Great introduction to Applied Kinesiology.......2003-04-12
Robert Frost's AK manual is lean and to the point. It gives the history of AK, how AK is used in Europe and the USA, theory into the mechanisms of the reflexes used in AK, basic therapeutic procedures with explainations, and clear diagrams of the basic muscle tests and the appropriate reflexes. A perfect complement to the 100 hour course. I recommend this book to any student or practioner in health care who is looking to expand their skill set.

Save your money.......2004-03-24
This book was required as supporting material for an OT program. This book is full of mistakes and the diagrams are very hard to follow, misleading, and/or mislabeled. Truly a waste of money, save your money and check it out from the school library and photocopy the darn thing if you have to use it. Useless is an understatement.
Clinical Kinesiology -- Save Your Money!.......2003-10-29
This text book is an abomination. It is riddled with mistakes, often incomprehensible in its explanations, and fairly useless as a reference book. Its schematics and diagrams are consistently mislabeled and confusing. The salient points of each chapter are either obscured or misguided. Avoid this mess; don't waste your time or your money.
Never again will I use this for a textbook.......2003-05-28
I made the mistake of selecting this book to teach functional anatomy and kinesiology. There are numerous mistakes and emphasis in the text is on information that is not pertinent for PTAs. The author neglects other information that is essential for PTA students. I ended up trashing the book midway through the semester and creating my own "text". I am just sorry my students paid hard-earnded money for this text that they will never use as a reference.
Reviews from students were summarized as a "D".
An easy textbook to read.......2003-01-18
Of all the books I've had for Anatomy for the PTA, this book has been very easy to read. If it weren't for some major mistakes(the diagram of the hip bone is way off),I'd keep the book forever as a refernce book.
Extremely disappointing........2002-06-21
This book has been very poorly edited. It's layout is haphazard and its anatomical illustrations are so poorly rendered as to make them essentially useless. This is surprising given that the publisher (F.A. Davis) is responsible for a large body of excellent medical texts and reference works.
This text, now in its 3rd edition, requires 3 full pages of errata. The errata sheets have been produced locally by teachers and students, not supplied by the publisher. My experience would indicate that a complete errata listing could run to 5 or 6 pages, or more!
The accompanying lab manual is somewhat useful, but suffers greatly from the same childishly drawn illustrations that are frequently inaccurate, or simply too badly drawn to be helpful.

Perfect.......2007-02-23
My book came in perfect condition exactly as promised and it was shipped and received quickly.
Great Book!.......2006-06-05
This book is excellent. It deals with all the regions/sections of the body in detail, gives excellent explanations and even 'extra information.' The laboratory exercises at the end of the chapter are also helpful. Drawings may be a bit unclear but the photographs are great.I wanted to purchase just one kinesiology textbook and I think this was an excellent choice.
A must for any health professional.......2000-05-25
I love his book because it explains the function of each and every area of the body so well. It makes studying muscle OIAs and palpation so easy. Very detailed explanation of the use and structure of the skeletal system. It gives better understanding on the pathological conditions in the bones and soft tissues in each area of the body. I would compare this book with Joint Structure & Function A Comprehensive Analysis by Cynthia Norkin and Pamela Levangie. Both books explains muscular and skeletal functions but Brunnnstrom covers a lot more areas of the musculoskeletal system.
Book Description
A practical and reliable diagnostic tool that has emerged over the past twenty-five years, kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of bodily motion, especially muscle movements and their relationship to our body systems. Viewing the body as a balanced triad of structure, chemistry, and mentality, applied kinesiology gauges muscle response to pinpoint underlying physical problems. Within 30 minutes, a competent kinesiologist can evaluate bodily functions and provide a readout on the workings of the glands, organs, lymphatic system, circulatory and nervous systems, circulation, and muscle-bone structure.
Applied Kinesiology demonstrates how this technique can be of practical use for everyone.

