Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Outdated book!!! Hopefully a newer edition comes out soon!.......2006-04-18
I just got back from Peru where my husband and I hiked the trail to Machu Picchu. We brought this book with us and found it to be very inaccurate. I do not necessarily blame the author as there have been many, many changes in policies regarding hiking the Inca Trail this past year (2005) and there are bound to be even more changes in the near future as Peru tries to balance income from tourism with preserving the trail and forest. In addition, pricing for hostels in Cusco have drastically changed and I COMPLETELY disagreed with the author's food reviews. The best hot chocolate in Cusco is certainly NOT the Swiss owned place on Cuenta San Blas but rather I found, after testing many hot chocolates all around the city, that the best hot chocolate was a corner restaurant on Cuenta San Blas and Carmen Alto (on the corner of Plaza San Blas). Also, the best chicken burger was actually a 3 sole burger that I bought in a restaurant on a side street (Plateros) a few steps from the Plaza de Armas. The author tended to choose the more expensive restaurants to put in his book, but I found the food in the cheaper places to be much better. Just down Plateros from the chicken burger place, there are two markets which were better than the ones at the end of Ave de Sol which the author recommended. They were just as willing to bargain, had a larger variety of things, and were only a few hundred feet from the Plaza de Armas instead of 12 blocks away like the ones on the Ave de Sol. To top it off, Inkaray is a fantastic restaurant on the same street as the market and the chicken burger place that has 4 course meals for 12 soles! It was good food and lots of it for super cheap. It's about 4 blocks from the Plaza de Armas on Plateros, on the right hand side as you're leaving the plaza. It has handwritten referral signs in English posted on the windows from happy patrons...we didn't write a sign, but we agreed with each and every one of them. If you have a sweet tooth like me, I recommend the pancakes with banana and chocolate as a dessert, or for breakfast. At 6 soles, they're darn good and HUGE! Bottomline, this book was useful as far as the Incan history stuff and maps of Cusco, but was fairly useless for the nitty gritty stuff like prices, food, and Inca Trail hiking policies. Not a backpacker friend. I've heard that there might be a newer version. If so, I'd pick that one up instead.
a great guide book.......2005-09-22
I took this book and the Lonely Planet's on my recent trip to Peru, leaving the Insight Guide books at home. This book is much better in every respect to it's competitors. I only wish it had a section on the Colca Canyon. But for Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu, it's ideal.
Decent.......2005-08-10
I was hoping this book would have better descriptions of finding hikes in the Cusco area. The author seemed to like to share his political views. Overall there were some good travel tips, but you definately need a good travel guide to accomponany it.
Great guide, but don't let it be your only one.......2005-02-25
We bought this guide before going to Peru. We did hike the Inca trail and while very descriptive, this book does not replace a seasoned local guide.
Great Preparation for the Inka Trail to Machu Picchu.......2004-04-23
This book gives wonderful advice and preparation if you are going to hike on the Inka Trail to Machu Picchu. There is great advice for safety, route descriptions, and is best for preparation. Info is given on the history of the land, its people and culture, food, places to stay, as well as safety tips for health in the region.
However, as another reviewer said below, a professional tour guide would serve you well.
Overall a great guide for preparing to walk solo on an ancient and breathtaking trail.
Book Description
Seventeen-year-old Moses Schallenberger wanted to go to California. In 1844, he joined a wagon train to do just that. There was only one problem: Nobody had ever made it to California by wagon before. For a year, he and
50 others struggled through high mountain passes and across wide rushing rivers, enduring dangerous encounters with Indians and buffalo, inclement weather, difficult terrain, near-starvation and disaster.Ultimately, Moses and his friends succeeded–becoming the first pioneers to cross the Sierra Nevadas by wagon. Today, the trail they blazed is a major route into California.

The Pioneers Go West worked well in my class.......2000-07-08
I have used The Pioneers Go West as a literature set in my 5th grade classroom for two years now and will continue to do so. The students like the realism and adventure of the story. It was also a good supplement to our study of the Westward Movement. I recommend it to any teacher or student of history!

Westward ho!
