Product Description
Of the world's 4,000 to 4,500 mammal species, about 1,100 occur in Africa. In this updated and revised edition of Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, authors Chris and Tilde Stuart concentrate on the more visible and easily distinguished larger mammal species, plus some of the more frequently seen smaller mammals. In all, over 400 color photographs, combined with concise, pertinent information highlighting the diagnostic features of each species, provide a comprehensive source of information on each mammal. The latest information has been incorporated and the distribution maps have been revised to reflect the most up-to-date habitat and distribution patterns for each species. A new feature is the inclusion of the mammals' skulls, grouped together at the back of the book. To aid the reader, color-coding and symbols indicating the habitat and activity period serve as a quick reference to the various mammal groups.

Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa.......2000-05-03
I bought this book a long time ago when it was first published because I was looking for some information on primates and carnivores of Africa. When I found this book I wasn't disappointed! There are full colour, clear pictures on every page on primates, hoofed mammals, the elephant, carnivores, the aardvark, hyraxes, pangolins, rabbits and hares and the rodents. The carnivore section is the best but they all show original photographs and accounts with distribution, status, behaviour, a map and breeding habits of each animal or a group of them. Every picture has a caption saying where the photo was taken or a special feature of that mammal that makes it different from any other. There are no negative comments I can make on this book because it is clear, informative and with lots of pictures which can help your studies whether you're going to Africa or not!

A pretty good guide to the animals.......1997-04-19
This handy little volume is one of three things you should definitely have knocking around loose inside your Land Cruiser on safari. The other two, of course, are the well-stocked drink cooler and Lady Jane. Yes, gin-and-tonic DOES help with malaria, and has far fewer side effects than Larium. In any case, the book is organized in a reasonable way, by families, so that the cats are together in the same section of text and not, for example, strewn about amid elephants and impalas. Thus animals are fairly easy to find even without recourse to the (adequate) index, which lists the page on which descriptive text appears as well as the page on which the animal is illustrated. The illustrations are nicely rendered watercolors that are perhaps less vivid than high-quality photographs might be, but at least show idealized animals that lack any confusing idiosyncracies sometimes seen of individual photographed animals. Certain features of the book are clearly out of date, such as the names of the more recent African countries; Lady Jane was befuddled by a country named Rhodesia occupying the territory of Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, she has been imbibing (in an absolutely out-of-character manner) an American abomination called kamikazes, so she is a trifle under the weather. Another difficulty is that animals that presently are desperately endangered, such as the bongo, were not described as such back in the '70s when most of the text was evidently written. But the written descriptions of the animals are excellent, and most handy in the field, especially when you can find both the text description and the illustration, putting fingers in the book to mark the place of each, and then looking back and forth from text to picture to animal and back again, etc. It is a lot easier than it sounds, even when the Land Cruiser is in one of its bouncier modes. Or ditto Lady Jane

Tahiti & South Seas Tour Book.......2007-09-21
Excellent book to have with you as you tour the islands of the South Seas.
This Book is ALL YOU NEED.......2007-04-11
My husband and I travelled to Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea and Bora Bora. This book was fantastic! I usually only use Lonely Planet tour books when we travel - but I have to say this book was 5 times better than the Lonely Planet Tahiti book! Every island we went to this book directed us to little travelled - non touristy places and we feel we really got to know the islands! I highly reccommend it!
Well written and informative.......2007-01-04
I chose this book sight unseen because it included the Marquesas which weren't mentioned in the descriptions of most other guides. I cruised the islands on the Tahitian Princess. For each island stop this book was accurate. I followed several tips that maximized the onshore experience.
Most of the islands in French Polynesia are not heavily developed or populated. If you are thinking about a land based vacation I recommend this book because the description of each island and its facilities should give you a feeling of whether you will enjoy your vacation.
The only book we used..........2001-08-20
We bought 3 books and always seemed to rely on this one. Mr Kay gives great info on restaurants and hidden lodgings, which are the 2 most important topics for us. We actually stayed in one place that he labeled "hidden" and he was right! We could not find the entrance and when we did they were not open to the public, but they decided to let us stay and we were the only guests for a week. No other guide book listed this hidden lodging. Mr. Kay has a more personal approach and gives great descriptions, which the other guide books lack. And as far as not giving exact prices, it's useless to do so as these things change so much anyway. All you need to know is this: you stay in a big hotel where all the other tourists stay you will pay big money for not so much, if you venture out to where the real people live, you pay less and get better service, food, and memories.
Hidden Tahiti: Not all that hidden.......2001-07-18
As a two time, three island visitor to the islands of Tahiti, I did not find this book helpful because it lacks prices and it focuses on upscale lodging/food. On both trips, I've found David Stanley's TAHITI (by Moon Pub.) to be the BEST guide, providing you purchase the most recent edition, as Tahiti's hotels change with the seasons. David Stanley's guides are full of detailed maps, reviews of hikes, beaches, accomodations (from hostels to resorts), food... His advice has never steered us wrong! We owe some great travel experiences to his guide book; TAHITI by D. Stanley is the only one that you will need.

