Book Description

Since its original publication in 1993, The Safari Companion has been the best field guide to observing and understanding the behavior of African mammals. An indispensable tool for naturalists traveling to Africa, this new edition has been revised to acknowledge the enthusiasm to those watching these magnificent animals at zoos and wildlife parks, and on film. The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. In addition, useful maps show the major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks relevant to the guide. The book includes an extensive glossary, as well as tips on wildlife photography, a list of organizations working to protect African wildlife, and advice on where and when to see the animals.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written, by and Expert.......2007-07-19

I just returned from Tanzania, and used this book while on Safari in Serengetti, Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire.

The main strength of the book is the high level overview given to game viewing in the beginning and at the beginning of each animal section. Without some background in behavioral biology it is tough to watch the animals and find it interesting for too long. After reading the opening to this book I was able to take much more from watching big herds of grazers than the tourists I was with.

Richard Estes is clearly an expert in the field, but he writes in a fashion that is easy to understand for a layman. He also gives some personalization to his accounts, giving personal tips for a good game drive.

The only issue with the book is that it is sometimes difficult to match the behavior of the animals in the field to the book in the limited time that is available on safari, so I would suggest that anyone interested read the sections about the animals they expect to see before the safari, and have those pages marked for reference during the game drive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Safari Companion.......2007-03-08

This book was an engrossing and wonderful read as we undertook the Safari.
It provided insight into the behavior and special characteristics of each animal that we saw, and made the sightings much more interesting than just the identification of each species.
Recommended highly!

2 out of 5 stars In my experience, this isn't very useful.......2007-02-26

I've been to Tanzania's national parks twice, and watched a lot of game in both the popular and the less-crowded parks. Estes came with me the first time, based on my interest in the animals and reviewers' comments found here; and this last time I took along the (copied) pages for a dozen or so animals (zebras, elephants, wildebeest, giraffes, etc).

His work is certainly interesting and I fully expected it would be a useful Safari Companion. But it hasn't lived up to expectations.

I know I've been fortunate to have guides who were very knowledgable: getting us into interesting situations, pointing out behavior and being able to answer lots of questions. In the evening, though, I've often checked to see what Estes might have to say about what we'd seen; and, typically, I didn't learn anything new. That, by itself, doesn't justify leaving Estes behind. But with few exceptions, fairly careful reading of Estes beforehand didn't prepared me to "see" behavior that might otherwise have been missed over the course of 5 weeks of game watching. I'm certain it's not that the behavior Estes describes doesn't occur; it's just that we tourists rarely have the opportunity to observe animals for long enough periods for it to happen!

After my second trip, I got a copy of "The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals" and I might take it along next time as a close substitute for Estes. For very easy identification of the common animals and birds of East Africa, however, I'll continue to rely on Withers and Hosking, "Wildlife of East Africa" in preference to the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to ..." (which I also own).

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average safari .......2007-01-09

This is a great book for people that want to know about all the variations of antelope, birds etc. If you're looking to go on your first safari and will be amazed by the sight of your first lion, this book is overkill for you.

If you're well educated on animal species, this is a good book for you.

4 out of 5 stars The Safari Companion.......2006-08-21

Excellent safari companion showing various animals and describing them, their habitat, etc. Recommended for anyone going on safari.

Enhanced with both color photographs and drawings, as well as b/w sketches and illustrations, Peter Taylor's Bats Of Southern Africa showcases 78 species of bats native to southern Africa. The reader is provided with clear descriptions and accurate diagnostic features, as well as a wealth of information on the bat's habitat, social and roosting habits, diet, reproduction, echolocation call, distribution, and conservation status. A superb introduction and reference, Bats Of Southern Africa is a welcome and highly recommended addition to wildlife reference collections in general, and the Bat in particular.

This is truly an excellent book,a joy to look at,packed with lots of information. However it is not really a book suitable to be taken in the field, the authors smaller book mammals of southern, central and eastern africa would be a better book to take into the field. The authors really know the animals and their passion for the subject comes out in their writing.

4 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa.......2001-05-31

This book is nicely organized. The animals are separated into their prospective families. This is especially helpful for the scientific minded reader. While on safari if I see an animal that is most likely a carnivore, I will know exactly where to look it up.

The pictures are very clear and the description focuses on the distinguishing characters of each species. The descriptions are very logical and easy to follow... i.e. the blaze on the nose of this antelope is continuous therefore, it is species A, where the blaze on the nose of the next antelope (which looks just like species A) is not continuous, therefore it is species B.

