Good General Guide.......2007-05-07
This guide,as will all DK guides, provides good, basic information on the most popular sites in each area. I suspect that the material is reused from other DK gudies.
What this product lacks is good, detailed information about information that would be relevant to cruisers. For example, there are sections that deal with cruise selection, packing, etc.; but there is no information about the port facilities, distance from the port to the main part of town, local public transportation options, etc. Apparently, it is assumed that passengers will book shore excursions from the cruise line and not go off on their own.
This limits the guide's usefulness for those who would like to simply ramble through a town and get a little closer to the local culture. This is possible in many European ports, but not all. (Passengers will need some help getting from the port of Civitavecchia to Rome, but what about Naples?)
Not worth the money.......2007-04-14
I bought this book hoping it would help plan our days in port for an upcoming trip. The book only dedicates about 2 to 4 pages per port of call. It does have a lot of pictures (which aren't bad and will be useful for identifying the sites), but overall it isn't much help and doesn't provide enough information to really be useful. You can find more information just on the internet.
What a disappointment.......2007-04-06
In the past, I've had great success with Eyewitness Travel Guides--but after taking the Cruise Guide to Europe and the Meditarranean with me on vacation, I was very disappointed. Heavy, shallow and lacking any useful port information, I found I left it in my room most of the time. I'd have preferred a guide that told me some useful logistics about each port (like how to get to any of the sites mentioned), and suggested itineraries for each location. I would not recommend this book at all.
Pretty boring.......2007-02-16
Its a pretty boring book, its exactly like the 2001 version...its 1 page longer than the 2001 version. So save your money and buy the older version or check it out at the library. I was expecting it to be more detailed, its just so basic and elementary. I was disappointed to say the least.

Too many pictures, not enough information.......2007-10-08
I expected more from this book after reading some of the reviews. I do really like the diagrams of the ports and some of the maps seem helpful but other maps are bad with scale and distances just plain wrong. I have also found many spelling errors... who edited this?
My biggest complaint though is the pictures outnumber the information. Some pages have 4-5 photos making each one so small you can't see much of interest in them. And the photos aren't that good to begin with, many actually look like scanned postcards.
This book seems to be a very unprofessional attempt at a travel log. There are other books on the market which do a much better job... don't buy the book just for the diagrams of the ports!
Read this book.......2007-09-12
This book goes into the history of each area. It is very comprehensive and well written. I learned a lot and enjoyed it in the process. The pictures are excellent and each area has a must see list. This book would be a great asset when deciding which excursion to go on. It will also let understand more of what you are seing while you are there.
New edition covers the bases.......2007-05-15
I thought this new edition was very good. It has the info on shore excursions but also provides tips on getting around independently in all the ports. The excellent color photos and maps add greatly to getting a handle on the attractions and focusing on what you what to see. The background on the Mediterranean is also quite helpful. How can you go to this destination without knowing, and wanting to know, the fascinating history of this region.
History Book not a Tour Guide.......2007-05-15
We are planning a Western Med Cruise and wanted to get information on the different ports of call. The description of the book led us to believe this was the book we needed. What we received was a book that provided an extensive history lesson on the Med!
If you want to know about the different ports and what to see and what not to see find another book.
Not enough helpful info.......2007-01-10
This is more a history book then a guide for where to go - when to take a guided tour and when you can strike off on your own - waste of money - need practical information - left my copy in the ship library.

