautiful, brightly-colored illustrations. Delightfully told, this story is a must for every child's bookshelf.
Lifts the heart.......2006-06-02
THE HARE AND THE BIG GREEN LAWN
Hare bought a house with a huge lawn of green grass, but while his neighbors, Skunk, Bobcat and Raven, work hard to keep up their lawns of clipped, perfect grass, Hare relaxes and waits. His lawn dies, rain turns it into mud. His neighbors frown, but Hare knows just what he's waiting for. The outcome is one of color and fragrance that brings his neighbors together.
The book is filled with color and colorful characters and the ending lifts the heart and makes me want to go out and start a wildflower garden.
While, at first, the book may appear to reward laziness, the objective is quite different--valuing the beauty of our native plant and animal life. It is a call back to what is really important for our environment and our lives. Beautifully done.
---Author's Choice Reviews: Carolyn R Scheidies
A "hare-y" tale about a weedy lawn........2006-05-12
The storyline about the hare letting his lawn die until a meadow grew in its place was cute. I especially liked the illustrations. I'd say the pictures were the best aspect of the book. The story itself wasn't all that catchy or full of rhymes as children's stories often are. The moral, however, was worthwhile. What the hare's peers originally thought about his neglect turned around when they realized he was growing a "neighborhood meadow" like they remembered. They'd forgotten the beauty of the natural meadow because they were busy tending their own lawns. They ended up arm in arm with smiles on their faces as they enjoyed the meadow and watched the fireflies. Nice ending
I loved this book!.......2006-04-28
Hare left the countryside and moved to a small house at the end of a street. He loved his new home but didn't like his wide expanse of short green grass. Not to worry! He would fix it so that it looked like the countryside.
Everyone on Hare's street worked very hard on their carefully manicured lawns and expected him to do the same. But Hare allowed the grass to wilt and turn brown and he waited and waited. Soon the yard became filled with weeds. When the winds blew and the rain fell, magical things began to happen. Soon wildflowers bloomed and flourished. The neighbors, Skunk, Bobcat and Raven, noticed that Hare's lawn didn't look weedy or messy anymore. It looked like a beautiful meadow!
Hare and the Big Green Lawn is an educational book for children that helps them understand that there are different ways to view beauty. The illustrations are filled with wonderful animal friends that children will enjoy.
Armchair Interviews says: With spring's arrival, Hare and the Big Green Lawn is a great way to introduce children to the growing season, conversation, new birth and beauty.

Customer Reviews:
Informative!.......2007-03-09
This book is very informative. If you are just starting out, or considering trying you luck with a critter that maybe you have less experience with, then you will find this book very helpful. Chapter 12 is on firearms safety, 13 is on hunting ethics, and 14 (the last chapter) covers processing game and includes some interesting game recipes. I think there is a little something in this book for everyone that enjoys hunting and someone just beginning to take up hunting is sure to benefit the most. My teenage daughters recently expressed an interest in hunting (much to my surprise) and I bought this book hoping to find material that would cover a wide range on hunting topics. I hunt, but until this year never considered that my girls would have an interest in hunting and I neglected the opportunity of starting their hunting education earlier. I think this book is just what I was looking for and will be a great way to get them started, along with the basic hunters certification course and actual time in the field with dad. I highly recommend!
The Ultimate Guide to small game hunting........2006-03-22
An excellent read with separate chapters on different species, including their natural histories and tactics. Gives clear and helpful advice on equipment, including calls and meat preparation. A great book for 'dipping into'.

