Sharp, wise and practical.......2000-05-25
I've used this book both as a manager, working with individuals and my work team, and also as a consultant and facilitator working with client groups. It is a fantastic resource for the following reasons: 1. it has a very sound foundational model that is built on trust, organisational learning principles and action research; 2. it has an excellent blend of theory and practice, with heaps of case studies, anecdotes and wisdom acquired through experience; 3. it has a lot of really useful tools, reasources, survey instruments and so on - excellent stuff that helps you apply the ideas easily and straight away; 4. it has a lot of humanity, compassion and profound thought about what it means to be an individual working in a complex, dynamic organisation of today; 5. the ideas in it are built on values and ethics, an unusual, but welcome, approach to me; 6. what it advocates is practical, achieveable and realistic - it's not touchy-feely waffle, it is sound advice and tested approaches. Good on you cobbers!

Not only are they some of the world's most influential women, their life lessons are now revealed in the latest book by Pat Williams. True womanhood through trials........2006-06-09
I have gleaned much inspiration and insight from this priceless repository of equally priceless experiences and wisdom of all the women described in this book. After surviving a stroke and brain surgery in the midst of having and rearing my 3 still young children while maintaining pursuit of my career goals, this book further reinforces a truth that has fueled my perseverance during these tempestuous years of my youth: "Impossible is Nothing!" (Quote by the Great Muhammad Ali)

Great Inspiratonal Book.......2005-07-13
I really enjoyed reading the book and not only were the stories very interesting but also very inspirational. I got a chance to meet the actual writer Michael Mink and I greatly enjoyed his view of the ladies he wrote about and some of the behind the story of writing the book. I encourage everone to read this book
A great read even if you know the stories already.......2004-10-04
The book spine is cheap and separates some from the pages (without the pages falling out) - the physical quality of the book isn't among the best in the bookstore, but what's inside was surprisingly great--much better than I could have expected from the outside. Even if you know the stories of these women already, it's still great reading!, which amazed me.
Give him a PAT on the back..........2003-12-11
I cant say enough about this book. I, being a woman, have always thought of taking on a project of this nature. However, Pat Williams beat me to the punch. It tickles me to see an idea I often thought about in such a splendid format. Any woman who feels the need to improve on their quality of life must read this book. You can be sure to gain a new perspective on living life as a women. The content of the book provides the reader with twenty life lessons that will continue to guide you throughtout your life. A great read for any female regardless of race or wealth. In addition, any of you fellas out there who are interested in females, if you have ever wanted to learn what makes us tick, read this book.
Motivational and Inspirational.......2003-12-11
My life was in shambles. I had no direction and I was definately no women of influece. One day I stumbled upon one of Pat Williams great pieces of literature, how to be like women of influence. It changed my life.