4 out of 5 stars Good source for species identification.......1999-02-17

The is book has become a diary for collecting plainsgame in Southern Africa. I have kept notes and records in this book to track animals I have collected and those remaining on my wish list.

Additionally I recommend this book for those who are on their first few trips to So. Africa for a hunting expedition or site-seeing holidays.

Southern Africa's rich wildlife heritage includes 291 species of land living mammals. Of these, approximately 200 species are likely to be seen.

This handy field guide provides information on these 200 land mammals of the region and will assist the reader to identify the various species. Every entry has a small map indicating where they occur, an illustration of the animal, its paw print and a description of its size, habitat and habits.

The text and plates appear in the standard sequence of animal classification systems, and information is provided on orders and families, whilst the common names are also provided. There is also a section on the climate and vegetation of the Southern African sub-region.

Authentic in detail and color, the plates are beautifully executed and the animals are proportionally grouped together where possible. In its reference section a glossary, bibliography, index of scientific names, index of English names and index of Afrikaans names can assist the reader.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Decent info, but presented awkwardly........2005-12-31

This is an adequate guide, but was disappointing in a few areas. Firstly, it is not geared to someone making a comprehensive West Africa trip but rather reads like a collection of individual country guides. It's OK if you are going to just fly in a hang out in a single country, but planning cross border itineraries is a chore. There could be better integration for the area.

Secondly, using the maps and references to them is a bit taxing. Place names that would likely be obsure to the reader are presented in the text without specifying country or area; the only way to figure out where or how is to scan maps randomly for some idea of specifically where they are talking about. Place names are often referred to with different spellings, or more colloquially, in the text than on the maps, making finding them once again a tiring guessing game. There is a lack of consistency. Beyond that, the maps are small and lacking in detail. In other words, you can sort it all out, but this guide makes you work harder than you should have to. You get the feeling that it needed to be proofed once more.

I agree with the accusations of ethnocentrism mentioned previously, but I've grown used to it in LP guides, and in a way appreciate seeing the author's predjudices up front.

Use this guide and you'll have a fine trip, I think, but you'll spend too many hours wrestling logistic details from the text when you could be perusing the fun stuff.

I use LP, Rough Guide, and Moon guides alternately when I travel. Actually, I usually buy all three, study them all before departure, and take the one I think is most useful. I have not found any one brand to be consistently better or worse, it varies by area and author. In this case I think the Rough Guide is much better. It very neatly addresses all my reservations above, and with a better layout.

5 out of 5 stars From a returned Peace Corps Volunteer.......2003-11-10

This book is practically the bible for W. Africa travel. I lived and worked in W. Africa for 3 years (2 years as a Peace Corps volunteer) and I never went anywhere without consulting LP. The information is as accurate as anything out there. It offers you suggested itineraries and "off the beaten path" suggestions as well as the traditionally touristy destinations. Many parts are less objective than other parts and the writers tend to harp on corruption. But W. Africa is a pretty corrupt place in general. If you don't like the editorial sections, skip 'em, the info you need is still there.

1 out of 5 stars SMEARED BY DEROGATORY PHRASES.......2003-05-11

Indeed, this book ("Lonely Planet West Africa") did a good job in outlining many of the popular tourist attractions that are located in this Sub-Saharan region of Africa. I also appreciated its details on several tourists' trails, accomodations, means of transportation, and so on. However, I was very disappointed to note that (just like the "Lonely Planet Africa on a Shoestring") this book is full of discouraging comments. Some of the phrases Lonely Planet used in this book are quite offensive.
For sure, most foreigners who travel to (West) African countries are not expecting to see a paradise, but that does not mean that there is no better way of presenting real and imaginary negative thoughts. This book is smeared by terms and phrases, which I consider derogatory to both (West) Africa and (West) Africans. As a result of this, I will never recommend it to anyone until there is a change of heart by Lonely Planet in subsequent editions.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a shoestring traveller, one-sided at times.......2002-03-19

I once said I would never buy a Lonely Planet guide again, so disappointed I was with their Iceland and Greenland book which was poorly researched, inaccurate and full of rabid anti-American rhetoric.

For my trip to Ghana, it was, however, a choice of only three books available: a semiprofessional Bradt's Ghana (not a guidebook really, more an amateurish newsletter), supremely boring Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. I bought them all in the name of research.

