Book Description

While observing a family group of elephants in the wild, Caitlin O'Connell, a young field scientist, noticed a peculiar listening behavior. A matriarch she had been watching for months turned her massive head and lifted her foot off the ground. As she scanned the horizon, the other elephants followed suit, all facing the same direction. O'Connell soon made a groundbreaking discovery: the elephants were "listening through limbs," feeling the ripples of the earth's surface for approaching friends and enemies. Through their feet, toenails, trunks, and other, subtler modes of communication, these enormous animals were communicating to one another, demonstrating the vital importance of social relationships in their lives.

Yet this grand revelation about the intelligence of wild animals is also a story of the relationship between humans and elephants as neighbors, vying for the same resources of an increasingly crowded continent. For when O'Connell was first contracted by the Namibian government to develop new methods to deter elephants from raiding villagers' crops, she was unprepared for what she would encounter -- political upheaval, tribal disputes, inhumane poachers, and a fundamentally ineffective approach to wildlife conservation. Despite these setbacks, she came to know and love each of the fascinating, unique elephants under her watchful eye, while at the same time witnessing a change in attitude and policy, providing hope for the elephant's future.

An unforgettable journey of scientific discovery, The Elephant's Secret Sense takes you deep into the wilds of Namibia, from the tops of isolated, desert observation towers to the jaws and claws of ravenous lions to aerial expeditions and dusty highways, where the naturalists do their difficult work in a troubled land threatened by expanding human populations and unstable politics. Resonant with the powerful calls of the mysterious elephant, this is a story about the resilience of nature and the inspiring, astonishing, and often heartbreaking places where humans and wild animals come together.

2 out of 5 stars Not Animals in Translation..........2007-05-20

I was expecting a book similar to Temple Grandin's Animals in Translation. Unfortunately, this book is very much unlike that book. I expected the bulk of this book to focus specifically on elephant communication, but that is not the case. Much time is spent on African conservation in general and the history of certain African areas where she was stationed. When I bought the book, it was not to read about local tribes or their politics, it was to read about elephant communication. Not saying the other topics aren't interesting, but if I wanted to read about those, I would have bought a book specifically on that. Making things worse, her style of writing is very disjointed and skips around.

There are not many books that I don't finish reading, but this was one of them. I was very much looking forward to reading this book based on the reviews. Not sure why there was such a disconnect. Maybe it's expectations. If you are expecting a more in-depth book specifically on elephant communication, with lots of scientific detail, this isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars Who Knew Elephants Hear With Their Toes!.......2007-05-13

Anyone who is interested in African elephants and their rich and amazing lives will find this an interesting read. Caitlin has added hugely to the body of knowledge about Elephant communication. It is part adventure story, as most intrepid young scientists who venture into Africa for their PHD theses discover. It tells of the beauty and terror and difficulties of this most diverse land and her rich wildlife.

Caitlin's book tells of her discoveries, elephant communication research, years of working with people in the Caprivi region to combat Elephant/Human conflict as well as her memorable times in hides stalked by lion and all the other adventures.

The book is well written for the most part, does lose some momentum toward the end of the book but this would appraer to be editing rather than Caitlin's writing. I thoroughly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for animal lovers, host of Animal Tails.......2007-04-28

An intricate balance exists between humans and nature that undergirds even the most basic experiences. Ecological researcher, Caitlin O'Connell has spent her professional life exploring the lesser-known aspects of this relationship through her study of elephant behavior in sub-Saharan Africa, shedding light on their value within society and promoting the need for continued conservation and outreach. In THE ELEPHANT'S SECRET SENSE: The Hidden Life of the Wild Herds of Africa , O'Connell uncovers the fascinating and complex communication system of elephants, and conveys the deeper importance of this astounding discovery on modern African society.

4 out of 5 stars An absolute page-turner.......2007-04-06

This book is a fascinating look into the world of elephants and the scientists who study them. I was humbled by Caitlin O'Connell's courageous, intelligent, and compassionate approach to working with these complex animals and the people who must learn to share the land with them.

5 out of 5 stars An astounding achievement and truly riveting story.......2007-03-16

I read this whole book from start to finish on a series of flights that I took recently and I was totally taken with the story and the science behind it. I couldn't put it down and I haven't read a book in 10yrs! From a phenomenal underlying technological journey merges the principles of many scientific disciplines ranging from zoology, biology, acoustics, geophysics, chemistry, mechanics, electronics, mathematics, not to mention anthropology.

As a physicist, I loved the explanation of acoustic coupling and aliasing, a very impressive bridge, making connections between fundamental processes that are essential in tying together a very complex phenomenon.

