Book Description

In Bambi vs. Godzilla, David Mamet, the award-winning playwright and screenwriter, gives us an exhilaratingly subversive inside look at Hollywood from the perspective of a filmmaker who has always played the game his own way.

Who really reads the scripts at the film studios? How is a screenplay like a personals ad? Whose opinion matters when revising a screenplay? Why are there so many producers listed in movie credits? And what the hell do those producers do, anyway? Refreshingly unafraid to offend, Mamet provides hilarious, surprising, and bracingly forthright answers to these and other questions about virtually every aspect of filmmaking, from concept to script to screen.

He covers topics ranging from “How Scripts Got So Bad” to the oxymoron of “Manners in Hollywood.” He takes us step-by-step through some of his favorite movie stunts and directorial tricks, and demonstrates that it is craft and crew, not stars and producers, that make great films. He tells us who his favorite actors and what his favorite movies are, who he thinks is the most perfect actor to grace the screen, and who he thinks should never have appeared there.

Demigods and sacred cows of the movie business–beware! But for the rest of us, Mamet speaking truth to Hollywood makes for searingly enjoyable reading.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It rambled a little here and there.......2007-10-10

Overall I liked the book. It had some great stories and advice, but at times he would ramble on and on about stuff and then the point would be in one sentence. I guess if he didn't ramble it wouldn't be a long book. The chapters were short so it's an easy read, and if you want to know what the business is like then it's a good read. I will recommend for people who want to get into the business, I don't recommend this book for those who are just movie buffs.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Mamet with a twist.......2007-09-09

This is vintage Mamet; sharp, insightful, renegade, taking potshots at sacred cows. Unlike earlier collections like 'Writing in Restaurants' there is a new ingredient running through most pieces- a knifetip of something angry and bitter.
That's made more noticeable by a chapter that starts with a genial, witty quote from 'Richard Weisz'... Richard Weisz being one of Mamet's alter egos. The world -and specifically that world- needs all the Mamet it can get.

3 out of 5 stars War Stories A Plenty.......2007-07-29

As the title suggests, this is not a book that glorifies the movie business. Through stories from the trenches Mamet paints a vivid and realistic picture of what it's like trying to negotiate the turbulent rapids of Hollywood. I was a little afraid of this book at first, because I really thought the author, whom I respect very much, was going to trash the business, that I love so very much. But I was pleasantly surprised that he was able to present a balanced picture. Yes, there are some people that he hates (actors be ware), but you can tell that he has a true love for the business. Mamet also uses his humor to offset some of the more acidic anecdotes. All in all, a good book. A quick read. And his insights are very unique.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-07-24

I love David Mamet's plays. He's an excellent writer. So I was enthusiastic about getting the chance to read his personal views of Hollywood. And while I agree with him that the studio machinery is all about profits and very little about art or craft - when was it ever different? - I was ultimately disappointed by his book. There were times when I just didn't know what he was talking about. I think his writing here is often inaccessible. I may not be the most erudite reader, but Mamet left me cold. I just couldn't get into the style of his writing. I felt distanced rather than drawn in. When I read a book like this, I want to devour it, not pick at its little pieces. You may feel differently, that's fine. The book didn't pull me in the way I'd hoped it would.

5 out of 5 stars David Mamet on the movie business? Please?!.......2007-06-01

This book was so wonderful, I took it out from the library, read it, and then had to buy it. I never do that. It's a book you'll want to read over and over, have other people read (at least certain essays) and refer to the filmography repeatedly. Mamet is so amazingly astute about everything, but particularly about things relating to theater and the movie business. If you are a movie buff at all, read this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Wedding Photography Book!.......2007-10-03

This book has excellent recommendations and techniques for capturing the most beautiful wedding photos. The pictures published in this book alone are worth the cost of the book, IMO. They are beautiful and give great ideas. She tells you exactly how she captured the photo although I would've liked some more technical info on some of the photos. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars are you a photographer?.......2007-10-01

If you are a photographer, you know perfectly well that no book is going to teach you much of the style you develop on your own. It is great for general ideas, but you really should be able to see who you are working with and figure out what kind of shots will suit the couple. I doubt that there are many brides that will appreciate a picture like the one on the front cover of this book.

3 out of 5 stars Strong photographs, weak on techniques.......2007-09-02

If you're looking for a book that illustrates wedding photography in broad strokes, this book is fine. It talks about breaking the day down into different sections, what the photographer likes to have in her bag, some post-processing filters she uses, etc... However the treatment is on the shallow end in detail.

