Book Description
This delightful book is one of the first three volumes of Oxford University Press's new Pocket Guide natural history series. The series fills the need for lighter weight guides for those who want to find out about the common organisms they come across during countryside excursions without having the specialist knowledge required to make detailed species identifications. All the books in the series are attractively designed and generously illustrated with plentiful high quality colour line drawings and photographs throughout. The accompanying text is short but informative, with notes on general biology as well as on identification. Small Woodland Creatures covers the commoner 'creepy-crawlies' and their artefacts likely to be encountered on woodland walks - from ants to worms and from galls to woodworm holes. They are arranged by animal group and also by the place they might be found, whether inside fungi or wrapped in leaves. Sections on significant aspects of the animals' biology - parasitism, camouflage, and so forth - are introduced alongside the groups for which they are relevant. A pleasure to dip into, the book will be an invaluable accompaniment for woodland walks at any time of the year.

This book doesn't muster up.......2002-01-24
Nothing said that this book was about Northern European "small woodland creatures". It has little value here in North America, let alone NY State. There are lots of pictures (over 900), but most don't apply. There is no table of contents. The book is truly not a field guide, its hard covered, no easy "thumbing" thru to find certain critters. It is organized haphazardly and its index is primarily in the latin by species and genus. So if you're into European critters and know them by their latin name...this book might be good for you. For the lay person looking for a reference book to take on hikes, etc. FUGGEDABOUDIT!

Not What I Expected.......2007-07-07
This book was not what I expected - I would not recommend it at all. It stayed in the car packed away. I also bought Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, 2nd (Scenic Driving Series) and Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks (Outdoor Family Guides) which were excellent.
We used a different guide.......2007-05-15
We bought this book, but ended up using other guides. It is a fine reference for some people, but I'd recommend:
Yellowstone Treasures: The Traveler's Companion to the National Park (Great for more in-depth research)
and
National Geographic Road Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (NG Road Guides) (Quick roadside reference)
instead.
Excellent guide with great suggestions.......2006-11-29
My family went to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks last June and this guide was a great resource. At the moment, I'm planning another national park trip and pulled the book off the shelf so I could get a guide by the same author.
He marked Signal Mountain Lodge in GT as a "** find" and was it ever! It's managed by a different vendor than the other lodges in the park and I'd stay there again if I return. I used his suggestions for "If you can only go on one hike, do this..." and the suggestions were awesome. The hike to the top of Signal Mountain (most people drive rather than take the 6 mile easy walk) was so beautiful and peaceful that I hiked it a second time before leaving.
This book gave suggestions that you'd expect to get from a friend who has just visited an area and says "Hey let me give you this great tip."
I would definitely recommend this book.
The info that was not there.......2006-09-25
I`ve always heard these were good books , after I purchased this I found I must have been lied to. I`ll never buy another Frommer`s anything.
Great All-Around Reference Manual.......2006-06-28
We just got back from our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!). This book was GREAT! Everything stated was right on the money, and we loved the compactness of it. It was easy to just throw in a backpack or carry-on. We also liked how the book was set up. It was easy to understand and to navigate. If you're looking for a good general overall book, this is the one for you.
Along with this book, we also purchased the Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park - it gave a really good and comprehensive explaination of the hikes found in each of the parks.
Recommendation: Don't be turned off by the idea of eating in a "cafeteria" within the park. We tried them twice while on vacation (both in Yellowstone) and were pleasantly surprised. The food was reasonable and quite good! The diningrooms were really nice as well - the one at Old Faithful overlooks the geyser!
If visiting the town of Jackson (which was a bit too riff-raffy for us), check out the Snake River Brewery. The food was reasonable and very good, the beer and service excellent and the best part - no line! Due to it being located "off the beaten track" a bit, though easily within walking distance from the town square, it doesn't get visited by a lot of tourists. If traveling with children (like us), try sitting upstairs. They have some old video games like Astoids and Pacman which allowed us to enjoy our meal and relax while the kids played the games.

Good for the first few days, light on activities coverage.......2000-06-20
Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks good overall guide to the area. It's descriptions of the lodging choices and the dining descriptions were very good although it omitted the Geyser Grill in the Old Faithful area. The descriptions of activities in GT were very good, but the descriptions of activities in YNP were lacking. There were some omissions: the Antelope Creek Drainage area and the Brink of the Upper/Lower Falls trails. Some felt the Norris Geyser Basin highly overrated as was the West Thumb Geyser Basin and Osprey Falls. This book is a great starting point but by no means should it be the only book you have. It's perfect for making your dining and lodging choices but suffers in adequately describing activities (for that check out 'An Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks' by Lisa Gollin Evans).