Book Description
Every generation or so a story comes along, one of such enduring resonance and poignancy that it trancends time and space--Ramar is just such a story. It is a tale of soaring spiritual power--sometimes magical, sometimes profound--and always, at its heart, a celebration of life and the limitless potential of the human spirit.
The unforgettable story of a rabbit with a beautiful soul and a pair of rainbow wings
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable, timely read.......2001-12-01
I am considerably older than a pre-teen. When I discovered this book a couple of years ago, I was intrigued. It was a thought provoking read. After I finished, I immediately gave it to my nephew, a teenager, and had him read it and we discussed it's themes. It is a wonderful why to began a family discussion. I'm sure you'll be surprised by the insights you discover from those who read it.
It is especially timely in light of the events of September 11th.
It will help to open up a dialogue about virtues and we sometimes do not speak about and what is truly important.
Interesting, but should be cautiously read with an open mind.......1999-05-27
In the tradition of a fable, this book presents an interesting view of the spirit world and morality, in the premise of an unusual rabbit spirit waiting to be born as a human being, with other animal spirits and dream characters interacting and indoctrinating him about how a life should be lived.
Despite the value of a children's story bespeaking serious themes, the reader is strictly cautioned to be open-minded when understanding this book. I laud the author's view on a lot of the chapters, as this book fosters self-reliance, adherence to the Natural Law; and the importance of life, experience (from that of oneself and that of others), and virtues. However, I digress a bit from his view of religion (making it seem as a hindrance to growth, whereas they are supposed to be earthly guides), the need for God to learn along with us, the absence of punishment, and the seeming encouragement for an "anything goes" attitude (without the teaching of worldly or spiritual consequence). Although it is true that people are free-willed, the book, in reference to God, seems to focus only on His love, neglecting His justice.
The allusions used in the book were welcome, and most of the talk was didactic, interspersed with some humor. The illustrations help convey a dream-like aura, which help add flavor to the book. RAMAR is entertaining for casual reading, although one shouldn't expect any big conflict here or situations which would test the protagonist's beliefs, and that Ramar himself should have been exposed to some more of the world's harsh realities (like prejudice), even to certain concepts such as a lesser evil. RAMAR is a brave moralistic tale, and it is witty.
I cannot really encourage its reading for confused souls who seek a wellspring of spiritual inspiration, since certain facets of the content might render them more lost than before. The book can somewhat serve as a partial guide, and even if some of the points are agreeable, there is a danger of misinterpretation in the author's other viewpoints. At least the book would teach its readers that things shouldn't be taken by their face value, that the Golden Rule is still in effect, that virtue can be fostered no matter what one's religion is, and that life should be respected, understood, and enjoyed. As a whole, RAMAR is interesting, but it can bring about a mixed reaction from its readers (depending on their spirituality), and that the book still could have offered a lot more.
A hand of God book........1998-09-11
I read Ramar in March of 1998 and immediately knew that this book could encourage many. I have given numerous copies to special people in my life, including my three children, and have had cards and calls expressing their feelings of love and excitement after reading it. It is truly a story revealing our responsibility in discovering our purpose in life and that each of us do have a purpose to fulfill. I highly recommend that you read and re-read this book and do so with your heart. I would like to thank Darrell Hare for his willingness to share his inspiration with me and those I love. I look forward to future books.
Insipid Fairy Tale.......1998-07-07
This book was an insipid fairy tale. The allegory was obvious and the language better suited to children. The idea of not taking responsibility for ones actions is repugnant to most Christians. Even followers of reincarnation, believe that each new incarnation is meant to atone for mistakes and habits of the immediate past life or a way of bettering one's soul until reaching nirvana or the Christian heaven. It is disturbing to think that this message is being sent to people who might be searching for spiritual solace for the first time. The best I can say about this book, is that it is an amusing little fairy tale with a scary message.
new-age fairy-tale that borders on the absurd.......1998-07-06
I was quite disappointed in this book, considering all of the positive word-of-mouth I was given. Beware of the hype on the cover of the book--this is not a spiritual adventure--it is an excercise in feel-good philosophy. A good story should have a sense of purpose and urgency, and this book has neither. Ramar and his friends are nothing more than thinly veiled disguises for the author and many others who have no definitive religious beliefs, and who then espouse their empty ideas in a book like this and label it "a spiritual adventure". If this sort of thing appeals to you, then by all means read this book. For the rest of us, I would advise you to save your time and money.

Ready-for-Chapters
Who's Got The Bunny?
Fletcher's no ordinary basset hound. In the first place, his markings form a map of the world. In the second place, his best friend is...a flea.
Fletcher and his flea pal, Jasper, have survived a lot together -- life on the streets, incarceration at the pound, even a flea bath. But now Fletcher has a new home with Jill, and things are looking up. Until Jill and her best friend, Gwen, take Fletcher to school for show-and-tell, and the class's pet rabbit disappears. Everyone knows hounds and hares don't mix, and Fletcher is accused of having done the bunny in. Can he, with a little help from Jasper and Jill and Gwen, sniff out the real rabbit-napper before it's back to the pound for Fletcher?

