3 out of 5 stars Very good but too elitist.......2006-11-27

Definitely covers all the good places but only has token "vintage" and "discount" entries and entirely ignores the 34th street shopping district in the garment district where there is a ton of stuff to be found. Focuses way too much attention on Soho. To be a fashionista in NYC though, you definitely need this book. One thing it needs to have is maps-by-neighborhood with the stores marked/numbered. Otherwise its hard to spend a day shopping, working from the book. You have to make your own map. But it is the only book of its type that I've seen so its a must have.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It's okay for new writers.......2007-07-18

I'd recommend this book, BUT only to short story writers who are considering the short story medium; that's to say, newer writers who are just starting to get a feel for the short story. This book is basic; and I'd expect nothing less of a "How To" book as thin as 135 pages. How to Write Short Stories reminds us that every good short story has a setting, a plot (with conflict), character development, and a theme. The book dives into dialogue and description, but the examples aren't that great. Is your story best told in the first or third person, or some variation? This book also opens the door to the strengths and weaknesses of perspective. It's not a bad book and it reads quickly, but it feels like a creative writing 101 class at a local community college. (Nothing against community colleges. I received my first two degrees from a community college.) The best part of this book is that it uses "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne as one of its samples. (However, is analyzing a classic without analyzing a modern written short story wise? That is like analyzing the movie, "Casablanca" as an approach to making movies today. The classics are great, but we need to look at the art form across time.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best little hand books.......2007-06-13

One of the best little hand books. Summs it up really. This book is concise and has little fluff and condenses what a dozen other How-Tos get to. True there are not so many stories and the explanations do not ruminate but get straight to the point, but its a great resource to have in hand with a book like Burroways Writing Fiction and Baechtel Shaping the Story. Its light and
best appreciated probably after you have waved through the other multi hundred page behemoths, but the behemoths will be the books you read and forget, this book you'll go back to repeatedly. I know I will.

4 out of 5 stars Deconstructing Short Stories.......2003-12-20

Sorenson's coverage of the mechanics of short story writing is brief and focuses on the craft, rather than the art, of writing. While she does well by covering theme, character, plot, setting, point of view, dialogue, and description, she offers little more than three to five pages on each. Writers wanting more than the basics on each of these elements will be disappointed.

However, 'How To Write Short Stories' does have something to give both novice and accomplished writers. Distinguishing it from the many other works on short story writing is her inclusion of three entire short stories and a paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of each. Using this technique, Sorenson shows the reader how concepts like theme and point of view are actually integrated into stories that work. She also includes extracts of stories in the chapters on the elements of writing to add clarity and comprehension to her advice. This analysis made the book a worthwhile read.

Other features include a checklist to help the reader ensure they have omitted no essential ingredient from their story, a chapter of tips on breaking into print, a section on basic grammar that includes explanations on the different types of clauses and phrases, and a handy glossary of the writing concepts and jargon mentioned in the preceding chapters.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Literary Short Story Books.......2002-10-16

Ms. Sorenson's book was the perfect accompanament to a short story course I took last January 2002 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The course taught how to write short stories that get accepted for literary magazines. It was taught by a young woman with a Master's Degree in Creative Writing. The course was excellent and when I found this book, I felt it was the course all over again. It covers so much of what we took, and, of course, I couldn't remember everything. This book, which I have already read once, is the perfect reference book for writing literary short stories. I have been recommending it to anyone interested in the short story writing form. I can't tell you how happy I was to have found it. I have read so many books on how to write short stories and they all tend to be the same, but this one takes your hand and walks you step by step through the process. I can't praise this book enough.

Keep up the good work, Ms. Sorenson.

        Sandra Merz.

        5 out of 5 stars Good for novice/student writers.......2000-11-07

This is a great guide to have after you've read all those articles and books on short story writing. Not a deep, wordy book on the art of short story writing, it neatly summarizes most of the points you were supposed to get out of that other reading. Each section includes outlines/checklists for analyzing the various elements of a short story (character, plot, dialog, POV, etc...) and sample stories for illustration. (The last third of the book is a detailed study of Hawthorne's "The Birthmark," which I just skimmed.)

I would guess that advanced writers might find this book too elementary, but as a student, it's been an extremely useful guide that brought the short story writing process into focus.

4 out of 5 stars Learn the tricks and unwritten rules about contests.......2004-08-22

When reading the words "open theme" in a contest, what comes to mind? Anything goes? It's anything but. The book imparts this type of advice along with what topics or themes to avoid and how to approach themed-based contests.

The book has over 80 pages of help plus an appendix of four examples of winning entries. John Howard Reid has entered 80 contests in 18 months as research for the book. He also runs a contest (which he mentions a few times), so he has the perspective of the other side, the person accepting and judging the entries.

Creating a winning entry takes more than outstanding content. Like applying for a job or college, it also takes research. The author provides details in condensed and easy-to-read chapters saving the writer time in trying to figure out the process.

