Customer Reviews:
I want more books at this level.......2000-01-12
I read this book from the library, but soon I will try to buy one for myself, because it is very special. I refer to it and forward what I remember from it onto various email lists all the time. The author includes substantial detail of the sort there is usually not enough of in wolf books, without overwhelming with boring or inaccurate statistics, or losing a good writing style. The author respects and loves the wolf FOR WHAT IT IS INHERENTLY. If you are studying dog or wolf behavior as a "serious layperson" this is a must have. The kind of detailed insight this book has is hard to find, one of the rare similar books is CALMING SIGNALS ... by Turid Rugaas(sp?), which is about dog body language (and therefore based on wolf pack language).
what you always wanted to know about wolves.......1999-09-28
Mr. Lawrence tells us all about wolves in laymans terms he does not get to deep in this book for the normal person interested in wildlife to become overwelmed with the subject. Always the perfect nature writter this time Mr. Lawrence spends time on a captive wolf area studing the wolves and relating the details. Good reading for the people out there who have bad ideas about this animal you might change your mind on these wise creatures.
The increadable life of the Wolves.......1998-10-14
This book is increadable it really gives a person a true understanding of such a beautiful animal as it tells about their traits characteristics and personalities. It also explains the hiarchy of the pack and the mating of the wolves and interaction between the pack members and with humans. For me it was especially enjoyable as I was able to really relate to the discription of the wolves in Jim Wuepper's pack in upper Michagan after seeing a film on this pack narrated by R.D. Lawrence shown at the Wolf Centre in Haliburton, Ontario as so much of his focus in this book is on that particular pack. It was also very enjoyable to me knowing that Jim Wueppler's pack came to the the Wolf Centre in the early 1990's where some of it's decendents still reside. I recommend this book to anyone who would like a better understanding of such a beautiful animal it was truly very interesting and enjoyable.
Insight into human social interaction.......1998-10-04
Great book for both adults and teenagers. Surprisingly, it reveals data suggesting that the wolves have a hierarchical/social structure most close to us humans (when we act on our animal level.) It was an insight into office life around me and into human jealousy situations around.
Informative but not overwhelming for pleasure reading!.......1998-06-25
Being the first book on wolves that I read, 'In Praise of Wolves' is very enlightening and informative. The relationship that the author had with the wolves and all the personal encounters, both with the people involved and the wolves, are very touching. I think the author has done a marvelous job in explaining to us about this much-misunderstood species. The book is written in a 'story' form, thus making it, i think, an informative but yet 'light' book to read during pleasure time. And for those who are not much familiar with the wolves like myself, this book does not contain too much scientific writings that are too overwhelming and hard to digest. And in cases where there are, the author dealt it with much comprehension thus making it very easy to understand especially to those who are ignorant to that certain aspect. Personally, I had a wonderful time reading this book and it got me into reading many other wolves books.

Seeing Paris While Walking.......2007-04-15
I prefer guidebooks that aren't just mammoth listings of everything (hotels, restaurants, sights). This compact book hits the target with its highlights and its walking tours.
You get directions, maps and commentary. Boxed notes give relevance to much that you would unknowingly pass by. Boxed in sage green are SHOPPING TIPS and ENTERTAINMENT TIPS while RESTAURANT TIPS are boxed in dark green. This covers the sights on the Island and the 20 Arrondissements plus some further afield (Versailles, Disneyland Paris, etc.).
The second part of the book details walks to take. Try the Islands walk, the Left Bank walk, the Marais walk, the major sights walk, the Montmartre walk, or some culinary walks. Sage green boxes highlight DETOURS to catch a special sight.
I wish I'd had this on my first visit to Paris which I found quite expensive and a little overwhelming.
its ok.......2007-03-09
Its ok...I didn't really use it b/c I did a lot of sightseeing and this doesnt include all of them. Its nice for ppl who are in paris for 3 days and wanna see the basic things. Perfect size.
Truth in Labeling.......2005-10-10
This pocket size guide really does make a trip tp Paris easy. The details by Arrondissement(district/neighborhoods)are very useful. The restaurant/Bistro tips were uniformly solid. The walks were easy to navigate and enriched strolling through Paris. The most useful guide to Paris I have seen.
A minor gripe: a sugested list of French phrases for the non-French speaker could use a phonetic guide.
THE guide to pack.......2005-04-26
I picked up Paris Made Easy just before a return trip to the City of Light, and I wish I'd had it the first time around! The title says it all: the content of this book, the way it's organized, and even its size made it the one guide I used day in and day out.
Do yourself a favor and leave the heavy guidebooks with the glossy pictures at home. (You're going to be seeing all those sights in person, anyway, right?) Paris Made Easy has great info on restaurants, museums, shopping, walks -- and not only the famous sights, but also some obscure yet really fun destinations that you might never discover otherwise. Good maps, too. Because it's all organized by neighborhood (arrondissement) in a compact format, I could just drop the guide in my purse, start wandering, and pull it out to find a place to eat or an interesting sight to see wherever I happened to end up. That freedom to explore made me feel much more like an insider and much less like a tourist.
The author's writing style is another plus: conversational, down-to-earth, and funny, but also very clear. (For example, I decided on the spur of the moment to venture outside Paris to visit Versailles, and a quick look at Paris Made Easy gave me such good instructions that I didn't even need to ask questions at the train station. In fact, I must have looked pretty confident, because people were asking me for directions!)
Check out the price of this book, too. With all the information you get, it's a real bargain. I can't recommend it enough!
Best of Paris.......2004-09-27
Although this book is out of print, the walks found in Paris Made Easy have been expanded and you can find them in "Open Road's Best of Paris" by Andy Herbach. It's available on amazon. "Open Road's Best of Paris" gives readers a small number of great choices and itineraries for one-day, weekend, one-week and two-week trips to Paris and environs. Readers will find a variety of plans grouped around three categories: Museums, Art and Architecture; Eating, drinking, shopping and relaxing; and Offbeat and off-the-beaten path. "Best of Paris" offers unique ideas such as "A Day at a Cooking School and Wine Tasting" and a "Da Vinci Code" walking tour!

