Book Description
Ecologists have always believed, at least to a certain extent, that physiological mechanisms serve to underpin ecological patterns. However, their importance has traditionally been at best underestimated and at worst ignored, with physiological variation being dismissed as either an irrelevance or else as random noise/error. Spicer and Gaston make a convincing argument that the precise physiology does matter! In contrast to previous works which have attempted to integrate ecology and physiology, Physiological Diversity adopts a completely different, and more controversial, approach in tackling the physiology first before moving on to consider the implications for ecology. This is timely given the recent and considerable interest in the mechanisms underlying ecological patterns. Indeed, many of these mechanisms are physiological. This textbook provides a contemporary summary of physiological diversity as it occurs at different hierarchical levels (individual, population, species etc.), and the implications of such diversity for ecology and, by implication, evolution. It reviews what is known of physiological diversity and in doing so exposes the reader to all the key works in the field. It also portrays many of these studies in a completely new light, thereby serving as an agenda for, and impetus to, the future study of physiological variation.Physiological Diversity will be of relevance to senior undergraduates, postgraduates and professional researchers in the fields of ecology, ecological physiology, ecotoxicology, environmental biology and conservation. The book spans both terrestrial and marine systems.

Book Description
For decades, researchers have been interested in the structure, function and inhabitants of forest canopies, but unfortunately, a large portion of this fascinating ecosystem was inaccessible. Recently, with the use of balloons, dirigibles, cranes, towers, suspended catwalks, and a variety of modern climbing equipment, scientists have begun to penetrate this dense foliage, allowing for a detailed, authoritative account of this enchanting world.
Forest Canopies synthesizes the newly compiled data on canopy-dwelling organisms, including insects and other arthropods, lizards, birds, mammals, and, of course, the plants that both form and inhabit this unique aerial ecosystem.
Key Features
* Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
* First synthesis of research into this previously unchartered forest region
* Details innovative techniques for the study of the canopy
* Describes the structure, function, and biodiversity of canopy ecosystems
* Ideal reading for botanists, naturalists, ecologists, and zoologists, or anyone interested in preserving the beauty of these great forests
Customer Reviews:
A great canopy primer!.......2002-02-22
One of best synopsis of the current to near current canopy research topics, struggles, and future agendas! Lowman and Nadkarni continue to out do themselves with this suberbly edited book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in forest ecology and forest canopies who aren't afraid to look at some graphs. You'll learn something....
Exhaustive, Intriguing, and Well researched.......2000-06-26
I recently used this book for an indepedent study on Canopy Ecology and found it abosutley indispensible. Lowman and Nadkarni used the work of such big name scientists as Nigel Stork and Terry Erwin to assemble an array of canopy topics including access, structure, nutrient cycling, species compossition, epihyte and hemiephyte ecology, and even ethnobotany. Each chapter is clear cut and informative and the book does not waste space with cheesy fru-fru. Of particular interest to the aspiring canopy researcher is the suggestions for new avenues of research given at the end of almost every chapter.

The most comprehensive book on the subject to date. This book takes you into a world where few have been before, the forest canopy! A cutting edge book for a cutting edge field!

Book Description
`A wounded mountain lion moves from his mountain habitat to a Papago Indian hut in Arizona's Sonoran desert during a record-breaking July day. All creation adapts to the blistering heat until a cloudburst causes a flash flood. With a measured yet vivid style, this introduction to desert ecology makes a memorable impact." SLJ.
Customer Reviews:
A dramatic look into an otherworldly environment.......2001-04-19
Naturalist Jean Craighead George introduces us to the world of the mountain lion, the road runner, the cactus, the kangaroo rat, the ringtailed cat, the swift fox, the elf owl, the coyote, and the bombadier beetle in this book as she did wolves and caribou in JULIE OF THE WOLVES and peregrine falcons in MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. A young Papago Indian girl named Bird Wing and her mother live in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. This usually arid place is about to fall victim to a terrible thunderstorm and a flash flood. Bird Wing and all the animals of the desert struggle to find shelter before the flood. Some will survive--and some will not. This is a beautiful story about the close connection between human beings and all living things, and the unpredictable ways of nature. Other books in the ONE DAY series that include exciting natural disasters are ONE DAY IN THE ALPINE TUNDRA and ONE DAY IN THE PRAIRIE. There is also the fascinating ONE DAY IN THE WOODS and ONE DAY IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST. And don't forget Jean Craighead George's 80+ stories about nature, like The Thirteen Moons series and THERE'S AN OWL IN THE SHOWER.
Introducing young readers to the desert world.......2000-02-25
Yet another wonderful book by an author very much in tune with nature and ecological concerns. She teaches while she entertains. Having lived in the region portrayed in this book, it became a gift to young friends back in Minnesota to introduce them to a COMPLETELY different world. Yielded fun discussion and comparison. They wondered at and enjoyed it very much!
This book was not that great.......1999-10-11
As I was reading this book it did't tell me that much about anything except that this did this and that did that. If I were you I would not buy this book. Although it is my opinion on the book, you might really like it.

