Customer Reviews:
the operative word is lonely..........2003-01-12
I am usually a fan of Lonely Planet, but having just returned from Grand Bahama, I would not recommend this guide. Published in 2001, which means it was researched before that, it is quite out of date given the tough post 9/11 economy. Examples: Running Mon Resort- closed. Hydroflora gardens- closed. Rand Nature Center- closed. Many retailers- closed, moved, renamed, etc. Restaurant prices - way out of date.
Some of this is just irritating, but some is more dangerous- eg. LP suggests that, to get to Water Cay you drive the 'dirt road' to the 'north dock' and hire a boat from a local. Do it their way, and you may be a lot lonelier than you bargained for: That dirt road takes 45 minutes on a rutted logging road, lots of forks, no signs, and there is no dock- just a narrow ramp and a couple abandoned cars. High tide there swamps a good 2-300 yards of the shoreline. Time to do a new edition, guys!
I thought the maps provided were inadequate. For some reason, LP takes the trouble to make a map of Downtown Freeport with some of the restaurants (including a Burger King!?!) and attractions located and numbered, but they don't put the map number with the review! Add that to the Bahamian's indifference to street address numbers, street signs.
Conclusion: Not up to LP's usual standards. Though useful for background information, be prepared to check everything by phone or on the web before you depart. Or skip the guide and start with the web...
I liked this book.......2001-03-02
This is one of the best travel guides that I have read. I thought the political information about the Bahamas was really interesting. Just the level of detail--which is probably too much if you're just cruising to Nassau--but it really explains a lot about why things are the way they are in the Bahamas. I dont really use the Lonely Planet guides while on vacation because you dont need that much information. However they really help a lot when you are reasearching a destination.
Five Stars??? Well, I don't know about that........1999-09-18
Found the book useful as a starting point. Complete, thorough. Interesting tidbits. But when it came down to actually scheduling trips and tickets, I found out that most of the information was already out of date.
BahamasAir wasn't familiar with the AirPass, so I had to fax them the section where the author cattily railed on them. All they had to say was "interesting."
The suggested weekend and week trips were a little sketchy as well. In fact, when I had acutally arrived, I never used the book because of the terrific tourist infrastructure already in place.
Overall, I felt the author was a little harsh on his take with Bahamian culture, keeping a good sense of humor but almost crossing the line of offensive in some places.
People should remember that these tour books are a subjective peephole into their place of destination, and should always keep an open mind to discover for themselves.
I had a great time there.
Budget, coverage basic, but gives days, times-real use info........1999-06-08
Excellent maps. More budget minded then most guide books. Gives actual prices for hotels, not just $ signs. Easy to read, and honest evaluations. Gives ideas of ways to cut costs. Full coverage of all islands, including out islands. Complement with one other guide and you'll be complete. Site coverages basic, but real use information such as days, times, how to get there.
Great! A truly in-depth guide.......1999-06-06
This guide actually covers the out islands of the Bahamas with detailed coverage. The guide has most every place in the Bahamas covered down to the grains of the sandy beaches.
Book Description
Written by a Romani (gypsy), this introduction to Roma life, health, food, culture, and society provides an insightful look at this despised by mysterious minority originating in India. Extensively illustrated, it looks at the people, their history since leaving India 1,000 years ago, and their rejection and exclusion from society in the countries where they settled. It offers candid advice on rejecting prejudices and stereotypes and getting to know the Roma as individuals, with short biographies of Roma in many different walks of life.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......2006-10-07
This modest 180-page book offers a tremendous introduction to the Romani people, for any and all of Rom descent, as well as those who are simply sympathetic observers.
Published by the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the book adds to the Interface Collection (published in 12 languages), developed by the Centre for Gypsy Research at Paris' Universite Rene Descartes, with support from other European organizations.
In addition to a brief introduction, the volume includes 14 chapters covering everything from the history of the Rom people and their 500-year enslavement in the heart of Europe to the bigoted reactions of Europeans, the Rom experience during the Holocaust and current-day anti-Rom hatred.
The book also discuses the Rom people's origins in the Indian subcontinent (from which they were transported as slaves by the Muslim conquerors), Rom cuisine and health practices, contributions of famed Roma (including guitarist Django Reinhardt, actress Rita Hayworth and actor Freddie Prinze) and the Rom language.
Also included are an impressive appendix, with a brief explanation of Romani grammar, a bibliography of recommended Internet, printed and organizational sources, a listing of the author's more than 150 references and a complete index.
One of the most useful and enlightening of the educational chapters is that on appropriate interactions with Romani people. It's well past time that scholars addressed the almost universally held (and highly unacceptable) attitudes towards the Rom, and provided remedies.
All in all, this is a superb book.

