Book Description
Frontier and pioneer societies provide numerous unexplored avenues of social history. Game in the Garden identifies the imaginative use of wild animals in early western society. In what is now western Canada, humans have long used wildlife in order to survive their surroundings, better understand their natural world, and form aspects of their identity.
The shared use of wild animals has helped to determine social relations between Native peoples and newcomers. In later settlement periods, controversy about subsistence hunting and campaigns of local conservation associations drew lines between groups in communities, particularly Native peoples, immigrants, farmers, and urban dwellers. In addition to examining grassroots conservation activities, Colpitts identifies early slaughter rituals, iconographic traditions, and subsistence strategies that endured well into the interwar years in the twentieth century. Drawing primarily on local and provincial archival sources, he analyzes popular meanings and booster messages discernible in taxidermy work, city nature museums, and promotional photography.
Environmental historians, Native studies specialists, history students, conservationists, nature enthusiasts, and general readers alike will find fascinating how western attitudes to wild animals changed according to subsistence and economic needs and how wildlife helped to determine the social relations among people in western Canada.

"Michelin The Green Guide Paris, 4e"
Customer Reviews:
Michelin Green Guide to Paris.......2007-09-29
The format is confusing with areas alphabetically arranged. You have to know the name of the Metro stop or the small area to find the information...it's rather choppy in its presentation.
I bought this guide because I'm going to be living in Paris for a month and I thought it would be more helpful than thew standard American guide. I'm not sure it will be. The style is also rather dry, and not very generating of enthusiasm for the places described.
Walking Through Paris with Michelin.......2007-05-17
There must be hundreds of Paris guides but I chose this one for its comprehensive coverage of museums and monuments. It is organised by district and is great for just walking around the city with its easy-to-follow maps. I especially like the "don't miss" feature to keep you from wandering through a museum and accidently walking past what it is famous for. It also has good material on history and art and architecture at the front of the book. My only quibble is that the Michelin format is too tall to zip comfortably into my pocketbook.
very helpful book good transaction.......2007-05-13
saw so much more in a little amount of time doe to your help
Don't go without it........2007-03-17
It has been too long since I have visited Paris, so felt an investment in this book a good move. This guide will more than pay for itself in tips and must sees that I would have missed. The neighborhood maps are wonderful, the walking tours invaluable. Recommendations on what to do including hours and days of operations of major attractions imperative in planning your perfect visit to this beautiful city! Love this guide. Thank you Michelin!
Great Pocket Guide.......2000-04-08
Fantastic size - allows you to carry the guide with you without being loaded down. Gorgeous photography gives you a visual impression of the sites. Very factual, very accurate. Can't buy a better guide for the money!

Michelin The Green Guide Paris, 4e
Customer Reviews:
Review of Michelin Paris, France Guide.......2007-01-12
I used this guide 30 years ago and found it invaluable when I visited and toured Paris, so much so that when my daughter told me she was going to Paris, I immediately ordered the guide for her. I know she will rave about it when she returns to the US.
The Best Paris Guide but With Limitations.......2006-03-23
The Michelin Green Guide to Paris is the best, the finest guide to the sights. No other guide that I have found is so complete with the history of the sights down to the smallest of detail. Once you've done the Louvre (covered completely here) and all the other primary & secondary sights in Paris, the Miche will tell you about the the police museum, the erotica museum, the hunting museum, etc.
HOWEVER, especially for the first or second visit to Paris, you will still need a Frommer's or Fodor's because the Miche is weak on hotels & restaurants and does very little on the standard tourist stuff such as getting to Paris from the airport, what to bring, etc.
Thorough but dull.......2006-03-15
I took three guidebooks to Paris, and the apartment where I stayed had a library containing several others left behind by previous guests. This guide is the one I used the least. It is also the one most-often left behind. OK, so everyone raves about the Michelin guides, BUT I got more mileage out of an excellent street map (The Paris Mapguide) and Rick Steves' Paris 2006 which I found was easier to use (excellent index), more interesting to read, and the commentary helpful in making decisions. Yes, my Michelin stayed in Paris, as well.