The Book to Use.......2007-02-09
I'm very pleased with the Eyewitness Travel Guides in general, and specifically with the Europe & Mediterranean edition. I especially like the Survivors Guide and Traveler Needs sections. Other highlights include the wonderful graphics and color illustrations, compact size, and a unique ability to not only recommend the most important things to see and do, but also point out the unique and often off the beaten path places.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written, unhelpful advice, excellent pictures.......2006-03-18
I am thoroughly disappointed with the information in this book. I was looking for a guide that would help me with all of my shore excursions. Instead, each of my cities have half of a page or so of basic information.
The book is poorly written. Parts of it are incomprehensible. It is written for the British traveller but is not written in the Queen's English! Other parts are filled with travel agent gibberish.
The pictures were outstanding, as is true of most Insight Guides. I was just hoping that with the Discovery Channel affiliation that the content would have improved. I was wrong.
"All the information you will ever need on cruising the Med".......2006-01-05
Of the many guide and reference books that mention cruising in the Mediterranean, I think I may have come across the ultimate reference book on the subject -- "Mediterranean Cruises", a compilation of expertise from a number of well-known journalists, editors and contributors.
Like other reference guides, this book arms the reader with all the information required to decide on when and where one might select as cruise destinations within the Mediterranean. However, apart from the detailed and accurate descriptions of places, sites, cities and towns, I would also recommend this book solely on the quality of its photography. Should any college or university offer credit- hours on Mediterranean Cruises, here is a book that, in my mind, would certainly qualify as required reading.
However, I wouldn't suggest the book be read like a textbook. You may want to pick and choose your areas or places of interest. Here is where you will find the book's index to be second to none. And, while surprises are oftentimes pleasant, I believe when it comes to cruising, being prepared with as much information as possible prior to departure can prevent an unpleasant cruise experience. Having taken several Mediterranean cruises years ago with my family, I would have welcomed having this "bible" handy during those preparations.
Like all other Insight Guides, in addition to providing detailed maps and superb descriptions of all destinations, this book offers its readers a wealth of travel tips. If I may borrow the motto from the Boy Scouts, I believe anyone who reads "Mediterranean Cruises" prior to actually taking one will certainly be prepared.

Includes some information that I didn't find elsewhere.......2004-08-24
While I have to agree with the previous reviewer that the Ship Itineraries section of this book could easily have been dipensed with, I did find some value in this book, taken as it was. The most major ports have a map (not detailed) that gives you some idea of the locations of major sites of interest in relation to each other. I did find this helpful in planning what it was reasonable to expect to be able to get to. It gives an opinion on what ports are best explored on your own, and which are best seen through a purchased excursion. It also gives some tips on getting around; but these are not always consistently detailed for each location. "Highlights Tours" are provided for those ports that you would want to explore yourself.
I found reading this book to be like sitting down and having a conversation with someone who knows these ports...not always detailed enough, or consistent in information, but interesting mostly because it gives you a bit of an opinion on which to base choices and some information that I didn't get elsewhere about the ports that I visited.
Not much beyond what's in cruise ship brochures.......2003-05-11
Pages 1-134 contain rapidly outdated information--best got off the web on what cruise lines go where.
Larry Ludmer then fails to deliver on his promise (p152, Cruising the Med) to indicate the location of each port and give some information on getting there. Two examples: Larry please tell us how equipped with a Eurail pass, one gets
1) from the Venice train station to the cruise terminal,
2) from Livorno cruise terminal to Florence??

Amazon.com
Known for their eye-catching design and generous use of color photos, DK Eyewitness guides are practically spilling over with all sorts of useful information for the traveler, and the cruise version is no different. The DK Eyewitness Guides Cruise Guide to Europe & the Mediterranean covers 23 countries and their sun-drenched ports of call. The guide is broken down into four sections including a chapter on the origins of cruise travel (from Cunard's Queen Elizabeth in the 1930s to the megaships of today) followed by a lengthy chapter on ports of call that describes in detail the dozens of Mediterranean ports catering to cruise ships. Not surprisingly, Italy, France, and the Greek Islands (with fabled resorts like Capri, St. Tropez, and Santorini) warrant the most space while lesser-known ports such as Amsterdam's The Hague, Malta's Valletta, and Croatia's Dubrovnik register just a few pages. North Africa and portions of the Middle East (Jerusalem, Beirut) are also covered. The Cruise Guide provides the nuts and bolt of cruising--everything from getting a cabin upgrade to avoiding motion sickness. The final chapter, a "Directory of Cruise Lines," lists more than 30 lines including Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Silversea. --Jill Fergus
Book Description
Expert advice on the best things to see and do in more than 70 ports of call -- make the most of your hours ashore.
Whether your port of call is in the popular cruising region of the Mediterranean or the majestic Caribbean, no other guidebook treats these ports in the detail and with the rich illustrations that DK Eyewitness Guide: Cruise Guide to Europe will provide. Make the most of your cruise holiday with tips for the best sights, shops, markets and restaurants in 80 ports of call from Oslo to Dubrovnik. The guide contains a Survival Guide that helps any traveler sort out the essential information of currency, transportation, and communications and includes practical advice on everything from choosing a cabin to ship etiquette.
Customer Reviews:
really good guidebook.......2001-09-17
I used this new guide while on a cruise in the Norwegian fjords. It was absolutely terrific - there was great information on Bergen and a wonderful diagram which showed the geology of the fjords. My next vacation will be to Portugal and the Mediterranean, and I'm using the guide to help plan my time in Lisbon and Seville. There seem to be plenty of useful tips on local markets and places of interest. And the beautiful pictures make the book a great souvenir.