Great material in a compact size.......2006-03-08
This book has been a great help in planning a family vacation to the National Parks. And the compact size (about 4 inches by 8 inches) means the book will be small enough to fit in a fanny pack for easy reference during the trip. Kudos, Frommer's.
Frommer's Yellowstone & Grand Teton Nat'l. Parks.......2006-02-17
This book will be a great pocket guide because of its size and information. The book gives insite into the places to stay in the parks as well as dining and recreation. Very helpful!!
Wonderful and very useful book.......2005-11-21
My family spent 2 weeks in Yellowstone, Grand Teton's and Jackson Hole, Wy in June 2005. We purchased this book months prior to our visit, highlighted the "MUST DO'S" and scratched off things we were not interested in--long hikes. This wonderul book helped us plan our trip so that we got the most for our time and money. I would like to see more resturant info but it was a very nice tool to have. If you get to Gardner, Montana this book recommends a 'hole-in-the-wall' resturant called Hateful Helen's. The book says 'not much to look at but wonderful food' and we agree! Best hamburgers you've ever eaten. We had a wonderful vacation. Thanks Frommers!
Good reference book.......2005-10-06
This was one of many books I purhased for our first trip to Yellowstone and this was good for a general overview.
One of the best.......2005-08-19
We were planning our first trip to Yellowstone and were new to Frommer's guide books, but we thought we'd give it a whirl. I'm glad we did, as it gave us great insight to places in Yellowstone we never knew existing! I would highly recommend Frommer's guide books to any destination, as it not only provides you with off the beaten places to go, but also suggests areas to avoid if you are short on time. From now on, we plan all our vacations with Frommer's.

Between the towering horns of the Teton Range and the hot geyser blasts of Yellowstone's Old Faithful there's a lot of superb nature and wildlife to enjoy. While the hordes are lining up for a geyser photo op, you could be watching rare trumpeter swans, bald eagles, a buffalo, a lazy moose or two. Ed Lawrence summarized the best thermal displays (there's more than just Old Faithful), best day hikes, and best backcountry trails, where to camp, see the sunrise, take a drive, and eat. He covers it all, whether you've just a day to see as much as you can, or have a few weeks to hike off into the great beyond. With excellently detailed information on exploring the backcountry, boating and fishing, camping, driving, and avoiding the crowds, Lawrence's guide lets you know what's available, then helps you get what you came for. --Stephanie Gold

Great Resource for Planning Your Trip.......2000-06-24
This book was a great resource for planning and enjoying our trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons.
Great starter guide.......2000-04-14
This guide was a staple for our ten day trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. In locating places to stay and activities to do this is a book to lead you to other books and web sites. Its approach to trail descriptions also allows for a day hiker to figure out what trails are popular and easy and what are difficult. It gave us several great ideas as well like boating on Lake Yellowstone and cheaper ways of fingin lodging.
Reliable guide.......2000-01-10
One of the best travel guides I have ever used (and I have traveled all over the world). As of the summer of 1998, when I visited Yellowstone, the guide was highly accurate and offered very useful ideas on where to hike, where to stay, where to eat, etc. The authors clearly know Yellowstone intimately, and should be complimented for imparting their enthusiasm about this marvelous park. My trip was one of the memorable in my life, and I was very grateful for the help I received from this concise guide.
Great starting point but not the only book you should have.......1999-07-25
Although this is not the only book you should have for your trip to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, it's a must-have as a starting point. It's descriptions of the lodging choices were very good and we were happy with our decisions. The dining descriptions were also very good although it omitted the Geyser Grill in the Old Faithful area. The descriptions of activities in GT were very good but the descriptions of activities in YNP were merely okay and neither great nor complete. There were some omissions...chief among them were the Antelope Creek Drainage area and the Brink of the Upper/Lower Falls trails. We also found the Norris Geyser Basin highly overrated and the following highly underrated: West Thumb Geyser Basin, Midway Geyser Basin, Blacktail Plateau Drive and Osprey Falls. This book is a great starting point but by no means should it be the only book you have. It's perfect for making your dining and lodging choices but suffers in adequately describing activities (for that check out "An Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks" by Lisa Gollin Evans).

