Customer Reviews:
Lonely Planet San Francisco.......2006-11-04
Loved seeing the city of San Fancisco after reading about the local neighborhood haunts. Lonely Planet has long been my first choice of Travel Guides. This one was good, although it lacked some of the overall insights that I have liked in other LP guide books, and had some of the poorest photography ever edited for such a scenic city.
I recommend the guide books suggestion of renting a mountain bike and taking in the sites of Golden Gate Park and heading out to Salsalito via the Golden Gate Bridge and taking the ferry back into town.
The only guidebook you need (just add a detailed Muni bus route map and you are set for weeks of fun).......2006-07-05
I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to guidebooks. I don't believe that there is one-size-fits all guidebook, and when I travel, I get an arsenal of books and select the top three to use on the road. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I needed no other guidebook to San Francisco! As a general rule, Lonely Planet guides are the most compact and info-packed books on the market, and this guide is unparalleled. It fits neatly in any purse or backpack and the only add-on I would recommend for your trip is a detailed Muni bus route map.
Even without a detailed map, this guide can get you all around the city. Every attraction, restaurant, and hotel is listed indexed and numbered on a half dozen neighborhood maps in the back of the book. There's no need for detailed directions because the maps allow the traveler to plan their own route.
The attractions? Wow! You get all your essential tourist hot spots, plus info on alternative forms of sports and recreation, hidden shopping sites, stores which have house cats or dogs, free wine and cheese at poetry readings, theater reviews, upscale/campy adult entertainment, and much more. San Francisco is well-known for dining options, and this book has the most listings of any guidebook. Nightlife is given extensive coverage, so that anyone can find sites of interest, from late-night coffee shops to Latin dance clubs to sports bars. Of course, a site such as City Search can augment your search for good eats and nightlife.
The book can be read in a number of ways. It offers a week full of suggested itineraries which make a great starting place. The reader can also search by neighborhood or by type of excursion desired, and complete public transportation information is provided. The guide even offers limited information on side trips outside the city proper. A complete index to all attractions, hotels, and restaurants is included.
Don't travel without the Lonely Planet, especially when visiting San Francisco.
Lonely Planet is the way to go!.......2006-03-17
I travel a lot and a Lonely Planet book of my destination is always in my carry-on. This SF book was very helpful for my sister and I who recently went on a 'girls shopping weekend' up there (from the L.A. area). We did manage to find all the great shops (thanks to the 'Shopping' section) and then have time for some sightseeing on the side. All the directions, maps, addresses, opening times, admission costs, etc. were accurate and precise. The transportation maps are especially helpful in a city like San Francisco where a rental car is not only not necessary but can definitely be a burden (not much parking!). The book also provided interesting facts about historical sites such as Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. I recommend this book to anyone who is traveling to San Francisco whether it be for a weekend or a month or anywhere in between. There is enough stuff in this book to keep you busy, I promise! And it's very easy to use and has a nice Index in the back where everything is possible to find =)
grain of salt.......2005-12-29
I used this guidebook for my first visit to San Francisco and liked where it took me. I just moved here and needed to acclimate. I think it's geared more for younger tourists that are less set in their ways. I wanted to see more than just San Francisco and used the Golden Gate Trailblazer to fill in places to hike around. They were a nice duo to carry around. After two weeks, I'm finally getting the hang of it and less dependent on the maps.
Bulky and mostly useless.......2005-12-27
I know that's a very sweeping subject title but I am afraid its very relevant from the perspective of the average traveler who will pick this book up. The maps are horribly designed. Often you need to go back and forth to make sense. In the end, I just had to print out Google maps to actually get about the city. Too much information and little organization. Probably not written for the tourist but rather for the resident of the city.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best tour books I've ever read........2005-08-28
This book has everything you need to navigate -- and have fun in -- San Francisco: a section devoted to "Highlights" gives you ideas for what you mustn't miss; "Sights and Activities" covers just about everything else. Plus there are solid suggestions as to where to eat, sleep and have fun. One of the best parts of the book, however, is the way that every recommended activity, restaurant or hotel is clearly cross-referenced to the included maps. The writing is clear, occasionally wry and always frank. Plus, this compact li'l guy will fit into your pocket! I enjoyed SF more because I had this book as my companion; I cannot think of a higher compliment for a travel book.
Very useful if you plan a short stay.......2005-08-05
I was in S.Francisco for a few days, and I found this little guide extremy useful and nicely done. In particular, in a short space it gives good recommendations for sightseeing, museums and arts, music, local cuisine, etc.
A must if you plan a quick visit, or a short tour around the bay.