There were tragic elements to the story that were horrific and left me in tears, but at the same time, a remarkable account of caring and human bonding. Congratulations to the author. I can't wait for her next book!

5 out of 5 stars My baby loves the book.......2007-10-10

My 16 months old really enjoyed the book. She likes the graphics - which is done in black and white. We adults enjoyed the actual reading portion. The information is very educational. I can see my baby reading this book with a different perspective when she is older.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-09-29

A truly beautiful and creative book that reminds us of those great typography designers such as Aldus Manutius, Nicolas Jenson or Claude Garamond. My child loved discovering wild (and sadly endangered) animals through the pages of Gone Wild.

1 out of 5 stars Boring to children.......2007-09-11

This book was totally uninteresting to my grandchildren. It's a book that adults think will catch the interest of little ones and does not.

5 out of 5 stars wild and wonderful.......2007-05-22

this is a wonderfuly illustrated book that manages to incorporate the many species of endangered animals names with the letters of the alphabet. While I bought it for my grandson(2) he is too young to appreciate it, so I have put it away for him to enjoy in the years ahead. I recommend it for the art work and for all the information that is on each page.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the home or school library.......2007-04-13

Ostensibly about the alphabet, this book teaches so much more. Through clever illustrations, McLimans introduces children (and adults!) to a variety of endangered animals. Each page contains a stylized black-and-white illustration of the animal in the form of a letter along with a separate stylized red illustration of the animal. For instance, the head of the bald-headed Ukari is integrated into the shape of the letter U, while the entire animal is portrayed in red next to the letter design. Each page also contains facts about the animal (such as its natural habitat and potential threats).

Students, teachers, and parents interested in exotic or unusual animals or becoming more aware of environmental issues will find this book worthwhile. This book is appropriate for families or classrooms of mixed ages since younger children can practice their letters while older children can learn about these unusual and endangered animals.

Now I don't usually buy guides for games, in fact, this one is the only guide I have for games anyway, not to mention, animal crossing WW is a very hard game to master, It includes 11 pages of cool designs ideas and details of how to draw them, a complete item list (with pictures of the items) a furniture series list that has a list of all the furniture series (like lovely, kiddie, modern ect...) with a pictures of all the items and what the room looks like when the series is completed, a special character list of all the special characters and when to find them, a neighbor list of all the neighbors that could move into your town, and each profile has there personality, picture of them, and their tag phrase. a HRA (happy room academy) guide that shows how to score big with the HRA, a bug list, show when and where to find all the bugs, a fish guide, showing when and where to find all the fish, a fossil guide, showing all the fossils that can be found, a clothing list, showing all the shirts/hats/glasses/helmets that can be found and where to find them, and again, a item list showing all the items and where to get them.
a Gyriod list, showing pictures and names of every single gyriod.
a "Quick bell guide" of easy ways of getting big bells, and showing all the house upgrades and how to find them. a "friendship guide" of how to get neighbors to like you, that might even result in the neighbor giving you a picture of them that you can put in your house!
and a "Starter guide" for people who just got the game and the guide basically walks you through you beggining of the game, so you don't get frustrated
Overall,
The guide has a little one for everyone, rather your in the start or middle or even think you know everything, it is helpfull to have,
in layout it gets a: 9/10
in information it gets a: 10/10
and in durabillty of the actually book, it gets a: 8 and a half/10
P.S.
This is a great guide to get with the game!

I bought this guide for my girlfriend, and she has used it intensively for over a month now. Some game-items has been hard to find or get, and this guide has helped her a lot and made her very happy. To be honest, it's more like an encyclopedia than a guide, but overall it has a nice design and pages full of every little detail you've ever wanted to know about the strange, quirky and funny Animal Crossing world. If you like to visit Animal Crossing every day, this guide will make your Wild World experience so much better.

Book Description

Raised in the wild by intelligent, language-using wolves, in her teens Firekeeper was abducted back into the lands of men, where her upbringing as a wolf helped her survive the deadly intrigues of human beings. One of the first things she learned in Hawk Haven was that magic was a thing to be feared and despised. Long ago, all the human kingdoms were ruled by powerful sorcerers. Then a plague came and the sorcerers died. Nobody misses them. Much was lostbut still, nobody misses them. Yet as Firekeeper has travelled and grown wiser in the ways of human beings, shes learned that the true story was more complex. In coming to the country of the Liglim, she, Derian Carter, and Blind Seer discovered that magic is still working in the world, and that it isnt always the evil theyd been warned against. But it also turned out that the old plague specifically targeted magic users. And when Firekeeper and her friends learned to open the gates between worlds, the plague came back with them. Firekeeper, Blind Seer, and Derian Carter survived the plague: not unchanged, but still themselves. Now Firekeeper is determined to learn the nature of the plagueand if she can, to end it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Firekeeper Expands Horizons.......2007-09-15

Wolf's Blood (2007) is the sixth fantasy novel in the Wolf series, following Wolf Hunting. In the previous volume, Firekeeper and Blind Seer foiled a group of Nexans attempting to open a gate to escape from the island. Afterward, those from the New World called a general meeting of the Nexans to decide their next move, giving them the choice of cooperation or exile. Meddler asked for a favor from Firekeeper, taking a kiss to allow him to manifest on Nexus.

