Book Description
Many creatures with small brains and simple nervous systems - such as insects - are astonishingly good at coping with the world around them. A fly, for example, can deftly evade a swat, manoeuvre perfectly well in a cluttered world, and execute a flawless landing on the rim of a teacup. Do such creatures use clever short-cuts to vision and navigation, and if so, can these tricks be exploited to create new kinds of robots? These questions are explored in this book, which contains articles by experimental biologists as well as computer scientists, in this newly emerging multidisciplinary field. This is a fresh approach to an area of research that has traditionally been dominated by engineering methods, and the book is written in a style in which technical jargon is kept to a minimum.

Customer Reviews:
So, Named After St. Francis, Was It?.......2006-08-17
I found that out in this book. Okay, I really always suspected that anyway but confirmation was nice. I can't compare this guide to others detailing the sights, sites, and cultural offerings of San Francisco, since this is the only one I've bought, but I feel like it was comprehensive enough to stand alone. The geography (um, hilly) of the city is written-up, along with a nice overview of its attractions, parks, restaurants, climate, and the culture that makes this city both unique and a multi-cultural melting pot.
A WOMAN'S GUIDE TO SAN FRANCISCO.......2006-08-02
I HAVE USED FROMMER'S GUIDES FOR YEARS. THIS ONE IS A POOR
CHOICE FOR THE GENERAL TRAVELER OR A PERSON WHO HAS VISITED SAN FRANCISCO BEFORE. IT ATTEMPTS TO BE TOO MUCH OF A ROUGH GUIDE TYPE GUIDE BOOK. TOO MUCH SPACE IS SPENT ON "CUTE" RESTAURANTS or B & Bs. THE LIST OF VARIOUS TYPES OF RESTAURANTS IS TOO SLANTED AND NARROW. I FINALLY FOUND A COUPLE OF LISTINGS FOR INDIAN RESTAURANTS BUT NONE IN THE BROAD GENERAL LIST AS AN EXAMPLE. THE HOTEL LIST IS TOTALLY LACKING. WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO OTHERS FOR PURCHASE. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
Everything you need... but nothing more........2006-06-30
The book is great... very informational, even gives a couple different sample itineraries. However, nothing fancy about it. No pictures, nothing visual. But very practical for the price.
Took Two.......2006-05-04
$8.50 is a great price for this 360 page book. I like that it incorporates money saving ideas and answers fundamental questions for tourists. I also brought along the Golden Gate Trailblazer guide to fill in the walking section. Although there is a fair amount of information available on the internet about the San Francisco area, having these books with me as I tooled around was a necessity. The free downtown city street map provided by my hotel provided even more detail. Frommer's is very comprehensive, current, and provides a huge amount of practical guidance.
Frommer's San Francisco 2006.......2006-02-22
Very easy to read and helpful hints on the travels around the city. The map attached to the back is easy to pull out and fits in a shirt pocket. Everything you need to know before you arrive is listed in the book; i.e. walking tours, water tours, trolly tours, etc. prices are listed so if you are on a budget, you can get the best bang for your buck. Highly recommend this book and we have use Frommer's for all of our travels.

