Book Description
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the topic of farm animal behavior. This is partly an academic interest for behavioral and animal scientists, but also stems from the more practical aspects of the subject as it relates to animal welfare, particularly now in light of the relationship between animal well-being and health and production. This book provides a thorough review of our knowledge of cattle behavior and how it can help to improve the care, management, and well-being of cattle. Examples are drawn from around the world, and while there is some emphasis on dairy cattle, mention is made of beef, dual-purpose or draught cattle where appropriate. All key topics, such as social, reproductive and feeding behavior are covered with thorough reviews of the research literature. The book is a valuable work for advanced students and research workers in animal, dairy, and veterinary sciences, as well as applied ethology.

Description:
In the coastal grasslands of western France, extensive mixed grazing by cattle and horses has been practised for many centuries. The vegetation of these old embanked grasslands varies along a topographical gradient with a hygrophilous plant community in low-lying depressions seasonally flooded, a mesophilous community on high level flats that are never flooded, and a meso-hygrophilous community on slopes where the soil remains saline. Recently, fewer horses have been grazed on these pastures and so a 6-year study was designed to investigate the effects of monospecific and mixed grazing by horses and cattle on plant community structure, composition and diversity. Mixed grazing produced the most species-rich and structurally diverse swards. Mixed grazing enhanced the development of rosette, sub-halophyte and halophyte species where the soil is saline, due to additive effects between the two herbivore species. Mixed grazing also limited the strongly competitive Elymus repens and Agrostis stolonifera on horse latrine areas, cattle grazing, thus showing a compensatory effect. The combination of additive and compensatory effects with mixed grazing could be used to manage plant diversity, heterogeneity in vegetation structure and communities of conservation value at the scale of the grassland ecosystem.

Habitat use of ponies and cattle foraging together in a coastal dune area [An article from: Biological Conservation]

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Biological Conservation, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Grazing by large ungulates has been chosen as a management tool in scrub-dominated dune reserves at the Belgian coast. Due to morphological and physiological differences between cattle and ponies, differences in foraging behaviour and habitat use are expected, and these may result in a different impact on the spatially heterogeneous and nutrient-limited ecosystem. Grazing behaviour and habitat use of Shetland ponies and Highland cattle, grazing together in a coastal dune area (60 ha) were investigated at various levels of the foraging hierarchy (habitat, vegetation type, sward height and diet). Habitat use overlap was high in all seasons; both cattle and pony spent most of their grazing time in the grass-dominated habitat. However, Shetland ponies concentrated their grazing activity more on the grass-dominated habitat than did cattle. Cattle spent a greater proportion of their grazing activity in woodland and scrub, compared to the ponies. Foraging activity in woodland and scrub is strongly influenced by season. Within the grass-dominated habitat both species preferred foraging in the grasslands and avoided open vegetation and moss dunes. Within the grasslands, cattle grazed less on the short swards than did ponies. Both cattle and ponies predominantly foraged on graminoids, though there are minor differences between both species and among seasons. Browsing of woody plants occurred only by cattle. Where grazing management has been implemented to maintain dune grasslands and to avoid further invasion by scrub, a combination of cattle and ponies appears to be adequate. Ponies are suitable for maintaining grasslands, but they have no impact on invading scrub. Cattle have an impact on scrub development, both by direct consumption of various shrub species and by opening initially closed scrub.

