Thorough.......2007-09-09
This is not intended to be a comprehensive, indepth encyclopedia. BUt as a basic primer on Rhodesian Ridgebacks, it covers all of the key highlights and provides a firm foundation for understanding this wonderful breed.
Intelligently written, well-illustrated, well-organized, easy to navigate, with an index and bibliography.
I highly recommend it.
$8. 95 pp., Good binding and glossy paper.
great book.......2007-04-11
This book is very beneficial for any one that owns, wants to own,or simply is fancinated by Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are great dogs, and this book is a great resource for the money.
Basic.......2007-01-11
I was expecting this book to be more informative. More of a coffee-table book in style of information.
New owner's perspective.......2005-09-11
This book was very enlightening to a new potential Ridgeback owner (me), and it helps new/potential owners decide if this breed is right for you. If you get this breed, you MUST be prepared as they are very smart. They remember everything (good and bad), and this book really represents their mentality. It also gives good tips for positive training.
Sue knows her Ridgebacks!.......2005-08-24
Having been owned by a ridgeback for over 7 years, Ms. Fox was right on with her "complete pet owner's manual." I especially enjoyed the humor she used when discussing the imperative need for early training. I have always had dogs, but this is my first hound and I will always have a ridgeback. Though definately not a dog for everyone, this book educates the owner or potential owner on the cons and many pros of living with this wonderful breed.
Book Description
The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston includes Sherston's Progress and both Memoirs.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic!.......2003-02-17
Sassoon's three volumes wrapped up into one take the reader into another world. First volume describes life in the English country, where a young George Sherston becomes completely immersed in fox hunting. To say he becomes consumed by this is an understatement. Sassoon's intimate depictions of the countryside, to include the life of a country gentleman are so detailed you can clearly "see" and feel how young George felt.
Volume 2, Memoirs of an infantry officer take George into the trenches of France, where again with graphic details, the horror and calamity of the fighting in WWI are brought to our attention. Of note is the latter part of the volume where Sherston's morals are challenged, and how he deals with this mental dilemma.
Volume 3 takes Sherston from the trenches of France, to a stint in Ireland and Palestine, but ultimately back to France where the novel is brilliantly wrapped up.
Sassoon's experiences in the war have given us perhaps one of the greatest novels from the era. The writing is absolutely outstanding and will give you pause to put the book down.
One of the great books about World War I........2001-10-17
World War I had a far greater impact on Britain than the US for the obvious reasons that they were in the war for over four years and suffered horrific casualties. The literature produced by that war made a sharp break from what came before, which reflected the feeling in the country that the war had irrevocably changed life in Britain. This is well illustrated in Siegfreid Sassoon's "The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston," a fictional version of his own experiences. The first part covers Sherston's pre-war life, with his obsession with fox-hunting. This is so well written that you will enjoy it even if you don't have the least interest in the subject.
The next section, "Memoirs of an Infantry Officer" covers his experiences in World War I, during he is highly decorated. The horrors of the war, which many of Sassoon's class thought would be a great adventure, are accurately portrayed. Eventually he becomes disillusioned with the war, and writes a letter denouncing it that could have led to his court-martial. A close friend (Robert Graves in real life) gets him classified as having a mental disorder and he is sent off to a hospital to recuperate.
This book is deeply moving and is one of a handful of books that changed the way that the English-speaking world views war. Sassoon's writing style is plain on the surface, but its plainness makes the emotional impact all the greater.
A true classic.......2000-05-07
I had heard of this book many years before I was tempted to read it, and now I truly regret my lack of interest in Sassoon up to this point. He is a great poet, but as a memoirist he absolutely sparkles. Robert Graves' book, "Goodbye to all that", often described as a classic, is a mere string of unrelated anecdotes compared with Sassoon's modest, humorous, poignant account of his own youth, which takes us from his childhood in Kent to the end of his military career after the First World War. Don't hesitate to read this book, especially if you enjoy seeing the English language used at its very best.
The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston.......2000-03-12
I find this book completely compelling, particularly volume 2 (Memoirs of and Infantry Officer). The descriptions of degradation experienced by those who fought in the trenches and their ability to create a sub-culture of derring-do is powerful in its modesty.Sassoon's mounting frustration is skilfully portrayed, especially in his allusion to details about provision for and management of warfare. His ennui is almost palpable on those train journies across France.
The first volume (Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man) is possibly of more interest to those of us born and raised in the parish where Sasson himself lived. I enjoyed playing 'spot-the-location', but must declare that I am in possession of a comprehensive list, produced by Brenchley History Society,of pseudonyms/real names.
The writing in this volume has some of the lyrical quality of his autobiography (The Old Century and Seven More Years - out of print)on which it is based. Rather than a treaties on Hunting, I consider this to be a gentle study of the awakening of Sassoon's poetic sensibilities; the Hunt and the relationships he formed with particular characters was, for him, an early catharsis. They also augur the events and characters in the following volume.
The final volume (Sherston's Progress)is probably most poignant if one is aware that this is, indeed, a thinly veiled autobiography. Sassoon's heroism is, for me, as great beyond the era of World War I as it is within it. This volume should certainly be read within the context of the previous two, but stands alone as a testament to the debt future generations owe to the perseverance of men such as Sassoon.
What's Wrong With Foxhunting?.......1999-12-09
A rhetorical question. I've looked for these memoirs off and on in used book shops for years, chiefly because I remembered the first, foxhunting volume so fondly. I don't agree at all with the other reviewers that this section of the "memoirs" is dull. If you like animals or learning about lost sports and conventions--alpine climbing when it was a club activity, say, or round-the-world sailing--you'll enjoy Sassoon's description of hunts and hunters, especially those of the equine sort.