Pretty good!.......2007-01-12
amazon product! satisfied, I was not in a haste, but it was delivered as per schedule and in perfect condition as promised.
Very reliable--never steered us wrong!.......2006-09-11
My wife and I bought this book in preparation for a week-long trip down the California coast in August 2006. We started with a couple of days in Napa and Sonoma and visited a number of wineries, including several recommended by Frommer's. The recommended ones (including Schramsberg, Artesa and Chateau St. Jean) were all highlights of our visit, and we found ourselves wishing that we had gone to some of Frommer's other starred wineries instead of less impressive ones that had been recommended by friends, magazines, etc. Frommer's restaurant listings were also dead-on: the recommended ones were all fantastic, while we agreed with the "overrated" assessment of another.
From then on, having realized that we could trust the book's advice, we found ourselves relying on Frommer's more and more when choosing restaurants and other attractions. From a small Chinese restaurant in Carmel to an outstanding barbecue place in San Luis Obispo, we never had a bad meal while following the book's suggestions. We also felt that the section on Big Sur, though a bit brief, steered us to the most spectacular sights and hikes and helped us make the most of our drive down that wonderful stretch of coastline. The hotels we stayed at in San Simeon and L.A., again at the book's recommendation, were just what we were looking for. Finally, at the end of our trip in L.A., Frommer's guided us to the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, a fascinating and worthwhile attraction that we would not have known about otherwise.
Because this was the only book we brought on our trip, I have no basis for comparison with other California guidebooks. I am sure there are other books that are equally accurate, but as someone who travels a lot and has used many different guidebooks--both good and bad--I was genuinely impressed with the amount of accurate and helpful information that Frommer's managed to cram into this book. From fine dining to cheap take-out, luxury hotels to motels and B&Bs, and big-name attractions to off-the-beaten-path finds, this book guided us through a well-rounded California vacation while helping us avoid tourist traps. Highly recommended.
a lot of useless information (within the total of 754 pages).......2006-01-18
This is the kind of book which asks to be read for hours and hours AND then you go on double check on the internet. E.g. the list of hotels in Santa Cruz refers to the type of traveler who loves to spend more than $250 per night - tripadvisor.com offers a different picture...
While planning a tour I'm looking for a tour guide which gives me distances on the map, smaller maps with an overview about an area or town (not only for SF or Yosemite) and more background information than the frequent use of adjectives ("breathtaking" "the world's most spectacular").
There is a lot in this book BUT...
A Good Guide - Weak on Photos.......2005-12-24
This is a massive 700 page guide suitable to the large State of California, a state that has many places to explore and visit.
It has a comprehensive description of almost every area of California and has excellent maps and guides including street maps of San Francisco. You will not be disappointed with this book as a guide. You will be disappointed with a lack of photographs. A picture is worth a 1000 words and this book has virtually none. So if you are buying just one book, then buy Eyewitness Travel Guides DK - California which is almost as big - 630 pages but has stunning photos. If you are buying more than one book, consider this Frommer guide.
as a local, it's not very good.......2005-02-06
As a california resident for 15 years, I bought the guide because I had been amazed at the detail of Frommer's guides during my travels. Perhaps I expected too much, but I find the Frommer's California to be worthless.
For example, to say that this guide covers "san francisco's hippest resturants" is a bit of a stretch. They list about 10 old standards, in a town with about 4000 resturants - a good start, but nothing particularly hip. The guide focused on north beach and fisherman's wharf. San Francisco's bar and music scene is huge - about 6 places are listed, none particularly cutting edge.
The strength of the guidebook is probably out of town - Yosemite, Gold Country, Eureka. Even there, I found the information didn't really have the bite it should. Focus was on toursity stuff, not the really fun stuff.
This guidebook needs a top-to-bottom revamp, instead of a yearly update to make sure the phone numbers are correct.
For san francisco especially, get smaller more focused guidebooks.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-05-21
We used this book and spent 4 wonderful days in LA. We did not do the Theme parks. We did attend a show at the laugh factory and watched a play.
Things I liked about the book:
- 2 Day, 3 Day, 4 Day itineraries helped us plan our days
- Resturants listed as having excellent food did infact have excellent food. We found the section on late night joints particularly useful.
- The book had good amount of detail on how to book tickets and concerts.
Regret:
I wish I had read the book before I got to LA. Tickets to plays and shows get sold out awfully quickly.
Book with Good Intentions, But Some Improvements are Needed.......2007-01-04
It might appear non sense, but I purchased this book just after I came back from a trip to L.A. In fact, I just wanted to see if I missed something important while I was there...and in fact, I didn't miss much.
Honestly, I think the book has good intentions. Ratings on attractions help people to decide what to do and visit, especially if time is short. However, the relevance of each spot is something that is a personal choice and opinions on what's worthy or not should be up to each reader. This is a feature that could be removed from the book, since it tends to influence people's decisions, sometimes negatively.
Inane comments are also a good feature of this book. Some subjects are not approached in a straight way and it helps us to get tired easily, even before we reach the point we want to. Sense of humor is good, but it should be carefully dosed.
I give this book 3 stars, which is a good rating, because this book makes a good general reference on Los Angeles anyway, but reviews and options given should be a little more unbiased in next editions.

