In the mid-1980s, Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, decided they had had enough of the hectic pace and inherent insecurities of life in Los Angeles and made tracks for the historic town of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. At first they rented rooms in a hotel. Then, when the hotel became less appealing, they graduated to renting an apartment. Almost inevitably, they eventually found themselves buying a 250-year-old hacienda on the verge of collapse, with wonderfully elegant Spanish colonial architecture and a garden brimming with papayas, avocados, and custard apples.
What followed was a love affair with a country and its people that has endured. On Mexican Time is a lyrical attempt to capture the Mexican magic that bewitched the two of them. Cohan introduces us to a quirky cast of Mexicans and expats, including murderers, idealists, philanderers, and writers. Spanning 15 years, the book conveys something of the curiously intangible passage of time, as we watch girls become mothers, marriages drift apart, and friends come and go. The text is rich with sensuous details, and Cohan is excellent at conveying the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of a country that he clearly adores.
On Mexican Time is much less of a glib chronicle than other books of the "charming new life in paradise" genre. Although he is not averse to the odd moment of portentousness, Cohan makes a gentle and elegant guide through the experiences of expat life in San Miguel. --Toby Green
Book Description
An American writer and his wife find a new home—and a new lease on life—in the charming sixteenth-century hill town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
When Los Angeles novelist Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, visited central Mexico one winter they fell under the spell of a place where the pace of life is leisurely, the cobblestone streets and sun-splashed plazas are enchanting, and the sights and sounds of daily fiestas fill the air. Awakened to needs they didn’t know they had, they returned to California, sold their house and cast off for a new life in San Miguel de Allende.
On Mexican Time is Cohan's evocatively written memoir of how he and his wife absorb the town's sensual ambiance, eventually find and refurbish a crumbling 250-year-old house, and become entwined in the endless drama of Mexican life. Brimming with mystery, joy, and hilarity,
On Mexican Time is a stirring, seductive celebration of another way of life—a tale of Americans who, finding a home in Mexico, find themselves anew.

My favorite book.......2007-09-08
I bought this book 7 years ago and am currently reading it yet again. This is one of those books I can't read enough. I never get bored with this book. Cohan uses all the senses to bring the reader into the story and paint the most beautiful mental portrait of Mexico.

A wonderful story of a gringo and his Japonesa wife living in San Miguel de Allende.......2007-07-04
I absolutely loved this book!! The writer's style was such that I could vividly imagine myself in SMA during the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties. The characters were so real and full of life: the gardener who had a mistress, the man who killed someone twice, the young girls who helped around the house and grew to be women with their own girls, and many many more characters came to life. The book was like a great movie you don't wish would end and when it does it leaves you sad that it's over. Luckily for us Tony Cohan has another book, Mexican Days: Journeys into the Heart of Mexico, on his life in Mexico which I'll be quickly ordering to pour through just like I did with "On Mexican Time".
A well crafted, extended essay on a premier Mexico destination.......2006-11-27
I have recently returned from San Miguel de Allende, a centuries old town of great importance in Mexican history as it was here that independence from Spain began. Cohan is a perceptive and careful writer who well captures the sensuous and culturally deep experience that is San Miguel. If you visit there, get this book and read it at the conclusion of your stay. You will see that he has said what you wanted to say about San Miguel. Highly recommended, as is San Miguel de Allende itself.
enjoy Mexico vicariously!.......2006-10-11
This author has a wonderful style that made me feel like I was there with him, experiencing his zen-like transformation from fast-lane city dweller to truly connected human being. His luxurious use of prose and vivid descriptions, combined with his sincere love for Mexico, made reading this book a most enjoyable vicarious adventure.
¡A mí me gusta!.......2006-09-12
I think he nails it.
It is the Mexico of those 15 years, and it is the gringo and gringa he brought to it. It was no paradise, but it was a great place to stare at the walls and the sky to draw closer to one's real wants. His discovery of the altiplano and its various cultures was for him like the end of Candide's philosophical journey. This was it for Cohan, a place to tend to his humanity, perhaps to finally understand it. In the end he and his wife only fear too much "progress". The status quo works well for them, both place and age appropriately.
Obviously, it is a work for those of us who have experienced Colonial Mexico, contemplated living there, but decided not. However, it is also a book for those who have looked beyond their own accident of place of birth, for those who have wondered what might have been, or could be. His characters might just help with the answers. They are varied hybrids, interesting all, of that singular experience called San Miguel de Allende.
And the house on Calle Flor? Well, it's the story within the story---all you ever need to know about Mexico revealed as the story of a house.