On the back of the book it says "... to inspire any bride-to-be and the photographer on her special day." I think as long as your not looking for more than inspiration, this book will be fine, however it does not really go into technical depth on the challenges and techniques to handle those challenges that a wedding photographer will encounter.

It's really aimed more at inspiration than instruction.

4 out of 5 stars Good general book on Digital Wedding photography.......2007-05-15

Bambi covers all the basics, from before the event, the event, manipulating the image and delivery. Not a lot of details (except she does give exactly what is in her camera bag), but overall a good book. I was somewhat surprised at the poor quality of some of the images, especially the cover image. Not what one would expect from Bambi.

1 out of 5 stars First book much better.......2006-12-07

I returned this book after the first read. As a new wedding photographer I admire Cantrell's style and her first book was excellent, thus I had high expections for her second book which covered digital wedding photography. It seems as if she was distracted in writing this book. The explanations regarding equipment, dealing with the wedding couple, pricing, are vague and the explanations tired and repetetive, and many of the photos are out of focus and grainy. Definitely not of the quality and caliber of her first writing endeavor. If one is buying this book searching for ideas on how to effectively manage your digital workflow, deal with jpeg vs. raw, eye-candy photos for inspiration for one's one work, and digital techniques for wedding photography, you will not find it here. You may want to purchase her first book for inspiration and ideas, it is better written.

VINTAGE DISNEY IS back! This beautiful Little Golden Books boxed set brings back six of the most popular Disney stories of all time with the original artwork from the 1940s. From Pinocchio, Mother Goose, and Dumbo to Bambi, Scamp, and The Three Little Pigs, these gorgeously illustrated classics will make this boxed set a true gem for fans and collectors alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exactly as advertised.......2007-08-25

It's hard to beat these old classics. Packaged together in a paper slipcase just like a DVD box set, these six Little Golden Books are exact reproductions of titles published in the 1940s and 1950s, with those same sweet stories, charming if somewhat muddy illustrations and, of course, cheap little cardboard covers. But quality issues aside, they're perfect for kids to spread out on the floor, read in bed or, of course, have read to them. One book, "Walt Disney's Mother Goose," is a collection of 32 short nursery rhymes illustrated with comparable scenes from Disney films and cartoons. It includes such rare tales as Bobby Shaftoe, Cross Patch, Deedle Deedle Dumpling, Jumping Joan and Little Betty Blue.

If you love the art in these books you should also check out Walt Disney's Classic Storybook. It's a keepsake hardback with most of these same stories and illustrations (and many more), but it's printed beautifully on quality gloss paper. In it, these illustrations are just stunning, with crisp lines and vivid colors.

Bambi comes into the world in a forest glade, loved by his mother, protected by a thicket. He grows up frolicking in the meadow, befriending butterflies and screech owls, and learning about the dark fear of all the woodland creatures: man. Over time, Bambi seeks out the wisdom of the prince of deer, a magnificent old stag who walks alone through the paths of the forest. Bambi is torn between his desire to be with his beloved mate, Faline, and his yearning for the knowledge and solitude the prince represents. He is also conflicted about his friend Gobo, who has returned to the forest after a winter living among humans. Gobo behaves unnaturally by strolling through the woods by day when other deer are sleeping, showing no fear of his natural mortal enemy.

This 1926 classic has been stretched and squeezed into many forms over the years, but the Felix Salten original should not be missed. With the richer, more highly wrought language of his time, Salten crafts a story layered in meaning, weighty with its message. The sometimes cruel, often joyful cycle of life continues, in spite of those who try to defy nature's law. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

When Bambi is born on a spring morning deep in a forest glade, so begins one of the most moving and beloved of all children's stories. As the curious fawn grows into a majestic stag, he is exposed to all the beauty, hardship, and danger of the natural world. Bambi learns how to forage for food in winter and experiences the joy of frolicking in an open field in summer. He makes friends -- the wise old owl, the good hare, the chattery squirrels. And he confronts Man, the most feared of all creatures in the forest.

Janet Schulman, Steve Johnson, and Lou Fancher have brilliantly adapted and reillustrated Felix Salten's classic novel to create a storybook perfectly suited for young readers. Children who loved Walt Disney's animated film and those who have an abiding interest in the natural world will be enchanted by this stunning presentation of an unforgettable tale.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-06-27

My son really enjoyed this story. He was entertained since it had differences from the one "Bambi" story everyone is familiar with.