for citrus growers.......2007-01-27
a very useful and short guide for citrus amateurs growers. Very imortant and good information about citrus USDA zones and many citrus varietes carefully described. I think there is a essentail book for amateur citrus growers in temperate zones (atlantic europe coast)
Nice Guide for the Novice.......2007-01-10
The nursery where I bought my citrus tress recommended this book. I think it provides a very comprehensive coverage of growing citrus in AZ. This is a must for your reference library.
Great pictures, but could have been better.......2004-07-18
The book is attractive and does contain a lot of information about different citrus varieties. My main criticism is that the Planting and Care section could have been much more substantial. Specifically, since the descriptions of various citrus ailments (poor nutrition, inappropriate watering, infection with pests) are not accompanied by photos of the symptoms, it makes it harder for the reader to figure out what these problems might actually look like. The black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings of pests are somewhat informative, but they're very limited compared to what might be conveyed by a photo.
Also, a few diagrams to help illustrate "good pruning" would have been great.
I'm not suggesting that this book should have been a definitive technical treatise on citrus, but I think it would have been more useful if more attention had been paid to what goes wrong when you're trying to grow citrus.
subtropical fruit for third world country's information.......2001-12-20
This book has informatiom for the professional as well as the village farmer in Africa , its teachings are simple and clear for all those interested in the subject to follow , the illustrations and instructions are simple even for those with a basic knowledge of subtropical fruit growing. Africa is not covered in the distribution map never the less the fruits are for example the mango tree is synonymous with Africa , it gives food, and shelter from the elements and fuel what more can you want from a tree. Every African school would benefit from a book like this , and i know one that will.
Great citrus guide with wonderful pix/info.......2001-10-10
I have read several other books on citrus cultivation, but this book is by far the best i've run across. It has excellent photographs of the hundreds of citrus fruits, both on the tree and of the inside of the fruit itself. It has some great citrus recipes, but it mainly focuses on the cultivation and care of each variety. This book tells the grower what he/she can exactly expect to see, and how to best care for your tree. If there is ANYTHING this book lacks, it is more info on out-of-zone citrus gardening. For example, i live in NC and i have phenomenal success with all my trees in containers (i winter them in a "cheap" plastic greenhouse). That is my only criticism of this book---otherwise, all cultivar info is detailed and well illustrated!!!!

