Book Description
Every parent awaits the question: Where do babies come from? First Comes Love is a charming introduction to the birds and the bees, not to mention alligators, spiders, dragonflies, squirrels, peacocks, and--of course--people.
Illustrated by Clare Mackie, whose clever visual jokes and whimsical flourishes will appeal as much to grown-ups as they do to children, the book marries fun rhyming text with fascinating fact to tell a story of love, courtship, and birth across the animal kingdom. Written for the ages of 4 to 8, when kids are at their most curious and least embarrassed, here is the story of the lightning bug-"When the firefly is in a flirting mode, / He scribbles and blinks a special code." The penguin--"Quivering and caressing with flippers and beaks, /
They touch and talk for two full weeks." And the kangaroo--"Kangaroo
babies are rarely seen, / Because they're no bigger than a lima bean." Then below, in captions that amplify the verse, kids learn that every firefly species has its own blinking language, that penguins try to find the same mate year after year, and that a new-born kangaroo stays in his mother's pouch for the first three months.

Has it all.......2006-11-02
this book was great , had lots of information, and made the understanding of love and sex much easier.
I liked it!.......2006-05-05
Well, after reading the Amazon reviews, I wasn't sure about this book, but got it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. No, it's not all about human reproduction (although that is mentioned in there). We have "Where did I come from?" for that, and that does an excellent job. This instead shows how a lot of different animals reproduce and truthfully, I learned some things. Plus, the illustrations were really cute and didn't take long to read. I really liked it and the kids liked it too.
7-8 year olds.......2005-08-27
I like how this book focused on love and attraction, not just the physical mechanics. It was a good seg way in to adding your own moral thoughts.
Confusing & not very informative.......2005-04-10
I got this book thinking it would actually explain the birds and the bees to my daughter. No such luck. Because it's all in rhyme, it doesn't really make much sense to a small child. And it gives trivia without explaining well how babies are actually made. Example: it tells you that "a male octopus captivates/the interest of intended mates/by changing into shimmering stripes/which pleases even the shyest types...etc. etc. How do they actually mate? It doesn't say. If you're looking for a cute little book that could spark some conversation, this is it. If you're looking for a book that is heavy on factual information that will teach your child about the birds and the bees, look elsewhere.
cute but no answers.......2004-08-18
Sweet drawings and somewhat informational (if you are interested in the process of seduction in alligators, spiders, sea horses, and many other animals). But virtually no information about humans. For example, a page has a sperm and an egg cell, but neither the text nor the drawing tells where the two are coming from. Anything about sexuality is hidden behind rhyming text and caricatures of animals. While it's not a bad book to have (my 4- and 6-year-old enjoyed it), it doesn't provide any answers for a child who asks questions.