Description:
Grazing itineraries of herded and free grazing cattle (n=194), goats (n=148), and sheep (n=129) were monitored in a village territory over a 1-year cycle by direct observation of grazing and excretion behaviour and by parallel animal tracking using a Global Positioning System. During the study period, standing and litter biomass of spontaneous vegetation and crop residues was measured repeatedly on sample plots of fields (n=16), fallows (n=15) and rangeland (n=8). Based on a land use map, a Geographic Information System on forage availability was produced for the territory and overlaid with the livestock grazing itineraries. The animals' behaviour at pasture was related to the forage mass encountered along their daily itineraries in order to analyse the spatial variation in behaviour as influenced by season, livestock species and herd management mode. Maximum daily itinerary lengths were 25km in cattle, 20km in goats and 21km in sheep; itinerary length varied significantly between species, herd management modes and season. Animals spent between 456 and 625min per day on pasture, the grazing day of cattle being longer than that of sheep and goats. Across seasons, all three species spent on average about 60% of the daily grazing time feeding, 20-26% walking and 12-20% resting. The forage mass encountered along the animals' itineraries was higher than the average amount of forage available in the area. Particularly during the late dry and the rainy season, herding increased the amount of forage on offer to grazing livestock. Throughout the year, 39% of the observed excretions occurred on cropland, 31% on rangeland, 20% on fallows and 10% in and around settlements; the spatial repartition of excreta deposits differed between herded and free grazing animals, with free grazing animals depositing a higher share of excretions on barren land. The obtained information on the variation of grazing and excretion behaviour with respect to ruminant species, land use type, forage supply, season and herd management can be coupled with quantitative data on feed intake and excreta deposition, in order to compute livestock-mediated nutrient budgets for Sahelian agro-pastoral land use systems. .

You can do better (and I should have known better).......2007-02-23
Since I'm planning another trip to Italy this year, I got the current edition on a whim. I had bought an old version several years ago on a discount rack when I first started traveling to Europe and I found a fair bit of the information helpful, but this one is a disappointment in several ways. As others have pointed out, much of the information is quite obviously inaccurate or out of date. Furthermore, this is not much good as a shopping guide unless you have money to burn since it is heavily skewed toward the high-end designer market. The author throws in a few snippets from her younger associates about more affordable places to shop but that's not enough. Admittedly, Italy hasn't been a bargain hunter's paradise for many years, even before the currency conversion that has almost ruined shopping in Europe for us Americans, but there really are many affordable options for the average traveler. Just take a look on Virtual Tourist or some fo the other travel forums & you'll find a wealth of advice. From that & my own searches, I've found a pile of good shopping information. Now if I can do that on my own, surely Gershman and her team could have done a better job of research, especially if they have the nerve to charge money for it.
However, my real problem is with Gershman's attitude, which has clearly worsened between the date of my old edition and the present one. The woman is a snob, plain and simple. If you don't catch this from her over-emphasis on designer goods, you'll figure it out from all of her complaining about Italy being overrun with tourists (obviously forgetting that she is one herself)and the Italian merchants taking advantage of this by offering more & more junk. When I read her review of Francesco Rogani, a handbag shop in Rome, I truly wondered if I had been to the same place: she claims that there is a discrepancy between the selling price & the actual retail, the latter of which she claims is too much for sub-standard goods, but what is even more puzzling is her complaint that the clerks have a "less than customer-oriented" attitude. I have been there several times & have never been told of this mysterious difference between prices. Also, I have always found them to be courteous and polite; in fact, on my last visit, they found out it was my birthday & offered to get me a reservation at a special restaurant that I never would have found on my own (it was wonderful and they treated me to the appetizer, dessert, and a glass of liqueur). Now if that isn't "customer-oriented" service, I don't know what is.
Anyone who's traveled abroad even a few times will tell you the same thing: if you act like a typical snotty, demanding tourist, you won't be treated well. The Golden Rule is especially important these days for us Americans, and I assure you that if you are polite, well-mannered and friendly to the Italians or anyone else, you'll have a wonderful time shopping. Talk to the concierge at the hotel and the waiters & shop owners if you want to find out the real bargains - they may not be big-name designer baubles screaming their status, but they will be special, something that a real Italian would own, and more than likely something that you wouldn't find back home.
SUZY IS THE BEST OUT THERE......BAR NONE.......2005-09-22
I have traveled to Europe and Asia with a trusty Born To Shop Guide Book many times and Suzy gives me the best overall advice. Every once in a while a new writer will come on board with no experience and forgot to warn us of the pitfalls of being a "Rich American Traveler"-Suzy has steered me clear of many problems while traveling alone. This is the reason I ADORE her and have even bought the older versions just to compare information. Time moves on and locations change.
Can't wait for the new Born To Shop San Francisco and I just received the new Asian version-try these too!
Don't bother!.......2005-07-27
Don't bother buying this book. First, none of the Born To Shop books get updated much between editions, so lots of information is out of date. Second, Suzy Gershman is totally out of touch with reality. I took a shopping tour to Italy with a company called Shop Around Tours and obviously a lot of us had this book. The tour leader warned us not to pay too much attention to it and she was right. BUT we went to Mantero, which is one of the places mentioned in the book, and it was great. Otherwise, the people that went off on their own following Suzy's wild goose chases were very disappointed. So the shopping in Italy was great, but this book was a waste of money.
Full of inaccuracies.......2005-03-31
Suzy Gershman needs to retire already. All of her books, including this one, are full of inaccuracies. Each edition is barely updated, so there's no need to buy the new version if you have an old one. It's time Frommers dropped Gershman and hired someone under the age of 70 to update these books that shops NOW and knows what they're talking about. These Born To Shop books are an amusing read but a complete waste of money if you're looking for current information.

