Customer Reviews:
Rick Steves map of Rome, Florence, and Siena.......2007-09-08
I've been to the cities before but needed a new map for a up coming trip. The paper maps disintigrate and these maps are waterproof.
This is the most helpful map I've seen. The location of historic sights are all clearly marked. It even has the US Embassy in case there is a problem. Shopping is highlighted, and public transportation is easy to find. A great map! I just ordered the Paris map for the first leg of the trip.
Never alone.......2007-08-30
The Rick Steves' series of guidebooks are unique in that they not only tell you what you can see, but also offer advice as to what is worth your time. And most importantly the books tell you how to go about doing it, cheaply and efficiently. I traveled alone through Italy for four weeks using only this book, and never felt alone. These books are the only ones you need to have an outstanding vacation.
There are of course some small mistakes and misrepresentations in the book, but no more than any other book. I recommend also getting the corresponding Mona Winks Rick Steves' Mona Winks: Self-Guided Tours of Europe's Top Museums (5th Edition) book as a good complement.
Excellent Book........2007-08-11
The Book is excellent. Its a fantastic tool for planning your trip to Italy. Thew book equips you with crucial information which helps in saving time as well as money on the trip.
Disappointing.......2007-07-28
Before traveling to Italy, I reviewed this book and felt it would be extremely useful. In reality, there are huge gaps of information that a first time traveler would find helpful. The maps are sadly lacking in detail, to the point of being useless in some instances, the vocabulary list should be doubled, and contrary to Rick's recommendation, Pisa is well worth a visit!
Always informative.......2007-07-28
As usual, Rick Steeves makes exploring new countries pleasurable and easy. He suggests the important things to see, and some of the lccal treasures you might not think of, depending on your length of stay. I have stayed at his recommended hotels and never been disapointed. He does his homework!

Customer Reviews:
Packed with useful info!.......2007-10-18
We lived by this book for 4 days around Florence. The restaurants Rick suggests were really great (we tried 6 places), map is detailed, museum guides are adequately informative. He was wrong on a couple of museum prices - sometimes by 50%. I'm not sure if they are anticipating fee decrease in 2008 (we were just there last week). There are other guidebooks with color pictures and more detailed descriptions of sights - might also want to have those if you are not going to do a guided or audio tour. His suggestions on side trips to the hill towns were great. We went to Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano and Volterra by car. We are really glad to have had this book. Definitely recommend and will definitely buy Rick Steves books for our future travels.
Very helpful!.......2006-07-03
I spent 9 days this spring in Florence and Tuscany & found this book to be absolutely wonderful--full of great tips to get the most of your trip. Obviously, a lot of other people found him useful too, as everywhere we went, we saw people toting his book around! My German sister-in-law found it comical!
I am so glad that my friend introduced me to Rick Steves! I now own 3 of his books and am actually shopping for a couple more to use in the coming year!

