Fight for the Tiger: One Man's Battle to Save the Wild Tiger from Extinction
Michael Day Manufacturer: Trafalgar Square ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0747251479 |
Book Description
The remarkable story of one man's crusade to halt the international black market trade in tiger parts, a brutal practice that threatens the animal with extinction. The underground trade in wildlife is now the world's second largest criminal activity, and the tiger is the black market's most sought-after prey. The onslaught of poachers, who supply tiger parts to China and the Far East for use in archaic medicines, has destroyed 95 percent of the wild tiger population. Yet, there are no top secret agencies fighting organized crime against nature. This extremely dangerous investigative work is done by only a few individuals. Michael Day is one of them. Using the latest covert surveillance technology to penetrate gangster-dominated smuggling networks, Day has gathered a compelling dossier of evidence, alerting the world to the tiger's plight and forcing the governments of China and Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong to outlaw the sordid trade. Fight for the Tiger is a gripping adventure and a human tale of courage and determination. 448 pp 4 1/2 x 7 8 pp color & 16 b/w photosCustomer Reviews:

France is known as a place that will delight the senses--and this Rough Guide will help you bathe in them all, from eyefuls of architecture to the sounds of la mer lapping against the shore, the touch of designer fabrics to the smells and tastes of some of the most renowned cuisine in the world. As authors Baillie and Salmon put it, "The pleasures of the palate run from the simplest picnic of crusty baguette, ham and cheese washed down by an inexpensive red wine through what must be the most elaborate take-away food in the world, available from practically every charcuterie; such basic regional dishes as cassoulet; the liver-destroying riches of Périgord and Burgundy cuisine; the fruits of the sea; extravagant pastries and ice cream cakes.... If you feel inadequate in the face of all this choice, never be afraid to ask advice, for most French people are true devotees, ever ready to explain the arcane mysteries to the uninitiated."In France: The Rough Guide, the country's attractions are written up with creative flair and insightful advice, and the honest reviews of food and accommodations offer something for every traveler's budget. The coverage is complete with sections exploring history, cuisine, wine, literature, architectural terms, art, festivals, and politics. Bon voyage!

A must for a vacation in France... Balance with 2nd book.......2004-04-10
This book will help you decide where is best to spend your vacation in France. There are clear critical descriptions of all the regions and great general info on getting around in France.
If you aren't interested in "roughing" it and staying in lower priced hotels.. the guides are still very useful in rating attractions, and areas in which to stay... but you will need another book to look at more moderate and luxury hotels.
I would definitely read this book before going to France.

Info...liberally seasoned with author's high self-opinion.......2004-02-29
More than that, though, was the condescending tone he used when discussing holy places (i.e., referring to the devotion to Saint Thèrése of Lisieux as "a cult"). The author's inflated sense of self was reflected in nearly every section of this book, and I soon relegated it to the bottom of my suitcase: I wanted information; not editorializing. For the rest of my trip, I did quite well with small town maps (free at any tourism office).

The Rough Guide to Paris 9 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
ROUGH GUIDES Manufacturer: Rough Guides ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1843530783 Release Date: 2003-11-20 |
Book Description
INTRODUCTIONIt's little wonder that so many wistful songs have been penned over the years about France's capital, Paris. What city experiences could be more seductive than sitting in the gardens of Notre-Dame beneath the drifting cherry blossom, strolling along the riverside quais on a summer evening, sipping coffee and cognac in the early hours to the sound of the blues, or exploring the ancient alleyways and cobbled lanes of the Latin Quarter and Montmartre? Paris has no problem living up to the painted images and movie myths with which we're all familiar.
Nor does Paris falter in its reputation as a great hive of artistic and intellectual activity. World-class art collections at the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay, as well as the great many smaller museums devoted to individual artists and collectors, underscore an impressive roster of talents linked to the city, including Delacroix, Ingres, Seurat, Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso, Braque and Gris, to name but a few. The newly reopened Pompidou Centre embodies a cultural attitude that both proclaims Parisian cleverness and invites you to share in it. And it is only one of many grand and ground-breaking modern buildings - the new Bibliothèque Nationale, the Institut du Monde Arabe, among others - that assert modern architecture and design.
In fact, the whole city is something of a work of art. Two thousand years of shaping and reshaping have resulted in monumental buildings, sweeping avenues, grand esplanades and bridges. Many of its older buildings have survived intact, spared the ravages of flood and fire and saved from Hitler's intended destruction. Moreover, they survive with a sense of continuity and homogeneity, as new sits comfortably against a backdrop of old - the glass Pyramid against the grand fortress of the Louvre, the Column of Liberty against the Opera Bastille. Time has acted as judge, as buildings once swathed in controversy - the Eiffel Tower, the Sacre-Cur, the Pompidou Centre - have in their turn become symbols of the city. Yet for all the tremendous pomp and magnificence of its monuments, Paris operates on a very human scale, with exquisite, secretive little nooks tucked away from the Grands Boulevards and very definite little communities revolving around games of boules and the local boulangerie and café.

paris fun.......2004-03-08
of these, after the trip, i must say that let's go paris was the most helpful with copious useful maps and tips, in addition to accurate and abundant recommendations on housing, dining and entertainment. frommers was the second most useful in planning and understanding the city.
although i thought that the rough guide would be beneficial, the maps were limited in detail and annotation. also, dining etc was not listed by arrondissements which made searching very difficult.
fodors was nice, but not particularly useful for the moderate income traveler compared to the others. frommers paris i briefly reviewed but found much less useful than the other frommers guide.
My other favorite Paris guidebook.......2001-10-06
If I Could Only Buy One Guide Book for a Trip to Paris.......2001-09-05
This book stands out as the best for my demographic, the professional age 20 - 40 crowd.
The book stands above other travel books particularly in its hotel, bar, club and restaurant recommendations and is worthwhile for these alone. It also provides some fantastic historical insight into Paris, particularly with regards to 20th century Parisian history.
It is printed on a pulpy paper and is very light, something to keep in mind if you are just packing a single bag and taking off to Paris for the weekend.
The Best Compact Guide to Paris.......2001-04-11
If - unlike me - you only plan to buy one book for your trip, make it this one.
