Book Description

In the thirty years since its discovery by Terje Lomo and Tim Bliss, Long Term Potentiation (LTP) has become one of the most extensively studied topics in contemporary neuroscience. In LTP the strength of synapses between neurons is potentiated following brief but intense activation. LTP is thought to play a central role in learning and memory, though the exact nature of its role is less clear. In spite of years of research, there are many questions about LTP regarding its functional relevance that remain unanswered - for example, is it a model of memory formation, or is the actual neural mechanism used by the brain to store information? This volume presents a state of the art account of LTP. It begins with lively accounts, by the scientists most closely involved, of the discovery of LTP and of the experiments that established its basic properties and induction mechanisms. Later contributions contain reviews and new research that cover the range of molecular, cellular, physiological and behavioural approaches to the study of LTP. Provocative, accessible, and authoritative, this book makes it clear why LTP continues in equal measure to puzzle and beguile neuroscientists today. Advance praise for Long Term Potentiation: "This book provides a definitive overview of the development of ideas about synaptic plasticity and about the wide range of current research in this fascinating field." Colin Blakemore, University of Oxford

4 out of 5 stars HOW DO WE REMEMBER?.......2004-11-24

Conference proceedings are often of limited value, riddled with typographical errors and worth little more than the paper they are printed on, but this one is different. Originally published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the work has been materially changed and updated, so it is now virtually error free. First noticed 30 years ago, long-term potentiation (LTP) comprises a family of refractory phenomena that last for hours, days and weeks rather than the usual milliseconds; thus LTP offers an empirical basis for short-term memory.

Following an insightful introduction by the editors come seven chapters in a section on the early history of LTP research, which I found particularly valuable. More often than not, authors of research papers assume that their readers are familiar with the background studies; thus it is difficult to work one's way into an ongoing field. LTP is important in neuroscience because it has opened the possibility of confirming the concept of synaptic plasticity which was assumed by Donald Hebb in his classic work The Organization of Behavior. Thus studies of LTP are a means of getting at the corresponding physiological bases for memory. Although many unanswered questions remain, this empirical hook together with the techniques of molecular biology have already led to plausible microscopic means for realization of LTP - and of long-term depression (LTD) - which are ably described in the sections on induction and expression of the phenomenon. A section on persistence raises the difficult question of how long LTP can last (and why), and a section on function considers how this research impinges on experimental psychology, neatly bringing the discussion back to the original motivation. Finally a short section of three chapters sketches some of the directions in which future LTP and LTD research may be heading.

The book starts from venice and works its way down to sicily. It has much information and it is all easy with maps of the sub regions to help out. It also has a good general words of travel wisdom in the front.

Great book. Thought the word of mouth section throughout the book was very useful given that it was filled with recommendations from everyday people. Interactive Maps also easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars My best aid (out of many) in planning my Italy trip.......2006-06-16

My wife and I travel often, and recently we started taking our kids along with us. I personally love to have many guides while planning the trip. For my North Italy trip I had: (1) The Rough Guide to Italy (2006); (2) The Green Guide - Italy - by Michelin (2006); (3) Let's Go Italy 2006; (4) A 2002 edition of an AA (British) guide to Tuscany; (5) Fodor's Italy 2006; (6) A set of more localized books; (7) The internet.

Buying Fodor's was almost an afterthought, as I was sure it would not contribute to our trip - we love to get off the beaten trek in our sightseeing, and then also spend part time tracking typical local customs such as agricultural, religious, culinary and artistic activities, which usually are not mentioned in guidebooks. I was really surprised to find quite a few such activities listed in Fodor's. For example, it showed us that we could join a tour demonstrating the preparation of the famous Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese, and it was this book that convinced us to spend 2 full days for visiting 5 ancient villages hanging on the cliffs above the sea - the Cinque Terre. It also highlights activities that are of higher interest for children. The guide's layout is easy to navigate and inviting, and the writing never tedious. I found myself turning more and more to this book as my first source of information, and only afterwards complementing my knowledge from the others.