Book Description
Nearly 2.5 million couples will walk down the aisle in 2001 and each couple will want to find the perfect words to make their wedding as eloquent as it is elegant. Fathers and mothers of brides and grooms, bestmen, maids of honor, friends, and family will want to find a creative way to express the sentiments of the day. This book will show them how.
With hundreds of classical and contemporary poems, quotes, quips, and blessings to choose from, no one involved in the wedding celebration will be at a loss for words. And, unlike other guides, Words for the Wedding takes readers beyond vows and explains (with examples) not only how to make a great toast but how to use quotes inventively for pre-wedding parties, invitations, receptions, and more! A must-have guide for anyone involved with a wedding.

Great for Words, Not So Good for Instructions.......2007-01-30
I should begin by saying I am a practicing non-denominational and interfaith minister. I've been writing and performing marriage ceremonies for many years, now. "Words for the Wedding" is an excellent source of non-Biblical readings, poems, quotations, and other words that can be used within a wedding ceremony, or in a toast, or even on an invitation or thank-you card. It contains many citations I have never seen before, and which are really quite good! On that score, this book is great!
Unfortunately, the authors also offer instructions on writing your own ceremony and vows, and how one interacts with clergy or other individuals who officiate wedding ceremonies. This part is a little misleading.
Most embers of the clergy have a specific liturgy they use for weddings. More liberal practitioners, will often create a place for "personal vow" statements and include specially requested readings in the ceremony. And, we often adjust our content based on the preferences of the bride and groom. But for many reasons, the overall ceremony will follow a basic structure and most of the specific content will be chosen by the person performing the ceremony. There are very few marriage ceremonies that are actually written by the bride and groom.
So my suggestion is, use the content of this book as a treasure trove of interesting and romantic writings that can be incorporated into your wedding. But please, check with the person who will perform the ceremony before spending a lot of time planning and writing your own text.
It has tons of Readings for your wedding day!.......2005-12-28
From Shakespeare to Sleepless in Seattle, this is one of the best weddding vow books I have read. It offers many reading to choose from. Creating a day that will be unique to the couple getting married, and choosing their own vows.
A mixed resource.......2003-03-12
Lots of quotations in this book -- many too short or of dubious distinction to include in a wedding ceremony (do you really want to quote a TV or movie character in your wedding?? I don't). The material unique to this volume seemed as if it would be much more useful as humorous or thoughtful snippets to use in the wedding program or toasts. The poetry and short readings are largely selections that you can find elsewhere (many of them the usual suspects), so the real contribution of this book is in the more popular cultural references mentioned above, if your sensibility tends that way.
The thematic/contextual organization is strong and fairly comprehensive -- covering not only the ceremony, but also other kinds of "words" performed at a wedding, such as toasts. I'd suggest using this book with a more substantive and original anthology, such as Into the Garden.
From Romantic to Raucous..........2002-12-12
After I read a lot of these type of books in preparation for my own wedding, I selected this one because of its wide range of time periods, subjects, and types of quotes and selections. Words for the Wedding is perfect if you're interested in a good read with lots of fun, inspiring, or romantic shorter selections for incorporating into other places such as programs, favors, personal vows and toasts. I will admit though, that I did not like many of the longer pieces as much as the shorter ones.
Really useful.......2002-06-29
This is a great book; packed with a huge variety of quotes, poems, excerpts. Perhaps my one complaint is that many of the quotes are too short to be used as readings, if that's what you're looking for. But overall the book uses a wide range of creative sources (movies, love letters, poetry, plays, etc.) and will give you lots of ideas and starting points for elements of your own wedding.

Excellent Resource for writing your own vows!.......2007-07-11
This book has traditional vows as well as ideas for blending families, including others in the ceremony, such as parents or children. It also has a nice selection of readings for ceremonial or invitation use. excellent resource to use to customize your wedding and create the perfect day! Vows can be used in whole or in part, combining several of the samples to create exactly what you want to say.
ho hum, nothing special.......1999-12-29
Very traditional & boring. Too many explicitly Christian vow examples, not enough variety of experience or style. Oh, & it's all painfully straight too.
Amazon.com
Very personal and specialized wedding vows are a constant need. This new book includes sixty-three vows and declarations of love plus a lot more. It tells how to plan this most important part of your wedding. It suggests how to work with your pastor, what to include in your vows and how to write your own. The suggested vows, which may be edited to fit your special feelings, are in both monolog and dialog form. They are short enough to be easily memorized. Beautiful wedding photography throughout.