Extremely Helpful.......2006-11-06
This book tells you everything you nned to know about Weims'. We have owned Weims before but needed a refresher on the puppy training. I found all that was said to be very accurate. The information was complete and easy to apply.
A Good Base Knowledge.......2006-03-09
After owning Weimaraners for several years, I decided to see what was out there that was being said about them. This book is a general good base knowledge of the breed. I think that it does encapsulate the disposition of a Weimaraner. However, it appears to focus on all the hard stuff and none of the satisfaction points from owning a dog of this breed. It is a good book for someone who has already gotten a pup or dog, but if you are looking for knowledge prior to purchase, it might scare you away.
My Weimaraner Thanks Me for Reading this Great Book!.......2005-03-01
If you're reading this review and have a Weimaraner, we already have something in common-that very special bond with a very special and unique breed of dog that really stands out from the crowd.
My life changed when I got my beautiful and loving dog, Savannah. While I was waiting for her to be old enough to pick up from the breeder, I purchased "Weimaraners: Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding and Health Care", written by Susan Fox. I had a Weimaraner, several years ago, but she was a senior Weimer and at 9 years of age I was pretty sure I wasn't going to change too many of her habits. I took her from a shelter and we share a beautiful and exciting life together until she passed away.
I wanted to do everything right and I found all of the answers to my questions when I read this book. It really IS a "Complete Pet Owner's Manual" and I suggest that all Weimaraner parents purchase this or check it out from your local library.
It's filled with eveything from what to feed them, to how to successfully exercise them, to housing them properly, breeding and much, much more. Susan Fox deserves a great deal of credit for writing a manual that has been a sort of "Weimaraner Bible" for me. And my life with Savannah is going just fantastic. I owe a great deal of credit to the book and to Savannah.
It's a really good read for Weimaraner lovers. You'll relate to so much and there is plenty of information in there for everyone! It's organized well and the index makes sense and will direct you to the precise area you're looking for.
Happy Reading and Happy Raising of your Weimaraner. It's a great experience.
Thanks..

Worth the Money.......2002-06-29
If you are looking to get a Weimaraner, this is a must have.
It has great information on what to expect from your dog, how to choose from the litter, Understanding your Weimaraner, Care of, and tips on house-training.
It also has great photos. Recommended !!
Extremely Informative.......2001-01-22
This book has not only information you would expect in any dog book but also provides information specific to the traits of a Weimaraner. The chapter, "Understanding Your Weimaraner," sets the tone for the rest of the book. These dogs need special people who will take the time to understand them. The chapter, "Sharing Your Life With a Weimaraner," provided numerous suggestions for harnessing the fantastic energy and love of this breed. In between, I learned a lot about Weimaraners. All in all, I would suggest this book for anyone who is interested in acquiring a Weimaraner or for anyone who already has one and wants to know more about the breed.

Customer Reviews:
Napoleon wins another.......2007-05-16
Very funny. Great reminder of the highlights in the movie. I bought this for my wife as she is a fan of the movie, and she read it cover to cover and laughed loud and often.
If you love the movie, you'll love this.......2006-11-28
I really enjoyed this book. I originally said it was for my 10 year old son, but let's be honest, it was really for me. This is one of the funniest movies ever and now all the great quotes are right here in 1 book.
Sweet.......2006-08-25
I didn't give a flip about this movie until my son introduced it to me. As a former ethics teacher at a small college, the film struck me as pure genius for its abiltiy to capture the moral milieu of the high school experience, likely as it should be without guns and gangs. My daughters really liked the movie too so I decided to buy this book for them. Taken for what it is, it is a lot of fun and worth the sweet moula you have to spend. We laughed and had a good time going through it together. I recommend it as a stocking stuffer for your teens.
Wasteful, unnecessary........2006-03-22
As if obnoxious teenagers need more incentive to quote an inane and rather dull movie. The quotebook is not worth the money, simply put. There's nothing within that one cannot find by simply renting the movie or even looking it up on the Incredible Edible Internet (hint: head towards www.imdb.com). Before you buy this, stop for a moment and think to yourself: is this something I really need? Of course sometimes you just WANT, but if you already own the movie, or you have access to a library or computer, there's really no point in you wasting your hard-earned money on something so... Well. Pointless.
It's not particularly expensive, but there are plenty better products on which you can spend your 8 bucks.
A little redundant but great to have laying around.......2005-12-03
The book is redundant in that it is a book of quotes from, yes, the movie with the same name. And probably most people who are interested in the book will own the movie. Or will have seen it so many times that they can already quote it. I like the book, though. It's funny, everyone gets a kick out of it, and you just can't get enough of Napolean.