Where's the answers?.......2007-07-24
The book does not contain answers to its problem sets, which I don't find very helpful. Also, the grammar rules are often not very thoroughly explained.
Ultimate German Advanced vs. FSI/Barron's .......2007-06-12
Having completed both Barron's German I & II, I decided to try this to stay in practice while working abroad one summer. The layout is simple, and not dry as many would consider the FSI courses to be; however, as far as the breadth of material that is covered, I consider FSI to be superior.
FSI I & II covers the entire gamut of German grammar (from presnt tense to Konjunctiv/subjunctive), whereas the material in UGA seems to rest in between them. Thus, grammatically, FSI will take you beyond UGA. That said, the format of FSI might not be enjoyable for all as it is riddled with repetitive grammar drills. However, FSI is preferable for me.
So, in short: if you really enjoy laborious grammar exercises and would like to learn the full breadth of German grammar, FSI is certainly the one you want. UGA is an excellent program, but probably more geared towards those who are interested in practical situations and not in grammar mastery.
Outstanding!.......2007-01-05
This course is excellent! I am amazed by the entire thing. A really good
course for anyone wanting to learn German.
A very impressive effort that fills a much needed gap.......2003-12-09
In recent years, I've purchased over 20 German study texts, and the Living Language "Ultimate German" series is the best I've come across. The textbook offers tried-and-true, nuts-and-bolts grammar and vocabulary review, along with interesting, useful dialogs and cultural and business essays. The two sets of CDs -- one to accompany the text and another, parallel set for "on the go" review -- are equally well-produced and relevant (although two of my CDs were mislabeled).
As a businessman focusing on international marketing, I greatly appreciate the "real world" content and social settings of each chapter. German is the third foreign language I've studied, and I'm most impressed by how well the Living Language "Advanced" series fills the gap for those of us who are well-beyond the basics, but not yet ready for Goethe.
The content, organization and graded structure are far superior to the advanced German text books I used for classes last year at a major California university. Other advanced texts tend to forego the graded approach, where each lesson builds on vocabulary and grammar learned in the preceeding lesson, offering instead an amalgam of short stories or essays accompanied by vocabulary lists that too often feature less-than-relevant terms and expessions. Despite being a first cousin to English, German is a complex langauge with an excessively rich and nuanced vocabulary, and a graded structure is still necessary, in my opinion, even at an advanced level.
For those who are visually inclined, however, please note that the textbook contains no images or pictures, just text and vocabulary and grammar drills.
All in all, "Ultimate German Advanced" is a well-thought, well-structured, well-executed product. It's not the prettiest, most colorful textbook to be found, but it will put real-world German fluency well within your grasp.
From a 2-year highschool, 1-year college German study.......2002-04-03
When I originally bought the book, I didn't know that you could buy it with CD's. That would have helped tremendously, had I known. As it was, I sat down every lunch hour and did a lesson. Usually I only made it through the story (and looking up vocabulary). Then do the lesson on a future lunch hour. I thought the book was extremely helpful in explaining how things fit together. It also has pretty helpful cultural hints. I would also suggest All-Audio German (listen to it as much as you can, to perfect your pronunciation, you'll be glad you did). I also bought the English-German dictionary...for my Palm - this is an ABSOLUTE MUST if you are going to be going to Germany and you are serious about getting more fluent.