Customer Reviews:
The least useful travel book I've bought.......2000-04-18
I bought this book because I had a positive experience with the Hong Kong version (which is substantially better) during a trip 5 years ago. I did not expect much from this book, but it managed to disappoint anyway. The writing style is so conversational and unstructured that it quickly becomes annoying.
I could put up with the writing style if it was not so obvious that the author was filling space to make up for the lack of content. Basically, if you plan to shop for designer clothes and purses in the big cities and want to know where the designer stores are, then you might get some use out of this. Beyond that, the content is severely limited. Probably the worst example I can think of involves an outlet store. The author admits that she could not even find the place, yet she still included it in her book!
This book was indispensible.......2000-01-16
I just returned from Italy and used this book almost every day. We loved the directions for finding great bathrooms. This book is not just about shopping but tells you all the hints you wish other guide books would tell you. It's very practical and best of all small and light. Her suggestion about how to reach your hotel from the train station in Venice was the best. Thanks for such a great little helper.
My Shopping Bible.......2000-01-06
A must-have for serious shoppers! I was so engrossed in this book I did not notice my plane was delayed on the runway 1 1/2 hours. The attention to detail was impeccable; I used the maps to plan a different shopping trip every day, making the best use of time. Thanks to the tips, I was able to shop on Via della Spiga without maxing out my Visa. Advice like this is indispensable; I was able to bring home the perfect souvenir for everyone and stock up on leather goods during July sales for Xmas gifts. The Born to Shop series allows me to look forward to business trips and constructively deal with jet lag. I earned a Ph.D. in Italian designers, and Peck and Frette linens are among my passions all thanks to this book!
Suzy does her homework ........1999-09-12
Suzy Gershman is one of the only writers of series travel guides who actually earns her percentage of each book, in my opinion. Her shopping series is actually significantly updated from year to year, and therefore, is one of the only ones worth buying repeatedly. I have frequently been astonished that many other brandname guides are essentially reprints of the version for the previous year with little to no update. Why buy them? I've always gotten great tips from Suzy and I appreciate her hard work and wonderful sense of humor. When travel time is limited, it's nice to have Suzy to have done the advance footwork. Keep it up, Suzy! You keep researching and your readers will try to continue to create opportunities to use your shopping advice!
VERY INFORMATIVE AND WAS ABLE TO SAVE LOTS OF MONEY.......1998-04-24
ALTHOUGH QUITE INFORMATIVE WHILE I WAS IN ITALY, I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO FIND THAT THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN YOUR BOOK ABOUT THE SHROUD OF TURIN WAS NOT UP TO DATE. AFTER TRAVELLING TO TURIN FROM MILAN ONLY TO FIND OUT THE CATHEDRAL WAS CLOSED AND THE SHROUD HAS NOT BEEN ON DISPLAY FOR THE PAST 28 YEARS. IT WILL BE OPENED IN LATE APRIL, WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE.

