Unspoiled Waters of New York.......2000-08-19

An immense compendium of the pristine paddling spots left in New York State. The authors looked for lakes with one goal in mind: find places where the water has not been spoiled by development, pollution, or powerboats. Unquestionably, they succeeded. The book describes over 100 trips across the state, with an expectedly high concentration in the Adirondack Mountains. For each trip, the authors describe launch locations, scenery, notable areas on the lake, and any interesting wildlife seen during their paddle. Many of the lakes are a bit small for a full day trip, but if one only has a few hours to paddle, these are certainly places to go. The authors did a good job of including sites from across the entire state, and tried to include a number of lakes near New York City. Unfortunately, the authors almost ignored flat river paddling, but a few calm rivers and streams did make their way into the book. Overall, if you are a New Yorker who loves getting away from it all, this is one book to have.

Good general review of the NY region.......2000-08-17

For the novice, such as myself, this is a good book to get you started on exploring the canoeing areas of New York. They review the area, the water, and the wildlife. It is not an exhaustive list and many areas we found were seasonal, but that wasn't mentioned in the book. I hope they write another updated and more exhaustive review in the future.

Definitely a nice book overall, with thorough descriptions of calm bodies of water in New York State. However, I'm disappointed with the lack of map detail. In addition, there are no coordinates given (i.e., lattitude and longitude). This is an updated book and should definitely include coordinates for modern-day GPS users. I had to cross-reference another book that had better map detail and included coordinates (title: The Hudson River Water Trail Guide-6th edition).

In time for spring and summer, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has released a new, second edition of Quiet Water: New York, a Canoe and Kayak guide to the Empire State compiled by John Hayes and Alex Wilson.

As the title suggests, the authors are very clear that their new guidebook is designed for the canoe and kayak enthusiast who is look for quiet or solitude. There is no whitewater assistance offered here. However, ninety different options around New York State including nine locations within Central New York are suggested in this book.

"Quiet Water" also includes a plethora of helpful suggestions to plan your next outing on the water. The books provides maps, habitat descriptions of each area, phone numbers, websites, even a description of animal habitats one might encounter on the water. Scattered throughout the volume are photos from the water and profiles of local animals.

A great companion guide to anyone who looking to paddle this summer.

Okay, I haven't even read the book, I'm simply reacting to the title.
I've spent a bit of time travelling and lodging in BZ, starting in 1992, and I can assure you that no gringo can live there for $450/month-not at what he/she regards as "living". It is the most expensive country in Central America, and, while beautiful and friendly and easy (English spoken) it sure ain't any bargain. And I love the country.

The authors blow all credibility with that "$450/ month" balderdash. Why not entitle it "Free Money?" Same difference.

There has to be something better out there.......2001-09-26

First of all, Bill and Claire Gray need to hire a good editor. Even a bad editor could improve this. Their book is so full of punctuation and grammar errors that it makes reading difficult and continually annoys.

Beyond that, the book is brief, anecdotal, and incomplete. It's poorly organized and badly illustrated. I simply don't understand the positive reviews. I'll be looking for something better since I'm hoping to spend time in Belize soon and possibly retire there.

Granted, the Blair's have shared some helpful hints from their years of living in Belize. There are tips on entering the country, transportation, and immigration. Some of these, though, seem unreliable and vague.

If this were the only book on the subject it might be worth having, but I'm guessing there has to be something better out there.

Excellent-Entertaining-Factual Retire to Paradise Guide!.......2001-06-16

Belize Retirement Guide has impressed me as much more than then other retirement guides! When I read it, I felt like I had a guide right next to me and that I was actually visiting Belize. The Gray's have provided a guide that is both entertaining and factual which you will understand, after reading it, could only have been written by someone who actually lives there and done that. They provide you with both the Pro's and Con's of moving to and living in Belize from their first hand knowledge and not armchair or internet research. I found the Belize Retirement Guide to be an excellent resource for anyone considering either visiting or actually retiring to Belize. If you have ever dreamed, like I have, of retiring to a warm tropical climate where living is much more affordable than the U.S., then the Belize Retirement Guide will help you beyond anything else I have discovered before. Everything you need to know is available in this complete guidebook. Just be careful, however, because after reading the Belize Retirement Guide you may find yourself calling your travel agent the next day to book a flight and you just may be ready to make it a one way ticket.

Just returned from Belize-had a great time , will be returning in November. I just can't praise the retirement guide enough.It was with us all the time as a quick reference and gave my sister and I that special "edge". After practically memorizing "Belize Retirement Guide before we departed , it was as if, when we arrived , we were visiting an old friend. I could find no category in which comment or assistance and addresses or phone numbers had not been included.

We have found a house to rent and are planning on retiring in Belize.

Of all the books I've read on Belize, and I've read plenty, the writings of Bill and Claire Gray are the only works I've found that are written by expatriates actually living in Belize.Their writing is a love affair with Belize.If you want to find out about living in Belize they are where we should start.

This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

I thought the artwork in this book was stunning, and the reproduction quality and colors were lovely. I did have one major problem with the book, two of the main designs on the cover (topmost horizontal design and the center horizontal design) are NOT IN THE BOOK! These are two of the main patterns I planned to use from the book, and now if I want to, I need to get them from the cover, where they are covered by text. I found this to be unacceptable! Please keep this fact in mind if the cover is what won you over.

Dover Publications is the friend of anyone with nearly any sort of interest (and not much money). If you're interested in the ways and means of New Art, get this one.

M. Verneuil clearly would have liked the Dover editors. LIke them, he had his wide-ranging interests, in his case in botany, Japanese design, and decorative arts (to judge by his booklist).

This book is a feast that shifts back and forth from stylization and abstraction on one hand to close observation of natural plant forms on the other. One two-page spread (plates 62 & 63) in particular juxtaposes both this reduction into pattern and the accuracy of his eye.

These are the crown imperial and the German iris from Verneuil's Etude de la plante. Side views of each plant give you the random visual complexity of the original -- almost scruffy leaves, in the crown imperial's case. Both set forth the visually overwhelming detail of the blossoms. But, at the bottom of both plates are plan views of a blossom, simple, regular and compelling as a Japanese mon.

If the rest of Verneuil's plant book is this good, I'm hoping Dover reprints the whole thing one day.

When Verneuil moves to greater depths (or is it heights?) of abstraction, the results are often stunning. Don't miss plate 27, an overall pattern of maidenhair fern in shades of orange, or plate 28, a tiled pattern of wild iris in rippling water.

It's interesting to compare the sunflowers in plate 79, apparently a detail from a running line of tiles, with the one in plate 59 from Etude de la plante. The latter captures the petals in wild abandon, the leaves in their rough, almost papery reality. The former flattens and regularizes each leaf, and views the flowers head-on, giving us a literal sunburst of shape and color in complex but regular pattern.

Throughout, M. Verneuil brings a solid color sense, now playing with shades of neighboring hues, now with contrasting hues. Each one seems absolutely right.

You can't open this book to any page without feeling that the mind and eye that originated it were pretty special. It's more than likely that some of this impression is due to the care of Carol Belanger Grafton, who selected and arranged the plates -- many of the two-page spreads seem to delight in comparing, or mirroring, or contrasting Verneuil's designs.

If you like art nouveau, you'll want this book.
