    Book Description

Sharks are deadly predators with incredible natural advantages, from internal ears that detect the distant sounds of a struggling fish to nasal organs that hone in on the electrical fields of their prey. With startling, fact-packed text and spectacular photos, A Frenzy of Sharks reveals this creature's fascinating world. Readers meet graceful blue sharks, lightning-fast makos, burrowing angel sharks, and powerful hammerheads, as well as lesser-known wobbegongs and the ethereal manta rays. Going beyond sharks' thrilling life as hunters, the book captures a less-known of this remarkable animal; images showing them squirming inside egg sacs and effortlessly transporting human passengers reveal sharks a side of sharks rarely seen.

    5 out of 5 stars Sharks demystified.......2004-08-27

This is a wonderful introduction to sharks for young readers, with good photography. Howard Hall discusses the different types of sharks, how their feeding habits are reflected in their size and shape, how they see, swim, and locate prey. I was surprised to read that they can actually dislocate their jaws and thrust them forward past the end of their noses to bite their prey - and this happens so fast that it can only be seen on film in slow motion. Hall explains why the sharks close their eyes before the attack, that their eyes are so sensitive that they can see in near-darkness, and many other fascinating facts. Although the author uses some advanced terminology such as ovoviviparity, heterocercal tail, Ampullae of Lorenzini, etc, all words are well explained within the text and in a special glossary. It's a book worth having.

    4 out of 5 stars Scotland overview.......2007-06-12

Bought the book and found the maps with cite notations most helpful upon our visits--although there were many one ways that make getting from 1 place to another difficult at times, but you can't blame the book for that. Ate and stayed at some of their suggestions and we weren't disappointed.
Book heavily geared to the younger/hostel type of traveler--we were neither, but it still provided us with a lot of helpful suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars Good travel book.......2006-11-10

I have used lonely planet travel books on my many trips to South and Central America, and I have always been happy with their information and insight. This book on Scotland continues to support my happiness with this series of travel books.

4 out of 5 stars Very good travel guide.......2000-04-20

I found the Lonely Planet guide to be an excellent resource, especially when used with the Baedeker Scotland guide. LP offers truly helpful information, such as where to find maps, how to get back your VAT, weather and insect warnings... as well as brief but very descriptive chapters by region, including the oft-neglected Highlands.

Suggested itineraries are included, and the descriptions of sights, towns and historical destinations is wonderful.

While the guide is short on maps and history -- this is where the Baedeker guide does an excellent job -- it is full of useful and up-to-date information on travelling Scotland. I found my copy to be incredibly resourceful.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but a bit thin.......1999-07-06

Lonely planet books are usually a good companion both if you're clueless or experienced. In this case however, the book is a lot thinner than the Rough Guide for Scotland and offers less information. The LP looks better, but who cares about the looks of a travel book.

2 out of 5 stars Better options available.......2007-09-12

I found this book remarkably unhelpful. It was often maddeningly difficult to figure out which map went with which walk, and the walks were not described very clearly. Once I got to Scotland, there was a wealth of great walking books available everywhere, including the wonderful Cicerone guides, and the Pathfinder series published by the Ordinance Survey company, maker of the great topo maps in the UK. I ended up leaving my Lonely Planet guide in a cafe (on purpose), and using my newly purchased local guidebooks instead. The Cicerone and Pathfinder books are available on Amazon, and I highly recommend you skip the Lonely Planet and use these other books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Planning Your Walk in Scotland.......2006-05-08

"Walking in Scotland" is like many Lonely Planet guides: packed with useful information in a compact form. Scotland is a superb environment for walking, with a surprising amount of beautiful, even wild areas which offer a huge variety of potential hikes, from easy day hikes to multi-day treks.

"Walking in Scotland" starts with an introduction to Scotland itself, with short descriptions of climate, terrain, and history. This guide includes a run-down on the practicalities of travelling to and around Scotland.

