Chester Raccoon doesn't want to go to school--he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he'll love school--with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that's been in the family for years--the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son's hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm--smack dab in the middle: "Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart." Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother's kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he--in a genuinely touching moment--gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, published by the Child Welfare League of America, is just the right book for any child taking that fledgling plunge into preschool--or for any youngster who is temporarily separated from home or loved ones. The rough but endearing raccoon illustrations are as satisfying and soothing for anxious children as the simple story. (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
In this contemporary classic Chester Raccoon seeks love and reassurance from his mother as he ventures out into the world to attend his very first day of school.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Story.......2007-10-17
I was looking for a book to help prepare my daughter (and me) for the first day of preschool; The Kissing Hand was recommended by friends and family. I tried to find it at the library, but it was always checked out, so I decided to purchase it from Amazon and I am so happy I did, this is a wonderful addition to any home library. The story is so touching; both of my girls (ages three and two, just love it and so do I.) The book includes sticker, which I have used when dropping off my daughter at school. Highly recommend it to anyone getting ready for school.
great first day of school book.......2007-10-10
Sweet story about a little one that doesn't want to leave mom to go to school. Very loving story. My daughter (4) really liked this book. They actually read it on the first day in her pre-school class. Great gift idea.
Love Love Love it.......2007-09-22
I think everyone should own this book. What a great message: Mom's love will always be there.
sweet story.......2007-09-21
I bought this for my five year old to give to him before going to Kindergarten. He wasn't afraid to go, but he really enjoyed the story and the sweet sentiment. He made me a little Kissing Hand picture with the stickers in the back, and I made him a little Kissing Hand note with one of the stickers that he stuck in his pocket for the first few days of school. He even gives his little brothers kissing hands from time to time - very sweet book.
What a gift this author provides.......2007-09-19
For young Chester Raccoon, the first day of school is scary indeed, and young children will be able to relate to the young raccoon who cries at the thought of being separated from his mother. But his wise mother sends him off with a wonderful secret to see him through and carry the memory and strength of her love with him always. The book's foreword says The Kissing Hand is "for the child within each of us who sometimes needs reassurance." Love is truly the bedrock that sustains and reassures us on our path through life, and this book reinforces the importance of loving relationship for us all. Beautifully told, the tale may give youngsters the confidence they need to cope with whatever comes their way. In an unusual move, the author has teamed up two acclaimed artists (one a descendant of Sir Christopher Wren) with distinctive styles that nonetheless blend beautifully. These are endearing, luminous illustrations - Chester Raccoon has got to be the cutest raccoon in all of children's literature.

Book Description
There was once a little raccoon who wanted to go out in the night -- to know an owl, to see if the moon is a rabbit, and to find out how dark is the dark. But his mother said, "Wait. Wait till the moon is full." So the little raccoon waited and wondered, while the moon got bigger and bigger and bigger. Until at last, on a very special evening, the moon was full.

Simply Love This Book.......2007-09-10
This is just such a sweet, simple story with lovely illustrations. The last page just brings it all together. This is a great book to add to a toddlers collection.
Wonderful book.......2007-01-05
I bought this for my three year old daughter, largely based on the reviews. She took one look at the cover, wanted to read it, and didn't want to read any other books for the rest of the day. The writing is lyrical and sweet. I highly recommend it.
Great classic!.......2006-03-02
Although I did not read this book as a child, it is a wonderful classic and I see that many other parents loved it as children. It is a sweet story and my daughter loves reading it.
"Wait Till the Moon Is Full".......2005-10-20
This book was one of my favorites as a child. I was delighted to find that it was available -- at bought four copies immediately to give to special children.
A wonderful childhood memory to pass on.......2001-01-25
I have been looking for a copy of this book for years. While visiting my brother recently I discovered that he had the copy that we read over and over again when we were children. It's in poor shape, a testimony to the use it received. He wouldn't part with it, so I am so pleased to find it available again. I'm sure my 2-year old grandson will enjoy this sweet and gentle story as much as I did.

