Book Description
Originally published in 1907, Birds Every Child Should Know is a collection of storylike descriptions of more than one hundred birds commonly found in the United States. Neltje Blanchan's detailed descriptions of birds--their physical attributes, calls, nesting and mating habits, and other behaviors--are nothing less than enchanting, and some read almost like fairy tales. Take for instance the mockingbird's call: "when the moonlight sheds a silvery radiance about every sleeping creature, the mockingbird sings to his mate such delicious music as only the European nightingale can rival. Perhaps the stillness of the hour, the beauty and fragrance of the place where the singer is hidden among the orange blossoms or magnolia, increase the magic of his almost pathetically sweet voice; but surely there is no lovelier sound in nature on this side of the sea."
Or the yellow warbler's nest: "an exquisite little cradle of silvery plant fiber, usually shreds of milkweed stalk, grass, leaves, and caterpillar's silk, neatly lined with hair, feathers, and downy felt of fern fronds." Blanchan includes folk history (how Native Americans and southern slaves thwarted mosquitoes by hanging gourds to attract purple martins) as well as common threats to birds that foreshadow current dangers to avian life (the toll taken on songbirds by lighthouses and electric towers). Such informative details, along with the author's disarming enthusiasm for her subject, will charm adult bird-watchers as well as children. Cornelia Mutel's informative foreword places Blanchan's writing in the historical context of a turn-of-the-century environmental reawakening and burgeoning activism and research by women on behalf of dwindling bird populations.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book!.......2000-06-09
This is a very happy book that both children and adults will enjoy!
While reading it, I felt like a kid, listening to all kinds of wonderful story-like descriptions about birds. The information is factual, yet presented in a way that children can understand and enjoy. Ms Blanchan's descriptions make the birds come alive!

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful tool.......2007-06-09
This atlas fills a void because it gives a very clear picture of the terrain as well as roads. I like having these atlases along to give the context for hiking excursions, as well as showing the back road ways to get there. The section on special sights to see in WV is very helpful as well. There is no substitute for more detailed topographical maps for actual hiking trails, but this atlas is a necessart intermediate step between topos and road maps.
Mountains, rivers, creeks and streams.......2004-11-15
I bought this West Virginia Map and Gazetteer in order to help my husband and I find our way through WV. We're most interested in the topography - elevations, rivers, creeks, etc. I would recommend using this book map in conjunction with a regular road map, because there isn't quite enough detail for smaller roads, but it's a great place to start.
Essential Equipment for Motorcyclists.......2002-06-13
I bought the Atlas and Gazetter for WV and MD. These books are essential equipment for getting out and enjoying the back roads. The topo info tells you if it will be flat and sunny or hilly and shady. I am really impressed with the detail of the maps. If they could make it in a water proof edition it would be perfect.
West Virginia is more than you can imagine..........2001-05-23
It's Wednesday evening. You're trying to think of something new and different to do with you weekend. Your loved one(s) are bored and restless and want to do something different. It's all up to you... What to do...
If you've been there before, there is one solution - this book of great maps. In addition to the detailed accuracy of the maps, there is a great section that details locations of interest, places to go, things to do, phone numbers you can call to make arrangements and get info. This could be the book that saves your weekend!
Stored in your car, it could also be the book that get's you where you want to go without driving to a gas station to get directions. If you've tried that lately, you know that your chances of getting good directions to far-off places are slim to none.
I have purchased several of these books - one for each state that I frequent. Whenever I want to get away, I take them out and see what I can find. We have visited covered bridges, homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright, cliffs and caves, museums and all kinds of historic landmarks.
For the price of a nice meal, you will have a travel companion for many years to come. While you can get maps on the internet, most of us still don't have that at our disposal when we are on the road. This book will be your guide!
Best buy.......2000-06-11
For its price, this definitely delivered, and some. With a comprehensible format and legend, it's definitely helpful when you're, well, not lost, just "taking the scenic route."