V is for Very informational.......2006-07-01
World war two: FACINATING! This book has alot of ups, ups, ups- which is the bad thing, for you have to go down sometime. This book went up for the information that it supplied, and jumped a little higher for the variables of what would happen, the different people they wrote about, and basically ten times the eiffel tower for the many many details that it supplied.
Though all the good things happened and brought the balloon near to the moon, it slowly drfted downward as the book repeated things, and completly ran out of air at the ending.
It is a book about the world war two and is a very good study guide for anyone learning about it.
Not fun but learn somthing new.......2005-03-09
This book is about the World War II and it tells what the people did and what they said after the war. It tells the history in America. I learned a lot from this book and I never really knew what the World War was like. I also learned that President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. I never knew that the people of America collected tires for war vehicles. I would give this book 3 stars because it only talked about the war and how the people survived in America. I didn't like this book because it talks about feelings. This book only talked about one happy thing. That was when the war was over and the people were shouting and celebrating. The rest of this book is all about sad things because it is about the war.
Amazon.com
The author does not pretend that this is the definitive chronicle of World War II. Yet this remarkable compilation of photographs and memorabilia will bring back vivid memories of the era for those who lived through it, and--better yet--make it intensely real for those who did not experience it firsthand. Stan Cohen clearly remembers it all: victory gardens; scrap drives; air raid drills; women welders and drill press workers; children in gas masks; Fiorello La Guardia and the Civilian Defense Corps. There's even a photo of Joe Cobb of Our Gang comedies working on a B-52 bomber.

The American Homefront During WWII.......2006-07-28
Aside from the stories my parents told me, this book is probably the closest I'll ever get to experiencing life in America during the early 1940's.
It's all here: the music, newspaper headlines, letters home, children's toys, wartime propaganda (including a "Jap Primer"!), rationing, fashions, transportation, movies, and loads and loads of photographs! I also like the fact that it begins with those years before the United States' involvement in the war, and the public's reactions and opinions of the European carnage pre-December 7th, 1941.
This is not a disjointed collection of words and pictures thrown together incohesively, but a book that re-creates in all its *glory* the lives and times of our parents and grandparents written by one who was there.
During dinnertime on many occasions my mother will tell my children vignettes of her youth during the war, how she and her friends used to collect scraps of metal and rubber, how they would save the grease from meat, of watching the latest war news during movie previews at the show, and of seeing the local boys off to fight in a far off land. And everything she would say is right here in even greater detail in this 'encyclopedia' of the World War II homefront.
It's this sort of a book that is needed to be in our educational system - not the politically correct pap written by opinionated saps being shoved down our children's throats today. THIS is how it was.
A truly awesome book.
A WWII SCRAPBOOK.......2004-03-01
This is a book that every Rosie the Riveter or decendant thereof should own. How easy it is to imagine life during WWII when immersed in the photo library and artifact archive Stan Cohen presents! The author clearly demonstrates a single-minded labor of love to preserve the overall personal story of this critical and singular period in American history. Another Amazon review complained about the somewhat unprofessional presentation of the materials in the book but this is exactly why I love it. It's like the very scrapbooks that the WWII generation used to put together - photos, matchbooks, dance cards, postcards, badges, sheetmusic, unusual war front news stories, posters, etc. The materials are organized in either topical or chronological chapters and thoroughly annotated. It's like finding the nation's wartime history in old box in the attic. The compendium brings history to life through the extraordinariness of the everyday objects and photos of homefront life.
The WWII U.S. Home Front is Brought to Life! A True Winner!.......2003-12-15
This is an absolutely great book! For those of us who had the incomparable experience of living in WWII wartime America, each page of this remarkable book will cause a jolt.
It's all there...with no punches pulled. The Government propaganda machine cranked out media that was aimed at having us hate our Axis enemies. (The same Germany, Italy and Japan that are our friends today.) Yes, the great photos and text cover it all....air raid drills and shelters, Victory Gardens, rationing, civil defense, draft boards, relocation of Japanese, the war plants and manpower. It was a time that the equal opportunity movements for women, African-Americans and the handicapped started to gain steam.
World War II brought us out of the Depression, and author Stan Cohen depicts how a sleeping America became an unmatched industrial machine because determination of its WWII work force. Nor does he neglect technologies that were developed in the home front. The computer, television and a multitude of other products were invented or advanced during this period.
V for Victory has 408 pages. Each page is remarkable.
I recommend this book highly.