Is Fletcher responsible for Aniken's disappearance?.......2005-12-15
I started reading chapter books for my cousin's children, and we decided to pick out "A Hare-Raising Tale" by Elizabeth Levy as one of our books.
The story is about a sleepy-eyed basset named Fletcher, whose fur spots are uniquely shaped like the continents of the world. He narrates the story to us, and starts off by saying that when he was a pup, he was put in the pet store, but because no one bought him, he was thrown out the back door and had to live in the streets. He makes friends with a flea named Jasper, but soon afterwards they are caught and put in the dog pound. While living in the pound, a girl named Jill comes and adopts him, and Fletcher goes to live with her. Jill and her friend Gwen decide to use Fletcher for show and tell, but things start going bad for Fletcher, when he is accused of doing something to Aniken (a mean rabbit), who is found missing after show and tell. Fletcher must prove that he is innocent by finding out what happened to Aniken.
My niece and I found this book exciting from start to finish. In the beginning of the book, Fletcher is very concerned about how he looks, and feels that he will not do well like other bassets because of his short tail and his unusual spots. But later, he finds that he has other special qualities, which he uses to solve the mystery. This provides a very nice moral for children who are concerned about what others think of them, and tells them that they should not lose hope even when things look bad.
Author Elizabeth Levy has used simple grammar and Mordicai Gerstein has drawn nice illustrations which children will find amusing and interesting. All in all, this is a fun chapter book to read which children and adults will find amusing to read.

Children's library must have!!.......2001-11-06
This is truly a delightful book. The story is simple
enough for even the youngest listener. I put this book
in my daughter's Easter basket this past Spring when
she was 20 months old. She still brings it to me to
read to her and is excited each and everytime it is
read. The watercolor pictures are excellent!
Anxious to read more books from this author.

Classic Tale for Beginning Readers - a review of "The Tortoise and the Hare".......2007-06-04
This little Ready-to-Read book is a Level One, which means according to the publisher that it is for those children who are "Starting to Read". As that is somewhat vague I went and looked up the Accelerated Reading [AR] description. "The Tortoise and the Hare" is listed as a 1.0 book, or essentially one for new first graders who are just beginning their school year.
Some text follows so you may judge for yourself:
Hey! Look at me!
Look at me run.
I can run faster than you, Squirrel.
Faster than you, Fox.
Faster than you, Bear.
Faster than you, Mouse.
I can run faster than anyone.
Four Stars. Good Read-aloud. Classic story that is nicely retold. Okay artwork. In my opinion, not a book for a true-beginning reader, but certainly my recently turned 5 y.o. son can read it. AR level 1.0.

A favored rendition of a classic fairy tale. Maintain your own pace........2006-10-23
A hasty Hare relentlessly bullies a shy Tortoise, "By the time you finish picking those spring flowers it will be winter . . . By the time you get there, the stores will be closed." A reluctant Tortoise (pulling his head inside his shell) is encouraged by his friends to accept Hare's challenge to a race and they help him get in shape. Tortoise maintains his pace while Hare races ahead. Indulging in a series of breaks that include snacks, the overconfident Hare falls asleep and is awakened from a dream of his victory to find the crowd cheering for his opponent.
The Tortoise and the Hare.......2005-04-08
I like this book because the book is about a rabbit ask a turttle for a race and the turttle didnt want to race with the rabbit bcause turttle know that the rabbit would win the race because the turttle cant run enought fast to win the rabit but then the turttle friends ask the turttle to run and the turttle didnt want to disapoint his friend so the turttle race against the rabbit and at the end the turttle win the race. I recomend this book to people read it bucause is popular book and because is interesting.
The tortoise and the hare.......2005-04-07
I think that this book is good for childrens because it has a
very good message it teaches childrens to not make fun of people
because of their characteristics.
The Tortoise and the Hare.......2005-04-07
I like this book because it was funny how the Tortoise won at the end of the race. I also like this book because the author made a very good idea of the book. I like how she tells that if you keep on trying you will acomplish what you want. That idea is going to help me do better at things and incurage me to never give up. I rate it 4 stars because it was boring at the biging of the book, but i still would like for Janet Stevens to keep doing books like that. Thats what I think about The Tortoise and the Hare.