In this novel, five months later, the conquerors of Nexus are stymied due to the dangers of querinalo -- the Fire Plague -- to any newcomers with magical abilities. Having no way of identifying those with magic, reinforcements cannot be brought in from the New World. Since Blind Seer caught the illness, they are even afraid to bring in more yarimaimalom.

Meddler interrupts Firekeeper's dreams to suggest that she search for the source of the illness. The Nexans start looking through their archives, but the ruling council also sends Firekeeper to the New World to ask for assistance from the maimalodalum. The combined searches indicate that querinalo is really a curse developed by a sorcerer named Virim. Firekeeper and Blind Seer set off to find Virim or his descendents.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer travel back to the New World through a gate terminating in New Kelvin. After exiting the gate, they discover Grateful Peace and Citrine waiting for them. Explaining their presence, they arrange for periodic contacts through the gate and resume their journey.

In this story, the Old World nations discover that the Nexus gates are blocked. King Bryessidan of Mires is one of the first to be informed and he calls a meeting of interested parties to discuss the situation. Six other nations send emissaries to the meeting in the Kingdom of the Mires.

The ambassadors, emissaries and Once Dead at the meeting conclude that the government of Nexus has changed hands. They decide to force the gates and invade Nexus. King Hurwin suggests a simultaneous sea invasion of the island. Planning and plotting begin immediately.

This story brings several plot threads to resolution, but not to any final conclusion. Magic seems to be destined to play a more prominent part in the expanded culture of the Old and New Worlds. The new plot elements really deserve a sequel.

Highly recommended for Lindskold fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magical powers, realpolitik and unusual relationships.

-Arthur W. Jordin

3 out of 5 stars Far from Lindskold's best.......2007-09-03

Books 1-3 of this series I loved, books 4-6 I liked less well, with book #6 Wolf's Blood, being my least favorite. But I did finish it. In Wolf Hunting (#5) they came to the Nexus Islands. In this book they must defend the Islands from their trading partners who find the magical gates closed. Meanwhile, they have made many friends whose aid they enlist in the struggle. Also, there is much search for identity in this novel: are you who you look like, feel like, or who you love? And who does Firekeeper love? Trust is important to this novel, should she and the others trust the Meddler?. How much? But mostly, this is a dense, hard to read, ultimately, to me, unfulfilling novel.
I'd recommend Wen Spencer's Ukiah Oregon series, with somewhat similar plotlines and questions, instead...
I'd also recommend Lindskold's own Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls, which is not at all similar.

4 out of 5 stars Still worth the read.......2007-05-22

The series is still going strong and managing to bring ever new elements into play.
Some long time characters are a bit neglected (e.g. Elise) some make a bit of a reappearance (e.g. Grateful Peace), many of the Yarimaimalom stay two dimensional while other new/newish characters take up the gap.
Firekeeper and Blind Seer further mature as does their relationship.
The Old World characters become alive only to go back to being mostly ignored toward the end. So the book could have done with a bit more cohesion between and within the characters but the plot was always interesting.

This all sounds a bit mixed but I did enjoy the read and would definitely buy the book again if I hadn't already.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, great series.......2007-05-15

According to the author this is the last book in the series. I have enjoyed all the books in this collection, some more than others. This is one of the 'more than others' books. The author has done a good job of tying up many loose ends, although I wish more time could have been spend with some of the characters, I guess there is only so much room in a book.
To really appreciate this book a reader should be familiar with the story line. I would recommend reading the earlier books in the series.
I also can't help but wonder, given the ending of the book, if the author hasn't left a bit of room for another book.

3 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-05-13

Wolf's Blood isn't really what I expected. I couldn't wait to read the others in the series; but this one seems to have gotten off track some how. I read 3 other books while reading it. Kinda a let down.