With a special focus on ecotourism, the authors of The New Key to Costa Rica help you discover the diversity of this colorful country's remarkable flora and fauna (from tree ferns to sloths) and learn ways you can contribute to efforts to preserve it. A well-researched sustainability rating highlights lodgings that are active in protecting an environmental, economic, and cultural balance.
The book offers complete coverage of sights, lodging, dining, and outdoor adventures, including wildlife viewing, parks and reserves, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, and diving. --Kathryn True
Book Description
The latest edition of The New Key to Costa Rica describes the ecolodges that have made Costa Rica famous, along with 500 pages of practical travel information, chapters on history and ecology, and over 20 maps. The new, 17th edition focuses on destinations owned and operated by grassroots community conservation groups.
The guidebook highlights the adventures you can have at these rustic country lodges: riding horses to a valley hidden in the mountains of the Karen Mogensen Reserve in the Nicoya Peninsula; watching sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach at Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste; setting out across a hanging bridge to get close to a 175-foot waterfall at Los Campesinos Reserve near Quepos; and traveling down jungle rivers in a dugout canoe to Yorkin village in the Bribri Indigenous Territories on the Panama border, where women raise organic cacao. These destinations have the added advantage of being easier on the pocketbook than many other forms of ecotourism. Most community-based lodges cost $25 to $35 per person including three hearty meals.
Costa Rica is recognized as a leader in ecotourism, and The New Key to Costa Rica has been instrumental in fostering responsible tourism since its inception in 1978. Author Beatrice Blake has traveled there for over 30 years and knows the country well. Take advantage of her expertise to help you plan a vacation that will also benefit Costa Rica's rich biodiversity and its vital democracy.
Including 20 maps and features a full-color, fold-out map of Costa Rica.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for CR relocators!.......2007-05-14
We have been to CR for a visit and are now considering the BIG move. This book covers every you would need to know and surprises you with information you didn't think of. We have even shared this information with our family that has lived there for 5 years and it has helped them. It also gave a brief but interesting history of Costa Rica as well as current government, economics and culture. Does a good job of explaining the cultural differences which are most important to the person considering a move anywhere! One thing I might stress... the author states several times that English is taught in the schools. This might lead you to believe that you will have little problem with communication. In our trip last year to the Central Valley and the Pacific Coast we did not meet one person that understood us or could speak to us in English. I highly advise, begin you Spanish Lessons before your anticipated trip!
Great Guide!.......2007-03-23
This guide was the better of the two I bought....and the other one was Fodor's. New Key was accurate, impartial, and covered lots of different kinds of stuff....
Invaluable - ultra-reliable eco-tourism guide.......2007-03-06
I used this book, and the community-based eco-tourism agency recommended in this book, to plan a two-week trip. I was alone, female, and non-Spanish speaking. I had the time of my life. Everything went off without a hitch. Great people, waterfalls, food, views, and adventures galore. Thanks to the author. None of the other guidebooks came close to the insight and accuracy of this guide.
Excellent.......2006-11-17
[...]The 18th edition of New Key to Costa Rica improves upon a veritable classic.
2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the guidebook which guides travelers toward
tasteful family-run lodgings and communities that are actively protecting the rural environment.
Written in a style that feels like a conversation with a travel guide, the New Key provides countless insights about the culture, the environment and the people of Costa Rica.
First authored by Jane Wallace, the book was then updated by her daughter Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher. Beatrice prepared this edition alone, but it is easy to see that the text has been guided by a number of joyful souls.
In 1992 this book was the first guidebook to use a green-rating system. In this edition, the rating system is downplayed in favor of focusing on community efforts.
Focusing on family farm visits allows Blake to show travelers the connections among organic agriculture, appropriate energy technology and diverse ecosystems. She writes: "By visiting these communities, not only will you meet some lovely people, but you will be inspired by their ability to put innovative principles into practice."
For travelers wishing to experience tropical nature, there is no better immersion than visiting the communities that are at the forefront of conservation.
Exciting adventure sports are not omitted. One of the highlights of the book is a review of the country's best canopy tours. Additional "adventure reports" showcase innovative efforts throughout the country.
Among the informative sidebars are capsule reviews of the Talamanca Ecotourism Network, the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center and turtle watching at Ostional Wildlife Refuge.
New Key to Costa Rica covers all the bases - from the practical details of deciding when and where to go to tips on learning Spanish and volunteer vacations. For those seeking an eco trip, this book is a must.
This is it, the real thing.......2006-04-25
Absolutely the best of the four (you can guess the other three) books we took, because this on focuses on the off-beat and the green. Use it to locate the indepth Costa Rica, the one that gets you away from everyone else and makes you feel happy about it.
Customer Reviews:
O why didn't I keep reading?.......1999-10-18
I found this old destroyer issue by chance. I had stopped reading a few years back when the books got really bad. My only question is why didn't someone tell me they got good again!!!!! This was a very exciting read. Something about it just felt "right". Just like the old days. Now I will have to try to find the next issues.
The return of Remo and Chiun.......1998-09-03
They have returned, the only thing that would make me feel better is if Remo would visit the author of the previous three books. The pace is fast and engrossing, there is plot, humour, and satire. Remo and his father are no longer boring karate dancers filled with fears. This book is not only good in comparison to the previous three but is excellent on it's own. I am immediately buying #110 and #112. I purchased this book based on an E-Mail from the current author promising that the debacle of Remo as the Executioner would not be repeated. Sinanju will never fade.
Remo lives!.......1998-08-05
I can't express how happy i was to see remo and chuin back the way they ought to be. The previous few issues in the series had me worried that they would join the ranks of the many souls they have vanquished in the Great Void. Not so! This book is great. I could not put it down.
the house is pleased.......1998-08-01
LO The pale piece of pigs ear that has chronicled the movements of the house of Sinanju, Has suffered the death of 1000 broken bones. The new writers beware of the night tigers in the shadows and keep the stories on track lest they suffer the same fate. Chuin the wise
All hail Remo........1998-07-06
To me the wonder of this issue of the Destroyer novels can be summed up in one statment. It seems, Warren Murphy has seen through the conspiracy between the heaven's gate cult and the incredible success of the ice cream gurus Ben and Jerry. In such a confusing world thank god we have Remo to show us where things really stand and how this world really works. Also I found it quite touching that both Remo and Chiun wished they could have done something to stop the disaster in Waco, but they explain they were off on a different assignment. Who says assassins are heartless.
Customer Reviews:
early enviro bashing.......2004-01-05
The authors (Thomas Shepard as well as Melvin Grayson) take on a number of "liberal" causes, especially environmentalism and consumer advocacy. This book (and others) set the tone for later works, using methods such as name calling (environmentalists are "irate fish-worshipers" and "professional nature lovers") and questionable science.

Book Description
It has long been noted that the book of Lamentations shares, at least in part, a theological outlook with the prophetic literature that the destruction of Jerusalem was the result of Yahweh's decisive action against the sins of the nation. Too often, however, this relationship has simply been presupposed, or assumed to be a relationship of shared perspective. To date, there has been no systematic exploration of how it is that Lamentations accepts and/or modifies the theological outlook of the prophetic literature. In addition, when the theology of the prophets has been discussed in relation to Lamentations, there has been a tendency to group all the prophetic books together as if they existed as a homogeneous whole, and shared amongst themselves a singular outlook. This tendency to simplify the theological complexity of the prophetic literature coincides with a similar tendency to reduce the theology of Lamentations to simple, monotheistic assertions. Drawing on the literary insights of Mikhail Bakhtin, this study aims to explore in detail the nature of the relationship between Lamentations and the pre-exilic/exilic prophetic literature. Drawing on the notions of dialogism, polyphony and double-voicing, the study argues that Lamentations enters into a dialogic relationship with prophetic literature, a relationship that both affirms and subverts that literature. Central to the acknowledgement of the dialogic interaction between Lamentations and the prophetic literature is the recognition of Lamentations as a multivalent, polyphonic text in which unmerged viewpoints exist in a tension-filled relationship.

Book Description
Jerusalem 627BC: The King's court session is interrupted by a fiery-eyed prophet predicting doom and destruction in his lifetime if the Words of God are not understood and obeyed. The young King Josiah tries to obey, but is distracted by the twin evils of power and arrogance. And then the book of the law is discovered...
Over the next forty years the "Promised Land" of Judah became a crossing point for the armies of Egypt and Babylon. In that land arose one man - Jeremiah - who saw more than the others; who saw the destruction of all those who would not repent.
Travel back in time to witness the struggle for survival not only of the Kingdom of Judah but of the very Word of God itself: and go yet further as Jeremiah himself delves into Israelite history to assemble the ultimate weapon for his cause: the Bible itself.
