    Book Description

One of the most requested titles in our critically acclaimed Traveler series, this beautiful guide makes the vast enigma of China accessible to every visitor. Continuing the series' winning formula, this new edition combines in-depth, up-to-date descriptions with dazzling photographs, detailed maps, cutaway illustrations of renowned structures, and a wealth of useful travel tips. Organized by cities and areas, the book covers the best sites and attractions throughout the country. Highlights include the capital of Beijing; dynamic Shanghai; the fertile Yangtze region; Guilin and its fabled limestone pillars; the life-size army of terra-cotta warriors in Xi'an; Tibet; the Silk Road; Inner Mongolia; Hong Kong; and Macau—all prefaced by an elaborate introduction to the rich Chinese history and culture.

Wide-ranging sidebars discuss Chinese deities, the Taiping Rebellion, Tibetan Buddhism, and other interesting topics, while guided tours include a bike ride from Tiananmen Square and a cruise along the Yangtze River. An extensive travel planner details practicalities such as where to find the most gracious hotels and the best Peking duck and dim sum.

Veteran travel writer Damian Harper, who has a degree in modern and classical Chinese and an intense interest in Chinese philosophy and poetry, brings authoritative guidance and a strong individual voice to this refreshing new look at a timeless land as it prepares to host the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2010 World Expo.

I haven't had time to read and use the whole book. What I have read and used is very good. I haven't checked out the hotel & restaurant information because I didn't need it. Some of the photos were good for a basis understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Wealth of information.......2007-07-09

I purchased this book based on reviewers' comments. I'm delighted with the book and will use it, in conjunction with Passport Taiwan, to map out our itinerary. I would certainly recommend both books -- and a map of Taiwan -- to anyone considering a trip to that country.

2 out of 5 stars National Geographic Traveler: Taiwan .......2007-06-05

Beyond some nice photography, there's not a whole lot of substance to this guide book. Descriptions are brief and not entirely comprehensive. One positive was the introductory pages that explained the history and culture.

    3 out of 5 stars Awesome Photos!.......2007-03-29

I brought both the Lonely Plant and National Geographic Guide to Taiwan. The Lonely Planet book was great, because the names of places were given in both English and Chinese characters. The Chinese characters are a must for taxi drivers. There are not a lot a pictures, so the National Geographic Guide came in real handy as well. If you are only buying one, the lonely planet guide is esssential.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of good pictures, but often not enough information.......2007-01-12

I bought both the National Geographic Traveler and Lonely Planet guides for Taiwan before working there for a month. While I was there, I found that National Geographic Traveler was more useful for planning places to go and things to do because it uses in depth highlights of tourist spots to visit and has full color photos and drawings throughout. However, I found that the Lonely Planet guide had more information, both useful and not. It had descriptions, hours of operations, and costs for many destinations that both tourists and residents would frequent. It could be described as an insider's guide of what to do in Taiwan, but the quantity of information was more than the quality. Lonely Planet's few color plates were okay, but not as helpful as those found in the National Geographic Traveler. This made the Lonely Planet harder to decide what to do from the many options provided because the choice was usually only based on a couple of sentences. The maps were better in Lonely Planet, but I ended up using a tourist map when I was in Taipei.
I recommend getting both. I found that I would see interesting photos in National Geographic Traveler and then look up the information in Lonely Planet to decide if it was worth doing or not.

4 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook for Taiwan.......2007-01-09

This is hands down the best guidebook on Taiwan that I was able to find. All the pictures in the book were great. Only wish there were more walking tours around the major cities such as Taipei and Taichung. Well worth the money!