A complete visual record of Home Front USA.......2002-01-06
The major fault with this book is its complete lack of design. With hundreds of photos and graphic material it should have been presented in a much more imaginative way.
However I found it a fascinating visual record of the war years, though at times it does get a bit overwhelming, do I really need to look at over fifty photos of scrap drives? The text is basically captions and some longer essays. There really should have been an index as well, this is the sort of book readers dip into and refer back to.
As well as the photos there is plenty of printed ephemera and these were the items that intriqued me most. The chapter on Food for Victory has a seed packet, recipe books, posters, a cover to a home canning book, a lunch bag, a packet of waxed paper, the front of a newspaper produced by Kraft cheese, a Victory garden book cover and photos of folk digging their gardens.
A lot of everyday printed items are shown in a similar book, 'Home Front America' by Robert Heide and John Gilman, with a lot more text than 'V for Victory' it covers the same years from the viewpoint of popular culture.
NOSTALGIC REMINISCENCE.......1997-12-10
We are writing a journal of the "Old Days" for our children and grandchildren. We needed our memory refreshed on WWII rationing and other patriotic actions. Stan Cohen had compiled just what we needed. (Note: Amazing how "politically incorrect" we were in those days!!!)

I have used the liturgical clip art books from Liturgical Press for more than ten years. They are fabulous, clear, and cover a broad range of seasonal liturgical needs. The art items are presented in a variety of combinations and sizes, so if you don't have a copier that reduces, it helps. These volumes and also those by Placid Stuckenschneider are among th best any where commercially available.

This 330-page tome contains seven essays and more than 300 illustrations. The catalog of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, it is not a history of 20th-century architecture, per se. But there is enough information, both visual and verbal, to ground any thoroughgoing reader in the architectural theory of the century. All the classics are covered: the Chrysler building; Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater; Bauhaus buildings; world's fair pavilions, including Moshe Safdie's Habitat '67; Saarinen's sweeping rooflines; Sutemi Horiguchi's measured modernism; the Sydney Opera House; Pompidou Center in Paris; and hundreds of other iconic images.
Some of the written material lacks the crisp, clean style of the architecture, but the book is brainy and provocative, and some of the essays are brilliant. French architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen, a specialist on the international impact of modernism and "Americanism," contributed a multifaceted chapter in which he analyses urban architecture, urban planning, political forces fomenting or forbidding change, new towns, the vertical city and its effects on individualism, and more.
The pictures are often small but always clear, many in color, including plans, paintings and drawings, maps, and movie stills. --Peggy Moorman

Praying with pictures.......2007-09-07
This book and its companion volumes (Years B and C) are among the best clip art I have EVER seen. They are arranged in liturgical year chronology which makes things easy to find for those who are preparing worship programs. I have used this material in five different churches since 1994 -- shortly after it was first printed. The congregations have been blessed (as have I) to have beautiful drawings for the front of each worship cover, as well as for newsletters and special mailings.
The cost of the full three-year cycle ($95.00) is worth every penny. I have not spent another thing on worship covers in 13 years.
The only caveat for protestant congregations is that LTP is a Catholic publishing house and the three year cycle is based on the RC lections. In almost all instances, the gospel lesson is the same as that in the Revised Common Lectionary. My only difficulty has been sometimes finding an appropriate picture when I am preaching on Hebrew scripture, but usually a reference to my lectionary table will give me other options from another Sunday.
The beautiful graphics that begin each section of the liturgical year are, themselves, worth using for bulletin boards, special prayer booklets, home worship brochures. I even have a parishioner who adapted one of the designs for a paper parament set that she used with her Sunday school class.
If you are clergy or on a worship team that is concerned with visuals for Sunday worship, do yourself a favor and get all three books.