An Outstanding Guide To The City .......2006-08-21
The author, Caroline Kallas, is a San Diego native and she is both very knowledgeable and passionate about her city. This gives the book a certain spark and energy that takes it to a higher level than the typical travel guide. It helps that San Diego is a lively city with great weather and many interesting places to explore. Of course, Kallas covers the famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World and the Gaslamp Quarter. But she also describes some of the city's lesser known attractions and neighborhoods in a way that makes them sound intriguing and worthy of a visit. Unfortunately, my wife and me have only a few days. But this book convinced me that we could vacation here for several weeks and never get bored.
Of course, Frommer's guides are primarily intended for people on at least a mid range budget. So those, such as backpackers, looking for information on youth hostels and other extra cheap options for eating and sleeping will probably want to get a Lonely Planet guide instead. But the majority of travellers will find this be an excellent choice.
San Diego review.......2006-03-11
Excellent book, clear, consise and to the point. And very focused on the San Diego area.

Book Description
Using the political history of the nation as the framework on which social, economic, and cultural developments depend, co-authors Carnes and Garraty describe how the voices and actions of many peoples have produced a particular political structure—the United States, a single nation—and how that nation has in turn influenced the lives of everyone. Long renowned for its elegant narrative style, The American Nation
in this Twelfth Edition retains its most significant strength—its rich and memorable prose.
In this revision, the authors have revised each chapter to incorporate recent research and scholarship, refined the prose style, greatly expanded the number of maps, selected many new illustrations to engage students visually, and written informative, new captions to encourage students to reflect on the information conveyed in the illustration. In each chapter, a new feature, “Debating the Past” presents the varying views of historians on a question related to the chapter content. The final chapter (33) carries the story of the American nation to the present with coverage of the war in Iraq and the election of 2004.

American Nation.......2007-09-23
It came very soon after I had ordered it and it was in the exact condition that I payed for. Thank you!!
Poor.......2004-09-14
This book is filled with too much details and words. It takes too much effort to just read and understand the details in each chapters. It is boring to read and the only good thing about it is that it comes with alot of datas in the American history. If you are a History major, don't miss it.
Worst History Book in a long time.......2003-09-22
Even as a lover of history, I find this book boring, overwritten and incable of reliable use. When looking up a term, not only can it not be found by reading the chapter, but the index points you to the wrong page! This book is a waste of money and I suggest that you do not purchase it.
A Fabulous Guide to American History in Class and Beyond.......2001-01-09
This text is absolutely unsurpassed in terms of clarity, conciseness and general usefulness. I first used Garraty's book in 8th grade, then again as a supplement to some other texts in a U.S. A.P. class in high school (I got a 5 on the test, which I am confident is owed entirely to Garraty) and still use it for general reference in college. In a little over 1000 pages, Garraty covers just about every major event in United States history in interesting and extremely clear prose. I have yet to find any book that communicates such an enormous amount of information in such a small amount of space with such an enormous degree of clarity. I promise that this book will not only improve your understanding of U.S. history, but will also serve as a lifelong reference source.
Our "Bible" in AP History.......2000-07-08
Garraty's book The American Nation was informative and interesting. It provided information needed to help the student's in my AP History class. Granted, it was not perfect and was confusing at times, but all in all, it provided a good, detailed description of our history. Here are the pros and cons of Garraty's book. PROS: 1). Garraty is knowledgeable in his assessment of history 2). The book is very helpful with its timelines at the end of each chapter 3). Garraty explains the gist of every major event and sometimes non-major event 4). It's the only book where our class actually worshipped :) 5). IT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR AP HISTORY AND THE NATIONAL EXAM. I (personally) felt confident with the outcome of my exam, but that could also be due in part to my teacher who really complemented with Garraty. 6). It could be a GREAT paperweight! CONS: 1). It's not a good book to keep in your backpack all day long 2). Sometimes Garraty likes to force his opinions on certain historical figures ( he likes Hamilton, but not Jefferson) 3). There ARE events he doesn't cover that many might think was important or he might undercover events that many might think was important.
That's about it for the pros and cons, but remember these are just my opinions! Hope they helped! Good luck in AP History or whatever you're doing in regards to this book!!

Product Description
"Homeland security" is the most serious issue challenging Americans today. How they deal with this problem will determine whether the United States will preserve individual liberty and economic prosperity, or degenerate into a centralized bureaucratic police state. This book explains why "the Militia of the several States" are the only establishments the Constitution explicitly empowers to provide the crucial elements of homeland security. And it describes the practical steps Americans should take to revitalize the constitutional Militia in each of the States.