I would say Lonely Planet is best of them all, although certain chapters preaching about evil ways of Western capitalism still reek of Lonely Planet's self-appointed role of bettering the world. Quite annoying, really, and in many cases hypocritical, coming from a lean-and-mean profit-making publishing house.

Most facts about travel, eating, accommodation, etc are accurate and well-researched, although as usual information to someone with a bit bigger budget is very fragmented.

They could give more information about useful websites for both ticket booking and accommodation.

Overall, if you are only buying one book for West Africa, this is the one. If you can get two - buy the Rough Guide as well: it may be boring and cultural information reads as if it was written by your local tax office, but you will get many additional addresses and phone numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Best written Lonely Planet I've read.......2002-01-20

I really enjoyed this book. I feel it is the best written LP I've ever read (and I've read and traveled with many LP titles). I used the Sénégal section and found the hotel listings current and the maps very accurate. I really liked the special boxes with additional information on dangers, scams, and personal safety. I personally witnessed many things that I had read about in this book, making me ready for would be scam artists. One guy approached me and said "Remember me from the hotel lobby?" I had to keep myself from laughing. I replied back "I think so, which hotel?" and he didn't know what to say. With LP West Africa you will be well prepared to travel in one of the hardest places to travel in the world.

NOTE: The book is 4 years old and the region is even more unsafe now then it was 4 years ago. Be careful when traveling there.

              5 out of 5 stars Become a Published Writer.......2006-10-11

If there was an exclusive country club for published writers, Shirley Jump would open the door and invite you in.

It is evident from the book that she has a real knack for teaching what she knows. And since she has sold over 3000 articles, two non-fiction books, and is an award-winning novelist, I think she's qualified to teach!

The highest praise anyone can give a how-to book is: "It worked for me." After I read this book, I "joined the country club" and got my first article published. That one opened the door for many others!

I have read and enjoyed other books about writing, but this is the book I actually use. The information presented in How to Publish Your Articles is very accessible and highly readable. It's great for beginners as well as experienced writers, because it cuts out the fluff and just tells you how to do it.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Staple for Freelancers.......2005-12-23

How To Publish Your Articles is a great resource for beginning freelancers who want to publish articles. The author, Shirley Jump, is an accomplished author of nine books, has contributed to various anthologies, and has countless numbers of articles under her belt.

In Part One, Shirley begins with the basics of writing. She first helps you define your goals for writing. Then she explains the article market and how it works.

In Part Two, you learn about article publishing. You have to know where your article fits in, which helps you to find the right publication for your piece. Shirley explains in detail every type of article there is for you to write, as well as every type of publication there is out there for you to submit to.

The thing I like about this book is that Shirley doesn't just tell you what you need. She explains in detail how to write your cover letter, for example. The section on writing your cover letter, literally takes you step-by-step through the salutation; introductory paragraph; second, third, and fourth paragraph; and the closing. Not only that, but she also tells you how you should format your letter and what type of paper should be used to create a business-like appearance. Taking it one step further, sample cover letters are also included, so you can actually see how it's done.

Part Three delves into building your career as a freelance writer. Shirley discusses how to find ideas for your articles, as well as how to recycle old ideas. Next, she takes you through composing the query letter. As in the cover letter, she walks you step-by-step, from beginning to end. Example query letters are included for both published and unpublished writers. She also includes samples that did and did not make the sale.

Shirley also talks about researching and writing your article, once the sale is made, as well as important facts about contracts and rights. The book is rounded out in the end with inspirational advice and thoughts from Shirley about building your career as a freelance writer.

I believe How To Publish Your Articles should be a staple for every writer who is starting a career as a freelancer, or who is thinking about starting. It is full of important information that is pertinent to every freelance writer.

When you purchase your copy, I suggest you read through it once entirely. Then, once you consume the information for the first time, go back and start from the beginning and use a highlighter. Don't be afraid to take notes in the side margin, too--there's lots of space there, so utilize it!

5 out of 5 stars Send the Kids Back to School and Start Writing Articles!.......2003-08-08

How To Publish Your Articles is the most comprehensive book on freelance writing that I have ever read. As a new writer it has been instrumental in helping me get published. With user friendly instructions Ms. Jump takes the anxiety out of formatting queries and proposals. Whether you want to crack the magazine market, write short stories or personal essays, all the infomation you need is here. Take the advice in this book and put it to work, you won't be sorry!