Titanic.......2006-03-23
Do you like old ships? Well, I know the right one for you. It is the Titanic. It is about a ship that hit an ice berg and went down. So go under water with Dr.Robert Ballard and explore the Titanic. Good Luck! This book is recommended for 8 and up.
A Sad, Yet True Look at the TITANIC .......2006-02-12
Exploring the TITANIC is a very profound read. Robert Ballard (author of this book) is an avid diver, with the dream of finding and exploring the TITANIC. He joined a bunch of French explorers, and traveled far into the deep of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland where the TITANIC sank in 1912. Ballard used Argo (an advanced water-safe camera) to take pictures of the TITANIC until he found that he could not use Argo anymore because the rough waves were pounding against it. Minute after minute, hour after hour, the Knorr (the submarine Ballard was traveling on) floated in a sea of darkness because the only light they had was the light from Argo. About ten hours went by before Ballard decided to use Angus. Angus was an older camera that Ballard had used in previous explorations. In an hour or two, Ballard had found the TITANIC. Somehow he was not satisfied. He wanted to take clear pictures but did not know how to get them with the technology that he had with him. He pondered this for days. He knew that he was about 13 feet above the TITANIC. Then it came to him that he just needed to go down 13 feet more to get his pictures. Ballard convinced the Captain to go down the 13 feet. When they reached their target, they were able to get their pictures.
Ballard's dream was still not fulfilled because he had not yet explored the TITANIC. About a year later, Ballard and two other divers went underwater to explore the TITANIC. They had traveled down four or five times to complete their mission of exploring the TITANIC. Ballard's dream was fulfilled.
I would recommend this book to any reader that is NOT sensitive. This book told about people on the TITANIC who died. I think the author told us too much about people's lives and made us care about them too much. It was sad when you found out the person died. If they weren't killed, then one of the person's loved ones was killed. For example, Jack Thayer was talked about very much in the beginning. I became fond of him because the author gave so much detail about his life. When Ballard told us that Thayer had survived the crash, he did not stop there. He went on to tell us that Jack's father and his friend did not make it. This made me very emotional. If you would like to learn about Robert Ballard and his exploration of the TITANIC, then by all means, read this book. If the sad parts about the people who died bother you, just skip those pages and you'll still learn a lot about exploring the TITANIC.
If you like reading about the Titanic you will love this book!!.......2005-07-10
It's a true story about the Titanic and what things Robert Ballard and his team find in the Titanic.
A fabulous read.......2001-12-21
I first read this book almost 15 years ago, at age 5 : I loved it, and read it uncountable times. Today it is still just as fascinating. Beautifully illustrated and clearly written, it was the first of many Ballard books that I read. I would also recommend the Discovery of the Bismark and The Wreck of the Isis, just as interesting but less well known. A great way to start reading about the great ships of the past.
Read about the Hole thing from the Beginning.......2001-11-22
Goes behind the Titanic. Why did the Titanic sank, why it was built, how they came up with the name Titanic etc. It has everything you need to know about the Titanic. Even has real actual pictures taken of the Titanic in the water and above.

