Book sent to be reviewed for libraries..........2007-04-17
Ok, this is a fun book for children, since young people are always interested in what is going on. However, if we don't take care of these habitats for foxes and raccoons, these creatures are going to search for other places to live including moving into areas closer to humans and their urban develpments.
This book is simple to read and actually does a pretty good job explaining the science beind the simple experiments. This is a good source to go to for basics. I've used it for basic concepts and demonstations in hearing and deaf universities. Also demonstrates a fairly good way to understanding how to do the 'scientic methods,' something that is not taught very well at school or at home all the time or even in the labs all the time.
(the first time I wrote this book review I must have been half asleep because I definitely did an awful job of it!)

Digging in the depths of time.......2004-10-26
In the quest for learning about our ancient ancestors, placing artefacts in their original context is essential. It's not enough to locate fossil bones or stone chips as once we did. Now, where those people lived, what they ate, what environmental conditions they enjoyed, plus a multitude of other factors must be integrated to build a realistic picture of their life. Not many years ago we could only guess many of these elements. Fagan explains how today's technologies have taken us far beyond the capabilities of the shovel and brush in revealing details of our ancestors' lives.
In this series of accounts, we accompany Fagan on his visits to various archaeological sites. There, he explains what led to the original find, how it was excavated and what processes were involved in explaining the artefacts. There are many tools available to the field researcher today. Most of them are of recent origin and refinements in the future will improve accuracy. Among the most important of the new technologies is, of course, dating techniques. Fossils seem almost capricious in their location. They may be resting where they fell, or earth's many forces may have carried them about. Streams, tides, scavengers, simple burial practices may place remains in a misleading site. Radiometric dating methods, the decay of an element into another, has proven the most reliable of determining the age of a find. The method applies equally to recent skeletal artefacts or evidence from surrounding environment. Seeds, charcoal from firewood, even the long-dead husks of insects may offer clues to age and local conditions.
The various technologies have widened the spectrum of expertise drawn to archaeological sites. More than simply placing human fossils in a local context, larger patterns are derived from the evidence. Pollen samples demonstrate whether the ancient inhabitants lived in open plain, scattered woodland or congested forest. Dung beetles suggest domestic cattle, while other species may suggest thatched houses or stored grain. Each type of investigation requires a specialist, and one versed in recognising changing conditions as well as static, long-term patterns. Human uses of wood are many and varied, and the counting of tree rings becomes an important element in both dating and environmental clues.
Fagan's personal touch gives what might be a dreary account a vibrant life. We slog through damp, muddy bogs in Britain with Francis Pryor, sort through Euphrates valley plant seeds with Gordon Hillman, and reflect on Egyptian wine vintages from Pharonic times. It's not all dry, dusty or boggy antiquity Fagan relates. In Peru, there proves to be modern application for ancient wisdom. In the Andean hills, he shows how archaeology can become an applied science. Techniques for saving water, keeping root crops frost-resistant and utilising soil resources to the fullest that were used by the ancient Incas are now being applied by local farmers. The Altiplano region, long thought to be too desolate or subject to capricious weather, is now estimated to support up to 1.5 million people using these methods. The region's populace understands how conditions vary, and have established mutually supportive communities to extend the practices and provide support in stressful times. Centralised rule from the capital proved flawed, and the regional communities developed their own system. It's a fine object lesson for others. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
This is a brief overview of Time Detectives.......1998-08-06
Time Detectives is a book about archeology and modern technology. This book describes archeological surveys in North and South America, Africa, and Europe. The most interesting aspect of this book is the methods of archeological research. It is very technical in describing various methods from piecing bone fragments together to radio-carbon dating processes.
In reading this book, one learns that modern archeology is primarily conducted in a lab. The artifacts being transported from the field into various labs in the Americas and Europe. For example, David Cohen excavated a site where a group of hunters and foragers camped in a sandy clearing near Meer in Northern Belgium. He found an area near the site where there were small flint fragments. The pieces were fitted together, and the discovery that there were two persons chipping away on a bit of cobble emerged. The more amazing discovery was that one was right handed, and the other was left handed emerged as th! e chips fit back together.
Another interesting aspect covered in this book is underwater archeology. The various techniques in preserving artifacts are discussed in technical detail. The hardships the divers endure are also discussed. The care of getting preserved artifacts from the ocean floor to the surface without damage is tremendous.
Overall, this book is very challenging reading. The reader discovers that archeology as a science is useful when considering such things as air pollution, simple mechanical discoveries, and survival of the human race. The technical aspects of this book are probably over the heads of my age group (16-18), but it is still interesting reading.