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson,award-winning author of This is the Place and Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered

I asked for a copy of How to Publish Your Articles by Shirley Kawa-Jump because I'm writing a series of how-to books for retailers and wanted to recommend a tell-it-all book on a subject I would just be touching on. Having published many articles in the national and local media, I was afraid I wouldn't find a good one, that I would be too tough a critic.

Now I'll have to eat my fears. If that is similar to eating crow, so be it. Having published more than 2500 articles herself, Kawa-Jump's book is thorough and knowledgeable. It's also both basic enough for beginners and advanced enough to be a good review for accomplished writers. Seasoned article writers might even find a new tidbit or two that will help them with marketing, with their contracts or with building their careers.

What I liked best about HTPYA is that it gives a mini insider's view of how an article reaches a publication's desk and it does it for categories from large consumer magazines to e-outlets.

I was surprised that the chapter I found the most rewarding was all about goals. Obviously, my retailers who choose to pursue writing articles in their area of expertise are going to have to narrow their goals very drastically. If it will work for someone with such a strict objective, it's sure to do even more for writers with big dreams.

              Book Description

Japanese kanji characters combine meaning with beauty and thus offer a unique medium for artistic expression. But if you don't know the language, how do you find characters that say what you want and are not just a "kanji cliche"? You can start here. This attractive book has over one hundred thirty kanji presented in a simple format for easy use. For example:

Post the kanji for kenshin on a mirror to remind you of your "devotion" to your studies.
Embroider bussho on a meditation cushion to help you reflect on "Buddha nature."
Tattoo the name Zatoichi on your upper arm as homage to your favorite blind swordsman hero.
Show your "love" with a card decorated by ai.

Pick from Warrior, Heart, Nature, and Spirit categories to find the characters that express your sentiments best. Each entry includes historical or etymological background, often with unusual "kanji facts." Then trace, photocopy, or even stencil the clear letterforms-displayed in several different kanji "fonts"-to get just the effect you want. Included is an introduction to kanji, writing tips, and a special supplement on Zodiac kanji (great for birthdays!).

"People are always fascinated by different cultures, and we continue to be awed by the wonderful ways in which East and West have mingled in culture, lifestyle, design, art, and aesthetics. We hope this book will enrich your own experience of kanji in art and design and help you bring your creative gifts to bear in fresh, new ways."-from the Authors' Introduction

Shogo Oketani and Leza Lowitz are writers and translators who live in the San Francisco Bay area.

I have been an admirer for Oriental Culture, and willing to understand Chinesse and Japanese writing. This book is an excellent source which explains a lot of Kanji symbols, and has several notes about interesting facts about it. I recommend it to all people looking to introduce themselves into this enigmatic and wonderful language.

Easy to read, follow, and use right away. Shows formal, modern, flowing, and stylish character sets. Describes the root, meaning, and nature of common Japanese words and phrases. The calligraphy is excellent. I only wish it was longer and more encompassing. Among other things I use this book as a supplement to Write Your Name in Kanji text by Nobuo Sato to write the characters more elegantly.

We had recently seen "The Last Samuri" so I was in the frame of mind to learn more about Japanese history and culture. I found this book on the Breakfast table one recent morning. The introduction and explanation of Kanji was clear and concise. This book provided a great beginning to the subject of how a culture influenced a language and how a language influenced a culture. I couldn't put it down for an hour or so. I'll refer to it often.

How lucky I was this holiday season to have received Designing with Kanji: Japanese Character Motifs for Surface, Skin and Spirit by Shogo Oketani and Leza Lowitz. From the beautiful cover to the exquisitely illustrated text Stonebridge Press has done it again! Oketani and Lowitz have taken an art form that is little understood in the United States and have made it accessible. I have always been drawn to "Asian things" in my home from artifacts to flower arranging, and the Kanji calligraphy and historical background helped me clarify my fascination with the genre. I had no idea there were other Kanji fonts such as modern and stylish for instance.I particularly appreciated the poetic description of each illustrated Kanji and the little Kanji Facts interspersed throughout the book. I have no tattoos and am not expecting to get any in the near future however, this book is for anyone wishing to understand the Japanese "character".

This book contains tons of beautiful Chinese designs -- usually from ceramics or embroidery. Whenever I need a Chinese motif, I can find it here.

Like most Dover books, there's no real text to explain where the images came from or their significance. But for sheer volume of visual material, this book is a winner.