good vocabulary builder.......2006-07-02
I use this book almost on daily basis for half an hour or so. It lists around 1500 words which are allegedly the ones you will most often encounter on the SAT and GRE tests.
It does, however, possess strictly the elements you will find in any good dictionary: the words are listed in alphabetical order(a pronunciation note is given for each word), each word is thoroughly defined, and you are provided with several (excellent) examples on its usage, often one for each of its different meanings (if the word has more than one meaning).
Although it very much looks like the content of an average-quality dictionary you probably already own, its main function could not be disputed - the author has carefully selected (out of hundreds of thousands) those 1500 words that are most likely that an educated person will need in its vocabulary, not only to take successfully one of the above-mentioned tests, but also in his career and everyday life.
There are also some review exercises after each section, which consist solely of the task of linking synonymous words - again a feature with limited usefulness, since almost all dictionaries already provide you with a list of synonyms. I believe the author could have been more creative in his effort to provide good review practice, especially because reviewing is the only way to memorize the words you've just met and ultimately build up your vocabulary by using them. Furthermore, I also think the author could have thought of a better way to group the words - thematically, by level of difficulty, or in any other systematic way. Instead, he decided on listing them alphabetically, which is of limited usefulness to the student. You may soon get bored, since it feels like reading a dictionary. The good side is that you will easily find a word you are looking for (although this could have been achieved with an index at the end of the book). Even so, you do not have to follow this book as it is written. You may choose, like I have, to simply open it randomly and do some reading; the negative side being, of course, that you may do many repetitions and omissions in this way. But repetitions are good for your vocabulary, right :)?
Despite this, I find this book quite enjoying and I highly recommend it. Although I do not intend to take any of the tests this book helps you prepare, it still is an excellent way to expand your vocabulary extensively, incorporating many important words that you will certainly use in one way or another in your life. Let me draw your attention to the fact that many studies have shown that your professianal and even social success is directly linked to the scope and depth of your vocabulary.

It's easy to miss this gem.......2001-06-14
This is the most practical grammar book I have found and I have purchased a number of titles. The book is comprehensive with just the right level of detail. There are a few popular grammar books I also liked such as Woe Is I and Sin and Syntax but they not a reference titles. A number of "Grammer" books that I purchased turned out to be more about style than grammar. At first I overlooked this book because it didn't have a review and it was so cheap. After buying a number of more expensive titles I wish I would have just bought this one.

Good but..........2007-03-10
This is a rather good book. Good review of grammar using idiomatic vocabulary items, with exercises. One thing I noticed were various typographic errors. This became rather irksome.
After finding it in the library, I had to buy it!.......1999-11-18
It's a great guide for me in recalling and testing how well my French has stood the test of time. Having first stumbled across it at the library, I had to buy it. So now I can continue to work with my own copy. I realized I would need more time to go through it carefully, doing the exercises, and hopefully perfecting the French I'd previously studied.
The best French book ever written.......1998-07-12
If accompanied by a decent English-French dictionary, this book is all you'll ever need to learn French. It has every verb tense, every preposition, and just about every tiny little detail of the French language listed in this book. I can't say enough about it. I highly recommend it.

Not as useful as others in the series.......1998-06-18
The illustrations in this book are not the same woodcut type illustrations typical in other books in this series. If you are looking for a good picture of a tree, I suggest you look elsewhere.
The book does contain Latin names for plants pictured, though, if this is helpful to you.
