Book Description
Hare solves his family’s problems by tricking rich and lazy Bear in this funny, energetic version of an old slave story. With roots in American slave tales, Tops & Bottoms celebrates the trickster tradition of using one’s wits to overcome hardship. “As usual, Stevens’ animal characters, bold and colorful, are delightful. . . . It’s all wonderful fun, and the book opens, fittingly, from top to bottom instead of from side to side, making it perfect for story-time sharing.”--Booklist

Clever... Witty... Humorous... Must Have for Teachers.......2007-05-06
Stevens, J. (1995). Tops and bottoms. New York: Harcourt Brace & Company.
Synopsis: When Hare loses everything he owns to a risky bet with a persistent tortoise, his family's lives are in danger of starvation. While Hare's family is in danger of starving, his neighbor, Bear, lies around lazily as his richly fertile farm fields lay untouched. Being a sly trickster, Hare devises a plan outsmart his slothful neighbor. Hare offers to plant, water, weed, and harvest his Bear's fields and split the profits 50/50. What Bear doesn't know is that Hare has a trick up his sleeve. Hare plants roots crops and gives Bear the tops. Then he plants leaf and stem vegetables and gives Bear the bottoms. Finally, Bear demands a season of both tops and bottoms. Hare plants the trickiest vegetable of all which really surprises Bear and the readers. In the end, Hare is able to buy back his own land and open a vegetable stand.
Evaluation: Can Hare outsmart the son of a brainy business bear? Readers will recognize this jovial trickster who triumphs by virtue of his quick wit. Stevens notes that his tale is adapted from European folktales and slave stories of the American South. This tale also has similarities with African Anansi stories. Although the author does not indicate any actual sources from which she adapted this tale, it is wildly humorous and worthy of reading for many years to come. Stevens' humorous extension of the Tortoise and Hare tale leaves young children wondering. However, older children and adults can clearly see the humor in the connection. In addition, most children do not see the humor in the fact that Hare and Mrs. Hare have hordes of small bunnies at home. Stevens' bold watercolor, pencil and gesso illustrations cover every inch of each vertically oriented double page spreads draw readers into this sharp tale. The vertical format allowed Stevens to create a tall canvas on which to illustrate succulent vegetables growing in the fields. Each page is full of exuberant details and simple boxed text. Educators will continue pulling this text out for students during spring planting and fall harvesting as a read aloud year after year. Children ages 5-10 will love hearing this tale for many years.
cute story.......2007-02-07
great book for young boys, the story tells of a great lesson in life
a guarenteed smile!.......2007-01-11
the illustartions in this captivating book would make it a must have, but the story is equally as good. kids will love the wiley rabbits and the grouchy bear. it's the kind of book that you can read over and over because the pages are so full of characters that you will see something new each time.
Great Teaching Tool!.......2005-10-01
I bought this book to use in our Educational Tours for school children on our farm. It's a great way to teach about the different parts of plants we eat and the pictures are very cute.
Whellin' A Deal.......2004-10-27
Bear is a very wealthy animal that is undeserving of his good fortune and Hare is a struggling husband/father trying to feed his family. When Hare and his wife come up with a clever plan for food, Hare decides to try it. Might I mention that Bear owns land that is very good for a vegetable garden.
"We can be business partners!" Hare says. "All we need is this field right here in front of your house. I'll do the work of planting and harvesting, and we can split the profit down the middle." Hare says soon afterwards, "So what will it be, Bear?" "The top half or the bottom half?" Hare doesn't mention what crops he will grow to bear, because, of course, he will plant veggies that bear fruit(or, well...vegetables) underground. Carrots, radishes, etc.
The next growing season, Bear will naturally choose the bottoms, but-again-he doesn't demand a certain vegetable to plant, so Hare plants vegetables like cabbage that grow above ground.
Finally Bear gets smart-or at least he thinks he is-and demands to have both the tops and bottoms of the crops; Hare agrees? Why would Hare agree to letting Bear have all the crop?
Janet Stevens has created a book thats screams SOUTHERN! Hare could possibly be the smartest rabbit since Bugs Bunny. What I'm wondering was why Hare didn't take advantage of his neighbor sooner? If only there were more books like this one.