Book Description

Nick Brandt depicts the animals of East Africa with an intimacy and artistry unmatched by other photographers who choose wildlife as their subject. He creates these majestic sepia and blue-tone photos contrasting moments of quintessential stillness with bursts of dramatic action by engaging with these creatures on an exceptionally intimate level, without the customary use of a telephoto lens. Evocative of classical art, from dignified portraits to sweeping natural tableaux, Brandt's images artfully and simply capture animals in their natural states of being. With a foreword by Alice Sebold and an introduction by Jane Goodall, On This Earth is a gorgeous portfolio of some of the last wild animals and a heartfelt elegy to a vanishing world.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography.......2007-09-27

I bought this book as a gift for someone who had just visited East and South Africa. They were thrilled with the absolutely beautiful photography and the memories it evoked of their trip.

5 out of 5 stars Just Stunning.......2007-08-31

I own many, many photography/art books and this one without a doubt is my favorite.

The photography is simply stunning. Brant shoots his work on medium format infrared film and that is a great combination to use.

Don't even think about not getting this book, just do it.

5 out of 5 stars Africa, my love.......2007-06-27

Having travelled extensively in Africa and being a keen photographer myself, I was happy to find this title in one of the Dutch photography magazines. The book is apparently not for sale in Holland, so I bought it at Amazon's.
My collection of photography books consists mainly of black and white photography. I am sure buyers will love the images in this book as much as I do, allbeit some pictures are a bit over the top, due to the infrared film used. Nevertheless the photos are just overwhelming; it feels like standing there yourself!
Next to 'The Great Migration' by Carlo Mari (which has a different approach) and 'Pink Africa' (also by Carlo Mari, and obviously in color) this book is among my favorite books on wildlife in Africa!

5 out of 5 stars Images of untold beauty and magnificence........2007-05-31

Nick Brandt is one of the most talented and sensitive photographers of the 21st century.
His vision and technique is unmatched.
The patience involved in capturing these sometimes rare creatures is incredible let alone to produce such aweinspiring images.

Great photo's of, for us, familiar parts of Africa. Shows the game in a different light.
Every new page is an inspiration! Not only for photografers but for travellers also.

Based on Marc Bekoff's years of experience studying the social communication patterns of a wide range of animals, this important book shows that animals have rich emotional lives. Not only can animal emotions teach us about love, empathy, and compassion, argues Bekoff — they require us to radically rethink our current relationship of domination and abuse of animals. Award-winning scientist Bekoff skillfully blends extraordinary stories and anecdotes of animal grief, joy, embarrassment, anger, and love with the latest scientific research confirming the existence of emotions that commonsense experience has long implied. The author also explores the evolutionary purposes of emotions in a wide range of different species, showing how science is discovering brain structures that produce emotions, how we can track an evolutionary continuum based on shared brain structures among species, and how new information is being revealed by noninvasive neurological research
techniques. Filled with Bekoff's light humor and touching stories, The Emotional Lives of Animals is a clarion call for reassessing both how we view animals and how we treat them.

5 out of 5 stars Scientific truths written for the lay audience.......2007-09-13

Marc Bekoff has rattled more than a few cages in his long career as a cognitive ethologist, but that does not make what he has to say any less true. This book summarizes the case for recognizing the similarities we share with our non-human mammalian companions, and it does so with flair, as well as attention to scientific detail.

For scientists or simply science buffs, this book has plenty to satisfy, but it's not just for them. This book is more for the average American who has always sensed the truths of non-human emotional lives (or maybe even has not), but is curious about the science behind the facts.

I have long been fond of saying "a mammalian brain is a mammalian brain is a mammalian brain, whether it belongs to you, your cat or my horse." Marc Bekoff makes this same statement with much more clarity and deeper understanding.

This book should leave you with a greater respect for the lives of the non-humans we share this planet with, and a deeper understanding of the ways our experiences here are the same, rather than focusing on what's different. It turns out the similarities are greater than the differences!

But all the science aside, this is also a book filled with great stories of observations of scientists and laypeople alike that back up the studies. Stories like the one told by an e-mail friend of mine, who witnessed two young mice trapped, where one helped the other to recover rather than just seeking its own salvation (I wonder if humans would have had the same level of compassion!).

This book should change your life. If it doesn't then your mind must be very closed, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Ethical Thesis: Touching Stories........2007-09-10

Do no harm is the essence of this book. It provides colorful insight into the real emotional lives of various animals. The author used a wide variety of sources, & field observations from wildlife biologists. The section on neurobiology were the most interesting for me. The fact that animals share several of our neural structures for emotion came as no surprise to this lay person. I have always felt {& have been bashed plenty for it}, that animals often represent the better half of human nature that we sometimes submerge. Dogs, Reptiles, Monkeys, Rats, Moon Bears, Whales & Elephants are all here. The latter are probably the most fascinating creatures in the book? The authors advocacy for animals was very refreshing to this animal lover. His basic thesis gives us a crucial point, "that if we are not certain about an animals emotions, we should presume that they often feel exactly what we humans do." For that compassionate view I had to up my four star impression to a hearty five.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, sensative and scientific.......2007-08-14

wonderful exploration of cognitive ethology. Beckoff is not afraid to explore the sensitive side of the animal kingdom and use hard science to draw dynamic and bold conclusions that any animal lover knows to be true.