No Indiana Jones here, or is there?.......1997-06-14
The book is composed of a series of articles about how archeology has evolved from its romantic (and mostly careless) beginnings to a more thorough and precise science. How we have shifted our interest from just dazzling treasures to seeds and excrements. Most importantly, it informs the reader about the thrill that is derived with our methods of today from insignificant pieces of pollen or rotten wood and how this pieces give us a broader picture into the past than the mere recollection of statues and hidden treasures.
So if you are in for the adventure of real science, dive right in. If you expect an Indiana Jones type book, you might find it also but you'll have to look a little harder.
Book Description
Slaughtering elephants for their ivory; shooting bears for their gall bladders; capturing sea turtles for soup. In the name of vanity, fashion, and greed, man stalks and kills wild animals -- and gets away with it, even when it is clearly against the law. But now scientists have a way to catch and convict poachers. In a laboratory in Ashland, Oregon, they analyze clues to link suspects to crimes. In words and pictures, this book tells a poignant story and reveals how science can indeed save the day.

Customer Reviews:
Not so helpful.......2005-08-24
I was disappointed with this book. After reading many positive reviews I decided to buy it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. First, it is not up to date. Several museums (most importantly the Children's Museum) either did not exist any more or were under renovation. Make sure to check individual attractions before relying on the book's info. Second, what I thought was missing was information about parking availability for each attraction. If you are driving, this is something you defintitely need to check. Third, information regarding restrooms and/or changing rooms would have been helpful since this is a book for families and young children. For example, there was no restroom in close vicinity to the Washington Monument and this would have been helpful to know. Finally, a map would have also been useful in order to plan an outing for the day. Although the book provides information regarding the closest Metro stop, it is difficult to map out a plan for getting from one place to another.
Just the facts, kids!.......2004-04-23
I was skeptical when I first saw this book. After all, it's pretty small. Yet on a recent family trip to DC, I used it more than the two others I bought. No hotel reviews, no Metro maps, this book simply tells you about 68 child-friendly spots to hit--one spot per page. I particularly liked the sidebars that clued you on places to eat near the attractions, like the inexpensive US Department of Agriculture cafeteria across the street from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the fun facts. One omission, however, The International Spy Museum!
This is an okay pocket book.......2003-05-20
The book was just okay. Not much detail on the acctrations. I ordered it with Washington, D.C. with Kids 2002-2003. I used Around Washingtion with Kids as a guide and read more detailed information in Washington, D.C with Kids. The good thing is that is is small enough to throw in my backpack and bring along during my tour.
You'll Use it Over and Over Again.......2001-10-11
I purchased this for my Mother when she moved to the D.C. area so she'd have ideas of where to take the grandkids. Everytime we're there I see it out on a counter or on the nightstand. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins have all used to it while visiting. It's a great gift and a great reference. We've definitely gotten our money's worth!
Low-cost family fun!.......2000-07-14
What a help in planning low-cost, fun outings for our family! DC offers such great opportunities, but sometimes it seems too hard to organize a day together. This book helps enormously, with age suggestions for each activity, parking/public transportation information, and tips about all important food and bathroom locations. A must-have to make the most of the wonderful resources in our Nation's Capital!

Excellent Resource for Families.......2006-03-15
It's clearly written, very informative, and enjoyable to read besides. I learned a lot from this book. I learned there are many more things to see and do in Washington than I knew. It's an invaluable planning aid, since I now know which sites will bore our son and which he will enjoy. The book also gives ideas on how children can have educational fun in our capital, tips on getting around, and more.

A "must have" for anyone visiting Washingon, D.C........2004-02-08
Washington, D.C. is the most unique city in the world. Whether you are visiting the area or live there, one cannot possibly know the wealth of information found in Washington, D.C. with Kids. I grew up in the area, but I have lived away for more than twenty years. Without this guide, I would have difficutly finding the places I want to see when I am back. I wish there had been such a book when my kids were younger. It's always such a challenge finding entertaining and worthwhile activities when on family trips. Imagine showing up in a city and having a resource that gives you a map, a subway map, addresses of places, times of operation, and even suggestions for meals! This book even indicates which venues are appropriate for various age groups. All of that and more is found in this superb volume. It's a "must have" for anyone planning a visit to Washington, D.C.
A Most Helpful Guide.......2004-01-18
I found this book easy to read, full of useful and fun information. I have recommended to friends that do not have children and are planning a trip to the nation's capitol.
The information is interesting and concise. The book is well-written and includes many interesting and little known bits of information, as well as the more typical tourist spots.
Washington With Worth.......2004-01-14
This book makes seeing Washington so easy and painless. The sights are grouped according to location, so you know what you can see together in a short amount of time. I discovered gems in Washington that I never knew existed! And just when the kids are getting cranky and hungry, there is a list of good places to eat. The directions by metro are very helpful and well done. I highly recommend this book to natives and visitors alike!