Best guidebook to Paris.......2005-11-27
Last summer I went to Paris and used the Michelin Green Guide. It was excellent. Everything was well-researched and well presented. Background information was solid. My only complaint is that it just focuses on Paris. Day trips outside the city are briefly overviewed. Farther attractions, such as the Loire Valley, are not even mentioned. Overall, I would highly recommend this guidebook!
You're going to LOVE FRANCE! .......2004-09-24
I've made >20 visits to France all together. Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the Metro. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Customer Reviews:
The most comprehensive guide to Paris.......2001-04-27
This book covers the sites (not restaurants or hotels - they are in a different book) of every neighborhood of Paris in extraordinary depth. It is an indispensible tool for visiting the city.
The shortcoming of the book is that it provides little assistance in planning and prioritizing your trip. If you are looking for sites in a particular neighborhood, or know what you want to see - this guide will get you there and give you the background information you need.
Like an encyclopedia - it has a lot of information, but you have to know what you are looking for to make it useful. A perfect complement to the Green Guide is a book like Rick Steve's Paris 2001 - which helps in organizing and prioritizing your trip, but covers only the most popular sites in the city.
The Only First Class Paris Travel Guide.......2000-03-16
The Michelin Paris Green Guide is the Cadillac of the Paris travel guides - I wouldn't recommend visiting Paris without it, no matter how well you may think you know the city. Michelin has been around for so long, and is so closely tied to the French culture, you can't go wrong with their recommendations. This is the only travel publication that really gets a traveller into the spirit of Paris. The Michelin 3-star ratings are trusted worldwide, and there's a reason why. I've never been disappointed with a Michelin recommended establishment. Travelling in Europe can be very intimidating, especially when you don't speak the language, but the 3-star ratings made it possible for us to prioritize our outings. The Paris Green Guide made me feel like an insider. The detailed maps include recommended walking tours - a great way to see the sights up close without getting lost! The color photos are beautifully arranged, but the real advantage of this book is that it offers substance over "fluff" - something sadly lacking in many travel books. The great Paris sights are all arranged in alphabetical order, and once you know the name of the sight you'd like to read about, it's right at your fingertips. The detailed information provided for each sight allows you to read as much or as little as you'd like about your destination. This works well for us because my husband is a real history buff and likes all the details in advance, while I prefer to have more of an overview of what I'm about to see, and then I like to go back and get the details after I've seen the sight. The small area maps are also a great feature - we particularly appreciated the museum maps. You can truly get lost in the Louvre, but as long as we had the Green Guide in our bag, we knew we wouldn't miss the highlights we really wanted to see. For practical information (time changes, weather patterns, currency exchange, etc.), the Green Guide offers a special quick reference section in the back of the book. I would highly recommend the Paris Green Guide to anyone visiting Paris - whether it's your first time or you're a seasoned pro - you will appreciate the expertise offered in this first class travel book.
Wow, what a disappointment........1999-12-03
Let me start by saying I own at least a dozen (if not more) Michelin Green Guides. This was a real let down. The organization was terrible. For example, the book is supposed to be in alphabetical order but some places are listed under their own name i.e. Louvre and others are listed under their location - NOT ARONDISSMENT- i.e. St. Germain. This makes it extremely confusing to figure out where to find the monument, museum, etc. that you're trying to visit.
Also, the index at the back is completely useless. Some places are entered in French alphabetical order and some in English. A lot of places don't even appear in the index at all. This is especially annoying since the main section of the book is so disorganized.
I guess this is really a 3 star book when you compare it to others but it really doesn't live up to Michelin standards. I will still buy other versions for other locations but I suggest you skip this one.