Excellent practical work.......2005-12-26
I used this book to get a better background in applied kinesiology principles to help me with my research into the body mechanics and kinesiology of the martial arts. I am a karate, kung fu, and kali/escrima teacher who has developed some ideas especially about punching and kicking techniques, so I thought I'd make a few comments on that, as this book was very helpful in discussing current theory and practice and helping me to sharpen my own ideas on the subject, especially in regard to the analysis of rapid-fire punching techniques.
There are several mechanisms that need to be discussed. The first thing is that rapid-fire punching requires instantaneously unloading the intrafusal muscle spindles by the use of contralateral inhibition of flexor-extensor pairs. This is a well-understood spinal cord reflex, and just means that muscle viscosity and normal muscle-tension dynamics are inhibited and optimized. In terms of the neural pathways, this is mediated by two nerve tracts, the neospinalthalamic and the paleospinalthalamic tracts, or the alpha and gamma motor efferent systems, respectively. But basically, in muscle kinesiology circles, this is known as a "plyometric jerk," and is one way that basketball players use to jump higher.
The second thing is that after the first punch, there are released massive shaking forces which propagate through the various musculo-skeletal systems in a quasi-resonant fashion which can be used to facilitate the acceleration and launch of the next punch in the sequence. These, as you might expect, are very difficult dynamics to control, being nonlinear in their behavior, but it is possible to re-sequence the muscles involved in such a punching series to take advantage of them. I have had some success in setting up "standing waves" to take advantage of this phenomenon. Standing wave may not be quite right, from a neuromuscular control standpoint, as it is perhaps more like stochastic resonance, since it can be shown that the muscle fibers use a process known as recruitment which is quite statistical mechanical in nature.
Third, the overall muscle mechanics of such a sequence must use a massive, avalanche-like, pulse-oriented "starting focus" to launch the technique, after which it essentially goes "ballistic" for most of the trajectory of the punch, until final termination when normal "ending focus" is applied. From a practical standpoint, this means the punches are bouncing off the endpoints of the punch, which are strongly focused, but with nothing much in the way of tension in-between. This method also eliminates the wasteful, continuous power-utilization curve that most even very experienced black belts use when they punch. This is okay for a one or two punch combo, but not for much beyond that, because this method of coordinating the muscles will impede the necessary fast switching constants that the nervous pathways require to make this work. The neural pathways involved in this are known as the alpha and gamma-motor efferent systems, and their workings are well understood by neurobiologists.
good overview of what to expect from applied kinesiology.......2003-11-20
This book is designed to give readers an introduction to muscle testing used in health assessment and treatment. It is written for the patient rather than as a guide for practitioners, and thus focuses mainly on what treatments are like, what they can accomplish, and what can be expected from these approaches. This book is useful for its intended purpose, but doesn't provide a clear understanding of the science behind kinesiology or ways of developing skills as a practitioner to make therapeutic use of this.
Diagnosis of the human body........2000-05-22
I found yhis book very informative, it gives interesting accounts on every part of the body by recognising responses in the muscles. It gives plain explanations and easy guidedlines to follow, this would assist a student to be able to recognise step by step and help them to recieve messages about healthy or unhealthy parts of the body.' It would also help them to form an opinion as how to help the patient and follow thru with medication in erbel therepies and also make the patient aware of the bodies functions. This book has been thouroughly written with thought, and easy to read and understand without getting very technical.

Nonlinear Solid Mechanics: A Continuum Approach for Engineering
ASIN: 9812387358 |
Book Description
Soft biological tissues often undergo large (nearly) elastic deformations that can be analyzed using the nonlinear theory of elasticity. Because of the varied approaches to nonlinear elasticity in the literature, some aspects of the subject may be difficult to appreciate. This book attempts to clarify and unify those treatments, illustrating the advantages and disadvantages of each through various examples in the mechanics of soft tissues. Applications include muscle, arteries, the heart, and embryonic tissues.