Hermit Crabs owners manual.......2006-11-22
I found the book to be extremely informative and helpful.
there was a great deal of information that i found very useful. Very pleased with this product.
Great Crabby Book.......2006-02-20
With there not being out the in pet stores on how to care for your hermies, this book is very helpful for the novice owner or even for a brush up for someone more experienced. I like to try and read as much as I can. It explains the background of the species as well as how to care for them properly. Thru that, it shows that they are NOT just a disposable pet to live in a little plastic container w/ a 1/4 inch of sand :-( hopefully someday that philosophy will change. They are so interesting and can live a very long time if taken care of properly. It is only a lot of work if you do not have the time.
Very Informative Book on Hermit Crab Care.......2005-09-21
This book has everything that the novice hermit crab owner needs to know to take care of and enjoy their hermit crabs! Information on food, water, environment and behavior can be found easily. This book really helped us learn about our new pets!
AWESOME GUIDE.......2004-01-03
I bought this book and WOW, it totally helped me take care of my hermit crab Sidney. It tells you all that you need to know to let your hermit crab live safely and happily ever after!
Great Book!.......2003-05-18
For your first hermit crab's health and happiness, you need to get this book!
It's filled with all of the basics you need to properly care for your new pet, plus little bonuses about their history and hermies in the wild!

Pretty Good.......2003-04-03
Nice pictures with good information. Found better and more concise books however.
A complete suprise!.......2001-12-07
First and formost, if you are thinking of getting a Wire Fox, (or as my family call them, "Frankie dog's" -thats the name of our litte terroir) get one. They are the sweetest things on earth, and deffinatly the cutest also. Now for the book, talk about quality! We have had our book for about 6 years, and none of the pages are even ripped. The book gives detailed history of the breed, tips on feeding them, grooming them, and taking care of them. One time we wanted our groomer to cut Frankie a certain way, so we brought in the book and showed the groomer, she was so amazed and wanted to buy it off us! I have never had such a complete and thorough book that has beauty at the same time. Sometimes my mom and I will think that Frankies ears are in a weird position, or his stance is irregular, we just look in the book and sure enough, he's fine :) *****Overall~~~~ Great buy!
A Beautiful Book.......2000-11-05
The photos in this book will make you fall in love with the breed!
Finally - a Hand Book for the New WFT Owner.......2000-04-05
I was glad to finally find a reliable handbook on the WFT. This book did provide good information for any new puppy owner focusing on certain aspects of the WFT. The chapters on grooming and training were very beneficial. Although I felt a little overwhelmed with the history chapter it was interesting. The pictures throughout the book are beautiful. Since I have not been able to find any other books on the Wire Fox Terrier I would recommend this one to others.

You have to see a fox terrier to believe how amazing they are!.......2006-07-08
Save your money and do a Google search on fox terriers or actually visit a breeder and see many different fox terriers to get a true sense of their personality. There is no way a book can adequately capture the essence of these unique and spunky dogs.
Excellent.......2003-04-03
If you are going to buy one fox terrier book make it this one.
Simple and concise with pertinent information.
The Good Doctor Tells All.......2002-04-12
With FOX TERRIERS, Dr. Vanderlip has given us a very informative, interesting, and delightful look at our beloved little "square dog". Her knowledge of the breed and animal care, and her love of dogs, shines through in each chapter.
This book will be easily understood and enjoyed by everyone who reads it, as she personalizes the little terriers she speaks about, with their own names, - "Anna" and "Willie".
Throughly covering all aspects of living with and caring for a Fox Terrier from puppyhood to old age, it is expertly written and packed with beautiful full-color photos of both Smooth and Wirehaired representatives of the breed.
It will be hard to find another book on the Fox Terrier that defines this breed's character so precisely. I can attest to this, as I belong to 5 Smooth girls.