Book Description
This manual, the third of the United States Pony Club Manuals of Horsemanship, builds on the fundamentals covered in Basics for Beginners/D Level and Intermediate Horsemanship/C Level. Whether you are a Pony Clubber who has passed the C Level tests, a rider who has mastered the same skills, a riding instructor or a stable manager, this manual will enable you to increase your skills and teach you what you need to know to ride with correct, classical technique in advanced work on the flat, over fences, and in the open; to evaluate and school horses; to teach horsemanship; and to manage a stable efficiently. Written for the North American horseman, this manual emphasizes sound fundamentals and classical methods based on knowledge of the horse and its systems. Whether you wish to compete in dressage, show jumping, combined training, or other horse sports; to train horses, teach riding, manage a stable, or simply enjoy horses and horsemastership at an advanced level, The United States Pony Club Manual of Horsemanship: Advanced Horsemanship/B, HA, A Levels will give you a clear and understandable guide. The USPC B Level is for active Pony Clubbers or horsepersons who are interested in acquiring further knowledge and proficiency in all phases of riding and horse care. The A, the highest rating, is divided into two parts: the HA, which covers teaching, training, and stable management, and the A, which covers advanced riding and schooling of horses at all levels. Many A Level Pony Clubbers have gone on to qualify for the United States Equestrian Team in various disciplines.

Customer Reviews:
USPC Manual B, HA, and A.......2004-12-04
This book has helped me so much! I began reading and studying it at age 10 when I was still a C2, and throughout my ratings and progression it has answered my endless questions and supplemented the material from the D and C manuals. While the B, HA, and A manual is very informative, it should only be read by those who can thoroughly comprehend and extract inportant information from the text. I was always a very mature reader, but at times I even had to reread pages to be sure I understood correctly. This book has helped me through my B, HA, and just recently helped me pass my A, so this book is the best way to go to becoming a good rider!
Thank you so much for making this Manual!
Love,
Anna
Teaches you about the horse and how to manage a horse........1999-04-06
This book is great for learning about the body systems of a horse. It also briefly explains how to manage a stable with things such as how to make a stall have good drinage. It is the best book to get if you want to meet the requirements of Pony Club levels A, HA, or B. But I recommend getting this book only if you are at the advanced levels in riding and horsemanship because otherwise you will find that the book overwhelms you with information.I may suggest that people buying this book should consider buying Pony Club Manuals on levels C and D before or perhaps in addition to this manual.Overall, a good book for learning about the horse.
Excellent book for advanced horsemen of any age........1998-06-12
This is a great follow-on to the first two volumes of the USPC manuals. Together, they are the best "curriculum" on horsemanship available, bar none. (I say that, owning 900 horse books! The three USPC Manuals are the most useful of all.) As another reviewer said, it's not "complete"--one should read the first two volumes, first, as, like the USPC Standards of Proficiency, the Manuals build upon each other. I am a long-time riding instructor (over 22 years), especially with the US Pony Clubs. The three-volumes of the USPC Manuals would be a solid foundation of a good equestrian library.
A book with a lot of info........1998-06-10
This book is very informitave and helped me alot. I am only a D-2 but it still answered alot of the questions I had. It covers everything from teaching horsemanship to jumping and yes even vet care. The jumping part helped me to understand alot of things that helped me train my horse. I recomend that you buy it.
A book for serious horsefolk, who wish to acquire expertise.......1998-04-24
This is the third of a series of three volumes of the United States Pony Clubs' Manual of Horsemanship. While similar in scope to the British Horse Society's one-volume book of the same title, the USPC has taken the approach that the horseperson can read one volume when starting out, a second when they have assimilated a bit more, and finally this third volume when they feel like they know just about everything there is to know. I can promise you that no matter how much practical, useful information you had before you pick up this volume, you will put it down having acquired much more. While it is very readable, it is not a "page-turner". I found that I would read two to five pages, go off and think about it for a day or two, and come back again for more. If you liked the first two volumes in the series, you will like this one. If you approach this book without reading the first two volumes, you will probably find the book incomplete and coverage spotty. The book is written to match the Pony Club standards, and provides the necessary information to advance to the highest ratings -- remembering that the higher ratings in Pony Club build on the lower ones. It is hard to believe that anyone in America today could consider themselves a serious horseman without digesting this volume. Bravo to the USPC for the whole series!!