Good introductory book.......2001-09-10
If you are interested in learning Kinesiology then this is a good start. It tells all the different forms of Kinesiology and has some useful self-help tips
Very little in way of how to........1999-11-05
Offers more information regarding what is available regarding the different branches of kinesiology rather than a how-to-manual. As a visual person I felt the drawings left alot to be desired.
Excellant information on the wide field of Kinesiology.......1997-12-09
This book gives the reader a broad look at the field of kinesiology and its many different schools of thought, which, while all are related, are very individual. I particularily liked the overview on "how" this works, and the section on spindle mechanisms. Filled with self-help tips on massage and exercises as related to muscle testing. A good place to begin to expand your knowledge of the fields of kinesiology. I'm already signed up for a workshop in Edu-K!
This is a useful overview of kinesiology for health/wellness.......1997-03-29
This easily read book presents a good overview of the kinesiology/ energy balancing techniques that may be used to BALANCE ENERGY, improve health and enhance Wellness. It is probably the most thorough and clear of the books which explain the history and techniques of kinesiology for lay people. Quite useful in terms of easily practiced techniques as well as providing resources for further study of specific kinesiology/acupressure systems such as Touch For Health, Three in one Concepts, One Brain, Educational Kinesiology, etc
Customer Reviews:
I love the premise of this book!!!.......2004-12-18
The way that Whisenant has spelled out the relationship between the myths and the meridians is brilliant and illuminating!!!
Impressive with a different protocol........2000-11-22
Psychological Kinesiology espouses concepts that can be monumental in their impact. In 1998,I contracted idiopathic thrombocytopenic pupura(ITP).This disease is considered fatal unless you have your spleen removed, undergo bone marrow transplants and take steroids the rest of your life. I refused to do this as the treatment is only 50% effective and does not correct the cause(idiopathic).I went to a practioner that used the pricnciples outlined in Psychological Kinesiology who found that I had a dysfunctional assumption. This condition is discussed and explained in the book. Using these concepts, I am now cured of ITP and am still well after two years. Did not have a splenectomy, etc. Anyone who reads this treatise with an open mind will have a new explanation of how and why we get sick and get well.If you are interested in your true health status, this is a must. It literally saved my life.
One of three books that have impacted me in a profound way........2000-07-07
Never in my life had I thought that I stored within my body information, even commands that would dictate themes or courses in my life. So there has to be something that integrates the whole body. Hence, I had to trust my body to know what would be best for it in my transformation and evolution. What "I" am is not just the thoughts, but my core beliefs as they are registered in the tissues and energy systems of my being. This understanding launched my path to self-observation, and I have been doing this for eight years. I am now sensitively aware that diet, toxins, exercise, thoughts, relationships, activities of work and recreation all impinge on the outcome of my life through my body and its communication pathways as they are clearly explained in this book.
As Dr. Whisenant elucidates, if one can accept responsibility for the entire outcome of one's life from a non-judgmental stance, one can use the technology of Psychological Kinesiology to move into a position of directing life instead of passively suffering from it. One can realize that dysfunctional assumptions are neither good nor bad.
I am not to blame if I unknowingly precipitate misfortune and I am not to be lauded if I unknowingly attract a windfall. But if I understand the intimate energetic architecture involved, these subtle ebbs and flows can be utilized to manifest the best experience.
The author has stated that: "We don't think with the brain; we think with the body which happens to include the brain." This point was driven home to me early on when a specific example that was used in the book applied directly to me. The instructional example involved having two flat tires in one month on brand new tires. And it actually happened to me. I could have swiftly written this off to a stroke of bad luck, but by looking deeper into the causative network, I was able to make changes in my life that went significantly beyond the functioning of my vehicle.
This book allowed me to have a much deeper understanding of methodology of applied kinesiology. One can use this material as healer to work on others and one can also use these methods to work on oneself. Furthermore, one can even use this understanding as a guide in the selection of other health and life enhancement practitioners.
Don't pass up this opportunity to have these tools and this understanding to take control of and enhance your life.
Incomprehensible.......2000-04-30
I do not have a training in kinesiology but did not realise that I needed to have one to make any sense of this book. I do have a good understanding of energy and meridian therapies in general, especially acupuncture.
To my mind this book was a casual, sweeping, ill constructed overview of what may have been a marvelous new meidian medicine field. It has gaping holes in its subject matter so that without professional training it made no sense at all. It borrowed heavily from other disciplines - no crime there- but offered them up unquestioned and crude. For example a few, random yoga exercises, a smattering of Rechian type psychology, a crude analysis of personality types. All of which would be far better learned in books written by people truly knowledable in their field.
I so wanted this book to help me. I need the help it claimed to offer. But it was quite useless. I'm only glad that Amazon accepts returns - although I spent a fair bit on airmail postage to the UK and back I was still able to minimise a big downside.
One of the very poorest books I have bought in any of these related topics and with a huge price tag!
Inspires Creativity and Pushes the Clinical Envelope.......1998-07-21
Dr. Whisenant's book, Psychological Kinesiology: Changing the Body's Beliefs, offers an integration of western and eastern philosophical paradigms and clinical protocols. His lively story telling is illuminating for the lay and professional reader. When used as a resource for university classes, the classes become animated as students engage in discourse, debate, and consideration of theory and clinical practice. Dr. Whisenant's book is an excellent reference for those clinicians and clients who choose to do the work of therapy within a mind-body-spirit orientation.