Book Description
The study of biochemical adaption provides fascinating insights into how organisms "work" and how they evolve to sustain physiological function under a vast array of environmental conditions. This book describes how the abilities of organisms to thrive in widely different environments derive from two fundamental classes of biochemical adaptions: modifications of core biochemical processes that allow a common set of physiological functions to be conserved, and "inventions" of new biochemical traits that allow entry into novel habitats. Biochemical Adaption: Mechanisms and Process in Physiological Evolution asks two primary questions. First, how have the core biochemical systems found in all species been adaptively modified to allow the same fundamental types of physiological processes to be sustained throughout the wide range of habitat conditions found in the biosphere? Second, through what types of genetic and biochemical processes have new physiological functions been fabricated? The primary audience for this book is faculty, senior undergraduates, and graduate students in environmental biology, comparative physiology, and marine biology. Other likely readers include workers in governmental laboratories concerned with environmental issues, medical students interested in some elements of the book, and medical researchers.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointing book.......2007-08-31
Overall I was rather disappointed with this book. It wastes several pages on "inspirational" stories, and although it discusses mental aspects such as confidence and goal setting, there isn't particularly anything that you couldn't figure out for yourself. Same with most of the treatment on physical conditioning. Anyone with some background in sports or fitness and halfway decent intelligence could figure out most of if for themselves. It mentions specific fitness requirements for a few elite units, but you could probably get the same info just by going to a recruiter (who would probably have the most up-to-date information anyway). There are a few useful tips on nutrition and survival techniques, as well as a few hand-to-hand combat techniques, but overall I wouldn't rate this book as being worth buying.
Mental, Physical Endurance.......2007-07-24
This book does excellent job of covering overall the subject comprehensively, with good illustrations and does not bog down into detail, or focus to the point of excessive respectivity. Is seems to me a good phy. ed. starter for any age experienced with reading.
Average reading.......2007-03-31
Good for a general idea of special forces training regimen, but doesn't delve deep enough into the actual training. Very little combat training info, good for a general read but definitely not nuts and bolts type stuff I expected.
Elite forges manual of Mental and Physical Endurance.........2007-01-28
This manual is the greatest self improvement and motivational guide for the layman...well worth the price..it will improve your life in ways you can't yet imagine....
The Jedi Training Manual.......2006-12-19
I purchased this book in Australia where it's titled, "The SAS and Elite Forces Manual of...".
I was extrememly impressed with the topic coverage and the depth that the author went into. Mr. Stilwell touches all the bases here... detailed pysical and mental preparation, several exercise regimines, nutrition fundamentals, basics on hand-to-hand combat and ending with a nice intro to "advanced techniques".
Mostly, I was impressed with the section on mental preparation, as this is a crucial area that similar books tend to gloss over, or exclude altogeher.
In this book we have interesting and detailed writing on things like goals, positive attitude and thinking, controlling emotions, meditation, self-esteem, and confidence.
The section on physical preparation is also excellent. Containing sample workout schedules, easy-to-understand illustrations, and just plain good information on exercise.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is endeavoring to join the military or take on any daunting challenge. Or to anybody who is just interested in improving themselves mind, body and soul.
May the Force be with you.