4 out of 5 stars Bambi.......2006-11-10

I purchased this book for my 8 year old who needed it for a school project. The vocabulary used in this book is a bit difficult. I also found it to be quite different than the Disney movie and other written versions of the story. The author, Felix Salten, uses elaborate descriptions and you will feel as if you are actually in the woods with the deer! I recommend this book, but please be aware that it is not "sugar coated" like the movie!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT UNCLE WALT'S VERSION.......2006-09-22

I love this work. This of course the the story that was made into the now classic animated Disney film. This not not like the Disney film at all. Now I am rather fond of the film and can remember my mother taking it to it shortly after the war (WWII) and of course have since taken my children and grandchildren to see the same. This book/story though, is far superior in my opinion. Actually, read as an adult, it is quite profound, dealing with quite a number of issues. Relationships between parent and child, child and peers and nature and man. I do not feel you can classify this work as an antihunting story. It more or less puts and keeps man in his place in the big picture of things, for better or for worse. Like another reviewer, I was particularly fascinated with Bambi's friend who became a "pet of man." There is a lesson here as to following ones nature. I am not sure I completely understand the message, but know it is there. Yes, this work does deal with death and dying and yes there is sad parts. I personally don't feel children should be sheltered from such things completely as they all will eventually have to face the same feelings and dilemmas. I hate to use the word "classic" as it is quite often over used, but know of no other way to describe this one. I do highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've ever read!.......2006-06-26

Before I read this book, I was a fanatic of the movie Bambi. I still am, but it's very different from the book and it seems like 15 minutes after you read the book. I could see EVERYTHING that was described in the text of the book. It really has an effect on emotions. Some things are lighthearted, some things are truly heart breaking, there's even a few laughs. Everything is described in much detail. I felt like, at one point, that I was Bambi running for the first time in the meadow, drinking in the warm air. I could hear the dogs barking, the hoofbeats, and the gunshots. I HIGHLY recommend it to nature lovers and fans of the film. Now I just need to read Bambi's Children!

5 out of 5 stars Bambi.......2006-03-24

People think of Bambi as being a book for young children. It is actually a strong political statement. It is very interesting for adults as well. You may or may not agree with the political statement.

    Book Description

"Language ideologies" are cultural representations, whether explicit or implicit, of the intersection of language and human beings in a social world. Mediating between social structures and forms of talk, such ideologies are not only about language. Rather, they link language to identity, power, aesthetics, morality and epistemology. Through such linkages, language ideologies underpin not only linguistic form and use, but also significant social institutions and fundamental nottions of person and community. The essays in this new volume examine definitions and conceptions of language in a wide range of societies around the world. Contributors focus on how such defining activity organizes language use as well as institutions such as religious ritual, gender relations, the nation-state, schooling, and law. Beginning with an introductory survey of language ideology as a field of inquiry, the volume is organized in three parts. Part I, "Scope and Force of Dominant Conceptions of Language," focuse on the propensity of cultural models of language developed in one social domain to affect linguistic and social behavior across domains. Part II, "Language Ideology in Institutions of Power," continues the examination of the force of specific language beliefs, but narrows the scope to the central role that language ideologies play in the functioning of particular institutions of power such as schooling, the law, or mass media. Part III, "Multiplicity and Contention among Ideologies," emphasizes the existence of variability, contradiction, and struggles among ideologies within any given society. This will be the first collection of work to appear in this rapidly growing field, which bridges linguistic and social theory. It will greatly interest linguistic anthropologists, social and cultural anthropologists, sociolinguists, historians, cultural studies, communications, and folklore scholars.

4 out of 5 stars A HANDSOME, FINE ADDITION TO ANYBODY'S DISNEY COLLECTION, AND I SAY "THANK GOD" FOR NO "TURN THE PAGE" CHIMES.......2007-10-08

I know these Disney Storybook CD Combo items are "intended for Children", but you can buy and enjoy them for yourself even if you don't have kids. I don't have kids. I'm just a Disney fan. I'm sick to death of customers complaning that these items do not have chimes so their kids know when to turn the page. I'm an adult Disney fan who purchases these items for a variety of different reasons and uses. I download the CDS into my computer.
I find the chimes annoying! They almost ruin several projects I've used these books/CDS for; so I, for one, say "THANK GOD THE CHIMES ARE ABSENT HERE!" I'm only deducting one star here because it is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to remove the CD from the book. I almost ruined the beautiful book cover getting the CD out! I put the CD in a separate Jewel Case Box.
The book is a beautifully illustrated, sturdy, handsome (another "THANK GOD!") Hard-Cover. The CD narrator is professional enough, but I wish a narrator AND voice actors had been used for the characters; as a similar Disney book and CD Series, also available on Amazon, does. This Book and CD features "BAMBI," "DUMBO", "THE LION KING", and
    "101 DALMATIONS."
This review holds true for the purple "DISNEY PRINCESS CD STORYBOOK" which features "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST", "THE LITTLE MERMAID", "CINDERELLA", and "SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS." Both the DISNEY ANIMALS/DISNEY PRINCESS CD STORYBOOK" sets are very affordably priced here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Bedtime.......2007-02-10

These books have great illistrations and a plesant voice reading the story. I ordered this for my 4 year old and the only problem is that it doesn't have a signal to turn the pages. It will be a great when she is ready to learn to read. It is also great for bedtime, we put the cd on and let her fall asleep to the story. She love this. I would totally recommend this product.