Customer Reviews:
Are you ready to step up to the plate and take the challenge?.......2006-12-19
I was an English major in college 25 years ago, at which time I also studied a lot of Spanish, having learned some as a child. Because I grew up in Florida near native speakers, my Spanish pronunciation is natural and fairly effortless.
What I lacked before I bought this course was a challenge with regard to the intricacies of Spanish grammar--all that boring stuff that people seem to think you can learn in a two-week course in Mexico. I have owned this course for three years, gone over it with a fine tooth comb, and I can tell you emphatically: it is excellent. It is not perfect. Yes, it has a couple of typographical errors. But those reviewers who criticize this course harshly, I would bet the farm, have no business studying such an advanced curriculum and should instead buy one of the intermediate Living Language programs, master it, then try this again.
Now that I have made that unkind comment about some of the language students who have reviewed this course, let me criticize it just a bit. The publishers have tried valiantly to condense the entire Spanish speaking world into one book, covering every culture from Madrid to Mexico. This is essentially impossible. Spoken in over 20 countries--within which there are many subcultures--the Spanish language in all its richness will never be captured in a single volume.
Some error checking next time, please.......2006-11-15
I like the book and tapes, but I have lost faith that what I am learning is being correctly translated for me. Example:
Spanish:
Bueno, contamos con lineas de discado directo internacional, internet, alquiler de computadoras e impresoras, y servicio de fax y fotocopias. Si necessita algo mas en particular, llamenme y vero lo que puedo hacer
English translation:
Well, we have direct-dial international phone lines, and there's a fax machine available in a store on the ground floor. If you need anything else, call me, and I'll see what I can do.
WHAT?? What happened to the internet, or renting the equipment. What ground floor? AY AY AY! I have found enough cases of this that it makes me wary of what I am learning.
Intensely Advanced Spanish Course.......2006-03-09
I'm a gringo who can speak & understand Spanish as a 2nd language, but my skills are rusty & native speakers have told me I have a strong accent. I've taken numerous Spanish CD programs during the last 2 years. This program is by far the most challenging. You need to understand Spanish or this program won't work for you. If you can watch a Spanish TV station and at least understand most of what is being said, this program will work for you. If not, go for something more intermediate. There are 8 CDs in pairs of 2 CDs. In the first set, you listen to a dialogue of native speakers in "real-time" speed and then the same dialogue is spoken more slowly for you to repeat in Spanish. In the second set, a very similar dialogue is presented along with grammatical lessons and more repeating or translating sentences. My only frustration with the CDs is that I'm quite often not quick enough to repeat the entire phrase before the CD moves on to the next phrase. Some of the sentences are so long that I wouldn't be able to remember the entire sentence in English. This is easily overcome -- I've just had to replay several lessons over and over before I was able to "check off" all my comprehension, translation and speaking assignments. For added interest, each dialogue is set in a specific country and centers around a genuine cultural point of interest. The book is very helpful. It expands on local dialects and regional interests for the targeted country in each lesson. The book includes exact translations of the dialogues on the CDs. This is the best audio course I've found to practice and improve my Spanish skills. I highly recommend it for gringos who can already communicate and want a truly advanced challenge to expand vocabulary & speaking skills.
Not quite the ultimate, but very good.......2005-09-12
I read, write and speak Spanish reasonably well, but like many individuals whose first language is English, I have my moments trying to follow Spanish spoken to me. This set has really been helpful in "tuning" my ear to listen to the spoken word as I prepare for another trip to Mexico. It is also a pretty decent review of Spanish grammar and vocabulary. Because I am perhaps more visual, I find the written materials to be a great help for my learning -- I really have not been successful with just oral materials. I actually purchased this after using a Living Language beginning French set and found it very helpful in beginning to recapture the French I studied 30 years ago in high school and then 20 years ago in a night course.
Great product for intermediate-level speakers.......2005-09-08
I am really enjoying these CDs...some people said that the Spanish was spoken too quickly...if that's your feeling, I say you're not an advanced speaker and you'd be better off looking for an intermediate level product. I wish that actual native spanish speakers spoke so clearly! It's true that folks do speak more quickly than your average spanish language training CD, and that's a good thing - the hardest part of "speaking" Spanish, for me, is understanding what other people are saying! Also, some reviewers mentioned that the CDs use the "vosotros" form - that's true, it does, but not too much, and it is used in some parts of the world, so I think it's a plus to have it in there. Overall, I would give this product 4.5 stars - but that's not an option, so I'm going with 5. I would like to have seen more content - more practice with grammar rather than vocabulary, etc. - but overall a great product for intermediate-advanced students.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Intermediate Book.......2007-09-19
Initially, I wasn't pleased with this book, but once I started using it a lot more, I increasingly grew fond of it's teaching method and the way the lessons are structured. The way it teaches the kanji is very good. It's not as advanced as it says, but I'd say it's suitable for someone who passed JLPT lvl 3.
Here's my suggestion: use the second half of the book with all Japanese. Don't waste your time with the first half (roomaji/English) except to check the English translation of the passages if you need to or review any grammar that goes over your head. If you can comprehend the CD, you probably don't need to do either of these things much.
The main problem I have with the book is it's business bias. This company (Living Language) tends to do this and for many, this isn't a problem, but for me, it'd be more interesting if the dialog mixed and matched between business and play since I go to Japan for both. I'd like to hear more informal dialog for one thing.
CDS are superb and book is pretty good.......2007-03-30
What I like best about this set is the realistic (albeit overly long) dialogues, practical business vocabulary and kanji reading practice. Im a beginner but decided to jump straight ahead to the advanced course because it seems (from the reviews here) that this repeats a lot of stuff from the basic any way. Also I have the Pimsleur CDS for the easier stuff and wanted to be in a more realistic "environment" where I dont understand 100% of what's being said.
I listened to the "AT HOME" CDS --- which are all Japanese dialogue --- and read the English (instead of romaji) transcript simultaneously. In this way, Ive learned by pseudo osmosis. After repeated listening, one can actually understand the gist of what's being said without having to translate every single word into English. I hope this means Im thinking in Japanese now. The "ON THE GO" CDS review basic grammar, phrases and vocabulary. Overall I love it!!!
Outstanding service and merchandise!!.......2007-02-20
Prompt Service, attractively and securely wrapped package, outstanding merchandise. A very reliable seller!!!
Not advanced at all.......2006-11-07
This book isn't bad, it's just not what the title claims. Advanced? Far from it! Don't buy this if you're expecting anything above low-intermediate level Japanese.
A bit easy for an advanced series.......2006-08-15
Great dialogues and useful situations but I was expecting something a little more difficult from the advanced series. I completed the basic-advanced series and thought it was fantastic. However, the advanced series teaches many of the grammar structures already taught in the intermediate section of the first book. Not to say it isnt a nice book, but from what I had learned from the first book, I easily understood the first five lessons on the CD the first time I listened to them. I only learned about three new words or so from the first five lessons. Not to say this isnt a nice series, but if you completed the beginner-intermediate book, you may find the advanced series a bit easy.