He discusses scams and knowing which ones are legitimate contests and which are rip-offs. Not all scams are limited to the, submit-your-poem and you-won't-have-to-pay-a-dime, but you-might-want-to-buy-the-anthology-for-outrageous-prices-to-show-off-your-published-poem scam. Baird gives tips on how to weed out the bad seeds.

His advice comes across as a seasoned expert in the topic and he fearlessly shares his opinions about contests and rules.

            Book Description

How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories is Bruce Kimmel's first collection of short fiction. In these wonderful and evocative tales you'll find the warmth, humor, and emotion of his acclaimed Benjamin Kritzer trilogy (Benjamin Kritzer, Kritzerland, and Kritzer Time), the biting, acerbic wit of his two mysteries (Writer's Block and Rewind), and a new element-the world of fantasy. All but one of the stories takes place in Mr. Kimmel's favorite world-Los Angeles, both then and now. In I'll See You In My Dreams, a depressed, miserable man longs to escape to the world of a recurring dream, where the perfect woman is waiting for him. In How To Write A Dirty Book, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter in 1959 Hollywood takes on the challenge of writing a naughty novel as a way to supplement his meager income-with surprising results! In Opening Out of Town, a bickering vacationing couple lose their way and stumble onto an all-singing, all-dancing small town. In Your Worst Nightmare, a seventy-two-year-old man seeks revenge against an Internet tormentor. With these and other stories, Mr. Kimmel takes you on a wild ride, a ride filled with nostalgia, longing, laugh-out-loud humor, fear, retribution, and love.

            4 out of 5 stars A Collection To Enjoy.......2006-11-27

As with a collection of short stories, whether it by a single author or a bevy of authors, you are going to like more stories than others. In this first collection of short stories by Bruce Kimmel this is the case. The good news is that I enjoyed reading all the stories and some stood out more than others.

My favorite story was Opening Out Of Town. This is the most comical of the seven stories in this collection. I was also able to visualize the events as they unfolded.

The title story, How To Write a Dirty Book, The Book Scout and Adventures With My Father also have a similar theme with Opening Out of Town; show business. The first two were fun and satisfying reads.

The third story: Adventures With My Father was more surprising to me. Although it is quite somber, "Adventures" is Kimmel's best written story in this collection. It is also his most personal story. Even more so than his other Benjamin Kritzer novels. Benjamin Kritzer may have been a "Lollypops and Cotton Candy" look back, this story is more serious. The story held my interest and of all the stories in this collection this one holds the possibility of being expanded into a novel.

The stories that bothered me were not the writing quality which were very good, but their subject matter. I See You In My Dreams and Maddie both deal with suicidal people and often hit too close to home for me as I knew people like that. I See You In My Dreams had a Twilight Zone feel to it but its ultimate conclusion was already pre-ordained for me.

Maddie, which seemed like part four of the Benjamin Kritzer novels if they had continued was a nostalgic look back at a more innocent time. This is a real story of coming of age and an "older woman". The highs and lows of the story follow the highs and lows of the title character. A wonderful story.

Finally there is Your Worst Nightmare. At first I did not like it for a couple of reasons. The language and subject bothered me. Anything to do with racial hatred and prejudice is very difficult for me to read or watch as a film or play. Ultimately I felt that this story was too fantastic to be true and the language and subject matter was there for shock value. BUT I did speak with the author Bruce Kimmel about my feelings about the story. He sent me to the website to see the postings and situations that the story was based on. I was shocked to see how much more hateful this person really was.

Once I knew this about the story's true background. It became one of my favorites in the collection.

My overall opinion?: A very enjoyable read. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Read.......2006-10-15

How to Write a Dirty Book and Other Short Stories! is a pure pleasure. Each story is structured by Bruce Kimmel to keep its reader turning the page.

From fun and clever delights such as Opening Out of Town, The Book Scout, and How to Write a Dirty Book to the darker and poignant tales Maddie, I'll See You in My Dreams, and Adventures with My Father, this collection is an emotional roller coaster of a read.

Here are my favorites (hard to choose!)
I'll See You in My Dreams; the story of a man's downward spiral into his own world of fantasy and love.

How to Write a Dirty Book; follows the life of an out of work screen writer forced to resort to writing dirty books to make money and the effect it has on his life.

The Book Scout; about a book collector and the price he pays for being a little too greedy.

Adventures with My father; explores the relationship between a young girl and her father and the importance of keeping in touch with those you love.

Each of the seven short stories in this book serves as a nice way to begin or end any day. Also recommended are Bruce Kimmel's other books; The Kritzer trilogy and his two mystery thrillers' Rewind and Writer's Block.