2 out of 5 stars Racist, opinionated, and contains little useful travel information.......2007-10-03

I'm a Han Chinese who has traveled extensively in Xinjiang. Lonely Planet is only harming Han-Uyghur relations with their anti-Han Chinese rhetoric and veiled racism. The section on Xinjiang starts off by claiming that Han Chinese are "invaders", then goes on to describe the Beijing government sending "trainloads" and "hordes" of Han Chinese to flood Xinjiang's ethnic makeup. I'm Han Chinese, I am not an invader, I refuse to be described of as human cattle, and I have just as much right to be here as some snotty Western backpacker who thinks he's above it all. The Lonely Planet section on Xinjiang is filled with opinionated, anti Han-Chinese drivel and the little actual travel information that it does provide is woefully outdated and inaccurate. When I buy a travel guidebook, I buy it for pure travel information, not to be "educated" by racist garbage written by self-righteous Westerners who can't even speak Mandarin. For this reason I will not purchase Lonely Planet guidebooks in the future and recommend others not to purchase them either, especially not the China edition. I have heard the Iran edition has similar problems.

    5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet - CHINA.......2007-08-26

Physical condition - Bent cover and first pages - ACCEPTABLE
Contents - We plan a trip to China in November 2007. This
Guide will be an invaluable resource - even though we will
be on a guided tour. We have guests that have lived years in
China and when they saw our copy of "Lonely Planet - CHINA",
they said that "It is absolutely THE BEST."

2 out of 5 stars too big too small.......2007-08-12

the book is too big... China is a big country, there should be a separate book for each region covering it more in depth. Also due to this, the authors have selected a tiny font making it quite hard and unpleasant to read.
The book is also lacking useful hints which I find in the french equivalent "le guide du routard" for french speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Not easy to read for foreigners.......2007-07-13

Comprehensive edition actually, but not so easy to read for the foreigners.
As it is a guide I preffer more "easy english".

    3 out of 5 stars so so.......2007-07-13

For standard tourist attractions its a fine guide book BUT it is no insider guide ............ not even close.
And it is HEAVY!!!!! So think twice; or actually thrice as it is banned in China and if you come across police they might take it away from you!

5 out of 5 stars Dependable quality of narratives and pictures.......2005-10-14

National Geographic Traveler is the best series of its type, and the NGT Thailand book has the same standards of quality as all the others. It provides an excellent mix of written descriptions and beautiful pictures, both of which are helpful in determining whether to include places on your trip itinerary. The only flaw is that the hotel and meal section is not particularly useful.

1 out of 5 stars Glossy and pretty but lacking in substance.......2004-10-28

This book seems to be mostly fluff and pictures. It's all in full color which makes it appealing to the eye, and the pictures and general information about various locations are interesting. However, it's almost useless in planning a trip.

All the hotels and restaurants are listed at the back of the book (separate from the other information about the cities, which in itself is annoying because you have to flip back and forth), and the selection they list seems completely random. For many cities no hotels or restaurants are listed.

National Geographic would do well to cut down on the pretty colors and pictures and expand the actual information provided in this book. As it is now, it is a waste of money. Buy the Lonely Planet guide if you want practical information that will actually help you to plan and enjoy a trip to Thailand.

1 out of 5 stars What an absolute waste of money.......2002-09-08

Buy it for the pictures only. The organization and quality of information in this guidebook is terrible.

The worst travel book I've ever purchased.

        5 out of 5 stars A picture is worth 1000 words.......2001-06-03

The National Geographic Traveler travel guide for Thailand is a bit pricey for travel books of this type, but it is well worth the investment. Unlike most travel guides, this one is rich in beautiful photography. The book offers a wealth of information on the history and culture of the country, and it gives detailed information about each tourist site. The section covering hotel accomodations and restaurants is adequate, but there are other travel guides that do a better job in these departments. However, the great number and high quality of the photographs compensate for other shortcomings and tempt you to see it all for yourself.