Book Description
Offering a lighthearted look at language, this book shows, rather than explains, the concept of nouns. Young readers are introduced to basic word groups through rhyming verse and illustrations of comical cartoon cats. Brimming with lively examples, this book proves that it's fun to learn grammar! Nouns are printed in color for easy identification, and the playful rhymes and illustrations combine to bring key words into focus. A word-search game at the end encourages readers to apply what they've learned.
Customer Reviews:
Can't recommend highly enough.......2007-01-08
This book taught my 4 year old what nouns were. I read it for her older brother, but they both picked up on the concept. The rhymes are silly, so it keeps their attention, and they really get it by the end of the book.
I also recommend the others in the series - To Root, To Toot, To Parachute:What is a Verb?; Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an Adjective? We don't have the latest ones, but I'm sure they're just as good.
After reading the other reviews, I want to check out other series that this author has done.
Great.......2005-07-19
This book was great. It was too young for my 8yr old but just right for the 6yr old.
A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink: What Is a Noun?.......2004-12-12
My five year old daughter loves this book! Prosmitsky's colorful illustrations make it so much more fun learning the parts of speech. My daughter adores the illustrator's goofy pillow-like cats!
All Primary Teachers Could Use This!.......2000-10-26
As a teacher of third graders, I've used this book and "Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an Adjective" to teach and delight my students, and to take some of the tedium out of parts of speech. Within a day or so of introducing these books, all 27 of my group knew the difference between the major parts of speech. We found out that Mr. Cleary has a website, and I printed out some word-building worksheets off it for free, and a took away a couple of suggestions on how integrate teaching nouns with a fun art project, called the noun quilt, in which each letter of the alphabet has a noun, as in B, BOOT, C, CAT and the students draw the item and eventually it becomes this big old paper quilt full of nouns. His publisher assures me that TO ROOT, TO TOOT, TO PARACHUTE: WHAT IS A VERB? will be in soon, and it's a no-brainer that I'll get that as well.
A Mink, A Fink, A Skating Rink: What is a Noun?.......2000-05-22
Funny, silly, but slyly (if that's a word) educational, A Mink A Fink A Skating Rink: What is a Noun? will do for grammar what "Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue in Fourteen-hundred ninety-two" did for social studies. Kids can't help but remember which part of speech a word is because of the clever rhymes. My second graders find the illustrations wonderful as well. Cleary's first series includes great teaching tools like "Jamaica Sandwich?", which is really a 4th-5th grade combination Geography/English lesson.
Book Description
With her analysis of the thirty-year campaign to reform and ultimately to end welfare, Gwendolyn Mink levels a searing indictment of anti-welfare politicians' assault on poor mothers. She charges that the basic elements of the new welfare policy subordinate poor single mothers in a separate system of law. Mink points to the racial, class, and gender biases of both liberals and conservatives to explain the odd but sturdy consensus behind welfare reforms that force the poor single mother to relinquish basic rights and compel her to find economic security in work outside the home.
Mink explores how and why we should cure the unique inequality of poor single mothers by reorienting the emphasis of welfare policy away from regulating mothers to rewarding the work they do. Every mother is a working mother, the bumper sticker proclaims, but the work mothers do pays no wages. Mink argues that women's equality depends on economic support for caregivers' work.
Welfare's End challenges the ways in which policymakers define the problem they seek to cure. While legislators assume that something is wrong with poor single mothers, Mink insists that something is wrong with a system that invades their rights and negates their work. Showing how welfare reform harms women, Mink invites the design of policies to promote gender justice.
Customer Reviews:
Not a good case against welfare reform.......1999-06-05
Seizing the polemic language of the welfare "reform"ers, Mink uses this same crude style in trying to oppose any type of reform. Was the welfare system in America not working too well? Yes. Was it in need of reform? Yes. Did the 1996 effort by Clinton and the Republicans help remove some of the problems? Yes. The welfare advocates do not recognize any of these facts. They simply point out the false stereotypes employed by the anti-welfare crowd and the problems of this law, which forces women to work rather than care for their kids. Mink, like many other self-styled feminists, does not care for the moral groundings of true feminism or of the original welfare legislation. Instead, she seems to advocate a libertine lifestyle wherein rights take precedence over responsibilities. This kind of polemical work only works when it falls back on statistics - the rest of the time it fails to make a convincing case against a terribly flawed "reform" policy that is simple to refute. Gary Bryner's "Politics and Public Morality" is a much better assessment of this legislation and much more highly recommended by this reader.
a thorough look at the real "welfare" system.......1998-05-19
Mink addresses the topic in a small but powerful volume, analyzing the so-called welfare system as it truly is; an intentional labyrinthian trap, designed to keep vulnerable members of society, men, as well as women and children in a state of economic siege.

This book changed my life!!!.......2004-04-05
As a former leader of the notorious biker gang, Satan's Little Elves, I used to live a life sewn together with the black thread of evil. Whether it was selling crack cocaine to retarded kids or taking more toothpicks than I needed from the men's restroom at Denny's, I was headed on the road to Nowhere - quick!!!
Then one day, knowing my secret pension for herbal tea, Snake Vomit, a buddy of mine, gave me this book to read. I cut my hippy hairdo and enrolled in Christian Military school. I have since become a roadie, following Twila Paris across the Good Ol' US of A and terrorizing members of the Green Party.
Rock on brothers!!!

This title in the Modern Masters series focuses on the work of Joan Miro, one of the painters most often associated with surrealism. Miro studied art in his native Barcelona before joining the Paris art scene in the 1920s. Fantasy, dreams, and myths played an important role in Miro's early works, many of which are included in the more than 70 full-color reproductions of paintings, sculptures, and tapestries in this collection. This is a fine introduction to the monumental works of one of the foremost artists of the 20th century.