Just what you need.......2007-09-29
I used this book for my recent trip to Venice. You can skip all guided tours offered by agencies in Venice, if you have this book. It is very helpful with historical overviews, but when come for food advices - just browse local restaurants and look for "tourist menue" (around 15-18 euros for 3 dishes, but be sure it doesn't' come with "cover charge" which is extra 2 euros). It is the best deal to get variety of dishes for reasonable prices. Also, visit Realto market for fresh fruits and vegetables, and small stores for ham and cheeses.
I went on day trips to Padova , Vicenza, and Verona. The book was extremely helpful for giving the guidance for day trips. Don't miss to try Recioto wine in Verona.
Extremely helpful for a short trip.......2007-07-23
I use this book for a two day trip to Venice. As I had very little time it really helped me focus on the important sites. Most important were the little hints about when to see the sites. Although Venice was overrun with tourists, I did not find the restaurants or musems to be a problem if I followed the time recommendations. Skip the commercial tours and follow the book recomendations.
Thank you, Ladies on the Train!.......2007-06-25
My husband and I were fortunate enough to be seated across from some ladies who had this book on the train from Florence to Venice. After learning that we had no guidebook for the city, they very kindly gave it to us to use during our stay. We are soooooo grateful! We used it constantly. We loved the way Rick had all the walking tours laid out, and we did several of them. Since we only had two days in the city, we made use of the feature recommending which sites to see and which to skip. Also, I think that if we travel to Italy again, we will skip many of the agency "guided" tours--which mainly consist of being herded like cattle through the museums during peak hours and rushed past some of the most interesting pieces--and opt instead for the self-guided tour features in Rick's guidebook. We took the self-guided for I Frari and St. Mark's, and both were far more informative than our 40 Euro tour of the Doge's Palace. We ate at a number of the recommended restaurants (including the Juice Bar--delicious!) and didn't have any problem with crowds or waits, even during the peak hours of 8-9 pm. Since our hotels were pre-booked through a travel agency, I can't comment on the accomodations section. But I loved that Rick's recommendations were all budget-friendly. By the time we got to Venice, we'd been all across Italy and funds were low. It was nice that this guidebook had actual price ranges inside, so we could budget a little better--and know, unlike another unsuspecting couple we met, that coffee at Florian's could end up costing 50 + Euros. This book would be a great investment for any Venice-bound traveller...and thank you again, ladies! You (and Rick) helped make our trip absolutely fabulous!
Another quality book from Rick.......2007-05-15
Not only does Rick provide up to minute info, including correct phone numbers to musuems. (Just called to secure a reservation to Doge's Secret Tour) but also hints on how to avoid some of the lines. Would you like to know which vaporetta stop to use for Murano glass shopping? Get the book. It well done, with a couple of unexpected lines of humor that will definitely have lol wherever you are!!
Definitely a must-have for Venice visitors........2007-03-26
Rick's book - along with the Eyewitness Travel Guide for Venice and the Veneto - proved to be the most useful from the stack of nearly a half-dozen tour guides we brought with us on a recent trip to the city. His coverage of practical information such as how to best use and get around the city via vaporetto, walking, waterbus services, etc was the easiest to follow and made navigating what can be a confusing city much simpler.
His museum and art highlights are interesting and provide a more lighthearted, easier-to-read approach than many more "highbrow" tour or art books one can find. Of course, there is much more to see in each museum or church or scuola than he points out, so for the art enthusiast it is worth taking your time and not simply skimming about to find his highlights. We found we needed at least twice as much time in each location as Rick indicates to fully appreciate what we were seeing. Similarly, we had to laugh upon setting foot on Burano and seeing he only gives it a "5-minute" walkabout, or similarly 30 minutes on Torcello. We spent about 5 hours combined on just those two fascinating lagoon islands.
That said, we would have missed a great deal without his useful hints and tips, and went to a couple of the restaurants he recommended and had good experiences there (as well as his other tips for good eating around the entire city.)

Customer Reviews:
Don't go to Rome without this book!.......2006-12-05
I just returned from Italy where I used this book practically as a bible while in Rome. Having used other travel books around the world, I really enjoyed and appreciated how Rick Steves organizes his book and provides you with just the right amount of detail and direction to make the most out of your trip.
Only having four days in Rome, his book helped me see the major sites, avoid long lines and make the best of a short trip. I recommend reading the recommended 'tours' the evening before to help you plan your attack. It was great to be able to wander through the Forum, book in hand and hit the highlights while understanding the magnificance of the place.
The way the tours are grouped are fabulous. I really felt like I saw the best that Rome had to offer.
The tips on avoiding lines was invaluable! Take those tips to heart and you'll save many hours of frustration. I used a combination of restaurants I found, plus his recommendations and never had a bad meal.
Truly a great book, now If only I can find a similar book for Asia.
Can't wait to get to Rome!.......2006-08-22
This book will be my BIBLE when traveling to Rome. There are so many good tips and inside information. Having this book will help us plan our trip and make the best of our time and money. Because we're traveling NEXT August, I believe I'll try the 2007 addition too. Thanks Rick Steves!!
Rick Steves' Rome 2006 paperback.......2006-08-10
Great "tips" on how to get the most out of your trip. His style of writing makes you want to read more--very funny! Especially love the small section on Italian phrases. Thanks Rick--now we just have to go to Rome to use it!
Rick Steves is essential.......2006-08-03
Any American contemplating a visit to Rome will be well advised to pick up a copy of this book. Rick not only describes the things to do but lets you know what NOT to do and what to avoid - sage advise for the first-time visitor. He also directs the tourist to out-of-the-way restraints and hotels where one can meet real Romans not just doormen. This book is a must!
Rick Steves Rome .......2006-07-13
Mr. Steves Rome tour guide is, like most of his other books very useful. I always want to know where to stay and have that arranged before I arrive in a city. Rick's useful information helps with that. He has very good ideas for arranging a tour of the city and helps with places to eat.