Woods dwellers: Buy This Book!!!.......2007-08-26
Everyone who lives where ANY wild animals are, not just bears, would benefit from reading this book, and equally important, the animals would benefit from people reading this book. It tells how to coexist and enjoy nature without creating or having to deal with problem animals. When people and animals clash, the animals always lose in the end, so help yourself and them with the good advice in this book.
A good general guide.......2007-07-12
This book is worth the money and proviodes lots of good tips for avoiding conflicts. It does not contain much information on bear biology, but then again it doesn't present itself as a natural history guide. I would reccommend it to anyone interested in bear-human conflicts.
Fun to read, accurate, practical.......2007-06-13
This is far and away the best book available for a typical person who has a home or cabin in bear country and wants to know how to cope with bears. It doesn't read like a boring textbook--the writing is light and easy. But retired Colorado Division of Wildlife Conservation biologist Tom Beck did the technical editing, so it's accurate. Most books about bears have not been reviewed by a real expert, so they're filled with erroneous information--some of it quite dangerous. You can trust the advice in this book. It's practical without being preachy. If you decide to be a beekeeper in black bear country--yep, bears do like honey--Living With Bears gives you detailed instructions on how to keep bears out with an electric fence. It provides pragmatic advice for any bear situation you're likely to encounter. If you live in bear country and you want to be a good neighbor, this book will help you understand why bears behave the way they do. Outstanding.
Bears, bears, bears!!!.......2007-05-09
This book is awesome!! The perfect guide to co-existing with our big furry creature. I live in bear country and the bears are definitely out and about. Linda Masterson's book has helped me tremendously with methods of establishing boundaries and educating me on bear behavior. The book is easy to read and I would highly recommend you have it on hand!
Good advice for those who visit or live in bear habitat.......2007-01-05
This book should be required reading for anyone who vacations or moves into bear country. Through the words of expert biologists in the field as well as the experiences of communities that have developed plans to keep bears and people safe, Linda Masterson offers valuable advice. When it comes to coexistence with bears, education is the key, and this book offers very practical education. As an educator for Appalachian Bear Rescue and a presenter of bear programs, I find this book to be an invaluable resource.
Book Description
Anne LaBastille wrote her best-selling book Woodswoman about the peace and solitude she found in the log cabin she built at Black Bear Lake. Eventually, however, the outside world intruded. Woodswoman II is the equally engrossing story of the author's decision to build a tiny cabin retreat fashioned after Thoreau's Walden, of her life with two German shepherds as companions, and of her renewed bond with nature. Originally published under the title Beyond Black Bear Lake. Over 200,000 copies of the Woodswoman series have been sold.