              Book Description

Rod Farb, a PADI divemaster with decades of diving experience, has led innumerable dive trips to the wrecks off the North Carolina Coast. Shipwrecks is the chronicle of his underwater adventures diving the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Now, this acknowledged classic is in its second edition, with over 100 new pages of additional information. Farb's accounts of eight new wreck dives have been added, along with an extensive description of the expedition dive of the great Civil War ship the U.S.S. Monitor. Divers and historians will find this completely revised and updated second edition, with almost 80 near shore and offshore wreck sites, to be the best volume on shipwrecks in the regions. This edition of Shipwrecks features: A comprehensive overview of each wreck, instructions for diving from both a boat and the beach, vivid descriptions of Rod Farb's underwater adventures, masterful underwater photographs and illustrations as well as appendixes with information about underwater photography, charter dive services, the divers alert network, and state and federal statutes governing underwater salvage.

5 out of 5 stars This should be standard equipment to dive NC!.......2004-01-22

I've had this book since it was released in 1991. I actually met Rod Farb at a NC Diving Event. I live in NC and do a fair amount of diving off the coast and always, always, always take this book with me.

Rod's knowledge and experience is evident in every page. The author gives a brief history of each wreck, exact coordinates to locate the wreck, how the wreck rests at the bottom, and unique facts about the resting site. The book also include dive charters all over the Carolina's and a great resource guide.

When I say brief history, I mean to the point and concise but the author tells you interesting facts, such as, what company built the ship, other names the ship had, how it came to rest in the graveyard of the Atlantic. In some of the shipwrecks he retells accounts of the crew and their rescue or demise.

Each wreck listed has everything you need to know to plan your day of diving and develope a safe fun dive plan. From depth of the water the wreck is resting in, to the artifacts you can discover in the sand, and if you can retrieve anything from the wreck. He even shows diagrams and pictures of the layout of the wreck on the bottom of the ocean.

This is a facinating book if your interested in shipwrecks of all kinds and a must have if you are an avid scuba diver off the coast of NC. All sorts of wrecks are contained in the pages of this book from the purposely sunk for artifical reefs, to the casualties of storms, and the fatalities of War.

              See you on the bottom!

3 out of 5 stars Good wreck histories and descriptions.......2001-10-10

Having lived on the Outer Banks growing up, but not getting into diving until recent years, I was suprised at the extent of the wrecks off the North Carolina Coast, and the WWII historical perspective. On the positive side, this book presents an extensive history of many of the wrecks, depths, temperatures, and dive charters operating to the wrecks. On the negative side, I was expecting more gear and equipment recommendations, and explanation of techniques used on the wrecks, but didn't find it.

5 out of 5 stars "THE" book for the beginning and experienced wreck diver!.......2001-04-11

Extremely well written and packed with lots of useful information. My only regret is that I did not have this book before I went on my first wreck dive. Book goes into detail on wrecks up and down the NC coast - a must for anyone with an interest in diving the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Not only are wrecks given a full review, but also charter companies with boat specs and strengths and weaknesses of each charter. You cannot call yourself a serious wreck diver without this wreck bible.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best references for the Atlantic diving community.......1999-02-12

Mr. Farb has imparted an impressive degree of research and personal diving experience in this second edition to his original 1985 work. The reader will find comprehensive histories of each wreck featured, detailed maps of the wrecks as they presently exist, and useful advice on how to dive each wreck. Even sport fishermen will find this work useful, as each wreck description contains useful information on what species inhabits the area. Experienced divers and recreational fishermen are yearning for a 3rd edition, however, since time and weather have impacted many of these wrecks and some mysteries have been solved, such as the location of the "Ario" wreck, while new mysteries have been uncovered (are the Papoose and Hutton wrecks reversed?). Additionally, each wreck description should include precise GPS or Loran coordinates to assist first time visitors to the wreck sites. Many locations in the 2nd edition, when provided, are often inadequate for the reader to find the wrecks.

              5 out of 5 stars A must-get book for wreck divers.......1996-05-18

Rod Farb has long been known as one of the experts on finding and exploring shipwrecks. This book passes some of his knowledge onto the rest of the diving community, as well as to anybody interested in maritime history. Farb has obviously done an excellent job of researching his material. 'Shipwrecks' doesn't just contain a list of wreck descriptions, as other similar books do. In addition, Farb has written some narrative about the history of each ship that gives the reader a feel for the vessel itself.