Excellent Book.......2007-01-07
This is a sensational book.I have read this one quite a bit.
I love the bit where they find the boiler on the bottom of the ocean.
It talks about the trials they went through trying to find the elusive Titanic.Nobody had seen that ship since it sunk in 1912.
I have always loved reading about that ship, something about the whole story has fascinated me.
I think the era it all happened in,as well as the beauty of the ship itself. It certainly had a mystique of its own.
To look at the pictures of the ship how it has deteriorated over time is very ghostly. To see objects such as dolls heads and boots realy shows you the tragedy that once happened on a very cold night.
The stupidity to push the ship full speed through an iceberg field maked the mind boggle.Playing dice with all those lives, and to top it all off the lack of life boats on board.
Dr.Robert D. Ballard became a legend himself after the discovery of the most famous ship to ever hit the waves.
HONEST LOOK AT DISCOVERY.......2005-06-13
Ballard's book takes us from his early days at Woods Hole, where he dreamed of finding Titanic, to the discovery in '85, and finally to the 1986 expedition, that examined the wreck thoroughly. It is written well, and illustrated beautifully, with pictures of the wreck site set alongside ones showing the ship in 1912.
Ballard's honesty in writing this book is striking. He makes no attempt to portray himself as a great hero, finding Titanic like an oceanic cowboy, but rather lays out his strengths and weaknesses for others to judge. He is clearly proud of his accomplishment, yet regrets some of his actions, if only for the meaning others might take from it. Few authors have ever been so modest.
I was also pleased that the book dealt with the sinking itself as much as it did. The bulk deals with the discovery of course, but the last chapter sheds light on Titanic mysteries based on the wreckage. One never feels the chilly, star lit night of 1912 to be very far away.
A most outstanding book........2004-09-21
Dr Robert Ballard will forever remain the man who found the Titanic. In so doing, he became the world's most famous ocean explorer who found the world's most famous ship.
It is not for me to inform readers of the story of the Titanic. Almost everyone grew up knowing something about that ship - even if the finer points of information they thought they knew were inaccurate.
Having then achieved the outstanding feat of finding this elusive shipwreck, Bob Ballard has put together the most complete - and yet again "outstanding," tale of search, discovery and finally success, coupled with an accurate portrayal of the life and death of the ship itself. All the facts and historic photographs are there - and, speaking as a professional shipwreck historian, he really has done the most thorough job of work here.
Finally, he has put together the most (and I deliberately use that word again) "outstanding" collection of artwork created by Ken Marschall. I may be wrong, but it seems to me nobody had heard of this artist until the first editions of this book appeared - now he is a household name amongst those in the know.
From thousands of photographic images taken far below the surface, Bob Ballard created montage after montage of the various sections and profiles of the wreck (i.e. big photographs made up of thousands of little photographs) so that Mr Marschall was able to provide us with paintings which look like single colour photographs of this and that section which go together to make up the entire wreck.
I congratulate Dr Ballard on an excellent and professional job of work. Altogether, the most outstanding book for which 5 stars are not enough.

A MUST HAVE for any avid TITANIC researcher.......2000-06-26
I purchased this marvellous book on the 88th aniversary of the sinking of Titanic. I am about half way into the book and can honestly say that I can't put it down. This book is a must have for any Titanic buff (like me). This book not only comes with a gripping tale of the authors quest for the Titanic, but it also is illustrated with marvellous pictures, and colour pictures and diagrams by the world renowned Titanic artist Ken Marshall. I can honestly say that this book is one of my favourites out of my Titanic collection.
Absolutely gripping, with spectacular photos of the ship........1998-10-02
Beautiful pictures of the ship before and after the tragedy. Plus a comprehensive history of the ship and it's passengers, that doesn't stop at the sinking. An excellent buy!

Left me wanting more........2007-05-05
Personally, I rate Dr Ballard's books; The Discovery of the Titanic, Lost ships of Guadalcanal, Return to Midway and Exploring the Lusitania as some of the finest works on the subject of shipwrecks ever to have been published. On this occasion, however, I am left with a feeling of disappointment at finding such a thin book.
Perhaps anything short of the discovery of another Titanic would always be a disappointment to some - but let us examine the content. Firstly, we have 5 of the world's greatest ever shipwrecks; Titanic, Empress of Ireland, Lusitania, Britannic and Andrea Doria. Each of these vessels was a great ship in it's own right and their like will never be seen again. Indeed, entire books have been written about each of them - by this author and by others. As with all great shipwreck stories, there is always an element of mystery - arguments for and against the mine versus torpedo theory for example. Those arguments, in addition to all the many other elements of the overall picture, must always be fully presented and reasoned in order to allow readers to draw their own conclusions.
In this book, the text, photography and excellent (as always) illustrations by Ken Marschall are confined to 56 pages. Quite frankly, that is not enough room for any single great shipwreck - let alone five! Easy to see why I was left wanting more.
