This book is a great way to plan the trip ahead.
Pretty much all the information is present in Canada's great
topographical maps, but those are available only when you're there...

    1 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down.......2005-08-02

I have used Lonely Planet travel guides for years. Yet, I am sorry to say that this one is a real let down. The lay out is not user friendly. The print styles are very difficult to read. The book is not directed to the outdoors person as was the hallmark of the series. I was throughly dissappointed in this guide. The Moon guide is a vastly superior guide to this area.

4 out of 5 stars great all around bk.......2004-07-26

maybe b/c we're hikers, we wish there was even more info on hiking in these parks! but the hiking info in the bks we thought very helpful. we thought the bk did a great job hitting all different tourists' needs. we especially appreciated all the little charts of "must see's," the basic info (post offices, laundry, etc.), the many well-laid out maps, etc.
our only complaint is that it seems the authors put more passionate energy into the canadian parks. the descriptions in Glacier were a little more blah. in all, a great help though! well worn on our trip.

1 out of 5 stars For Hikers Only.......2004-07-25

I own and use several Lonely Planet Guides. I have come to trust these books as thorough, authoritative and helpful in planning and implementing trips. The Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks book is an exception and meets none of these criteria unless you sole focus is hiking. This book is for hikers and has little information for others. Furthermore, of the 280 pages of actual information, only 57 pages are devoted to Glacier National Park. Information concerning lodging, restaurants and other activities such as cycling is sparse. The few maps that are included detail mainly hiking trails. If this book had been titled A Hikers Guide, I would highly recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy companion for these parks.......2004-07-08

Just the kind of book I'd want wandering these Parks for the first time. Along with lodging and eating ideas, this book includes maps of the parks, hiking routes and descriptions, and my particular favorite, the section near the end which gave background of the geological, flora and fauna aspects of this region. It was well organized and easily utilized. I carried it my bag and referred to it often, and was able to astound (or annoy) my companions with countless facts.

      Book Description

It is early in the twentieth century, and, to most, the idea of human flight is ludicrous--with good reason. There have been many failed flying attempts. Still, the Wright brothers will not let their dreams die. They brave heavy winds and rain, sandstorms, and tough crashes--all in an effort to build the first successful flying machine.
In this engaging and dynamic graphic novel format, award-winning author Bob Burleigh has collaborated with Bill Wylie to re-create a gripping tale of trial, error, and, ultimately, triumph.

      4 out of 5 stars flight.......2005-01-09

INTO THE AIR The Story of the Wright Brothers First Flight is a comic book style biography. We learn lots of neat things about the Wright Brothers in this book. We learn that the brother first started out inventing bikes and later learned of gliders. They wanted to make a flying machine. Learn about all of their trials and triumphs in this neat book.

I like that the book was written in a comic book style. Sometimes kids feel like biography are boring. This format spices things up a bit making them enjoy the reading. The illustations are also interesting to look at as they read.

I would recommend this book to reader ages 8-11. The books tells just enough about the Wright Brothers without overwhelming the reader with details. It would make a great book to read during a unit on flight.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for early readers!.......2003-11-01

My son loves to read, but has recently gotten into the "comic book" stage. This book satisfies his desire for reading comic books, without the cartoonish characters that I detest. And to top it off - it's educational!

It tells just enough about the Wright brothers without overwhelming the reader with details. A great book, with wonderful illustrations at a fantastic price.

I purchased this book for my son from the Smithsonian Air and Space Musuem and he really loves it. A+ book! (I'm currently looking for other historical books of this nature!)

        Book Description

An aviation expert uncovers the brilliance behind the first successful flight of an engine-powered plane
In the centennial year of the Wright Brothers' first successful flight, acclaimed aviation writer T. A. Heppenheimer reexamines what Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved. In First Flight, he debunks the popular assumption that the Wrights were simple mechanics who succeeded by trial and error, demonstrating instead that they were true engineering geniuses. Heppenheimer presents the background that made possible the work of the Wrights and examines the work of Samuel P. Langley, a serious rival. He places their work within a broad historical context, emphasizing their contributions after 1903 and their convergence with ongoing aeronautical work in France.
        T. A. Heppenheimer (Fountain Valley, CA) has written extensively on aerospace, business, and the history of technology. His many books include Turbulent Skies: The History of Commercial Aviation (0-471-10961-4), Countdown: A History of Space Flight (0-471-14439-8), and A Brief History of Flight: From Balloons to Mach 3 and Beyond (0-471-34637-3), all from Wiley.

        4 out of 5 stars A bit too technical.......2003-05-27

This was a very interesting book concerning the early history of man's efforts to conquor the sky. Unfortunately for the lay reader, of which I am one, there was a lot of technical writing involved, and it lost me a lot of the time, particularly when the author was speaking about dihedrals and things of that ilk. When it came to the straight history of the flight efforts, and the Wright brothers, the story really moved along, but it did bog down for me in the scientific aspects. I don't want to take anything away from the expertise of the author, which is extensive, so I do encourage folks to read this book. Just be warned about the technical aspects of it. Gloss over them, and there is still a good read.

5 out of 5 stars This One Takes Off.......2003-02-18

By Bill Marsano. The centennial of flight has given us a spate of Wrighteous books this year, but few can match this one for expert knowledge and for pleasurable reading. Heppenheimer is an aviation expert and writer who has covered the ground exceedingly well. Most important, he avoids the folkloric view of the Wrights as a couple of plucky, red-cheeked mechanics who somehow kicked an airplane into being for a lark. They were, in fact, a pair of solid and serious young Midwestern businessmen who looked the part: Even in the workshop they customarily wore jacket and tie. They flew with their hats on. Generally they resembled a couple of bankers who are about to turn down a loan application. Beyond that, they were not merely mechanics but natural-born engineers and self-taught scientists who observed, studied, tested--and learned from their mistakes as well as their successes. Most of us have heard the 'story' of the Wright Brothers--this book helps us comprehend the astonishing magnitude of their achievement, which took them less than five years, working part-time and paying their own way.

Heppenheimer brings a lot of color into his story--the Wrights and others are revealed to us as human beings rather than icons--and he goes far afield, too, bringing us the stories of those others who preceded and competed with the Wrights. The result is a nicely rounded saga of man's long struggle to progress from wishes to wings. He also answers a question people often forget to ask: The Wrights produced the first man-carrying powered airplane in 1903; they set the world on its heels when, in 1908, they went to France for their first large-scale public demonstrations (before an extremely skeptical audience)--so how was it that they faded so quickly from the scene? I won't reveal the answer here (though I will suggest that the facts seem to pre-figure the later struggle between the Apple and the PC). And I will strongly urge you to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.......2005-01-18

I recently took a trip to Wright Brothers' National Park with my niece and this book was a great addition to our trip. The puzzles gave her something to do on the road besides counting signs. With every page turned, her interest level increased as we got closer to the park. When we got there, she used the scavenger hunt to direct her trip and she actually read the signs that most kids went darting past. This book turned out to be her guide to this important time in history. This book is great for kids (and their families) as they will be turned on to history in a brand new light. Definitely recommended!

              1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2003-01-31

This "book" is marketed as "hardcover". What it really is is low quality decorated envelopes (more like paper) bound in a decorated cardboard cover. The quality is poor. This is definitely something you could make on your own and it would be nicer!