5 out of 5 stars A splendid and important book.......2007-07-13

The Emotional Lives of Animals is a book rich in drama and beauty--as are the lives of our fellow animals. Persuading us with scientific evidence, personal experience, and heartwarming stories, Bekoff shows us how all of us--mammals and fish, birds and reptiles, humans and non- -- share many of the same emotions, social constructions and responses. This is a book I wish every human on the planet could read. It would change the world. And it well may yet. Thank you, Marc Bekoff, for your scientific acuity, your beautifully chosen words, and your warm heart.

5 out of 5 stars Of Course Animals Feel Things.......2007-06-07

I love the studies that try to make chimps 'speak' our language. How egocentric of us: how about scientists trying to speak their language and being tested on that? Just because we wear clothes doesn't make us the only feeling creatures God made. Ever see an animal run from headlights? Your pet in a bad mood? Puppies cuddle? Why is this even an issue? Because traditionally, feelings belonged to women and everyone knows women, children and the elderly don't rate worth a hoot so why should feelings in animals rate? With more men like this author, all that is changing. But until 'men' in science realize analysis is only so good and that feelings coupled with intelligence and intuition is what makes the world go round, we will continue to have this ridiculous debate. Let's face it. We just recently decided babies feel pain. Why? Because anything that can't talk is considered 'below' men and non-entities. Until the silent, pawed and everything that doesn't go to Harvard is afforded respect, we will join with this author in his quest to prove animals have feelings. So many of us have known this all along -
the same people who know that children feel and remember.

    Book Description

Boynton rocks! So does Blues Traveler, who perform a stomping version of the title song, a moody rock journey that Boynton wrote especially for them. And then there’s Alison Krauss with “Evermore.” And Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme—really—who do the “Boring Song.” The Spin Doctors, who channel rock’s rebellious side—with a taste of punk—for “Tantrum”: “No No No, I don’t want to, I don’t want to./No no no, I don’t want to, no no./Leave me alone. Leave me alone./LEAVE ME ALONE.” And the sweetly unexpected pairing of “Weird Al” Yankovic and Kate Winslet (yep, Kate Winslet) as a duet singing “I Need a Nap.”

Full of attitude, full of fun, all lit up with star power, and boasting a variety of Top 40 styles—rock and roll, blues, hip-hop, and power pop— Dog Train is the third book-and-CD production by Sandra Boynton, following the #1 New York Times bestselling, Grammy-nominated Philadelphia Chickens and the recently re-released Rhinoceros Tap. Like Philadelphia Chickens, features all original songs recorded by a mix of big-name acts and great voices, for the pleasure of the parents as much as the kids. Packaged similarly to the previous Boynton & Ford recordings, Dog Train is also a full-color book that features a portion of each song’s lyrics set as a little story, accompanied by Boynton’s irresistible hippos, cows, dogs, and more dogs. Full lyrics appear in the back.

    2 out of 5 stars not what I expected.......2007-10-13

I was expecting a book/CD for children. The music is too "rock and roll" for my child. She didn't want to listen to songs with words she couldn't distinguish.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and funny.......2007-10-04

In my opinion, it's not quite as good as Boynton's Philadelphia Chickens... but we still love most of the songs in this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Dog Train.......2007-09-06

This is a great musical experience. We got it for our one year old son and ended up buying one for all his friends' first birthday presents. The songs are fun and peppy. They are really understood by parents. As a two year old my son now plays drums and dances to his very favorite song "Pots and Pans." I highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Hip music for tots to hop to.......2007-09-04

We too, were new to Boynton albums. Both of my children were raised on the books, but the album was stumbled upon in a used book sale. It was a huge hit with both my 5 and 9 year olds. I'm so glad that Ms. Boynton has used artists with recognizable styles to do some children's songs. The lyrics are catchy and the songs are grown-up without being boring ('cept the "Boring Song" - Grandma loved THAT!)

Spin Doctors, Five for Fighting, and Weird Al are some of my favorite artists, anyway!

    It's family fun for all.

    5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-08-28

The music on this cd is great for both parents and kids! Great lyrics. Both my 3 year old and 1 year old sway to the music. My 3 year old picks the book for bedtime and we have to sing the songs to him. A hit in our house!