A Wonderful Guide.......2002-01-06
This book was a originally a gift to me. By combining parts from the many sections, my fiancee and I were able to come up with truly individual vows that said exactly what we wanted without being overly sappy. My fiancee is an older gentleman who is very plain spoken and he had no trouble finding exactly what he wanted to say. All in all this book was a wonderful reference guide.
Extremely Helpful!.......2001-05-08
This was extremely helpful in giving me ideas on how to express my feelings when I got married two years ago. I knew what I wanted to say and it gave me enough imput to get my own thoughts together and come up with something from the heart.
Not very realistic--keep looking.......2000-06-01
I did not find this book very helpful! The sample vows and promises did not seem very realistic to me. Most of them are in dialog form, and I've never been to a wedding where the bride and groom exchange vows/promises alternating line by line with eachother. I'd keep looking if I were you, that's what I'll be doing.
a very helpful book to me very personable.......1999-02-01
I found the book to be outstanding some of the vows really hit home with me. I looked at alot of books on wedding vows and found yours to the modst helpful

This book is a gem........2006-07-01
I bought this book originally when it was first published, intending to give it as a gift but started reading it and I've had it ever since.Wise choice.I enjoyed this book. This book will please those who want something unique.Something different.Something personalised that expresses their love for each, forever.I found this book easy to read.Having a copy of a basic wedding vowels to compare to I found so many beautiful ways to say it differently.I was very impressed with this book.If you can find a copy grab it.This book is a gem.
Good start..........2004-10-26
I found this book to be a good start in writing own vows... or some sentences from the book can be combined to create a new vow. Probably this is what we are going to do with my fiance. I didn't finda ny particular vow that applys to any of us, however I found a couple very beatiful ones that made me cry :)
Good information, but poor organization makes it hard to use.......2003-02-28
This book is specifically for couples wanting to write their wedding vows, whether by borrowing the words of others or using their own. There are separate chapters for secular versus religious vows, and there are also shorter chapters addressing special topics/situations such as uniting as individuals and special settings. Finally, the author offers a questionnaire to guide you in writing your own vows from scratch.
The suggestions in this book are good, as there are many beautiful and uniquely worded statements. However, the chapters themselves offer absolutely no organization, making it hard to determine exactly how the words should be used. For example, it is sometimes unclear where one segment ends and the next begins--ie, whether certain sections are designed to be used together or separately. Furthermore, there are no guidelines as to whether the couple should repeat the vows after the officiant, repeat them together, say them in exchange, etc. A final criticism is that the last two sections of the book--a personalized record of your wedding and an index of first lines--are virtual useless, as couples are unlikely to use this book as a keepsake and the index would only be helpful if you already knew the words you wanted.
One final note: if you are looking for a book to help you write you entire wedding ceremony from start to finish, this book is definitely not for you. It addresses vows only and does not contain suggestions for other ceremony elements such as the readings and the ring exchange. However, if you simply want some ideas of how to write your vows and/or are considering writing your own, you may find this book to be helpful.
The ORIGINAL and STILL THE BEST!.......2002-11-26
After reading a full page article about this book in Brides Magazine many years ago, I instantly ran out and bought it for my upcoming wedding. "Exceptional" didn't began to describe it! There were tons of beautifully written secular vows, a section of inspiring religious vows, vows for every imaginable holiday theme, and even for special settings--like garden, candlelight, seashore, and mountaintop weddings. Beyond all that, I couldn't believe how this book was so ahead of it's time with unique approaches to vows for re-marriages after a divorce, and even addressing the children in marriages of single parents. I could go on and on, but let it suffice to say that although many other books have since tried to imitate this original, "With These Words" is still my #1 choice for engagement & wedding shower presents!
And now, to top that I just read in Woman's Day magazine that the author just came out with a new book titled "Loving Vows: Inspiring Promises for Building and Renewing Your Marraige" that helps couples KEEP their wedding promises...Guess I have the perfect wedding present now too :-)
Fair advertising.......2002-09-16
This is probably a great book for alot of folks, but if you aren't Christian, don't bother. The Knot Wedding guide book has more to offer EVERYONE than this book.