    1 out of 5 stars Rebecca, Colorado.......2006-08-24

Do NOT buy this book if your child cannot read. There is no cue to turn the page. Why would a company make such a ridiculous item? Who do they think is buying these books? We buy them because our children can't read.

2 out of 5 stars Read Along But No Help on when to Turn the Page.......2006-03-27

Isn't the idea behind a read along to help pre & early readers learn? There is no tone or anything indicating when to turn the page. This is very frustrating for my son who just turned 4 and received this as a birthday gift. Generally he loves these books. They are a great quiet time activity that he can do alone and they foster early reading skills. BUT...without helping him know when to turn the page it isn't any help at all, and he needs constant help. We do a lot of reading together, however, I intended this to be something he could do on his own. A BIG disappointment for both of us!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-07-01

I think this CD storybook is wonderful. The pictures in this storybook are beautiful too. I love this, and I think every child and people in all ages will love this!!!

3 out of 5 stars Basic Treatise on Money Management for Couples .......2007-08-14

The author covers the common financial goals facing couples and sets out to provide guidance in the most areas. Holzer shows couples how to work together to have a fruitful financial life, how to organize their dual financial lives, how to work through life stage issues. She provides excellent checklists, exercises, financial statistics, and stories to convey her points. She forcefully suggests that complete financial records, files and legal documents be kept up-to-date and in a secure location. Leave nothing to change is her focus.

According to the author, most couples have different views on budgeting, investing and spending and they don't really spend the time to sit down and develop a joint financial profile and plan. Sometimes one of them manages one of these three areas because the other party does not have the skill or interest. This is not really an optimal situation.

In her chapter titled "Being Prepared for Emergencies," covering the importance of various types of insurance, she inexplicably does not mention the need to determine if long-term care insurance (LTC) should be considered. This is strange in light of the rising cost of this care for the elderly and the importance of preserving assets from being depleted, if LTC is needed and no insurance coverage was previously bought.

The two chapters on investing do not contain sufficient substance to be implementable by couples. When discussing investing, Holzer does not believe that buy-and-hold and asset allocation should be the way to invest all the time. Actually, she says she uses a combination of fundamental and technical analysis (using point-and-figure charts) to select investments, but she does not show readers how to invest successfully using these techniques. Mutual funds are her suggested investment vehicles for those who don't have the time to research their investments. For some reason, Holzer does not mention the use of ETFs as replacement for mutual fund investing. This is unusual in light of the 550 funds available and growing in volume and usage daily. Since ETFs have lower annual expense ratio than active mutual funds, the fact that they were not mentioned is unfortunate.

Overall, Holzer provides a good overview of how couples should work together to develop an action plan to better manage their financial future. Readers will find useful guidance and be able to see importance of working together to maximize their financials, retirement funds, estates, and credit. However, the lack of details on handling investments, the fact that ETFs were not mentioned as possible investment alternatives to mutual funds, as well the non-mention of long-term care insurance results in an incomplete picture for couples.

5 out of 5 stars Great Conversation to Have.......2007-03-15

This book has helped have the opening conversation with my husband on what has been a very touchy subject in society. We place so much emphasis
on money but no one really wants to talk about it. This book provides the perfect entry into that conversation with your partner around the subject of money. The work sheets are very helpful. This book made the conversation much easier.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-03-14

This book really helped me and my husband discuss our financial future. It was a conversation we had avoided for some time, and I found Bambi's advice to be particular helpful in approaching the topic. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a little help in getting that conversation started!

    5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2007-03-14

Although I am currently not married, I live with a man and this book helped us both sort out the delicate financial issues that couples face. Bambi writes in simple terms and makes a lot of sense.