a good introduction to Gypsies 101.......2005-06-04
Likely Gypsies are one race that has been stereotype, maybe often without real thought. Such as the "stolen by the Gypsies..." I often heard that when I was growing up, but never stopped to see it for what it is - a perpetuating of a myth. Well, this book gives you a good start at shattering these pre-set images that are connected to the Gypsies. Written by a man of Gypsy blood, he set out to break these prejudices. He gears this book for schoolteachers, social workers, physicians or other walks of life that comes in contact daily with those of Gypsy origins, with eye to making you see them as the diverse people they are. He gives you a light introduction to Gypsy life and customs, challenges the narrow minds and misconceptions, replacing them with clear-cut, well written
information designed to enlighten and foster tolerance between the Romani and the gadze.
As one who adores my Scottish heritage, I have a great interest in the lore and ethnic heritage of different races. This book does a lot to answer questions and get you started on the road to leaning more about the Romani people.
Very interesting reading.
I recommend this to everyone.......2004-04-29
I just recently read this book, and I think it is very good, especially for those of non-Rom blood who would like some basic information. The author is himself Rom, so this is not written "about" Gypsies, but actually by one. I was very glad to see that, and was the reason that I picked it up in the first place. The book doesn't (and can't) go into very much detail about particular cultural practices, etc, and that was my only disappointment with it.
Hancock Is a Good Example that PhD's Do Not Matter.......2003-07-18
Anyway, I would like to tell you something else. I just received my papers. I hope you remember my and your comments about Hancock's "Romaivi." I will use Latin letters here for the sake of legibility. To refresh your memory, according to Hancock, the Byzantines called themselves "Romaivi" - which is absurd. The ancient Greek "Romaioi" (pronounced [ro'ma'yo'i], today [ro'me'i]) is the plural of Romaios ([ro'ma'yos], today [ro'me'os]) which means "a male Roman person" and comes from the Greek (or Hellenic, if you prefer) word for Rome - "Roma." The Byzantines called themselves Romans - that is, "Romaioi" and not "Romaivi." To distinguish between Romans and Byzantines, in Modern Greek the word "latinikos" (Latin) is broadly used to define "Roman" as an adjective. I am all too well aware of everything you commented about the origin of the word "Rumelia" and do not need to consult Dr. Erdinc or anyone about the matter. It indeed comes from those "Romaios" and "Roma" - not from "Romaivi" or any such nonsense of a word. The invented word "Romaivi" cited by Hancock, like the many other mistakes he makes in an attempt to show knowledge in everything, ruins his otherwise very informative and interesting book, thus (maybe undeservedly) casting a shadow of doubt on the other more "central" points that he makes. Therefore, I would suggest to you in good faith not to use this edition of his book or use it only with extreme caution. That is the point I wanted to make.
A must-have.......2003-04-05
This is a must-read book for anyone who is interested in not only the Romani people but also in the roles they have played in history. So much of their story is not known or not understood and this book deals with it in such an honest and straight forward way. It discusses and tackles the issues faced by the Romani people but does it in a way that doesn't point fingers or make excuses. Of the few books that actually deal with this topic, most of them are slanted to one side or the other. Hancock's book gives out the informattion for anyone who wants to read it. His personal insight is so helpful, as most of the other authors writing on this topic are non-Romani. This is such an important book, especially for someone interested in specific genres of history like the Holocaust or Middle Ages that it should definitely be on recommended reading lists. Of course you don't need to be a historian just to find this book insightful and interesting. I think everyone should read this book.
Customer Reviews:
An exceptionally valuable history.......2006-01-14
A thousand years ago a group of people, the Romani, were driven out of northern India by invaders: they became world nomads, adapting to local culture and customs but always moving - eventually creating their own unique culture. The Romani authors explain these 'gypsy' peoples, why 'gypsy' is a scornful name for them, and they explore their heritage and traditions. Little is written about these peoples for this age grade of 2-4, making for an exceptionally valuable history.
Book Description
Written in an accessible and jargon-free style, The Roma Cafe is an interdisciplinary analysis of the plight of the Roma in Central and Eastern Europe, a region where the Roma people have been particularly savagely affected by the economic transitions after 1989. Already marginal, they have experienced intense hardship with the collapse of any remaining welfare state support.
The Roma have also suffered hugely from the rise in nationalism and racism in Eastern Europe. With many leaving the region because of repression, the old prejudices against the Roma have then resurfaced in the press and elsewhere in the countries they have fled to in Western Europe.
Istvan Pogany sets the record straight for this much maligned and misunderstood minority. The Roma Cafe acts as both a physical reality and a metaphor: the plight of Europe's gypsy populations, after the holocaust and the tragedies of Yugoslavia, makes the acceptance and celebration of difference even more important in modern multicultural nations.

Companion veggie gardening.......2007-01-10
I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.
More about "Other Secrets" than "Companion Planting".......2001-10-19
I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.
Companion planting at its finest.......2000-05-25
Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

The Art of Flowers: A Celebration of Botanical Illustration, Its Masters and Methods

Book Description
French flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté is regarded as one of the best of the botanical illustrators in the tradition of aristocratic patronage stretching back to the Renaissance. Between 1817 and 1824 he completed the three volumes of ³Les Roses,² his most celebrated work. This pocket-book includes 166 exquisitely reproduced plates and sports a new design and look in a bit of a departure from the jumbo volume of the same title.
Customer Reviews:
Flowers of Chateau Malmaison.......2003-11-18
I read about Redoute while researching the history of Chateau Malmaison. Malmaison is a small property in Moulis, which is in the Medoc region of Bordeaux in France. Yes, Chateau Malmaison makes wine... their 2000 vintage is fabulous, and worth looking for.
But anyway, Josephine de Beauharnais purchased Malmaison in 1799 for her and Napolean, and in 1800-1802, Malmaison (together with the Tuileries) was the seat of government.
Josephine planted and expanded the rose gardens of the Chateau, and was very interested in natural science. She commissioned Redoute to paint the rose garden of Malmaison (and their lilies, too).
If Redoute's work is interesting to you, you may want to research a little bit about Empress Josephine and Chateau Malmaison. At the very least, consider buying a bottle of 2000 Chateau Malmaison wine... and browse this book in a few years over a glass or two. That would be the next best thing to visiting the rose garden in person.
Exquisite!.......2002-08-09
Pierre-Joseph Redoute was the Audubon of flowers--particularly roses and lilies. His artwork is stunning and he depicts the various varieties of roses in immaculate detail. An absolutely gorgeous book, published by Taschen and printed in Italy, my version is about 5"X 8" page size and the ISBN number is 3-8228-1356-7 (English version).
For the lover of roses, any illustrated book by Pierre-Joseph Redoute will be a treasure to admire for years.