A sober warning of the dangers of UFO contact........2005-11-26
Now retired from the UFO scene, Jacques Vallee was one of the most sober, perceptive, and scientifically astute observers of the phenomenon. "Confrontations" is the second volume of his great trilogy ("Dimensions" and "Revelations" are the other two) which summed up his 40-odd years of research.
As the title suggests, this book focuses on the dangers - physical, psychological, and even spiritual - of contact (intentional or otherwise) between human beings and the energy forms known as UFOs. I say "energy forms" because Vallee discounts the idea that UFOs are spaceships from other planets or other galaxies. Instead, he sees them as "multidimenional entities" - a form of paranormal energy, indeed a non-human intelligence - that has in varying forms interacted with human beings throughout recorded history.
Drawing on his personal files, including numerous black-and-white photos, Vallee describes the debilitating effects that often result from too-close contact - sought or unsought - with the UFO phenomenon. From California to Brazil, we follow Vallee as he interviews the victims of contact and lets them tell their stories.
And they are indeed victims. Vallee's subjects have met neither the benign "space brothers" of the 1950s contactees nor - for the most part - the reptilian, bug-eyed abductors of the 1990s. But they have interacted with powerful, disorienting energies, energies capable of producing harmful mental and physical effects, up to and including death. They have been touched by the paranormal, and most are worse of because of it.
Often reading like a detective story, this book puts you on the ground with a brave and humane chronicler of the unknown. It is a moving book, one of the best ever in its field. If you are new to the topic of UFOs, you could not do better than read Vallee's great trilogy, beginning with "Dimensions," then "Confrontations," then "Revelations." In doing so, you will have gotten to the heart of the phenomenon and spared yourself a lot of nonsense.
A wake up call.......2005-04-30
"Confrontations" needs to be read by anyone seriously interested in the subject of UFOs, as -- of the literally thousands of books on the subject in circulation -- there is only a mere handful that have anything meaningful to say. Most books on the subject seemed directed at those with a near infantile mentality -- they insult the reader's intelligence, attempt to sensationalize the subject, and present speculation and falsehoods as fact. "Confrontations" not only presents the subject in a sober, sane, and scientific manner, but it is groundbreaking in it's unique methodology. First, Vallee purports that the UFOs are most likely NOT of extraterrestrial origin, but are most likely "multidimensional". Next, he states that they are not "visitors", but instead seem to have been with us since before recorded History, and indeed, may very well predate mankind. He goes on to show numerous examples of how the government, the media, academia, and the "scientific establishment" all seem to show a pattern of working together to discredit anyone who attempts to study the subject or present their research for review -- this phenomenon is well documented and appears to be widespread throughout the United States, whereas in Europe, Asia, and South America it is treated far more seriously. Conversely, fools who promote "ufology" are encouraged to present their narrow-minded fluff on every available medium for cheap entertainment value -- this serves to further discourage and discredit serious researchers. Finally, Vallee makes the important point that not only do the entities associated with UFOs show a pattern of being deceptive, but they can actually be malicious as well -- and frequently are. No "space brothers" hoping to "illuminate and advance" mankind here! His conclusion? Nobody knows exactly what is going on -- in fact, it is possible that the human mind may not even be capable of fathoming the true nature of this phenomenon -- but something is definitely happening, and everyone knows it, but for some reason the subject is being ridiculed rather than studied. A definitive book -- read it!
Very objective perspective.......2004-11-22
This book is a one of a kind. Vallee does not seem concerned with public opinion of his methods. He has had the most detailed, 1st hand knowledge of UFOs of anyone in the world and provides his assessment of what he has seen.
He discusses little known aspects of the UFO witness experience, such as numerous fatalities, severe beatings by invisible assailants long after the sighting, and other obscure data. He takes the UFO expreience out of the realm of science fiction and restores it to the unknown mystery that it truly is. His belief that these things are not from "outer space" is displayed with outstanding explanation.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in UFOs. It has a no nonsense view and is illustrated by ironclad data from the leader of UFO investigators.
Thought-provoking look at UFO research.......1999-05-20
Jacques Vallee has produced another thought-provoking book on the U.F.O. phenomena. This is the second book of his "Alien trilogy", and it focuses on research methodology. He is especially concerned about the lax methods being used to investigate claims of UFO encounters, where few investigators bother to visit the actual site or interview the witnesses firsthand.
Mr. Vallee again questions the extraterrestrial hypothesis, and takes fellow ufologists to task for only listing or collecting evidence that supports their hypothesis. He is especially concerned about the use of hypnosis in "abduction" cases, where the hypnotist may be leading the abductee to report activities that easily fall into the extraterrestrial survey camp.
Mr. Vallee offers no conclusive proof or definitive answers, just data and information for the reader to peruse and decide for themselves. This book is a wake-up call to ufologists to strengthen their research methods, and improve the current state of ufology. Perhaps, they should even re-think the questions being asked.
While I may not personally agree with all of Mr. Vallee's opinions, I think that he presents a very needed voice of caution and reason in a field fraught with high emotions. This book would make a terrific text for a class on studying paranormal phenomenon, or gather witness reports.