The downsides of the book are obvious - the hotels and restaurants mentioned are good, but the choice is rather limited, and not intended for those on a budget, or for those looking for that local neighborhood restaurant. For this, the internet (starting with sites like tripadvisor.com and virtualtourist.com) is the best source, complemented by some of the other guides mentioned above. But Fodor's is my preferred a source for the initial planning of the trip.

As phrasebooks go, this one is very good. It'll get you around easy enough without making a total fool of yourself. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Best Hebrew phrase book for most travellers.......2007-02-26

Overall, this phrase book is the best I've seen for Hebrew. While there are a few things that I would like to see added, it contains a lot of information for its price and size!

Some of the nice features of this phrase book are:
- The grammer section is quite extensive and gives a good foundation for you to create your own phrases using the words and structures of other phrases
- There are quite a few cultural notes and tips, given the book's small size
- Most phrases use a passive form so that it can be said by and to anyone. When this is not possible, both male and female forms are given for nearly all phrases so that you will be correct whether you are a man or woman and whether you are speaking to a man or woman
- The section on numbers includes both masculine and feminine forms, so you can count, tell time, give distances and say quantities in the correct form
- There is a two-page section with key Arabic phrases (though it is only transliterated into English, so you won't be able to read any signs or show it to an Arabic speaker)
- There is a small, but useful English-Hebrew dictionary as well as a Hebrew-English dictionary included
- There is an index which makes it easier to locate a specific topic
- There is a Hebrew finder (Hebrew index), which makes it easy for a Hebrew speaker to use your book and find a phrase (they can also use the Hebrew-English dictionary)
- There are several pages for your own notes (you can write down important phrases for yourself that will use so you can tell waiters, medics, etc.)

Some of the cons of this book (found in the Berlitz phrase book) are:
- Only British English is used - so Americans must know some British vocabulary to find certain words and topics (i.e. a pharmacist is called a chemist in British English)
- There are no conversion references for American travellers who may not be familiar with the metric system
- There are no genders given for Hebrew words in the included dictionaries (though you can usually guess this by the ending of the word)
- The Hebrew text is smaller and closer to the binding than that in the Berlitz phrase book, which makes it sometimes hard to read
- There is no specific "sign" or "menu" reader, though the Hebrew-English dictionary can be used for this
- The last page is an advertisement for Lonely Planet, rather than emergency phrases and phone numbers (as a fix - tear this page out and use the last of the included pages for notes to write down the number to your embassy and/or consulate, emergency numbers [i.e. Police: 100 Ambulance: 101 Fire: 102], and any other emergency information you want to access fast)

Overall, this dictionary includes the most phrases and features for its size and price. I would recommend it for most travellers and even as a useful guide if you are learning Hebrew.

2 out of 5 stars Hebrew vowels missing - worthless if you know a little Hebrew.......2007-02-08

For each English phrase, this book presents the transliteration along with the Hebrew text, BUT the Hebrew text is missing vowels. If you have no intention of learning any Hebrew letters and plan to get by on the transliteration alone, you may find this book acceptable. However, if you already know how to read Hebrew -- or hope to be able to learn -- you'll wind up thwarted. People who are completely literate in Hebrew don't need the vowels -- but they won't be buying a Hebrew phrasebook either. Shame on Lonely Planet for making an otherwise decent book unusable to many of us.

5 out of 5 stars A Resourceful Book with Tons of Information.......2003-09-03

As usual, this is one the many wonderful phrase books published by Lonely Planet. The "Hebrew Phrasebook" gives the reader indept knowledge about the origins of the Hebrew language. With it's idioms and pronunciations, this phrasebook would be an excellent compliment to the Pimsleur Hebrew program. Unlike the media, this book reflects the positive side of Israel. I love the details about the different religious customs and festivals. The author also gives a detailed description of Israel's palatable produce and tasty traditional meals. There's a small section about the Israeli army and how to respond when approached by a soldier. Also, I find the medical emergency section to be very helpful. Many countries want you to think that they have a utopian atmosphere, in which sometimes is far from the truth. That's why it's very important to know how to ask for help when encountering dangerous situations and medical emergencies. For anyone traveling to Israel, this book is a treasure to have. It's very informative and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Best pocket-sized phrasebook and dictionary for price.......2001-06-09