This book is a hoot. Please be careful....if taken seriously, you could get into a lot of trouble.
JP
very funny !!.......2007-01-11
I really enjoyed this book, I think it is very clever!
Quantity not Quality.... .......2005-08-24
Revenge Encyclopedia, is full of many tips that would cost alot of money to buy in other books. However, other books take the time to explain how not to get caught.
What am I saying... This can be a dangerous book if given to the worng person, AKA someone with no common sense. However if it's quantity not quality you're looking for, these pages have about 1000 ticks and pranks. Some are so cruel I wouldn't use them on my worst enemy. I would suggest for those who want to be more careful to buy George Haydukes books as most of the pranks came from him.
PS... Printed really cheaply.... book is think and large. Not easily concealed. Bad choice for production if you want to conceal this book. It's about the size of a relatively think coloring book. The print is off center, top of the word is ahead of the bottom of the word. I don't feel it was worth the price as for quality but quantity was worth every penny. If only they were less cheap and printed it in a more well rounded way...
Very Practical........1998-06-12
This may be the mother of revenge books. You would have to buy and read more than 25 books to get the wisdom and wit contained in this volume. You'll like it!

1,100 Designs and Motifs from Historic Sources.......2005-08-29
Historically many of these designs were manufactured in the Chicago, Ill. area and were sold by catalog. This is a great collection of many of these commercial designs that were offered only by mail order at one time.
History in Design.......2000-09-08
This source book of 100 pages of design and motifs from around the world is complemented by 23 pages of descriptions of the elements in each of the "plates" which follow. These elements of design are explained, common and historical names for elements may be given, original colours used, origins of the designs included too. This extra detail gives the book its value, enriching the knowledge of the prospective user, rather than just providing a series of pretty pictures to be copied.
A useful classic.......2000-04-13
This is a good sourcebook for classic Renaissance style and some Greek style illustrations. Much of the Renaissance art is Greek inspired. Especially noted are the beautiful, and out of the ordinary depictions of Aphrodite. It is intersting to see the Old Pagan influence in these historically accurate depictions.

Customer Reviews:
No words, just pictures.......2000-06-27
This book is a source for visual designers, architects, and interior decorators. It is a reproduction of the plates of a larger theoretical opus Hessemer published around 1840, collecting interesting mostly geometric designs from Italy and Egypt. This has no text at all after the publishers note explaining this, and a list of the plates and their sources, followed by 120 pages of color plates, many with multiple designs. The reproductions of the old plates have lost something through the generations, and aren't particularly accurate regarding the details being presented. When you actually go to Italy and see these things, the reds will pop your eyes out. Docked a star because it's pretty dull here. A clever people would scan the images and alter the colors both to match their needs and to approach the correct clarity and intensity.
The publisher claims some restrictions on rights to reproduce the designs: "You may use the designs and illustrations for graphics and crafts applications, free and without special permission, provided that you include no more than ten in the same publication or project", and, "reproduction of any illustration by any of the graphic service [...] is prohibited." You'd think anything published in 1840 would be Public Domain by now.
We may use the 4th down on plate 96 (parts of the mosaic bands on the Duomo of Florence) in our entry hall.
