Book Description
If you are interested in understanding how the systematic use of task models in the design, development, and usability evaluation of interactive software applications can open new opportunities and possibilities then this book will help you do just that. Fabio Paternò also discusses related issues relevant to designing user interfaces and provides a state-of-the-art review of the field, including recently developed methods, current results and problems and trends. Details of the notation and analysis discussed, including case studies of industrial interest, are available for those who want to use them for applied projects and in industrial contexts. While the book is designed to suit a range of academic and industrial courses on task models and methods for user interface design and evaluation, it will also be useful as supplementary reading for any course on human-computer interaction and software engineering.

Athlete, Scholar, Philosopher, Leader.......2006-07-13
"By the Book" chronicles the life of Joe Paterno. It begins with a description of his childhood and prep school years in Brooklyn, takes us through his football career at Brown University, and how he became the head coach at Penn State. The book is rich with descriptions of Penn State players and seasons up through the 1988 season. But, this book is much more than a football story. It's a view into Joe Pa's heart and soul. It is a portrayal of his values, his motivations, his vision and dreams. These, not just for his football team, but for his family, his university, and his profession. Much more than a fun read for Penn State fans, it is a valuable resource for aspiring coaches and players searching to find the essence of their relationship to their sport.
Paterno: on Sports...and Life.......2004-07-27
Published before the 1989 season, Paterno: By the Book provides a great deal of insight into the mind of one of the greatest college football coaches ever. The book is more memorable for Paterno's musings on life, recruiting, winning, losing and growing up with a strong mother rather than for his specific thoughts on the numerous games he has coached. Assuming the book is in fact an accurate portrayal of Paterno, it is clear that he will never voluntarily step down from Penn State, no matter how bad things get. He is determined and driven to succeed. He will not quit and he will not go quietly. From many of his remarks in the book about Penn State, it is clear he feels the same way a number of his supporters do, Penn State owes Joe loyalty for his many years of service. A solid sports book about sports...and life.
Joe Paterno puts competition in perspective.......1998-03-24
This book is a must read for football fans, coaches, players, and for anyone interested in how to succeed in sports competition. Although it is his life story, one can garner many pearls of wisdom about how to succeed, how to compete in an honest and sincere way, and the values that must be instilled in any sports players, young and old. You can find out why a man would turn down a 1 million job to coach at Penn State for 100K. Or why Joe Paterno rolls up his pants for games. Most of all, you can find the nuances and ideals behind the most successful college football coach, and the most successful college football program, in history.
Book Description
By now, most people have become familiar with the basic functionality and interfaces of computers. However, developing new or modified applications that effectively support users' goals still requires considerable expertise in programming that cannot be expected from most people. Thus, one fundamental challenge for the coming years is to develop environments that allow users who do not have background in programming to develop or modify their own applications, with the ultimate aim of empowering people to flexibly employ advanced information and communication technologies.
The present book is an effort to make many important aspects of the international discussion on End-User Development (EUD) available to a broader audience. It provides a unique set of contributions from various research institutes in various countries addressing relevant issues and proposing original solutions.
The editors hope that this broad look at the emerging paradigm of End-User Development leads you to appreciate its diversity and potential for the future. And we look forward to having you, the reader, the "end-user" of this book, contribute what you can to the field, whether it is working on a system for EUD, or simply achieving a better understanding of how EUD might fit into your work and your life.

Book Description
Formal methods have already been shown to improve the development process and quality assurance in system design and implementation. This volume examines whether these benefits also apply to the field of human-computer interface design and implementation, and whether formal methods can offer useful support in usability evaluation and obtaining more reliable implementations of user requirements. Its main aim is to compare the different approaches and examine which particular type of implementation and problem each one is best suited to. To enable the reader to compare and contrast the approaches as easily as possible, each one is applied to the same case study: the specification of an ideal Netscape-like web browser and html page server. The resulting volume will provide invaluable reading for final year undergraduate and postgraduate courses on user interfaces, user interface design, and applications of formal methods.