The bulk of the guide covers Scotland by region, with short sections for urban walking in Glasgow and Edinbugh, and much longer sections on the Highlands and Northwest Scotland. The longer routes such as the West Highland Way and the more popular areas such as Glen Coe and the Cairngorms are included. The walking sections include descriptions and diagrams of the more interesting routes, along with tips on local history, transportation, and accomodation. The guide is sprinkled with a few well-chosen photographs that provide a sense of scale for the terrain in Scotland.

This guide provides more than sufficient information for a traveler to plan a walking vacation in Scotland. Walkers are advised to follow the advice of the guide and pick up more detailed maps once in Scotland. Ordnance Survey and other brands are readily available in Information Centers and Sporting Goods stores in Scotland. Weather conditions are highly variable in Scotland and the lack of a detailed map may leave the walker literally stranded in the fog in some areas.

The downside of the compact size of this guide is that some of the maps and diagrams are so small as to be a challenge to read in anything but good light.

This guide is highly recommended to those contemplating a walking vacation in Scotland.

4 out of 5 stars Compact encyclopaedia for independent walkers.......2002-04-02

For independent walkers planning a trip to Scotland, this book is a portable encyclopaedia. It covers a huge range, from easy walks to exposed ridge-walks and mountain ascents, from a short half-day hike to the Southern Upland Way (two weeks).

As you would expect from Lonely Planet, the authors are strong on environmental issues and thorough on practical information. In 408 pages of densely-packed text they cover the whole of Scotland; the secret of easy access is to use their handy 4-page table of walks organised by region. There is a useful index and glossary, and each walk is supported by a small-scale contour map.

It seems churlish to criticise such a worthy volume for offering too much, but do walkers really need so much detailed data? Price and contact information obsolesce very quickly, as LP clearly knows, and such crowded pages are hard to read in poor light or on a train. You need two strong hands to hold the book open, and even so the gutter is so narrow that you lose the ends of lines of text. As a one-stop resource for walking in Scotland, however, this book is superb value.

    4 out of 5 stars helpful guidebook.......2007-07-13

This book provided a good introduction to the city of Edinburgh, though the part I used the most and found most helpful was the map section in the back. The maps are very detailed and were extrememly useful to me as I navigated the streets of the city.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and major overhaul.......2002-02-08

Not only is this book witty, it covers all the city sights and is very useful. This book is written by a different author from the first edition and the change is phenomenal. This book is definitely recommended - the colourful festivals section is totally cool.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, this books lacks the quality of other LP's........1999-10-13

This guide to Edinburgh unfortunately lacks the quality we're used from Lonely Planet. I couldn't taste any commitment of the author to the subject, it almost looks like that the author wrote the guide during an afternoon visit. Surprisingly, many very interesting features of Edinburgh are not included, like the Botanical Gardens. Many other features are decribed too briefly. When looking for a guide of the town, step into a local bookstore en look for the locally issued handbook of Edinburgh, published bij Mercat Press. It's good souvenir too.

There are great photos and the contents are divided up nicely: overview of scotland, diving in scotland, diving along the east coast, scapa flow, shetland islands, outer hebrides, NW coast, etc...and a chapter on scotish marine life. The appendices have valuable info on Dive Centers and Services as well as, Emergency Information. There is specific info on Depth and Visability, required diving experts, bottom terrain, currents, marine life, safety tips, local dive shops and charters, accommodations and transportation. The dive sites and difficulty ratings of the site are shown on convenient color maps. It's a nice guide for anyone considering diving in Scotland or for the diving enthusiast. The photos alone make this a nice addition to any collection of diving material.

Paul Fleischman offers a glimpse at the Trojan War through modern day newspaper headlines. By equating such events as Agamemnon offering sacrifice to the Greeks before sailing to Troy with George Bush's declaration of a national day of prayer after sending troops to the Persian Gulf, or the massacre of the Trojans by the Greeks to the My Lai incident in Vietnam, Fleischman helps young scholars understand the myth through present-day events and attitudes. Each page of text is enhanced by a collage of newspaper clippings relating to a particular piece of the myth.