Required reading for EVERY American .......2007-05-29
Presently, our republic is seething with citizen discontent on a range of important issues: the burgeoning police state under a proto-fascist "homeland security" banner...the cultural and economic threat of unchecked Mexican immigration...the increasing strictures on our God-given right (reiterated by the Second Amendment)...the hokey "War on Terror".
How in the world can the citizens of these 50 sovereign States, return to the liberty and self-government that we supposedly assured ourselves when "We the People" assented to the U.S. Constitution as our means of limiting the Leviathan State?
In this trenchant little guidebook for American citizens, constitutional scholar Dr. Edwin Vieira, Jr leads us back to the rule of law, step by constitutional step! What an erudite, plain-speaking, and eminently "do-able" plan the author presents!
This is no guidebook for rifle-toting "Montana Freemen" nut-cases; it is a measured, historically documented plan of action for truly reclaiming our liberty and our "homeland security", one neighborhood at a time, in concert with local "first responders" (police, fire dept, EMS, et al) but entirely on a volunteer basis: orderly, law-abiding, serious-minded citizenship, just as our colonial-era forefathers -- and the framers of the Constitution -- intended!
After you read this book (believe me, you'll be full of hope and ready to say, "Let's Roll!") just imagine the 4th of July, 2010...in 535 American towns and cities, holding an "AMERICA AGAIN!" rally, to institute the "Citizens' Homeland Security Associations" that Dr. Vieira introduces in this masterful book! I tell you, never in my life have I had such hope in the future of this republic -- if only people will read such books as this one, and actually take them to heart.
Are you sick of the repetitive news cycles and foreign wars? Tired of being told that America is inexorably becoming a police state, or will soon be overrun by illegal immigrants?
Get this book TODAY; you'll finish the last page with more hope than you've had for years.

Book Description
Providing students with a thought-provoking account of America’s past, The American People examines how American society assumed its present shape and developed its present forms of government.
Emphasizing the interaction of ordinary Americans with extraordinary events, the text combines the discussion of political events with analysis of their impact on social and economic life. The comprehensive narrative encompasses description of the lives and experiences of Americans of all national origins and cultural backgrounds, at all class levels of society, and in all regions of the country. The thoughtful analysis seeks the connections among the political, social, economic, technological, and cultural factors that have shaped and reshaped American society over four centuries.

An important alternative approach to teaching U.S. history.......2006-10-27
I have been teaching U.S. history at a few colleges and universities in Chicago and its suburbs for the past five years. This is the textbook that I have invariably assigned in the time; in fact, as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the late nineties, it was the text that my mentor used in the U.S. survey class in which I apprenticed for her. I have found that my students are generally enthusiastic about this textbook's focus on "ordinary" Americans, like themselves, who, as the book reminds them, make the history of our nation, as the elites have always done, usually by going about their daily lives. Thus, Nash/Jeffrey, et al, examine the effects of some critical historical developments (such as the American Revolution; the emergence of the Market Economy during the Early Republic; the long-running intersectional coflicts over the continued existence of and the often-advocated extension of American black slavery; and, the significant role played by the self-made, visionary President Abraham Lincoln in managing the Union's ultimate victory in the U.S. Civil War) on the average Americans who participated in them. Moreover, the authors attempt to show that non-elite Americans have often actively shaped their own destinies, and not just passively allowed the powers-that-be to manipulate them (think: the Regulator Movement of North Carolina's Backcountry in 1766; the Whiskey Rebellion and Shay's Rebellion after the Revolution, both waged by average Americans out to safeguard their independence from what they perceived as governmentally-perpetrated tyranny; the manner in which many Americans, as a result of the First Great Awakening, just threw out their tradition of submission and deference to their alleged "betters"; and, the way that ordinary white laborers and farmers voted with their feet, and set out over the Appalachians in the 1780s and on to both find land and to get away from their landlords, creditors and employers in the eastern states). This particular text's unique perspective reinforces my own claim, always made to the students at our very first class-meeting each semster, that the history of the U.S. is not simply a record of the so-called illustrious achievements of elite Americans (people to whom many students have trouble relating, let alone caring much about) that must be memorized, rather, that it is also, truthfully, the collective story of all of our families.

Lots of fancy designs.......2007-03-08
We are building a victorian house, and I was looking for an affordable plaster design for above the stairway. This has many designs, all fancy and beyond my ability to replicate (or willingness to hire the work done). It does have many neat variations, and is a good resource for ideas.