Sub-standard in every respect...
I really have enjoyed the previous Dk Eyrewitness Travel Guides offered for various cities and countries but the 'Guide To Europe & The Mediterranean' offers nothing for the 'cruise' passenger and the affected port of calls. Maps are missing and details about the actual port itself are near non-existant.
This book reflects the need that Dk Eyewitness Travel Guides had nothing on the shelves for the cruiseship passenger. What they accomplished was taking previous written information on the cities one might venture to from the ship and then detailing that city. Simply taken from previous land guides. Missing is port information, port sidetrips, alternative sightseeing and how to get around once in port.
Boring and without content. Very uninformative. See FROMMERS for real travel guides about the wonderful world of cruising.
A sub-standard cruise book in every respect.

Few people can say they've sailed on more than 500 cruise ships, visited every major port of call in the world, and inspected nearly every cruise vessel in operation. With more than 35 years of cruising under his cap, Steven Stern is a certifiable sea dog with a wealth of personal experience to share.
Stern's Guide to the Cruise Vacation is an encyclopedic volume covering how to choose a cruise company, how to select your destination, how long to stay, what day-to-day seafaring is like, cruising for singles and with children, as well as cruising for joggers and tennis buffs. One chapter is devoted entirely to reviews of each cruise line and its vessels, including reprints of actual menus and day and evening activity plans, with photos when available. Stern uses "ribbon awards" like a star rating system to highlight the best of what each line has to offer in categories such as service, cabin spaciousness, activities and entertainment, good for singles, and food.
This guide also provides a list of all of the major ports of call with detailed recommendations for how to spend the usually short periods of 6 to 10 hours allotted for time ashore, including must-see sights and where to dine, swim, and soak up some sun. --Kathryn True

Overviews of famous women's lives.......2004-04-11
This installment in the Famous Lives Series is about famous women throughout history. Divided up into about twenty categories (such as Reformers, Caregivers, and Scientific minds) are short biographies of over one hundred women. The reader can read each biography on its own, read them by categories, or pick and choose which ones to read. This book is perfect for a quick overview of a famous woman's life. Anyone needing material in greater detail would do better to look elsewhere.
The book is teeming with illustrations. Almost everyone has her likeness included alongside her biography. Modern women have photographs; less recent women have color sketches.
The accompanying text is somewhat dry reading, redeemed only by its brevity and frequent subject changes. One interesting aspect of the book is the explanatory text beginning the part on Notorious Women, calling for the reader to look past the surface of the life story. "Some women are deservedly notorious for their crimes; in other cases their evil deeds have been exaggerated."
This is not exclusively a collection of great, admirable women. While the book does share the lives of many highly regarded females, it also includes several women who would make distinctly poor role models. I find this inclusion interesting, and humanizing - showing some flaws makes being a "famous woman" seem like less of an unattainable goal.
Excellent for middle school.......2000-04-01
If you are familiar with the Usbourne books, you'll know the format of this book without ever seeing it. It has 21 two page chapters. Each chapter has 3 to 6 women in it, with two or three paragraphs on each woman and lots of photos and illustrations. Perfect for the short attention span of middle schoolers and even appropriate for upper elementary children although they may have some trouble with the vocabulary. (Strong readers will do fine.) Exasperating to adults who would like more information on each person and who would like to see longer chapters on scientists, reformers and leaders instead of the chapters on notorious women and robbers and rogues. Lots of good information at an unbeatable price.