A great Web guide!!.......2000-12-26
This is an excellent guide to the web. Just the sort of book we've all been waiting for! Easy to understand and highly informative. It tells you in straightforward terms how the world wide web developed from the early Internet days, how it works and you can use it in many different ways. For example, it points you towards very useful web sites on health, education and business.
I passed my copy onto my young nephew. He was fascinated by it and has now begun to use the web himself to help him with his studies and find out lots of info about his favourite sports!
Book Description
Distinguished poet Horace Gregory has selected thirty-seven of Longfellow's most enduring poems for this edition, the only paperback of Longfellow's poetry in print.
Customer Reviews:
A great anthology of a true poet's work........2000-05-03
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is perhaps the greatest rhymester to have ever lived. His endless rhymes almost seem to stay in one's mind, refusing to go. And this edition of his collected poetry just shows Longfellow at his best.
This here is poetry that - though over a hundred years old - is still fresh and alive with vigor. The poems tell tales of men and women, of birds and beast, and of gods and demigods (such as found in The Song of Hiawatha) in such magnificent form that it isn't a wonder why Longfellow was known to be the greatest American poet of his time.
"A poem should not mean but be," Archibald MacLeish wrote in "Ars Poetica." These poems are not intricate, and they're not incomprehensible, and they're definitely not senseless nor pointless; they are timeless, rhetoric voices of literature that tell so much . . . of so much.
And besides, how much times do we come across a poet who does not want to talk about how he feels and his emotions? It seems to be all that poets want to write about. It's good to sometimes read poems that simply want to tell stories and not what the Soul, or the Heart, or the Mind feels. Those things can be nice, but can make one ponder more than he or she should.
Another thing that will become apparent to the reader of this book is that Longfellow was a keen observer of people. In these poems, he writes about them very well. "The Village Blacksmith," for example, is a brilliant poem that tells of one ordinary man with an ordinary occupation: being a blacksmith. It's not of some Don Juan, or Rob Roy, or Casanova that in real life are as scarce as an honest politician. The story of the man in the poem - how he toils, and mourns, and triumphs, and suffers - is one that anyone can relate to.
It is even possible to find comfort in these poems that simply tell stories and not of emotional issues. Also, as I aforementioned, the iambic tales will stay in your mind as you might find it hard to forget them. It is probably the simplicity of these poems that make them so easy to memorize, and are probably what made Longfellow great.
Book Description
When Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died on March 24, 1882, at the age of seventy-five, he was the most celebrated poet in the English-speaking world, Not only was he America's first professional poet, but, after his death, he was the first American to have his bust placed in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey in London, England.
Longfellow was an unsurpassed master in his use of musical language. Few poets could match his sonorous and rhythmically sensual use of words. His poetry is rarely abstract, and the vivid, descriptive imagery and the narrative form of verse he favored make it pleasing to read and follow. His subject matter touched on American life and its verities, be it legendary heroism as in "Paul Revere's Ride" or in the honest, upright, and hardworking man of "The Village Blacksmith."
This collection brings together Longfellow's best and most famous poems, providing a complete overview of his versatile and multifaceted genius. All the classic Longfellow selections, including "A Psalm of Life," "The Children's Hour," and "The Day is Done," are here, as well as lesser-known but equally worthy poems, like "The Cross of Snow," a sonnet written in memory of his second wife, who died tragically in a fire. Also included, in their entirety, are two long narrative masterpieces, Evangeline and The Courtship of Miles Standish.
One of the most popular poets who ever lived, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a marvelous storyteller. In addition, his verse expressed his deep sincerity and his uncanny ability to identify with the hearts and passions of those who read and reread his poems.
This book features a deluxe cover, ribbon marker, top stain, and decorative endpapers with a nameplate.
Customer Reviews:
Where have you gone, Mr. Longfellow? .......2005-02-07
Longellow is the poet of the American public school. 'Evangeline' 'The Courtship of Miles Standish' 'Paul Revere's Ride' ' The Village Blacksmith' ' 'A Psalm of life' and others. His reputation in the nineteenth century was great and overwhelming. Yet his reputation in the realm of poetry today is not with those artists of the canon, Tennyson and Browning in England, and Whitman and Dickinson in the United States. Perhaps it is because his poems are taken to be not inventive enough linguistically. Perhaps it is because the very thing many have praised him for his musicality seems today to be less than the irregular music of a Hopkins or Dylan Thomas.
In any case in Longfellow one will find sound solid lines, a certain moral stance , a kind of American integrity. For someone like myself reading Longfellow is a nostalgic trip and a new perspective on what I read so long ago. He has much to give even if it is not quite at the highest poetic level.
Poetry written for the human soul!.......2002-02-08
Whether you are simply exploring an interest in poetry or are a seasoned reader of the great poets, Longfellow's poems will move you. There is a poem in this collection that is perfect for every mood you could be in. If you are down and need to be lifted up, if you simply want to smile about the beauty of life, or if your heart has been broken, Longfellow's works will speak to your heart. Longfellow's works have spoken to my soul as no other poet or writer has ever before.
you want it you got it.......2000-01-26
I love this book it is something that men and women would enjoy. I have tons of information on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow because our house is a remake of his he lived from 1807-1882. If I were you I would buy it I am the biggest fan of his I have every single book of poems, songs, and more on him in paperback and hardcover. Buy it!
The best introduction to one of America's best loved poets........1998-11-10
When I was producing a video biography of Longfellow for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill in 1992, I needed a one-volume selection of Longfellow's poetry, and this book did the job very nicely. It includes Longfellow's best-known poems as well as two others that were never published during the poet's lifetime but must be classed with his finest work. The introduction by Lawrence Buell provides a useful biographical sketch and a thoughtful discussion of why Longfellow--the most famous American of his time--is not more widely read today. Buell's observations may get you thinking about this schoolbook poet in a different way.