The Woods in Anne's Eyes.......2001-07-09
With the Adirondack setting, Woodswoman II, by Anne Labastille, captures a way of life most people will never know about. The way Anne talks about her life as a woodswoman pulls the reader into her world and life. There are also many good details. While building her second house, Anne faces many difficulties including temporary blindness when she gets cement dust in her eyes, and dropping a large spruce on her leg, injuring herself so she cannot walk for two months. As she chooses her dog, the decision becomes the reader's and the excitement is on them. Around Anne her beautiful world is disappearing to acid rain and people. As the reader progresses through this story he or she will find the true meaning of the woods. The setting and unusual way of writing brings this book together to make a fabulous story of Anne's life. Her unique way of writing shows who she is. She talks about smaller details in great detail, talking about the general one a small mystery. When Anne was building her house, she talks about when her boat flipped when carrying supplies to her cabin. She also talks about her feelings a lot in her autobiography. She explains how she likes her doctor more then why she was temporarily blind when she gets some cement dust in her eyes. Another reason I give this book five stars is the way she decries her surroundings and her land. When Anne is on a walk she Comes upon a cliff and transfer you there in to the fog and wet green moss. She plants a photograph in the reader's mind so that the reader can find every thing in Anne's cabin. As you see there are reasons to like this book. There is one and only one reason why I would not recommend this book is that it skips from one topic to another for example, she talks about building her house, she suddenly starts the next chapter talking about acid rain and polluting. This also happened when she got hurt and talked that in the middle of a chapter about her house. This reason is not bad enough to make this book a book I would not recommend. This book is a wonderful Adironacks story about a young woman and her dogs.
The Honeymoon Is Over; The Love Deepens.......2001-06-14
This second installment of the 'Woodswoman' trilogy is a step up in maturity for Dr. LaBastille. "Woodswoman" (one), dealt largely with the purchase of land and the building of a dream cabin on a remote lake. This books becomes more real, as Dr. LaBastille begins to have to worry about trespassing intruders, acid rain and the real threat that the government can pose in this unique environment. Determined not to let these new problems destroy her outlook or her life, Dr. LaBastille begins to build a second cabin - further into the wilderness. Encompassing both the new thrill of building a more isloated respite along with some freinds, brings another insight into Anne LaBastille's life ten years later. Numerous elderly Adirondack guides become great friends, sharing their own stories of the wilderness. A new romance evolves and the author has to deal with the reality of having to deal with both worlds. This book speaks not only of the wilderness, but the grand people that make and keep it unique. Of course, Dr. LaBastille's dogs are always given star treatment and her love of these animals is heartfelt. More refined and a little less naive, this second 'woodswoman' book will break and warm your heart at the same time.
Recommended for city folk yearning for wilderness living........2000-09-07
Woodswoman II is the continuing biography of author Anne LaBastille, who found peace and solitude in the log cabin she built for herself at Black Bear Lake, in the Adirondack Park of upstate New York. This is the engaging, compelling, sometimes inspiring story of how Anne decided to retreat a half-mile father into the wilderness behind her main cabin and build a second, tiny cabin (fashioned after the one in Thoreau's "Walden") in which she could write and contemplate. Woodswoman II focuses on her renewed bond with nature, her companionship with two German shepherd dogs; and her sustained and sustaining relationship with a man fully as independent as herself. Highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever contemplating leaving the stress of urban life behind for the contemplative isolation of the wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
Still love Anne's stories.......2006-09-12
I greatly enjoyed Anne's stories about the ways and means people go to reach her. This book isn't as fun as Woodswoman, but any Anne LaBastille devotee will still love it, as I have. Some of it gets a little taxing as she is using the book to teach about acid rain and other environmental problems, but they are very real to her world.
Keep writing, Anne!
A Bit of a Turn-Off.......2006-01-04
I, too, was enthralled by Anne Labastille's "Woodswoman" and eagerly bought the hardcopy of this book when it first came out. I have to say I found it a bit of a turn-off. Her reasons for moving father back in the woods gave me the same feeling I get whenever I see gated communities: as if the people living in them consider themselves too special and elite to associate with us common folk. I haven't bought any more of the author's books since.
Further Back Into The Woods..........2003-06-24

Beyond Black Bear Lake.......2000-05-22
I thought this book explained how Anne was feeling in a time of remorse. Being from the country area I too understand how Anne could want to retreat. It's horrifing to see the world of wilderness torn up by business. People walking around on your land, bugging you ever chance they get. Thinking for themselves, and not you and your privacy. It's a shame. I think Annes book explained how alot of us may feel inside. The joy of nature can sure bring out the best in us.
Disappointing after the first book.......2000-05-16
I was disappointed in this second book and enjoyed the first one (Woodswoman) much more. I had a hard time connecting emotionally with this book and did not feel the same sense of adventure as with the 1st book. I would definitely recommend Woodswoman, but you can skip this book.

Book Description
What causes bear attacks? When should you play dead and when should you fight an attacking bear? What do we know about black and grizzly bears and how can this knowledge be used to avoid bear attacks? And, more generally, what is the bear’s future?
Bear Attacks is a thorough and unflinching landmark study of the attacks made on men and women by the great grizzly and the occasionally deadly black bear. This is a book for everyone who hikes, camps, or visits bear country – and for anyone who wants to know more about these sometimes fearsome but always fascinating wild creatures.
From the Hardcover edition.