The Golly Sisters are heading west. They've got new dresses and the best show on either side of the Mississippi. But can they keep their act together long enough to get this show on the road?
Customer Reviews:
Kids young and old love the Gollys!.......2006-10-16
I'm in my 20s, and this is still one of my favorite books! The Golly Sisters are delightfully quirky, imaginative, and believable. Two irrepressible performers on the road with their act, May-May and Rose make every day a hilarious adventure. The illustrations perfectly complement the clever stories, adding wonderful subtle detail (the horse's reactions to the sisters' predicaments are priceless!) Read it to your kids or pick it up when you need a good chuckle, this book is a sure winner.
Great for Kid and Adult !!.......2004-01-15
My son and I have been reading "The Golly Sisters" books as part of his nightly first grade home reading. They are very entertaining, easy for a young reader, and wonderful illustrations. He enjoys reading them over and over and as a parent I don't mind listening again.
They are delightful characters who find themselves in such unique and Hilarious situations with their horse and wagon. These are not like other sappy kid books,... very clever!!!!!
Hilarious stories for kids who love to laugh.......1999-10-21
My kids are in high school and they still remember the antics of the Golly sisters, siblings with funny adventures and fancy dreams! Along with Amelia Bedelia books, the Golly sisters encouraged my kids to begin reading at a very early age just to relive the antics on their own without Mommy's help. Highly recommend the Golly sisters with a whoop and a holler!
Book Description
Narcissa Whitman and her husband, Marcus, went to Oregon as missionaries in 1836, accompanied by the Reverend Henry Spalding and his wife, Eliza. It was, as Narcissa wrote, “an unheard of journey for females.”
Narcissa Whitman kept a diary during the long trip from New York and continued to write about her rigorous and amazing life at the Protestant mission near present-day Walla Walla, Washington. Her words convey her complex humanity and devotion to the Christian conversion and welfare of the Indians. Clifford Drury sketches in the circumstances that, for the Whitmans, resulted in tragedy.
Eliza Spalding, equally devout and also artistic, relates her experiences in a pioneering venture. Drury also includes the diary of Mary Augusta Dix Gray and a biographical sketch of Sarah Gilbert White Smith, later arrivals at the Whitman mission.
Customer Reviews:
Thanks, K Rico.......2003-12-03
As a great (x3) grandson of Eliza Spalding, I found this book (and "Memoirs of the West", by Eliza's daughter) to be very hard to put down. When I did, all I wanted to do was tell my daughters about the women in their family. I came across this book doing a search of ancestors, and benefitted greatly from the work done by Karen Rico, whose review is above.
This is a story of tough people, who, amazingly, held on to their religious convictions through every test possible, even the threat of ugly death. Once again, truth is more outrageous than fiction.
where wagons could go.......2000-07-19
As a great-great-greatdaughter of eliza hart spalding, I found the book very informative and enlightening. I never realized the perils and problems that being the first white women in a land of natives that could be encountered. Both Narcissa and Eliza had courage and strength even though they seemed to have different personalities. The author was very informative and he backed his findings whenever possible with historical fact and copies of letters and diaries. I found that I was able to visualize the trek across the country and the life that these women had to endure by being missionaries. The author even noted the problems between Catholics and Protestants during that time.
Two Women Empowered.......2000-04-01
As Eliza Spalding's great-great grandaughter, I was deeply moved by the account given of Eliza and Narcissa's journey into the rugged and primitive Northwest territory in 1836. In our current age of technology, where knowledge of the unknown comes to us in full color without direct experience, it is unimaginable to consider two young women, driven from family and loved ones by their devout spritual quest, brave enough to endure the rigors of exploration. Mr. Drury's words both enlightened me and filled me with pride to be connected to one of these relatively unknown heroines. I will recommend this book to my high school students, to draw on the example of the courageous role modeling illustrated by the lives of both Eliza and Narcissa. In light of their fearless independence and their unparalled commitment to a cause greater than themselves, they teach us much about the human spirit. One may need to rethink the origin of the women's liberation movement as the pages of this book are turned, revealing the strength and enduring power of Eliza and Narcissa.