Book Description
Today's students are not only faced with changes in curriculum requirements, they are caught in the flux of a rapidly changing culture. If your cultural and social science references are more reflective of America in the 50s rather than Y2K, it's time to fill in the gaps with U·X·L®'s up-to-date line of multicultural titles. They cover America's most studied minority groups as well as groups with emerging school-age populations.
U·X·L® Encyclopedia of Native American Tribes offers students detailed studies of approximately 80 tribes from all over the United States and Canada, including small tribes and some that no longer exist. The Encyclopedia gives detailed yet accessible information on history, religion, art, government, economy, daily life and current social and political issues.
Each essay contains consistent rubrics that make it easier for young researchers to compare the histories and cultures of different groups -- a frequent assignment for students. The essays are broken down uniformly into the following sections:
- Introduction: An explanation of tribal roots, location, population, language and current status
- History: A brief tribal history prior to European settlement and over the last 500 years
- Oral Literature: Stories passed down through the tribe over the years, including information on cultural significance of the story and a bibliography of its source
- Culture: Information on the tribe's religion, language, buildings, subsistence methods, clothing and adornment, healing practices and customs
- Current Tribal Issues: Land claims, rights to natural resources, health care, civil rights, preservation of culture, etc.
Bibliography and further reading sections supply resources for more information and study. More than 250 photographs and illustrations and 100 maps line the volumes, providing a window into the tribal experience and culture. Native American Tribes is divided into four regional volumes for ease of use.
-
Volume One -- Northeast and Southeast includes tribes such as the Chickasaw, Fox, Iroquois, Pequot, Powhatan and many more
-
Volume Two -- The Great Basin and Southwest includes the Paiute, Shoshone, Anasazi, Apache, Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo and more
-
Volume Three -- Arctic, Subarctic, Great Plains and Plateau includes tribes such as the Inuit, Cree, Lakota, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Nez Perce and more
-
Volume Four -- California and Pacific Northwest includes the Chumash, Kwakiutl, Tlingit, Cahuilla, Maidu and more