Bear Atacks. Their causes and avoidance.......2007-09-15
I have made three wilderness kayaking trips with buddies and my son and daughter to South East Alaska since 1999 . I have kayaked, camped and hiked in bear habited Glacier Bay and Mysty Fiords National Monument.
Prior to my first trip in 1999 I had no knowledge or experience (I am Irish) about how to behave safely in bear country apart from reading the park services two page leaflet about the essentials for traveling in bear country and watching a twenty minute video on bear safety.
We managed to escape unscathed from five bear (black and grizzly) encounters over the two weeks we were there through ignorance, fear and a good bit of luck.
We made two further trips to SE Alaska (2002, 2006) and encountered bears on each trip but despite taking all advised precautions I could not get it out of my mind that we were surviving bear attacks mostly by luck. None of us had any idea what to do if a bear did attack (apart from having excellent first aid qualifications and a VHF radio.
Now that I have read "Bear Attacks. Their causes and Avoidance" , Stephen Herrero, I know how lucky we really have been. This book does not make for easy reading. It is graphic in its description of attacks and their aftermath but it is essential reading for anybody thinking of heading into bear country.
Having read it I know that I will be better prepared for my 2009 wilderness trip to SE Alaska.

Disappointed in revised edition........2007-06-10
Just another of an old book you add a few lines to and call it revised edition. I thought he would go into recent attacks since the first edition. Many of the same stories. Many of the same pictures, illustrations and just the old book with a new cover. Might say a few more lines about pepper spray and a few things but that's it. Don't waste your money on it. Buy the older edition in hardback and save money. You are basically reading the same thing. The book is a great book but not the revised edition. Same as old. Very disappointed.
Required Reading For Backcountry Camping in Grizzly Country.......2007-05-20
This is an outstanding book to prepare yourself for being in the backcountry with Grizzlies. It offers a great deal of information on both black and grizzly bears. It thoroughly covers everything to do with bears including their biology and life cycle, descriptions of previous attacks, and, of course, what to do when you encounter a bear. This book explains in detail why it is important to act differently towards bears in different situations.
Some people have mentioned that the book goes into too great a detail regarding bear attacks. I disagree. I believe that this information is important if you are ever unlucky enough to be attacked by a bear. However, don't read this book while you are actually camping in grizzly territory. A group just before us sustained a bluff charge so we knew a grizzly was nearby. That incident combined with the reading of the book while camping combined for some really restless sleep.
knowledge is the best defense.......2007-02-24
This one ought to be required reading for those of us who enjoy venturing into bear country for work or play. If the information in this book were more widely known, the result would be greater safety for people and bears. This book is comprehensive and authoritative. It describes the important differences in behavior between black bears and grizzly bears better than any other book I've seen on the subject.
Bear attacks.......2006-02-19
This is a must read for anyone who intends to be on the ground in grizzly country or in black bear country. It contains many carefully researched bear attack accounts, interviews, reconstructions , etc. No made up stuff. No anthropomorphism. No touchy feely wishful utopian stuff. This guy is a realist and cautious. He wants to save lives. If only the suicidal psychopath from Malibu (or better yet his girl friend) had read and understood this book (the key is understood!) we might not have that fascinating movie to talk about. Like Bob Golden, the chief biologist for David Brower for 15 years once told me.."Grizzlies are utterly incompatible with human beings."

Intellectually and visually stimulating.......2002-05-17
This book provides a great wealth of knowledge on the black bear and does so in a very relaxed style. The joy experienced in reading this book was only surpassed by the joy in the stunning photography which is present through out. A wonderful work but next to impossible to find.
Black Bear Country.......1999-12-17
This study of the black bears of Minnesota is well researched and well written. The photography is all color and mostly full page spreads. The photos alone are well worth the cost of the book. Contains photos of Kermode, blue, and cinnamon "phase" black bears. A must for all bear lovers!
Pictures make you feel like you're staring down the critter!.......1999-11-17
Great pictures, and good insight into the unique hibernation nuances of the black bear. A very captivating book.