YAWN!!!!!!!!!.......2007-09-21
What a boring book! Seriously, get a plot! I wouldn't recommend this book to people who like realistic, exciting books. This just made me go to sleep. If you're a preteen girl like me, I wouldn't advise to read this book.
Rascal by Sterling North.......2006-12-18
"I left the pecans on a stump near the waterline, hoping Rascal would find them. And I paddled swiftly and desperately away from the placewhere we had parted."
Rascal is a chapter of Sterling North's life, the time where he and his raccoon, Rascal, shared many adventures. On May of 1918, Sterling and his friend Oscar went fishing, and they found a little of four baby raccoons. Sterling caught a raccoon and named him Rascal. They became close friends and had lots of fun together. But in the end, Sterling released Rascal into the wild where he can live a ordinary raccoon's life. In my opinion,
Rascal is a great book, fulled of warmth and humor, depicting the life of a boy and his raccoon.
One reason I like it so much is because of the relationship between Sterling and Rascal, and how Sterling treats Rascal not just as a pet but as in a very close friend. For example, when Rascal ate the sweet corn in their neighbor's field, the neighbors got very mad and some threatened to shoot Rascal the next time they see him in their field. They made Sterling promised to put Rascal on a leash and lock him in a cage. But everytime they ask Sterling have he locked Rascal up yet, he always reply with "Maybe tomorrow." but he never does. At last when he had to lock Rascal up, he felt so much pain, and recalled it as "putting a friend in prison".
Another reason why I'm so attached to this book is how cute the author depicted Rascal. When Sterling gave Rascal his first sugar lump, he sniffed it and played with it in his bowl of milk. In a few moments it melted, and Rascal looked for it everywhere. Then he looked at Sterling, his eyes seems to ask; who stole his sugar lump?
I like how Sterling always have interesting things coming up, one after another. It seems that some are good and bad. Such as when the biology teacher asked everyone in the class to bring their pet. Everyone loved Rascal, except for Slammy Stillman, who flung a rubberband in Rascal's face when it was his chance to pet him. Then Rascal yelped in pain and viciously bit in Slammy's hand. Then the teacher had to sendSterling and Rascal home because of it.
Overall, this book is a heartwarming story about a boy and his raccoon. I think this is one of the best literture in history which really attaches the reader.
Review on Rascal.......2006-12-14
Filled with excitement, compassion, and responsibility, Rascal is a great book for any age. Sterling North, the author, does a great job of explaining how such an odd relationship between a boy and a racoon can become a learning adventure. When you're reading a book, do you ever feel like you're actually in the house with the characters? Well, North also does a great job of describing the setting enough for you to feel like you're in the story with the boy and his father. I had no idea that such a companionship could cause so much trouble throughout the boy's neighborhood. Yet, he somehow manages to find a way around getting into trouble with his new friend. Rascal shows how responsibility can sometimes be challenging, but not to give up for what you believe is right.
my favorite childhood book.......2006-04-03
Sterling NOrth has written a wonderful, touching, memorable book based on his childhood, and a raccoon named Rascal. It is beautifully written, and is suitable for adults as well as children. He describes each aspect of his childhood so well that you almost feel you are there.
If you are an adult who has never read this book, I hope you will not miss the opportunity. If you have a child, don't let him or her miss this wonderful classic.
Rascal .......2006-04-01
Rascal
Sterling North
Rascal, by Sterling North, is an autobiography written in 1963. At age twelve, Sterling is a strong and smart boy, who has been helping his father and himself get by in their home ever since his mother died a year ago. Every once and a while, his older sister, Jessica, comes to see how they are doing. Sterling and his friend are out enjoying the summer when they come upon a mother racoon and her newborn babies. When the mother is scared away, Sterling takes one of the little raccoons for his own, naming it Rascal. Rascal is a very odd racoon, who enjoys being inside and around people. As the book goes on, Rascal and Sterling both grow up, learning life lessons along the way. The end is great, and Sterling ends up having one year that he will never forget. This book gives a great sense of feeling from the character's perspective and what it would be like to be in their shoes. The one thing that was not the best was that it was a little bit on the shorter side. It would have been great if it were longer. Aside from that, it was a great book. People who enjoy humor and adventure books would like to read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Tiny but charming.......2000-04-14
This is a pochet size hardcover book. The pictures in it are very delicate, and it's about the life of a mother raccoon. So as you can imagine, there's no surprising plot, but only protecting the baby raccoons, and searching for food,...etc. I think it's a good source for education, but not entertainment.

Wonderful!.......2000-04-02
My kids love this book! We have to read it everyday at nap time. I think it is a wonderful parable about how as long as we have God with us we don't need anything else. It has been good stepping stone for futher converstions with my 4 and 3 year old.
Book Description
"Jim Cain, well known for co-authoring the activity book,
Teamwork & Teamplay, and Tom (Smith) have expositorily teamed up to record the history, philosophy, ceremony and surprisingly numerous activities that can be attempted using just a piece of webbing, resulting in this reference book you were wise enough to purchase." (Taken from "The Book on Raccoon Circles" Introduction by Karl Rohnke).

Not the best value for me money,.......2006-02-28
This book has some good activities but was terribly repetitive. I have read a lot of team building and experimental learning books and thought, I must have read this before. Unfortunately it was the book constantly repeating itself. This book has the same sections repeated several times word for word. It was almost as if it was thrown together in a hurry just to meet a deadline. Needless to say, I didn't think it was worth the money.
Fantastic!.......2003-09-04
The Book on Raccoon Circles holds an amazing wealth of ideas, games and teambuilding activities using one of the simplest pieces of equipment available. I am so grateful to Dr. Jim Cain for gathering all of his (and others') Raccoon Circle material into one incredibly useful book. Raccoon Circles are an essential tool in adventure/teambuilding programs and this book is a great resource for teachers, professionals, camp counselors, and anyone else who desires to build team and community in a group. Not only are there instructions for specific activities/initiatives, but Dr. Cain includes very uselful sections on facilitation and using symbolism in teambuilding.

Newbery Honor Book, 1950
An early naturalist and philosopher escapes civilization by building his house among the giant redwoods.
Customer Reviews:
I love sharing this book with young and adult friends!.......2000-04-16
Jerome Kildee is a shy stonecutter who retires to the redwood forest to be alone. He finds, instead, friendship for the first time in his life. Delightfully simple, soothing, and serene, this little book takes the reader into the heart of an unassuming man who finds joy in the animals and children he learns to know; the reader has the sublime opportunity of gaining the friendships Jerome finds in spite of his self-imposed isolation. His quiet ways allow for the local animals and children to invade his space, and that is when the fun begins. Jerome learns to relate to a variety of personalities and resolve the issues in an unusual community of innocence. The descriptions of his little home will charm you enough to want to retreat there. For anyone who enjoys nature and self discovery, Kildee house is a book to savor. I have read Jerome's story about 30 times. I love sharing it with the people I care about because it has never failed to delight and satisfy its new friends.
Heartwarming Story.......1999-12-29
This is a heartwarming story, very well written, about a man who builds a home on the side of a giant redwood tree. A family of skunks claim the house as their own, and the man is kind to them. Other forest animals visit, as well. The man doesn't have the heart to turn the animals away, nor can he turn away children from two fueding families. My eight year old son loved this book at bedtime. It's a gentle story written decades ago, in a gentler time. Highly recommended.