Customer Reviews:
If You Only Take One Book With You.......2007-10-17
This book fits in a jacket pocket or a purse. Spot-on restaurant recommendations, useful maps, good itinerary ideas. Much more useful than my brother's Frommers. Very helpful overall. Every restaurant I ate at out of here was a palate pleaser. Only wish the maps could show where the hills are, have the BART routes, etc.
You really will discover more of the city, with less space used in your knapsack.......2007-07-31
The Lonely Planet Encounter guide to San Francisco follows the snappy, concise format of the other books in the series--a highlight chapter, followed by sections (by neighborhood) on where to Shop, Eat, See, and Play, and a conclusion with page-long snapshot essays and details on transportation, history, and practicalities. The opening chapter is a list of 11 top excursions in the city, with parenthetical references to the page number where specific restaurants and sights are discussed. Even the back cover is a useful to six exciting adventures--vintage shopping, club-hopping in SoMa, writing Beat poetry, visiting the Mission, strolling bayside, and visiting foggy Alcatraz.
As a Southern California resident, I visit San Francisco annually. I've used dozens of different guidebooks, and I thought I had a good handle on the city, but author Alison Bing has written about a treasure trove of smaller museums, shops, and entertainment options. This guide is especially useful for the traveler who has the lay of the land and wants to uncover more gems in the city. The closing chapter also has some great suggested reading titles for anyone looking to explore San Francisco a little deeper.

Perfect Book for a 3 day trip to the Bay Area.......2004-05-23
This was the perfect book for my recent 3 day trip to the Bay Area. The fold out map was durable and easy to navigate. The size and shape of the book made it easy for me to tuck away in my jacket pocket or purse. The content was accurate and helpful. I was able to find and hit the highlights quickly and independently. The lists of walks in the city was particularly helpful.

Customer Reviews:
The anti-Zagat of San Francisco dining.......2003-02-13
For a city which makes its living from tourism and one claiming the highest number of restaurants per capita in the US, San Francisco is surprisingly under-represented when it comes to dining guides. So I am glad to find this (hopefully) regularly-updated series coming onto the scene. While it is by no means the ideal guide to dining out in the City (it is not comprehensive nor authoritative enough), it offers a wholesome alternative to those looking for dining options in San Francisco without resorting to Zagat, another recent but surprisingly successful entrant to the market, with its ridiculous and inconsistent point system. (The fact that the Zagat has become so successful here points(!) I believe to the lack of alternatives I alluded to above.)
So what do I like about the Lonely Planet? It's got pictures, for starters. Pictures convey their own information about a place's ambience, character, and clientele. Plus they make the guide more user-friendly and pleasant to flip through. (Why don't more guides include them?) Second, it devotes a good half-page to every establishment that it covers, doing it enough justice. Third, it doesn't dumb down by resorting to a point system, but gives properly worded descriptions, thereby allowing readers to arrive at their own conclusions rather than having it made for them. Finally, and this is the best part, it groups the reviews by neighborhood - with maps included. This just makes so much more sense than an alphabetical listing. After all, people don't generally make dining decisions based on the starting alphabet of a restaurant's name, but on where they are or want to be at a particular point in time.
Given that it is one in a global series, I was initially worried that the quality of the research wouldn't be up-to-par, especially vis-a-vis residents of the area. But the reviews and selections are surprisingly decent. I don't live in the city myself, so am not the best person to pass judgement on this, but I visit fairly often and find the descriptions to be generally reliable. Kudos to the authors and to Lonely Planet.
What kind of improvements would I like to see in future editions? Extend the coverage beyond the city to cover some of the greater Bay Area. But overall you're off to a good start. Keep the guide current.
Where to Eat What in San Franciscy - a must-read!.......2001-08-15
This evocative guide points readers towards not just *where* to eat, but *what* to eat. An important distinction, one often not made by Zagat and other restaurant boosters. The reviews are refreshing - locals talking about their neighborhood favorites. Pretty decent coverage of dot.com expense account junket splurges too. Escape zagatization of cheaper ethnic eateries with this guide to the true and amazing values that the city west of the bay has to offer. Buen provecho!

San Francisco City Map - One try.......2000-12-11
This map is in a handy format and it is water proofed. It contains 6 different maps, which show you different parts of the town. But the problem is, that the map doesn't show the busses and subway lines, just the cable car lines. It were really useful, because so you can use your cheap MUNI card for public transportation and your map to discover this great town.
I would recommand the Let's Go Map, because the map shows you the public transportation.

Book Description
"Why did churches have steeples?," "Who wore platform shoes?," and "Did people take baths?" are just some of the tricky questions answered in this delightful book about long ago.
Customer Reviews:
I wonder why there were no Jews in the Middle Ages.......2002-01-22
The illustrations are wonderful. But every culture in the world, from Incas to Arabs to Englishmen, get at least one illustration and one explanation. There's an illustration of a church, a minaret and a Moslem school. Jews were a strong presence in the Middle Ages throughout the world, so the omission is glaring. I suppose the striking difference would be the extent to which Jews approached a near-100-percent literacy, even then. But given that the merchant who might have sold the cloth to that woman with the cone-shaped hat might have been Jewish, perhaps it would have been truly illustrative of Medieval life, since Jews were required to wear distinctive clothing wherever they went.
The effect is to show a book with deficiencies.
Excellent picture book for a peek into the middle ages!.......1999-03-29
Both my children (ages four and nine) love this book! It has great visuals and excellent explantions about questions kids ask. Of course, they loved reading about how people didn't bath and threw their waste out the windows! They argue over who gets to read it in the car. We paid much more for the book in England! I would also recommend this book for older students (grades 4-8) with limited reading abilities

Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2003-01-31
This "book" is marketed as "hardcover". What it really is is low quality decorated envelopes (more like paper) bound in a decorated cardboard cover. The quality is poor. This is definitely something you could make on your own and it would be nicer!