3 out of 5 stars this book is not for everyone.......2007-09-10

if your looking for a book to help you on your way ,forget this one ! if you dont have hassleblad or other high end equipment' forget this book, if your not already a professional forget this book ,if your using digital media , forget this book, the book however does have some good pointers and suggestions, but if avant garde photography isnt your bag,,, forget this book. i was extremely disappointed in the way it seemed to just address the already established proffessional, and last if your not interested in black white and infrared film usage forget this book!
maybe if this book was updated it would be better but that is a big maybe

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book.......2006-03-08

You must have this book and read it... you will learn something and giving ideas... I do not mind what camera they used but the measurement of lenses is very important... I searched throught out the web site... my conclusion are most of wedding photographer I counted used 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 300mm. My attention is to shot portrait and wedding therefore I bought 50mm and my 85mm is on the way but I could not afford to buy the rest might be the wide lens and zooms

3 out of 5 stars decent, but starting to age.......2006-03-03

The imagery in this book is of a fairly high quality. The locations and scenes look believeable; nothing over-the-top and extravagent like some books show (by that I mean, obviously created by wedding photographers who shoot only for the wealthy in the best locales). The complete lack of digital is a real weak point to this book. As of the time of this review, I'm told that nearly 95% of wedding photographers shoot digital, especially starting out. Therefore the equipment suggestions, while still somewhat informative, are heavily dated (the primary emphasis on medium format, while compelling, is no longer the most efficient way to get going in the business). The images are all high quality and quite inspiring. It's a decent work, but I'll probably buy a few more wedding photography books before finding the one that does me the most good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for the Budding Wedding Photographer.......2006-01-04

The images in this book are very inspiring. Studying the imagery alone is very educational.

A constant student of light and photography, this was my first book on Wedding Photography. After reading it, my wishlist grew to include more lenses, camera bodies and flash units. And my photo-journalistic wedding photography improved (results may vary ;)

This book will have you thinking more about contemporary, artistic and moody images to be captured on the Wedding day. You'll also begin thinking about your services and the value you can offer your clients. This book will have you thinking about adding an assistant to your list of must-haves for every Wedding job--an assistant who understands your vision and goals for the wedding day adds so much to the quality and quantity of images you can take on that day which (hopefully) is a once-in-a-lifetime event for your clients.

This book does not cover so much about Engagement photos, group formals, or the marketing of your services (although these topics are covered briefly).

I also recommend "The Best of Wedding Photography" by Bill Hurter.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most..........2005-10-25

Get this one! There are scads of average books out there on every subject in photography. Most are dry, dull and a waste of ink and paper. This one opens a window into the soul of the author (well, the photographer.. I think the actual writer was the co-author.) I have the distinct impression this is an expression of joy and enthusiasm from someone who started by doing what she loved and then slowed down long enough to write about it.

    Book Description

Portrait photography is one of the most challenging of all the photographic specialties. The person is right there--it seems so easy! But great portraits aren’t just about what the subject looks like. It’s about how they see themselves. Great people photography is about photography...and about understanding people. The Art of People Photography shows photographers how to reveal the person behind the portrait. From the basics of choosing a camera and lens, to understanding composition, lighting, depth of field, exposure, and printing, and finally, to learning how to break the rules and capture the real personality of any subject, authors Bambi Cantrell and Skip Cohen explain how to think and shoot outside the box. Successful portrait photographers express their own artistic ideas while creating stunning, insightful portraits with personality and style. Here’s how to rise to that level of creativity and confidence.

just a long advertisment for some cheezy filters. the one gem tucked in the ad was, "expression is more important than technique" in portraiture. not that technique is unimportant, but expression is king.

save your money. i recommend bill peterson's "beyond portraiture" instead

5 out of 5 stars An opposing opinion to the previous reviewer..........2007-06-15

I think this is a very useful book. There is a lot of talk about getting to know your subject(s) and the intended use of the portrait. The statement, "Anyone can be a photographer - but only a few photographers are artists" is part of the introduction and sums up how the book has been developed. Clear explanations of how photographing men is different from women, along with tips for working with every age group from newborns to seniors and families, make this book a great place to start, especially if you are self-taught.

I am a Canon shooter and it was nice to have the lens setup that's referred to in the book, however, my husband shoots Nikon and he's found the guidance just as helpful as I have.

I liked this book enough that I've ordered the others by these two authors.

    2 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2007-06-10

I am a professional photographer and have a library of photo books many by the Amphoto publisher. I own the first Cantrell book on weddings, it is the best wedding book I own. Unfortunately, however, this one does not match up to her first effort. While the book has much detail about equipment, camera settings, and technique, the photos used for illustration are far too standard. Too many look like they are from the PPA (Professional Photographer magazine) and not the style that customers are looking for today. While I admit that there is plenty of good information about equipment, technique, and personal development, I take exception to an author who takes payment from a corporation to essentially advertise the product.. I am totally turned off by the shameless promotion throughout the book in both text and photographers for the Canon system. It is obvious that there were promotion dollars or equipment paid to the photographer for development of this book. shame on you Bambi.