Where are the Black contributions to American History?.......2006-03-11
I am a homeschooling mother, and this is my first year teaching my sons American History. As an immigrant, this has been a learning experience for me as well. I bought the Children's Encyclopedia of American History as a pictorial supplement to the excellent curriculum we are using. It took just a few minutes of glancing through this book to become very disappointed with my purchase. There is little or no reference to key African-American figures in American History. The discussion of the Spanish exploration of the South and West mentions every member of the party except Estebanico, the Moorish slave who actually led the expedition to what is now California. We are currently learning about George Washington Carver, and were surprised to find not even one sentence dedicated to this man's great contributions. Booker T. Washington is mentioned in one sentence, and shares a brief paragraph with W.E.B. DuBois. The entire Civil Rights movement is summed up in one paragraph. Surprisingly, a significant amount of space is dedicated to a picture of Bill Clinton hugging Monica Lewinsky, and a discussion of their relationship. The book is packed and ready to be shipped back to Amazon.
A Great Resource for Young Learners!.......2005-08-28
An excellent resource for elementary-aged kids who are interested in history. Lots of photos, illustration, and color keep my daughter interested. Written very well. Divided into decades. One of the best resources I have found for my daughter!
Well balanced presentation, beautiful pictures.......2005-03-05
I am a conservative Christian looking for the right history book to homeschool my kids. I read this DK Children's Encyclopedia from beginning to end, and I find it acceptable over all in content presentation. Another reviewer here says the book is too liberal, but I disagree; I think Mr. King clearly strives to present an unbiased view of American History. Now everybody has his own view of history, and a history book is bound to reveal somewhat of the author's bias. However, it is obvious that Mr. King kept his own opinions well under control, making this book excellent read for people of every view point.
For example, in presenting the Reagan administration, Mr. King mentioned the tax cuts, shrinking government, and the prosperity ensued. He mentioned that "The number of homeless people grew at an alarming rate" (p.239) without saying what that rate is, but over all, he did say that Reagan was so popular that even some Democrats voted for him (Reagan Democrats), and many middle class Americans consider the Reagan era the best of times.
In contrast, in describing President Clinton, Mr. King said most of his proposals didn't make it through the legislature, but Clinton remained popular because of the economic boom. Then he described Clinton's scandals in detail, leaving me the impression Clinton didn't do much else. A liberal might consider this presentation not giving Clinton enough credit.
In selecting a children's history book, one must consider what is available out there, and this one is the most balanced I find so far. If you want to see something really liberal, check out The Making Of America by Robert D Johnston. It is published by the National Geographic Society, with a forward by first lady Laura Bush; sounds good, doesn't it? It states that "Columbus, along with many settlers over the three centuries that followed his arrival, committed genocide." (p.14)
I stopped breathing when I read that sentence. I can honestly say that Mr. King never made me stop breathing.
I am a fan of DK; it seems that they strive at excellence in every book they publish, and this history book is no exception. The pictures are exquisite, the explanation concise and to the point, and the overall layout is a work of art. I do have one complaint, though: I disagree with the approach of slapping text right on top of pictures. Consider, for example, pages 74 and 75, where they have the words sitting on top of round white cotton puffs in a dark background. It makes my eyes water trying to read it. The editor actually took the trouble to justify this approach, saying that "The images don't play a bit part to the text's starring role in this book, ... the words and images have been considered together to bring this wealth to the page - and to the eye of the reader." (p.11)
I think this approach is commendable but for the eye's difficulty in discerning text from the image underneath. But overall, I highly recommend this book for grade school history studies. I don't think there is a better one anywhere.
From big news stories to struggles for peace.......2003-08-11
Beautiful photos compliment lively text to present a comprehensive guide and reference to the events and ideas which have shaped the US. From big news stories to struggles for peace over the decades, the Children's Encyclopedia Of American History packs in illustrations and complimentary text to make for a revealing, attractive reference for all ages.
Almost an Encyclopedia.......2003-06-18
If you are an environmentalist or a liberal of any strain, this book is for your kids. It is not, however, for mine. I was excited to read it because at first glance, it presents an attractive and manageable timeline of American history, complete with helpful appendices including all of the important documents that are no longer priorities in the schools. As Mr. King gets closer to current events his bias becomes more evident and more difficult to stomach. Listing all of the examples here would be impossible, but he neatly boils the Reagan era down to homelessness, the national debt and the failed War on Drugs. President George W. Bush is simply defined by the Florida recount, the "disappearing surplus," and withdrawal from Kyoto. (The War on Terror is mentioned in the "Terrorism" section and President Bush is criticized for creating additional Arab opposition by calling Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, "the Axis of Evil.") I had hoped for a fair and balanced look at American history, and this fell far short of my expectations.

Usborne Science Encyclopedia.......2006-07-06
It is an easy book to read. The author makes the information fun and easy to understand.
Science is fun!.......2000-12-23
I like this book very much! Now I know how long the Roman numerals had been used in Europe. And lot of other science factors, such as "how things work" and "how energy works". The pictures in the book is just amazing, it helps a lot for kids like myself to understand the way things work. I think it is a great book!

Experiences of girls throughout American history.......2001-10-11
Girlhood In America: An Encyclopedia is a massive, 800 page, two volume reference work presented hundreds of signed articles by more than eighty high-profile interdisciplinary scholars covering girlhood from a range of academic perspectives including history, cultural studies, education, media studies, literature, sociology, psychology, and anthropology. Ably edited by Miriam Forman-Brunell (associate professor of history and former director of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at the University of Missouri, Kansas City) this impressive compendium showcases how portrayals of girls in children's literature, magazines, movies, toys, music, and other media have deeply influenced girls' perceptions of themselves. Also presented is a wealth of clinical information on, and insights into, such issues for girls as body image, eating disorders, emerging sexuality, and depression. Excerpts from diaries, memoirs, and autobiographical novels help to illustrate the subjective experiences of girls throughout American history from the first settlements along the Atlantic coastline down to the present day. Strongly recommended for academic and community library reference collections, Girlhood In America is enhanced with numerous black-and-white illustrations, end-of-entry bibliographies, and a comprehensive index. Girlhood In America is also available in an ebook format...