            5 out of 5 stars A delightful story collection.......2006-10-15

I am not a short-story lover--I usually prefer a novel--but I loved this book! The seven stories are a diverse mix and all are well-written, interesting, and enjoyable--yet each in a different way. Sad, whimsical, tender, and just plain fun. Each story grabbed my attention right from the start and held it so well that I couldn't put the book down. I was sorry to see it end.

This is Mr Kimmel's sixth book and one of his best. His voice is strong, witty, clever, and astute. I look forward to his next work.

            5 out of 5 stars Size Doesn't Matter.......2006-10-15

I am a fan of short stories. I never seem to have large windows of time to delve into lengthy tomes, but I love to have a nice short story to settle down with before I go to sleep. These stories fit the bill perfectly, and are thought-provoking enough to influence your dreams, once you get to dreamland.

The stories have already been individually reviewed nicely, so I will add that these stories are on par with other short story writers I like: HH Munro, EM Forster and O Henry. (What's with all these initials? Short names to go with the short stories?) They are unpredictable and once you start a story you don't want to put the book down until you finish the story.

Anyone who has participated in an internet discussion group will find "Your Worst Nightmare" particularly resonant, since even the most genteel community can attract abusive trolls who ruin it for the rest of the group. This story brings that scenario to a very satisfying conclusion!

"Opening Out Of Town" is another wonderful piece of speculative fiction, and would make a great short film. Of course, since Mr. Kimmel is also a renown singer/songwriter in the Johnny Mercer/Broadway tradition, it's no wonder that you can almost hear these songs when you read the lyrics. If this ever becomes a book on tape, maybe the songs could be produced for that. If so, I would buy it again!

The rest of the stories are funny, sad, poignant and ... sexy. With a title like "How to Write A Dirty Book", they'd have to be, right? But the title story is funny-sexy, reminiscent of Nicholson Baker's "The Fermata". The dialogue is witty, and some of the lines made me laugh out loud.

This is the first book I've read by Mr. Kimmel, but I enjoyed it enough to order the whole Kritzer trilogy. My medical advice to cure your reading malaise: take one story and go to bed!

5 out of 5 stars O. Henry? No. Oh, Kimmel!.......2006-10-09

Back in the days when literature was literate, the short story was a respected form of expression. Nowadays, blogs have taken the place of the well-crafted short story. If you long for those short tales that left you breathless, made you think, or made you FEEL something - then Bruce Kimmel's "How to Write a Dirty Book and other stories!" is for you.

There is much to praise here. The seven tales take you on little journeys into the lives of some very different people. But whoever you are, you are in at least ONE of the stories.

Laughter and tears share the same page in a couple of the stories. They are all written with the jaunty personal style that Kimmel brought to his Kritzer Trilogy and his two mystery novels. But don't let the ease with which these stories are read mislead you into thinking they are carelessly written. Each word, each paragraph, probably even each punctuation mark was chosen with craft and care.

With a nod to O'Henry, Rod Serling, and Ray Bradbury, "How to...." will delight you.

As soon as I reached the end of each story, I thought "That's my favorite" - until I finished the next one.

"I'll See You in My Dreams" story number one takes you into that strange world we all live in at one time or another, and the exit of its protaganist from his situation propels us in an unexpected direction.

The title story is next - a clever homage to the lurid paperbacks that used to populate the back of the drugstore. Funny and perfectly set in the near past.

Story number three is named after one of its characters, "Maddie" - but the heartstrings flutter and the tears fall as life goes on, almost.

"Opening Out of Town" was the story I liked least, but that was only because it needs to have a CD to play along as you read. You'll see what I mean when you get there - make sure your gas tank is filled.

Story number five could only take place in the current 21st century. One wonders what Serling and Bradbury would have made of the reality of our time. They couldn't improve on what Kimmel has done. Anyone who has spent any time on the computer will empathize. If only it could be done this way!

"The Book Scout" is a Serling-esque/EC Comics type of yarn that will please and mystify. I thought I knew where it was going, but I was wrong.

Then suddenly for story number seven "Adventures With My Father", Kimmel changes voices. And what a sweetheart of a story it is. We come full circle at the end - we are all connected, life is funny that way.

I will put this book near my copy of Ray Bradbury's "Dandelion Wine" - my ALL TIME favorite collection of short stories. It deserves its place there.

Thanks, Mr Kimmel, for seven adventures into your mind. It was fun to spend some time there.

5 out of 5 stars They definitely get attention!.......2000-06-24

I ordered these on a whim, seeing as the price was only a dollar. I figured, hey, I can stick them on telephone booths if nothing else. :-) Well, I took them with me to school (I'm a high school junior) and had a ton of fun with them. Stickers with sayings like "FREE!" "Limited Time Offer" "Out of Order" and "You Want This!" become a lot of fun when stuck on a piece of homework, a bathroom door, or even just the nearest person.

I don't know if I'd recommend them for serious advertising, because the format and appearance isn't very formal, but for making flyers etc. or just having fun, they are great! And what a price! I highly recommend buying a pack of these entertaining stickers.