Life-Changing!.......2007-10-17
My boyfriend gave me this book for Christmas several years ago and it inspired me to act on my long-time dream of opening my own boutique. Each time I re-read this book, I'm reminded why I love vintage fashion and my new business!
Alison's adventures are a scream! .......2007-03-28
This is one of those books I just stumbled across and wasn't sure whether or not to pick it up. After reading just a few pages I was hooked. Alison's adventures in the vintage clothing trade are fearless, funny and totally addictive. Her shopping excursions are a scream -- even when she's hunting down replacement "barn doors" (back doors to her van that were stolen) in the most unlikely places. The author obviously enjoys life to the fullest and generously shares the realities of making a new life for herself far, far from her original course. Go Alison! And give us a sequel while you're at it.
Appreciate Vintage More..........2006-11-17
After reading this book, I look at vintage with a new eye. I loved reading about her adventures with modeling to running her own business. Couldn't put this book down and definetly recommend it to others!
Another okay read.......2006-10-30
Okay "Alligators, old Mink and new money." by Alison Houtte is one of those books that get the reader's attention by the title. This book tells the story of Alison Houtte a former model who opens a vintage shop, while it was cute it wasn't much more and only took me a day to read it.
Not what I expected...........2006-10-13
I loved the title of this book! While there is good information about vintage clothing, I feel there is too much emphasis on the author's personal life. I loved the stories about her family, but didn't care so much to read about her love life or the nuts and bolts of her modeling career. I had hoped for more of a primer on how to shop wisely for vintage, as it seems to be a wonderful way to save money.

Presented in encyclopedia format, with articles ranging from "Abolitionist Movement" to "YWCA," this hefty book provides a vast amount of material, both factual and interpretive. The editors, which include such icons as Gloria Steinem and the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation Wilma Mankiller, give a broad overview of issues relevant to feminist history and present material that will further debates about the role played by women in American history. The Reader's Companion offers a strongly feminist interpretation, and some would no doubt argue that many of the pieces are not so much history as arguments for social reform. That said, the reference's nearly exhaustive coverage (there are more than 400 articles) makes the book a valuable resource.
Book Description
The most inclusive book to date on U.S. women's collective history! A landmark work, The Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History, gathers together more than 400 articles to offer a diverse, rich, and often neglected panorama of the nation's past. Written by more than 300 contributors, drawn from various areas of expertise, these narrative and interpretive entries "effectively cover five centuries of women's experiences" (Bloomsbury Review). Here are articles on cowgirls and child care, on the daily lives of single women and the changing notions of motherhood, on the artistic contributions of women of color and the history of Jewish feminism. Wide-ranging in scope and wonderfully accessible, this unique resource reexamines with fresh clarity and brio the issues and concerns that color the lives of all women. Articles and their contributors include: African American Women, Darlene Clark Hine; Cult of Domesticity, Carroll Smith-Rosenberg; Fashion and Style, Lynn Yaeger; Jazz and Blues, Daphne Duval Harrison; Lesbians, Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy; Native American Cultures, Clara Sue Kidwell; Picture Brides, Judy Yung; Salem Witchcraft Trials, Mary Beth Norton; Vietnam Era, Sara M. Evans.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful reading and browsing.......2000-05-19
Don't be discouraged by the awesome title of "Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History." I found this book deeply engaging. Each article told me something I didn't know. I kept the book by my night-table, and dipped into it before I went to sleep. The editors have not imposed a deadly uniformity on the entries, but have encouraged a wide and diverse set of approaches. From the TWO articles, with different perspectives, on "feminism and feminisms" (followed by 17 -- I think -- different specific feminisms) to the story of Bessie Coleman under "Aviation" -- this book gives you a magnificent insight into women's history in the U.S.

A Great Little Stat Book.......2002-10-18
I've taught an undergraduate statistics class in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida for a few years and found that this book works the best. Even students who tell me they have high math anxiety have enjoyed the text because it explains complex things in a simple and easy to understand way.
from an instructor.......2000-07-31
I have been taking and teaching statistical concepts for almost 10 years now and have never found a better, more concise intro to modern statistics. I sugggest that anyone trying to learn statistics have a copy of this valuable text.
The Best self help book on statistical concepts.......1997-10-20
Although this is an intro text, it is a programming text that trains the reader to comprehend basic statistical concepts. This is especially important if the users "think" they have a "math" problem. It clearly explains in a step by step fashion "how to do it".
