Book Description
Oxygenases have been the subject of much study and are of great interest and application. Biomimetic chemistry of oxygenases has yielded clarification of enzyme structures and reaction mechanisms and has also led to the development of synthetic oxygenation processes. This volume contains 8 chapters written by leading researchers which together present an overview of di- and mono-oxygenases and their model systems from the point of view of functions, structures and mechanisms. An up-to-date clarification of structures around active centres of heme- and nonheme-oxygenases is given with reference to the design of model complexes. Various contributions also discuss in detail the formation, structure and reactivity of metal-oxygen and metal-substrate species in both enzyme and model systems. The contents of the volume address the interface between bioinorganic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis and contains much to emphasize the importance of catalytic studies in bio- and biomimetic chemistry.
Audience: Research chemists interested in the use of oxygenases in catalysis.

Book Description
During recent years our enthusiasm for Radiative Decay Engineering (RDE) has continually increased. Many of the early predictions have been confirmed experimentally. We see numerous applications for RDE in biotechnology, clinical assays and analytical chemistry. While implementation of RDE is relatively simple, understanding the principles of RDE is difficult. The concepts are widely distributed in the optics and chemical physics literature, often described in terms difficult to understand by biophysical scientists.
RDE includes chapters from the experts who have studied metal particle optics and fluorophore-metal interactions. This collection describes the fundamental principles for the widespread use of radiative decay engineering in the biological sciences and nanotechnology.

Book Description
Biological chemistry is a major frontier of inorganic chemistry. Three special volumes devoted to Metal Sites in Proteins and Models address the questions: how unusual ("entatic") are metal sites in metalloproteins and metalloenzymes compared to those in small coordination complexes? And if they are special, how do polypeptide chains and co-factors control this? The chapters deal with iron, with metal centres acting as Lewis acids, metals in phosphate enzymes, with vanadium, and with the wide variety of transition metal ions which act as redox centres. They illustrate in particular how the combined armoury of genetics and structure determination at the molecular level are providing unprecedented new tools for molecular engineering.

Readable, Informative look at 1961 Season.......2007-06-22
This book about the 1961 Yankees and Roger Maris' topping of Babe Ruth's home run record is well worth reading. Former Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek and Terry Pluto provide an informative view from a quarter century later. Readers get a feel for the team, the pennant race against the Detroit Tigers, and most of all, Maris' challenge of the home run record that ended with his 61st on the season's last day. Both Maris and Mickey Mantle hit homers in bunches through August, but when Mantle faded (ending with 54) there was more than a little disappointment from some fans and sportswriters. Some didn't want the record going to this non-colorful North Dakotan who shunned the spotlight. As a result, Maris was sometimes treated unfairly by the media (whom he came to disdain), even while remaining a popular teammate. Kubek also provides anecdotes on payers like Mantle, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, etc. Like many other baseball fans, I have little use for the Yankees or their periodic domination of baseball, but this remains a very good book.
TONY KUBEK ALSO HOMERS IN THIS BOOK.......2006-01-22
THIS IS ABOUT THE RECORD BREAKING SEASON OF ROGER MARIS. TONY KUBEK DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING WHAT TOOK PLACE DURING THAT EXCITING SEASON OF 1961. ALOT OF DETAIL IS DEDICATED TO THE HOMERUN CHASE BUT IT ALSO COVERS MARIS'S RELATIONSHIP WITH MANTLE, THE PRESS AND OTHER PLAYERS. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ALL YANKEE AND BASEBALL FANS. VERY RECOMMENDED.
Fascinating description of Maris and the Yankee season.......1999-07-22
I can't believe the publisher didn't put a paperback edition out in the wake of the McGuire/Sosa home run chase, considering the renewed interest in Roger Maris. The authors produced one of the better written sports books. Despite Kubek's obvious love and respect for Maris and the Yankees, he doesn't get too gushy. Sports junkies will get their share of play by play descriptions and those interested in a personal look at Maris will be rewarded. Kubek doesn't ignore how the team is doing which lends authenticity to the story. Baseball mixes the individual and the group levels so both are included. Kubek also discusses and interviews the other players, but the book revolves around Maris.

Excellent Resource, Full of Well-Chosen Examples.......2006-04-03
This book is an excellent resource for teachers and parents who are involved in helping elementary students develop their writing skills. And while it is specifically written for helping students in grades 2-5, the concepts Overmeyer presents are sound writing practices for all ages.
More than a textbook, this book is a joy to read. The examples of actual student writing that he liberally peppers throughout each chapter are well-chosen, pertinent and endearing. I found myself drawn to each new chapter not only for the information and the how-to, but also to find out what else the students had written. Overmeyer does not limit the examples to the best and the most polished pieces, but shows students' works in progress so that we can see the process.
And with Overmeyer it is all about the process! He suggests that recopying isn't writing and he teaches students to edit and improve their writing rather than spend time recopying. Overmeyer is sensitive to all learners and learning styles and you will see your elementary student reflected within the pages of this book.
I have a 2nd grader, Danny, who absolutely hates to write, and since he wants to be an artist when he grows up, he believes that when it comes to writing, all he'll need to do is sign his name to his pieces of art! One technique Overmeyer suggests with reluctant writers is to draw pictures first and then arrange them in sequence and discuss them before starting to write, so I asked Danny to draw pictures and then tell me the story. After that I reiterated the story to Danny, reflecting what he already told me and giving him a chance to hear it again. It was amazing! Not only was Danny excited to create the story, but he pushed ahead, working to get sentence after sentence down on paper.
In this book you get Overmeyer's 20+ years of experience in teaching writing to students and helping teachers teach writing. Furthermore, Overmeyer is a writer himself and a member of the Denver Writing Project. He models writing right along with the students. They see him struggling with word choice and editing, just as they do.
Not only is this book is an important resource for both teachers and parents, but you will also actually enjoy reading it.

Decoupage the Traditional Way.......2002-07-06
In this Dover publication Hasbrouck Rawlings brings together a myriad diverse prints for hand coloring and black and white techniques. The few colored prints included are not very useful and are of poor quality, but the wide variety of engravings have something for most decoupeurs. The instructions on how to begin are very traditional and do not take account of the latest advances in the hobby - such as "New Decoupage" by Durwin Rice. Even so, both beginers and more advanced students are likely to find this source book inspirational - especially if you are keen to hand color your work and want a "period" feel. Good value for money but not a first book for beginers.
It is about time.......2000-04-06
I Haven't yet recieved my copy I Ordered , but I have borrowed my friends copy of "The Big Picture Sourcebook" often. This book has great and easy pictures and simple hints in it. They also have a section of ideas on crafts. I can't wait to get my own so I can stop having to borrow. Also for those who are new to decoupaging, they make the pictures easy to use and really help you through the process. I also find any clip art books published by Dover a really great source for decoupaging.