Book Description
Labour with what zeal we will,
Something still remains undone,
Something uncompleted still
Waits the rising of the sun.
--from "Something Left Undone"
From his youthful works to his final, mature poems, the breadth and beauty of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poetry is on display in this wonderful compilation. “A Psalm of Life,” which opens the collection, comes from Longfellow’s very first book, while “L’Envoi” captures the chill feel of oncoming death. Also included are the ever-popular “Evangeline,” “The Song of Hiawatha,” “The Wreck of the Hesperus,” and more.

An American classic .......2005-12-15
Longfellow is not placed among the great poetic masters. But his great reputation in his lifetime does make a certain sense. For he wrote much poetry of strength and value. He is an American classic and if his too many long lines in 'Evangeline' and 'Hiawatha' put many to sleep they too at times inspired.

Be Forewarned.......2005-09-14
A friend and I toured Longfellow's home in Cambridge this past July and were absolutely delighted by the experience. The work they do to preserve his house and property is truly remarkable and I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Sadly, this is also where I picked up a copy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: Selected Poems. They carried many attractive collections of Longfellow by reputable presses, but, foolishly, I was swayed by this handsomely bound volume which promised a broad collection of lyrics plus three lengthy narratives printed in their entirety.
Unfortunately, the volume is so badly edited, I have already urged the Longfellow house not to carry it! Indeed, there are several hundred errors and probably more imperfect pages than good ones.
Most routinely, there are uncountable typesetting or typographical glitches. Strophes within the same poem, for instance, are not consistently formatted or divided with an empty line - making for an awkward reading (see, for example, the confusing elision of Crashaw's motto with Longfellow's poem, A Psalm of Life, p. 53). In addition, spaces between words are often dropped or else extra spaces appear - I especially like those before punctuation which leave a comma or semicolon floating in the margin.
Of course, these are amusing, though minor, embarrassments. However, all too many errors are of grave consequence. The last six lines are missing [!] from The Courtship of Miles Standish (p. 110). As printed, the poem ends with a comma!! Also, six strophes are missing from the opening poem, The Builders. Some mistakes are utterly bizarre (strophes 10-12 of The Wreck of the Hesperus read "Oh fatherl...O fathert...O fartherl!," p. 66), and it is unimaginable that the editors would have missed them had they actually done an editor's work! Worst of all is the highly corrupt, Hiawatha. Dozens, about 60 by my count, of individual words are dropped at random throughout the text (ten instances alone between the bottom-half of 170 through p.172, for example).
As a scholar of music and poetry, my concern may be more intense than some - I have obsessively re-edited the entire volume for myself (making it quite serviceable for my purposes, however ugly!). Nevertheless, excepting someone who wants only a pretty souvenir for the mantle (perhaps, the intended customer of Castle Books - and their parent company, Book Sales, inc.), no one could remain unflustered while reading through this book. This relects badly on both the publishers and the editors, Johanna Brownell and Lisa Lipkin (why did it take two of them!?). Considering that Longfellow's poetry is well within the public domain, it is sad that someone wishing to own a collection of favorites should be duped into purchasing an attractive, yet often unreadable, volume. It certainly should not be sold on the premises of a first-rate, national institution that honors the very poet the publishing house treats so carelessly.