This phrasebook is easily one of the best I have seen. It's small size will fit conveniently into a pocket, making it more useful than larger ones. Although it does not have a huge dictionary, it does have many common words and phrases. Since it does fit into a pocket, I found myself going to this book much more often than the larger dictionary that I had with me. It contains very useful sections on pronunciation and grammar as well as phrases arranged by topic. There is a dictionary in the back that is both English-to-Hebrew (with phonetic pronunciation!)as well as Hebrew-to-English. Both dictionaries contain the words in English, the phonetic pronunciation, and the Hebrew spelling. The English-to-Hebrew dictionary lists the English word, the Hebrew pronunciation, and then the Hebrew word. The Hebrew-to-English dictionary is designed for English speakers; the words are given by their pronunciation, then the English word, then the Hebrew spelling. There is also a good section that covers the correct wording based on gender. This guide is designed for english speakers, and unlike most of the Hebrew dictionaries out there, it does not require prior knowledge of the Hebrew aleph-bet. There are also interesting cultural anecdotes and tidbits sprinkled throughout the text as well as descriptions of all the important Jewish festivals and holidays.

This book gives the best bang for your buck; you can spend more money on a more extensive phrase book, but this one will get you through most situations.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-09-13

It's rated a 4 because I assumed there would be more action shots of horses jumping, running ect. There wasn't. While there are some very fine quality line drawings; most of the actual horse pictures are just standing there or in a canter pose like the much illustrated Tennessee Walker.

The other poses were with someone grooming the hores, ferriers doing their thing, braiding the mane and bathing. There are also details of different bridles, handgrips while riding western and English and mucking the stalls.

It only got a 4 star rating because I was expecting more horse action shots (jumping, drinking, rearing) but Dover's books are high quality, the cd is handy esp with the .TIFF format included and although I was disappointed that the book wasn't what I thought it was going to be I was pleasantly surprised that they did include some of the other activities where it relates to horses and the equipment.

5 out of 5 stars Gaited Horse Activity and Coloring Book.......2002-08-24

If I could rate this book higher I would. This book is a terrific educational tool for older children and even adults. My teenagers really liked learning the different languages and about the different gaited breeds of horses. I would really recommend this book for anyone who has a child in 4-h learning about horses! The pictures were well drawn by a very talented artist who really brought out the features of each horse and the activities were very helpful in learning the breeds and the gaits.

The Ehvelen people were the Mother's own; their purpose was to protect the helpless from slavery, oppression and abuse. We Giants remember them as Elves, Fairies, Leprechauns, Pixies, Dwarves, Gnomes, Trolls and Djinns. The Ehvelen people were peaceful, living in harmony with nature while their enemies, the Doshi, were a warrior tribe who enslaved women and measured a man's importance by his number of sons.

These first three books of the series tell the story of First Horse, who left his people at the age of fifteen, not returning until ten years later. He learned military secrets and formed alliances against the savage Doshi, hoping to be able to enable the defense of the people. In this epic saga, Horse becomes a language expert, a weapon maker, a traveling magician and a gaming champion. Along the way, he also discovers the secrets and alliances that guarantee the continuance of his people, if only he can make it home alive.

Unfortunately, Horse's fast paced travels keep the story a bit superficial, preventing the depth of characterization that I expected. Nevertheless, the most interesting element of these tales is the framework of the tales themselves. Dr. Rich explains that the stories were handed down through the oral tradition. Until 800 A. D. the Ehvelen people were living in Ireland, and a scribe called Grasshopper transcribed the stories which were later found on scrolls. Dr. Rich began his work of translating the scrolls in 1993. The lending of historical data, with geographical details and the provision of credentials, Dr. Rich claiming to be employed by the Department of Mythology at the University of Selfril Islands, lends the tale a fascinating historical complexity and depth. For fans who enjoy these first three books, two more will follow, which include THE GREAT KHAN and THE AREG WARS.