1 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for grade schoolers.......2005-01-27

My 11-year-old son brought this book home from the grade school library and, upon first glance, I thought it would be an interesting book. However, as I flipped through the book and saw the newspaper clippings the other reviewers mentioned, I was somewhat startled. Some of them read: "Japan Admits WWII Use of Sex Slaves," "War Protester Burns Herself To Death Here," and "Newborn Found in Dumpster." There were several other, similar articles. This may be fine for young adults of junior high age or higher, but not for grade school kids.

4 out of 5 stars Are modern humans and institutions like Ancient Greece?.......2003-08-14

I have read, both in my childhood and adulthood, many different versions of the Trojan War. The version in this book is well written for both adult and younger audiences.

What is most interesting in this book, however, is its attempt in every page to relate something about behaviors and practices in Ancient Greece to those we find in modern times. The author very ably does this by placing selected newspaper articles - mostly from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s - across each page of the the text as the story of the Trojan War unfolds.

Thus, the book presents subtle comparisons between King Priam's consultation of the Priest of Apollo and a newspaper report of how former President Reagan and his wife used astrology; the competition among Greek godesses to find the fairest among them with a study in the 1990s by some Pennsylvania scientists on how infants respond differently to images of pretty and plain looking women; the spreading of disinformation during the Trojan War to the modern use of psychological warfare; and other comparisons between Ancient Greece and the modern world.

This book thus provides both adult and young readers a foundation to dialogue on how human civlization and institutions have both evolved - and also remained constant in some respects - throughout the ages. This is a very interesting and commendable effort by the author.

The book Dateline: Troy is all about the war against the Trojans and the Greeks. They are fighting over a woman named Helen. The reason that they are fighting over her is because a guy named Paris was asked by 3 goddess` which one of them was the fairest. He eventually picked Aphrodite the goddess of love. Since he picked her she granted him the love of any one he desired. He chose Helen, a married Greek, to be his love. She went to him under the spell. The Greeks didn`t like this, so the war began.
I think this book is confusing because almost every page is about a different person. I also think this book is very exciting because they attack each other all the time. My favorite part is when the Greeks build the wooden horse and pile inside it. They give it to the Trojans saying that they give up. The Trojans take it inside their walls. When the Trojans fell asleep, the Greeks inside attack them while they`re unaware.
If you like books about war, love, and myths, this is a good book for you.

There was a king and a queen of Troy and they had a kid that was put to death when it was born,it did not die. He grow up and become the leader of Troy, than he went and fought the Greeks. It was call the Trojan war and Troy lost. They wanted even so they made a big horse filled with Troys men. They sent it to the Greeks castle as a present and they the Greeks took it in the castle. The man in the horse came out at night and killed all.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes Greek myths. If you like hard books this is the book for you with all of its hard names. If you like war books you may like this book.If you like all of the above this book is for you you would love it. It is also a good because it has things that are going on in the story on one side of the page and on the other there are things happening from the First World War to the Gulf War.
Even know my opinion of this piece of literature is I did not like it you I do not like these kind of books so if you do my opinion is you should get this book. Just because my opinion of the book is one thing does not mean you would not like it.

Dateline Troy takes place in the ancient days of the Trojan war. The main characters are, Hecuba, the queen of Troy and the mother of Paris. King Priam, The father of Paris and king of Troy. Paris, the lost prince of Troy,Helen, King Menelaus' wife and queen of Sparta, and Odysseus the brave warrior and king of Ithaca.
One of the important events in this story was the Trojan War and the story of the giant wooden horse. That's one of the themes of this story. Never let you guards down,But I think the author had something more important to get through to the readers. This book shows how modern events can parallel with the events that happened in the ancient times by showing pictures of newspapers with the events from the past years. I think that this book was interesting yet confusing. It kept going from one character to the next. I don't think I'll enjoy reading mythical books anymore. I can't understand them. They are very unreal. I wouldn't recommend this book to a young child, or someone who enjoys comical books, or books that they can relate to.
